Build a reaction-time test by defining which inputs are accepted in each phase and exactly which browser events determine the displayed time. A small state machine—idle, waiting, ready, result, and finished—keeps early clicks, valid responses, retries, and results predictable. It also makes clear that the score is a browser-observed interval, not a clinical measurement.
How do I make a reaction time test?
Start by writing down the states, accepted inputs, and transition behavior before adding visual effects. One event should have one defined effect in the current state. A click or key press during the wait, for example, must not accidentally become a valid reaction score.
| Current state | Event | Next state | Behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Idle | Start | Waiting | Initialize the session and schedule a randomized delay. |
| Waiting | Early click or key press | Waiting, or a dedicated false-start state | Record a false start, not a valid reaction duration; tell the user whether the round will retry or be consumed. |
| Waiting | Delay completes | Ready | Present the cue and record the onset timestamp according to the chosen timing policy. |
| Ready | First valid response | Result | Capture the response once, calculate elapsed time, and reject duplicate responses. |
| Result | Continue, with rounds remaining | Waiting | Clear per-trial data and schedule the next randomized delay. |
| Result | Last round complete | Finished | Show the session summary and preserve individual observations if the test is used for research. |
This is a design pattern, not a state model required by a standard. The open-source Reflex research tool describes a comparable flow with a randomized wait, rejection of early clicks, response capture, and results; its authors describe it as “an open-source tool for measuring human reaction times.” Read the 2025 Reflex paper.

Make the false-start policy explicit
Choose whether an early input retries the same round or consumes a trial. Apply that rule consistently to the interface and recorded data. Reflex, for example, uses a one-to-three-second randomized interval and treats clicks during the wait as bad clicks that restart the round; that is one implementation, not a universal standard.

Keep controls and feedback in sync
Disable controls that have no meaning in a state, or ignore their inputs without changing state. When a transition occurs, update the underlying data and visible feedback together. The button label should not suggest that a response will be accepted when the current state rejects it. Apply the same rules to pointer and keyboard input.
Protect sessions from stale timers
On reset or when a component is removed, cancel pending timers or make their callbacks verify that they still belong to the active session. Otherwise, a delay from an old round can change the display after a new session has begun.

How should I handle a click before the signal?
Treat it as a false start, not as a reaction time. The participant acted before the defined cue, so there is no valid cue-to-response interval for that attempt. Show a clear message such as “Too soon—this attempt was not timed,” then follow the retry or trial-count rule stated by the test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse a randomized wait to make the cue less predictable. A fixed delay encourages anticipation and can measure preparation as much as response. The wait range is a protocol choice: the one-to-three-second interval in Reflex is an example, not a recommended value for every test.

For useful records, distinguish valid responses from rejected inputs rather than silently discarding the latter. In a research-oriented tool, retain the trial sequence, false starts, protocol version, and relevant browser and device context. Reflex was built for configurable studies and raw-data output; the specific fields your study needs depend on its protocol.
What exactly does the displayed reaction time measure?
Define the score as an elapsed interval between two specified browser events: the test’s chosen cue-onset event and the accepted input event. Use a monotonic clock such as performance.now() for elapsed-time subtraction, rather than subtracting wall-clock dates. The W3C High Resolution Time specification describes this timing model and notes that browsers may reduce clock precision for security and privacy reasons. See the W3C High Resolution Time specification.

Choose and document the cue-onset event
Starting a timer when code decides to change the page does not establish when the changed frame appears. requestAnimationFrame() schedules a callback before repaint and supplies a frame timestamp, which can align a visual update with the browser’s rendering cycle. It does not reveal the exact instant the physical display emitted the cue: the panel response, compositor path, and scanout are not directly observed by ordinary page code. MDN documents requestAnimationFrame scheduling.
Browser-based stimulus timing can vary with browser, operating system, GPU acceleration, and visual technique. Garaizar and colleagues’ 2018 study recommends validating the exact setup when a one-frame deviation matters; its tested historical configurations do not guarantee behavior on current systems. Read the browser-stimulus timing study.

A concise disclosure for users is: “This score is the elapsed time observed by this browser between the test’s defined cue event and your input event. Your device and display affect it; it is not a clinical measurement.” Avoid implying precision beyond what the clock and rendering path support, and do not apply a universal lag correction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should results be summarized?
For a multi-trial session, state the number of trials, which attempts count, and how the summary is calculated. A casual test can show each valid attempt alongside a clearly labeled mean or median. Do not present the best score alone as representative: it hides variability and rewards repeated attempts.
For study use, retain trial-level observations rather than only a summary. Specify exclusions and analysis before interpreting group differences; the cited sources do not establish one universally correct summary statistic. Xu and Claypool’s 2025 paper reports data pooled from eight prior user studies involving 300 participants, mostly gamers, whose average was about 50 ms faster than figures reported for general-population online tools. That is a result for that particular sample and comparison, not a population benchmark or evidence that gaming caused the difference. See the study and its methods.

An online test can measure a repeatable interval between browser-observed events, but its result is affected by the browser, operating system, input path, and display. Scheduling a cue around a repaint can reduce avoidable ambiguity; it does not make a web page equivalent to laboratory timing equipment.
For casual feedback, describe the score as device-dependent and avoid claims of clinical accuracy. For experiments where frame-level timing matters, validate the precise browser, operating system, hardware, and stimulus technique used. The 2018 browser-stimulus study offers methodological caution, not a certification of current browser combinations.
