A useful race-strategy dashboard is not a single live chart. It is a timestamp-aware system that identifies the event and session, ingests timing, car telemetry, pit, tyre-stint, race-control and weather records independently, normalizes them around drivers and laps, and shows both the value and its freshness. Build the first version as a historical replay if you need a free, reproducible project; add live access only after confirming the provider’s subscription, schema and permitted use.
Decide what “real time” means for your dashboard
Start by defining the product boundary. A public dashboard can display observations delivered by a public service and calculate additional context from those observations. It should not be described as a Formula 1 team’s private telemetry system. Team telemetry contains operational data and access that a fan-facing API does not necessarily expose.
Separate every value into one of three categories:
- Observed: a field received from the provider, such as a lap time, interval, position, pit event, tyre compound, race-control message or weather reading.
- Calculated: a value your application derives from observations, such as a recent-pace average, stint age, gap trend or projected pit window.
- Modeled: a forecast that depends on assumptions or a trained model, such as predicted tyre degradation or expected undercut gain.
Give each category a visible label. A calculated pit-window estimate must not look like an official race-control instruction, and a model forecast must not be presented as a feed measurement.

| Source | What the documentation describes | Access and lifecycle notes | Good first use |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenF1 | JSON and CSV access to sessions, car data, laps, intervals, position, pits, stints, race control, weather and team radio. Historical data is documented from 2023 onward. | Historical access is documented as free without authentication. Real-time access requires a paid subscription. The project identifies itself as unofficial and not associated with Formula 1 companies. | Historical replay, education and a live prototype after subscription and terms have been checked. |
| T1API | PNG, JSON or CSV analysis results, including race strategy, tyre degradation, tyre-stint usage, race gaps, pace and telemetry plots. | The current v2 API requires a key. Its FastF1-based v1 predecessor is documented as deprecated and scheduled for retirement on 2027-09-01. Recheck routes, limits and retirement status. | A higher-level analysis service when you prefer prepared analyses over building every calculation yourself. |
For a first implementation, use historical data to make the state model and user interface deterministic. A replay lets you test late records, missing fields and session transitions without depending on a live race. Add a live adapter only after the historical path is reliable.
Use a pipeline rather than a single polling loop
Organize the application into layers so a delayed weather record cannot block timing, and a changed provider field cannot force a rewrite of the display.
- Source adapters: one adapter per provider. Convert provider-specific names and formats into your internal event types.
- Ingestion queue: accept records independently and attach an ingestion timestamp. Do not assume that arrival order is event order.
- Raw store: retain the original payload and source timestamp for replay, debugging and audit.
- Normalizer: validate event and session identifiers, driver numbers, lap numbers, units and null values.
- State store: maintain the latest known state per session, driver, lap and stream, together with its last-observed timestamp.
- Strategy engine: calculate gaps, pace trends, stint age and scenario estimates from a declared snapshot of normalized data.
- API and web client: deliver panels, freshness metadata and uncertainty labels to the browser.
This separation also makes historical replay straightforward: feed stored raw records through the same normalizer and strategy engine used by live mode, but advance a replay clock instead of waiting for wall-clock time.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Resolve the meeting and session before collecting telemetry
Practice, qualifying, sprint and race records can share drivers and a circuit while having different timing contexts. Resolve the meeting and session first, and carry those identifiers on every stored row.
- Let the user select a meeting and session, or configure a known session key for a replay.
- Fetch the session metadata and verify that its date, session type and meeting match the selection.
- Store the provider’s meeting and session keys in a session table.
- Pass those keys to every stream request or subscription.
- Reject a record whose session key does not match the active session; route it to a quarantine log rather than silently merging it.
Never use driver number alone as a global key. The same number can appear in different sessions, and a driver’s position, tyre state and lap count must be scoped to the session.
