Build the first working version as a server-authenticated WebSocket client connected to wss://api.x.ai/v1/realtime. Keep the permanent xAI API key on your server, give browser clients only an ephemeral client secret, configure the current Grok Voice model, then relay microphone audio to the session and streamed response audio to a player. Add tools, search, state, WebRTC, LiveKit, or telephony only after that speech loop is reliable.

What Grok Voice 3.0 is and what you are building

Grok Voice 3.0 is xAI’s real-time speech-to-speech model for conversational agents. xAI describes the Voice API as supporting full-duplex conversation, tool use, search, multi-turn context, built-in reasoning, and more than 25 languages. The product positioning is to “Build real-time voice agents with tool use, search, and multi-turn conversation.” See the Grok Voice API product page for the current capabilities and model availability.

A practical voice agent has five cooperating parts:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Capture: a browser, mobile app, or telephone provider collects microphone audio.
  • Transport: WebSocket, WebRTC, a media server such as LiveKit, or a telephony bridge carries audio in both directions.
  • Model session: Grok receives audio, maintains the conversation, decides when to respond, and can request tools.
  • Application server: your server protects credentials, executes approved tools, stores state, and applies policy.
  • Playback: the client renders streamed response audio while allowing interruption.

The smallest useful implementation is a direct WebSocket connection. It is easier to inspect than a full media stack and gives you a known-good baseline before you optimize browser latency or add phone support.

Prerequisites and decisions

Accounts and software

  • An xAI account with Voice API access and a server-side API key.
  • A backend runtime capable of opening secure WebSockets and handling binary or base64 audio frames.
  • A client that can capture and play audio, such as a browser using its media APIs.
  • A secure deployment URL for production. Browser microphone access normally requires HTTPS and user permission.

Choose the first transport

Transport Best starting point Strengths Trade-offs
Direct WebSocket Server prototypes and controlled clients Smallest learning example, explicit JSON events, straightforward server authentication You must handle browser media capture, buffering, playback, reconnects, and interruption logic
WebRTC Browser agents where interactive latency matters Purpose-built real-time media transport and browser audio handling Signaling, permissions, connection-state handling, and media negotiation add complexity
LiveKit Production applications needing media orchestration Rooms, participant state, media routing, and operational tooling An additional media platform, configuration layer, and cost model
Twilio Telephone agents Phone numbers, call control, PSTN connectivity, and telephony workflows Telephony pricing, call events, codec boundaries, and provider-specific integration

xAI’s voice overview lists Web Agent, Twilio Phone Agent, WebRTC Agent, and iOS tester demonstrations. Those examples indicate supported integration directions; they do not remove the need to design your own authentication, monitoring, and failure handling.

Protect xAI credentials

Server-to-xAI authentication

For a backend connection, send the permanent key in an HTTP Authorization header during the WebSocket handshake:

Authorization: Bearer $XAI_API_KEY

Store the key in your server’s secret manager or environment, restrict which services can read it, and rotate it if it appears in logs, error reports, source control, or a client bundle. Never put this value in browser JavaScript, HTML, a mobile app, or a URL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Browser authentication with an ephemeral secret

A browser should first call your server. Your server authenticates to xAI, requests an ephemeral client secret using the current Voice API procedure, and returns only that short-lived secret. The browser then uses the documented xai-client-secret.<EPHEMERAL_TOKEN> WebSocket subprotocol when opening the realtime connection. The exact minting request and lifetime are API details that can change, so follow the current Voice Inference API reference rather than hard-coding an old endpoint.

  1. Authenticate the user to your application and apply rate limits.
  2. On your server, validate that the user is allowed to start a voice session.
  3. Ask xAI for an ephemeral client secret using your permanent server credential.
  4. Return only the ephemeral value and any session metadata your client needs.
  5. Open the browser WebSocket with the xai-client-secret.<EPHEMERAL_TOKEN> subprotocol.
  6. Expire the application session and discard the secret when the call ends.

Ephemeral authentication protects the long-lived key, but it is not an authorization system by itself. Keep per-user quotas, tool permissions, and abuse detection on your server.

Build the minimal WebSocket speech loop

The API uses a secure WebSocket at wss://api.x.ai/v1/realtime. The HTTP GET handshake is upgraded to WebSocket, after which the session exchanges JSON messages for configuration, incoming audio, response audio, and status or error events. The event names, required fields, audio encoding, and model identifier are versioned API details; copy them from the current reference when implementing.

1. Open an authenticated server connection

A backend connection has this shape (the WebSocket library syntax varies by language):

const socket = new WebSocket("wss://api.x.ai/v1/realtime", {
  headers: { Authorization: `Bearer ${process.env.XAI_API_KEY}` }
});

socket.on("open", () => {
// Send the current Voice API session-configuration event here.
});

socket.on("message", (data) => {
// Parse each documented server event and route audio, completion,
// interruption, and error events to the appropriate application code.
});

Do not treat this as a complete event schema. In particular, do not guess a model alias or codec because an alias, sample rate, or event name may change. Confirm the currently exposed Grok Voice model identifier and accepted audio format immediately before deployment.

