You can build a reliable progressive-overload tracker with OpenClaw by keeping your training plan in a private program.md file, logging every completed set, and requiring the agent to calculate the next target from the latest verified session. OpenClaw should apply rules you wrote—not invent a program, diagnose an injury, or make unconstrained coaching decisions.

The dependable build order is simple: create the workspace, define an unambiguous workout record, write exercise-specific progression rules, test the recommendation loop manually, and only then add reminders, cron jobs, and weekly reports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the tracker should do

A progressive-overload tracker has one job: turn a completed workout into the next load, repetition, or hold decision according to your written plan. For each exercise, OpenClaw should be able to answer four questions:

  • What was the latest completed session?
  • Did that session meet the prescribed sets and repetitions?
  • What effort or warning information was recorded, such as RPE, reps in reserve (RIR), or a note about pain and technique?
  • What does the exercise’s explicit rule prescribe next, after rounding to equipment you actually own?

It should also refuse to guess. If a set, load, date, exercise name, or rule is missing, it should ask for clarification instead of filling in a plausible value. If an exercise is not in your plan, it should ask whether you want to add it rather than inventing a target.

What it should not do

  • Replace your training plan with an automatically generated one.
  • Increase a load when prescribed repetitions were missed or the final set was excessively hard.
  • Override a warning in your notes.
  • Claim that its recommendations are clinically or scientifically validated.
  • Make a medical decision about pain, injury, fatigue, or readiness.

As Deven Goratela, the author of a May 2026 implementation tutorial, puts it: “The goal is not to let OpenClaw control your training.” The practical interpretation is to make your written rules the authority and use the agent as a careful calculator and record keeper.

Choose the data and file layout first

Keep the plan, workout history, and generated reports in OpenClaw’s private workspace at ~/.openclaw/workspace. The official setup documentation describes this directory as the place for skills, prompts, and memories. Treat it as personal health information: restrict access, avoid publishing it, and make private backups.

The names are conventions, not requirements. The important separation is that program.md contains rules, workout files contain observations, and reports contain derived summaries. Do not put a changing recommendation in the plan file unless you intentionally changed the plan.

Minimum workout record

Every completed exercise entry needs the exercise name, date, sets, repetitions, and weight. Add RPE or RIR when you want effort to affect progression. Notes are optional but valuable for technique concerns, unusual fatigue, equipment changes, or pain.

# 2026-05-04

## Bench press
- Sets: 3
- Reps: 5, 5, 5
- Weight: 80 kg
- RPE: 8
- RIR: 2
- Notes: Normal technique; no pain

Store each set separately whenever failures or uneven repetitions matter. A compact record such as 5, 5, 3 tells the agent that the prescribed work was not completed, whereas an average or a single total could hide that fact.

Do not let missing data become invented data

Tell OpenClaw to stop and ask when a log is ambiguous. For example, “squat 100 for three sets” does not establish whether the repetitions were 5, 5, 5, whether 100 refers to kilograms or pounds, or whether all three sets were completed. The agent should ask for those details before changing the next target.

# My Training Program

## Equipment
- Barbell weight: 20 kg
- Plates available per side: 25, 20, 10, 5, 2.5, 1.25 kg
- Smallest load increase for a barbell: 2.5 kg total

## Weekly schedule
- Monday: Day A — Lower
- Wednesday: Day B — Upper

## Day A — Lower
- Back squat: 3x5
- Romanian deadlift: 3x8–12

## Day B — Upper
- Bench press: 3x5

## Progression rules
- Add weight only when all prescribed sets and reps are completed.
- For double progression, add reps within the range before adding weight.
- Hold the current weight when target reps are missed.
- Hold the current weight when the final working set is RPE 9 or higher.
- Hold the current weight when notes flag a concern; ask for confirmation before changing it.
- Round suggestions down to the nearest loadable weight.
- Ask before adding an exercise or changing a prescription.

Write a separate rule where exercises differ. “Add weight after success” is not precise enough if one lift increases by 2.5 kg, another by 5 kg, and a third uses a repetition range. State the trigger, the amount, and the new set-and-repetition prescription.

Why equipment belongs in the plan

A mathematically valid target may be impossible to load. If your smallest practical increase is 2.5 kg total, a suggestion of 81 kg is not actionable. Listing the bar weight and plates lets OpenClaw calculate total load and round the answer to an available configuration. If you train with dumbbells, machines, or fixed-weight equipment, list the actual increments and any side-by-side or per-handle constraints.