Ingest each stream independently
The streams have different meanings and update rhythms. Treat them as separate append-only records and join them later using session, driver, lap and timestamps.
| Stream | Dashboard use | Fields to retain | Freshness handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car data | Speed, throttle, brake, gear, RPM or other vehicle channels exposed by the provider. | Source timestamp, driver number, channel values, units and any lap or sample identifier. | OpenF1 documents a sample rate of about 3.7 Hz. Treat that as a documented characteristic, not a guarantee that every sample arrives on schedule. |
| Lap and interval timing | Lap pace, sector context, gaps and relative performance. | Lap number, lap time, sector values where available, interval, gap to leader and source timestamp. | OpenF1 documents live interval updates at approximately four-second intervals. Show the timestamp instead of implying frame-perfect synchronization. |
| Position | Track order and position changes. | Driver number, position, timestamp and session key. | Keep the last observed position, but mark it stale when its age exceeds your configured threshold. |
| Pit events | Stop detection, pit-lane duration and traffic context. | Driver number, pit entry or exit event, timestamps, lap and duration when supplied. | Do not infer a completed stop from a missing timing update; wait for the relevant event or label it incomplete. |
| Tyre stints | Compound, stint sequence and tyre age. | Driver number, compound, stint number, start and end lap, and source timestamps. | Represent an unknown compound or age as unknown, not as zero. |
| Race control | Flags, safety-car states and messages that alter strategy assumptions. | Message text or coded state, timestamp, scope and session key. | Display the message time and preserve its order; a later-arriving record can still describe an earlier event. |
| Weather | Track and ambient conditions relevant to tyre and pit decisions. | Timestamp, location or scope, temperature, humidity, wind and rainfall fields when supplied. | OpenF1 documents weather updates every minute. Show the reading time beside the value. |
Because no single documented cadence covers every stream, do not build a universal synchronized “frame.” Instead, render a current state assembled from the newest valid record in each stream and expose the age of each component.

Design a durable normalized data model
Keep raw and normalized data side by side. Raw payloads allow you to reproduce a provider response after a parser change; normalized tables give the interface stable fields.
A minimal relational design can include:
- sessions: internal session ID, provider meeting key, provider session key, meeting name, session type, start time and source name.
- drivers: session ID, driver number, display name, team label when supplied and an active flag.
- telemetry_samples: session ID, driver number, source timestamp, ingestion timestamp, channel values, units and raw-record ID.
- laps: session ID, driver number, lap number, lap and sector values, source timestamp and validity status.
- intervals: session ID, driver number, timestamp, interval, gap and null-status flags.
- pit_events: session ID, driver number, lap, event type, entry and exit timestamps, duration and completion status.
- stints: session ID, driver number, stint number, compound, start lap, end lap and source timestamps.
- race_control: session ID, timestamp, message or state, scope and raw-record ID.
- weather: session ID, timestamp, location or scope, measured fields and raw-record ID.
Every table should retain both source_timestamp and ingested_at. They answer different questions: when did the event occur, and when did your application receive it? Add a parser version or schema version so a later migration can be traced.
Make freshness visible instead of pretending streams are synchronized
For each panel, calculate age = current_display_time - source_timestamp. The display should show a timestamp such as “updated 12 seconds ago,” not merely a blinking live icon.
- Fresh: the record is within the stream’s expected update window.
- Delayed: the record is older than expected but still usable as historical context.
- Stale: the age exceeds a configured maximum; keep the value visible only if it is clearly marked stale.
- Unknown: no valid value has been received for the current session or driver.