2. Send session configuration

After the socket opens, send the documented session-configuration event. Configure the current Grok Voice model, the input and output audio formats supported by that model, turn detection behavior, and any initial instructions. Keep the first instruction short and operational, for example: identify the agent, state its job, and explain when it should use an application tool.

Separate stable policy from per-call data. Put safety rules, disclosure requirements, and tool boundaries in server-controlled instructions. Insert the user’s locale, account identifier, and other request-specific context only after validating it on your server.

3. Capture microphone audio

In a browser, request microphone permission only after a user action, then capture frames with the browser’s audio APIs. Convert or preserve the format required by the current Voice API documentation; do not assume that a browser’s default floating-point frames can be sent unchanged. A reliable capture pipeline has:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A permission and device-selection step.
  • A fixed frame size that avoids excessive overhead without creating noticeable buffering.
  • Backpressure so a slow network does not grow an unbounded queue.
  • Silence and device-loss handling.
  • A visible recording indicator and a stop control.

For every captured frame, encode it exactly as documented and send the corresponding client audio event. Log frame counts and timestamps, not raw private audio.

4. Consume and play response audio

Server events can contain streamed response audio chunks. Decode each chunk using the negotiated output format and place it in a small playback queue. Start playback as soon as the first decodable chunk arrives instead of waiting for the entire answer. Keep capture and playback independent: the user must be able to speak while the model is still producing audio.

Use a jitter buffer large enough to prevent clicks during normal network variation, but small enough to preserve conversational responsiveness. If the queue grows, apply a deliberate policy—usually dropping obsolete queued audio after an interruption rather than allowing the agent to speak several seconds behind the conversation.

5. Handle turn completion and interruptions

Full-duplex behavior means the user can begin speaking while Grok is talking. When the client detects speech or receives the API’s interruption signal, stop or fade the current playback, clear queued response audio, and notify the session using the documented interruption or cancel event. Keep the transcript and application state consistent with what the user actually heard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not rely only on client-side voice activity detection. Use the server’s turn and response events as the authoritative state machine, while the client uses local detection to make playback feel immediate.

6. Instrument the first sample

Before adding business logic, make a test page that connects, sends one short utterance, receives audio, and disconnects. Record:

  • Connection time and authentication failures.
  • Time from the end of captured speech to the first response-audio chunk.
  • Playback underruns and queue depth.
  • Turn-interruption success rate.
  • Malformed-event, timeout, and reconnect counts.

This tiny loop isolates transport and audio problems from tool and database problems.

Add tools, search, and application state

Define narrow tools

Once basic speech works, declare only the functions the agent truly needs. Give each tool a strict argument schema, an authorization check, a timeout, and a bounded response size. Examples include looking up an order, creating a support ticket, or reading a calendar slot. The model should request a tool; your server should validate and execute it. Never let model-generated arguments directly authorize a payment, account change, or data export.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Return tool results safely

  1. Receive the documented tool-call event and correlate it with the session and user.
  2. Validate the function name and every argument against server-side rules.
  3. Check identity, tenancy, and permission independently of the model.
  4. Run the operation with a timeout and cancellation path.
  5. Send a structured result back through the API’s documented tool-result event.
  6. Allow Grok to continue the turn, or ask for clarification when the result is incomplete.

Use search deliberately

The product supports search, but search should be a controlled capability rather than a blanket instruction to browse. Define when fresh information is required, what sources are allowed, how results are cited or summarized to the caller, and what happens when search is unavailable. Cache non-sensitive, short-lived results where appropriate and record the query and latency for debugging.

Maintain state outside the model

Persist the conversation identifier, authenticated user, locale, tool outcomes, consent status, and business transaction state in your application. Treat model context as a working window, not your system of record. On reconnect, restore only the validated context needed for the call; do not replay secrets or untrusted tool output wholesale.

Move beyond direct WebSocket when the use case requires it

WebRTC for browser media

WebRTC can reduce the amount of custom browser audio plumbing and is a natural choice when low-latency media, device changes, and interruption behavior dominate the project. You still need signaling, ephemeral authentication, permission handling, connection-state recovery, and server-side policy. Prototype the direct WebSocket loop first so WebRTC debugging does not hide model or prompt errors.

LiveKit for multi-participant media

A media platform such as LiveKit becomes useful when rooms, participant tracks, moderation, recording, or server-side media routing are core requirements. Keep the xAI session and your application authorization separate from room membership. Measure the additional hop’s latency and make sure interruption events propagate in both directions.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Twilio for phone agents

Telephony adds phone-number provisioning, call state, PSTN audio constraints, caller identity, recording rules, and regional cost considerations. Use the provider’s call events to reconnect or terminate the model session when the call changes state. Design explicit fallback behavior for silence, busy signals, transfers, and lost media.

Migrate an OpenAI Realtime application

xAI’s official speech-to-speech guidance says an existing OpenAI Realtime application can be adapted by changing three integration values: the base URL, the API key, and the Grok voice model. Read the current speech-to-speech migration documentation before editing code.

  1. Move the credential to an xAI server-side secret and remove any old provider key from client code.
  2. Change the realtime WebSocket base URL to wss://api.x.ai/v1/realtime where the xAI integration requires it.
  3. Select the current Grok Voice model identifier published by xAI.
  4. Compare session fields, audio formats, turn detection, tool events, and interruption semantics instead of assuming complete wire compatibility.
  5. Run identical scripted conversations and inspect latency, transcripts, tool arguments, failures, and barge-in behavior.

Keep the provider-specific adapter behind one internal interface—connect, configure, send audio, receive audio, cancel response, and execute tool—so future model or transport changes do not spread through your user-interface code.

Production hardening checklist

  • Secrets: permanent keys exist only in server-side secret storage; ephemeral secrets are short-lived and scoped.
  • Authorization: every session and tool call is tied to an authenticated user and tenant.
  • Audio privacy: disclose recording and retention behavior, encrypt transport and storage, and avoid logging raw frames.
  • Backpressure: cap input and output queues and define behavior when the network stalls.
  • Reconnects: distinguish authentication failure, normal close, idle timeout, and transient network loss; avoid duplicate tool execution after retry.
  • Interruption: stop queued audio promptly and reconcile the transcript with the interrupted turn.
  • Observability: track time to first audio, total response time, error classes, tool latency, disconnects, and per-session minutes.
  • Fallback: provide text chat, voicemail, human transfer, or a clear retry message when audio cannot recover.
  • Abuse controls: apply per-user duration limits, concurrency limits, and spending alerts.
  • Versioning: pin and test the model identifier and event schema you deploy, while monitoring xAI documentation for changes.

Cost, language coverage, and published benchmarks

xAI’s October 14, 2026 Grok Voice 3.0 announcement lists a price of $0.08 per minute ($4.80 per hour). Treat that as a volatile published price, not a guaranteed quote: verify current regional billing, input/output accounting, minimums, and any surrounding service charges before launch. Your total cost can also include media infrastructure, telephony, storage, search, tool services, and observability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The product page states coverage of more than 25 languages. Test the accents, code-switching, names, and domain vocabulary that matter to your users rather than treating language count as a quality guarantee.

These are published benchmark figures reproduced by xAI, not measurements from your application. The announcement also claims latency under one second; measure your own time to first audio across your network, device, prompt, tools, and transport.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

The socket is rejected immediately

Check the endpoint, TLS support, Authorization header spelling, key scope, account access, and server clock. For a browser connection, verify that you used the ephemeral-secret subprotocol rather than exposing a permanent key. Capture the HTTP upgrade response and server error without recording credentials.

The session connects but produces no audio

Confirm that the session-configuration event was accepted, the model identifier is current, the input frames match the documented encoding, and a complete turn was sent. Log parsed event types and byte counts. A successful WebSocket handshake alone does not prove that the audio format or session state is valid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audio is distorted or silent

Compare capture and playback sample format, channel count, sample rate, frame boundaries, and decoding logic with the current reference. Ensure that base64 data is decoded exactly once and that binary frames are not accidentally converted to text. Test with a known microphone and headphones before investigating model behavior.

Responses lag or talk over the user

Measure capture-to-send delay, server time to first audio, queue depth, and playback buffering separately. Reduce unnecessary buffering, process response chunks incrementally, and implement the documented interruption flow. Tool calls and search can add deliberate latency; show a listening or working state so users understand what is happening.

Reconnects repeat an action

Give every side-effecting tool request an idempotency key, persist its execution result, and return the stored result when the same request is retried. Reconnecting the audio session must not automatically repeat an order, message, booking, or account change.

A sensible implementation sequence

  1. Verify account access, current model name, event schema, and audio formats in the live xAI documentation.
  2. Build a server-only WebSocket client with a permanent key.
  3. Send one configured session and complete one speech turn.
  4. Add browser capture and streamed playback without tools.
  5. Add interruption, reconnect, timeout, and observability paths.
  6. Issue ephemeral browser secrets and remove permanent credentials from client builds.
  7. Add one read-only tool, then authorization and idempotency before side effects.
  8. Choose WebRTC, LiveKit, or Twilio only when the deployment requirement justifies the added media layer.
  9. Load-test concurrent sessions, noisy devices, silence, tool failures, and network loss before enabling production traffic.

That order gives you a measurable speech baseline, keeps credentials safe, and prevents transport or business-logic complexity from masking basic audio and session errors.