Use stream-specific thresholds rather than one global number. A car-data panel and a weather panel naturally have different rhythms. If a provider sends a null or lapped value, preserve that meaning; do not coerce it to zero. When a stream stops, show the last timestamp and an explicit stale state rather than silently freezing the whole dashboard.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Build the strategy view around decisions
A strategy panel should combine relative gaps, pace trend, pit timing, tyre context, race state and weather. Those inputs support comparison; they do not constitute an official strategy formula.
| Decision axis | Display | Required qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Pit timing | Projected stop lap, observed pit-lane or stop duration when available, and nearby traffic. | State whether the duration is observed, incomplete or estimated. |
| Tyre plan | Compound, stint number, stint age and planned next compound if the user enters one. | Degradation assumptions must be explicit; compound alone does not prove a future pace loss. |
| Pace and track position | Current interval, gap to leader, recent lap pace, rolling trend and position change. | Show the sample window and exclude invalid or incomplete laps. |
| Race state | Flags, safety-car or other race-control messages. | Identify the message timestamp because it can change pit-loss assumptions. |
| Weather | Latest available track or ambient readings and their trend. | Show the reading time and location or scope. |
For an undercut or overcut estimate, expose the inputs: assumed pit loss, expected out-lap pace, current rival gap, tyre-age effect, traffic penalty, and race-control state. A user should be able to change an assumption and see which output changed.
Implement the ingestion and state loop
The following pattern is deliberately provider-neutral. Replace the adapter calls with the current API client for your chosen source, and validate the provider’s schema at runtime.

continue
record.ingested_at = received_at
record.raw_id = raw_id
normalized_store.append(record)
state_store.update_latest(record)
event_bus.publish(record)
Run one task per stream, or use a message broker with separate consumer groups. A slow weather parser should not back up car samples. Add retry limits and dead-letter handling for malformed records; do not endlessly retry a payload that fails validation.
For a browser client, publish a compact state update rather than every raw sample. Include the value, source timestamp, ingestion timestamp, status and provenance:
{
"session_key": "...",
"driver_number": "...",
"metric": "interval",
"value": "...",
"source_timestamp": "...",
"ingested_at": "...",
"status": "fresh",
"origin": "observed"
}
Do not fill the ellipses in this illustrative shape with fabricated identifiers; your adapter supplies the actual provider values.
Calculate pace, gaps and pit windows transparently
Use small, testable functions for derived values. For example, a recent-pace trend can be calculated from valid laps in a selected window:
- Remove laps marked invalid, incomplete or affected by a rule your UI explicitly documents.
- Choose a window, such as the last user-selected number of valid laps, and display that window.
- Calculate the median or mean according to a stated rule; keep outliers visible rather than silently deleting them.
- Compare the resulting pace with the rival’s comparable window and attach the source timestamps.
A pit-window estimate can then combine projected stop lap, current gap, expected pit loss, out-lap pace and traffic. If any required input is missing, return “insufficient data” with the missing inputs instead of producing a precise-looking number.
Store the calculation inputs with the result. This makes a recommendation reproducible when a late timing record changes the state and lets the reader distinguish a new observation from a recalculated estimate.
Use tyre and energy research carefully
Research on tyre-energy prediction used historical team telemetry and examined explainability. That setup does not demonstrate that the same private inputs are present in a public API, nor that a public dashboard can reproduce a team’s model.

If you add a forecast, document:
- the training or calibration data source;
- which public fields are used at runtime;
- the forecast horizon and update time;
- assumptions about compound, stint age, traffic and weather;
- known conditions under which the model is unreliable.
Label the result “model estimate” and provide the observed values beside it. A forecast should never overwrite the measured lap time or tyre-stint record.
Design the dashboard layout for fast decisions
A practical desktop layout can use four areas:
- Race state bar: session name, lap, flag or safety-car state, and the latest race-control timestamp.
- Order and gaps table: position, driver, interval, gap to leader, last valid lap, pace trend, compound, stint age and freshness badges.
- Strategy timeline: stint blocks, observed pit events, projected stop markers and a clear distinction between observed and estimated markers.
- Context rail: weather readings, recent race-control messages, data-source status and per-stream last-update times.
Let a user expand a driver row to inspect the raw timestamp and calculation inputs. Color should reinforce status, not carry it alone; include text such as “stale,” “unknown” or “estimated” for accessibility and clarity.

Test with replay, delays and incomplete records
Before calling the dashboard live, replay a complete session and deliberately inject the failure modes that make strategy displays misleading.
- Deliver an interval record after a newer car-data record and verify that each panel keeps its own timestamp.
- Drop weather updates and confirm that weather becomes stale without changing timing values.
- Send a null gap or lapped value and verify that it is not rendered as zero.
- Switch from practice to qualifying and confirm that no driver state carries across sessions.
- Duplicate a record and verify idempotent storage using a provider event ID or a deterministic record key.
- Change a field type or remove an optional field in a fixture and ensure the adapter reports a schema error rather than silently corrupting data.
- Restart the ingestion worker and confirm that raw records and normalized state can rebuild the display.
Measure end-to-end delay from source timestamp to browser receipt, but report it as an observed application metric. Provider documentation describes update characteristics, not a guaranteed delivery latency for your infrastructure.
Respect the boundary between public feeds and FIA telemetry
The FIA technical regulations describe a regulated team-to-FIA system. In the 2026 Formula 1 Regulations: Technical Regulations, Section C, Issue 15, dated 10 December 2025, the FIA states: “The F1 Teams should transfer the real−time Telemetry data and events on the FIA network as requested by, and in the format defined by, the FIA.” That requirement does not mean a public API exposes the same complete data or operational access.
The same Issue 15 regulation says the Standard ECU data logger must be configured before the Race or Sprint Session to log for at least two hours and fifteen minutes without exceeding logger memory. This is a regulated equipment requirement, not a specification for your web application and not evidence that a public dashboard can retrieve the logger contents.
Use provider attribution, follow the provider’s terms, and describe an OpenF1-based project as unofficial. Do not imply affiliation with Formula 1 teams, the FIA or Formula 1 companies.

Plan for API and schema changes
Pin the adapter version you deploy, retain raw payloads, and run a schema-validation check at the start of each season. Keep a compatibility layer so the UI’s stable fields do not depend directly on provider spelling.
- Record the source name and adapter version with every normalized record.
- Monitor for fields documented as scheduled for removal and remove them from the UI only after a deliberate migration.
- For T1API, verify the current v2 key requirements and the documented v1 retirement date before deployment.
- For OpenF1, recheck live subscription status, endpoint fields and documented update characteristics when you implement or renew the service.
- Keep a historical fixture for each supported stream so a provider change can be detected in continuous integration.
A sensible build sequence
- Build a session selector and historical replay using one documented source.
- Implement raw storage and normalized tables before adding strategy calculations.
- Add laps, intervals, positions, pits, stints, race control and weather as independent adapters.
- Render timestamps and stale states before adding forecasts.
- Add explainable pace and pit-window calculations with visible assumptions.
- Run delay, null, duplicate and session-isolation tests against replay fixtures.
- Add live access only after the historical pipeline passes those tests and the provider’s current access terms are confirmed.
The result is a dashboard that tells the reader not only what the latest data says, but when it was measured, whether it is current, how it was derived and which assumptions support a strategic comparison.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I build the whole dashboard for free?
A historical OpenF1 implementation is documented as free without authentication for data from 2023 onward. OpenF1 documents real-time access as subscription-gated, so a free historical dashboard and a free live dashboard are different scopes.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why not combine all telemetry into one timestamped frame?
The documented streams have different update rhythms: car data is described at about 3.7 Hz, intervals at approximately four-second updates and weather every minute. Independent stream state with per-panel timestamps avoids implying synchronization that the feed does not provide.
Should a public dashboard display a tyre-degradation forecast?
Only as a clearly labeled model estimate with its inputs and assumptions. A cited tyre-energy study used historical team telemetry, which does not establish that the same private inputs are available through a public API.
What should happen when an API field changes?
Keep raw payloads, validate schemas, version your adapter and route invalid records to quarantine. Update the normalization layer deliberately instead of allowing a changed field to silently alter the strategy output.