Define the recommendation loop

Use the same order every time a target is requested. The sequence prevents a recent but incomplete workout, an old personal rule, or an unavailable plate combination from producing a misleading answer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read program.md. Identify the exercise, prescription, progression method, effort caps, and available equipment.
  2. Find the latest completed entry. Search workout history for the requested exercise and use the newest dated session that is marked complete.
  3. Check the prescription. Compare every recorded set and repetition with the planned requirement. Do not treat a partial workout as a successful one.
  4. Review effort and notes. Use RPE, RIR, and notes as explicit hold conditions when the plan says they matter.
  5. Apply the exercise-specific rule. Decide whether to add load, add repetitions, repeat the target, or ask a question.
  6. Round the result. Convert the suggested load to a configuration supported by the listed bar, plates, dumbbells, or machine increments.
  7. Return the target and one-sentence reason. Include the exercise, load, sets, repetitions, and the condition that produced the decision.

A response should be auditable. “Bench press: 82.5 kg for 3×5. Reason: all prescribed sets and reps were completed at RPE 8, so the written 2.5 kg increase applies.” is better than “Go heavier next time.”

Implement common progression rules

Linear progression

For a fixed prescription, increase the load only after every required repetition is completed and the effort remains within the stated cap.

Latest entry Rule Next target Reason
Bench press: 80 kg, 3×5, RPE 8 Add 2.5 kg after all prescribed reps 82.5 kg for 3×5 All prescribed reps were completed at an acceptable effort
Bench press: 80 kg, 5, 5, 3, RPE 10 Add 2.5 kg only after a complete 3×5 80 kg for 3×5 The final set missed the target and effort was very high

The second row is a hold, not a failure of the tracker. Repeating the load gives you another opportunity to complete the prescription under the rule you chose.

Double progression

Double progression uses a repetition range. Keep the load fixed while repetitions move toward the top of the range; increase the load only when every set reaches that upper boundary.

Latest entry Rule Next target
Romanian deadlift: 80 kg for 3×10 Range 3×8–12; add 5 kg after 3×12 80 kg for 3×11
Romanian deadlift: 80 kg for 3×12 Range 3×8–12; add 5 kg after 3×12 85 kg for 3×8

Record repetitions for each set. If the entry is 12, 12, 10, the top of the range was not reached on all sets, so the load should remain 80 kg and the next repetition target should follow the rule you wrote for incomplete progression.

RPE, RIR, and warning holds

RPE is a perceived-effort score; RIR is the number of repetitions you believe remained. They are optional fields, but they make a conservative rule possible. A plan might say to hold the load when the final working set is RPE 9 or higher, or when RIR is zero. If your plan does not define how effort affects progression, OpenClaw should report the effort and ask whether the rule should be applied rather than silently creating one.

Notes can also force a hold. “Knee pain,” “lost bracing,” or “machine felt faulty” should be treated as a concern when your plan says concerns require confirmation. The tracker can preserve the note and repeat the target; it should not diagnose the cause or recommend treatment.

Give OpenClaw an explicit operating prompt

A prompt makes the control boundary visible and repeatable. Adapt the wording to your own files, but keep the non-invention requirements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Use ~/.openclaw/workspace/program.md as the only authority for exercises,
sets, reps, progression rules, RPE/RIR caps, and equipment.

For every target request:
1. Read program.md.
2. Find the latest completed log for the exercise.
3. Verify each prescribed set and rep.
4. Review RPE, RIR, and notes.
5. Apply only the exercise-specific rule in program.md.
6. Round the load down to an available configuration.
7. Return exercise, load, sets, reps, and one-sentence reason.

Never infer missing sets, reps, loads, dates, units, or effort scores.
Ask a clarification question instead. Hold the load when reps are missed,
the effort cap is exceeded, or notes flag a concern. Ask before adding an
exercise or changing a rule. Do not provide medical advice.

The prompt does not replace the plan file. It tells the agent how to consult it and what to do when the evidence is incomplete.

Build the tracker in stages

Stage 1: install and secure the workspace

Use an official installation path that fits your environment: a package-manager install, a source build, or a hosted installer are documented options. Whichever route you choose, confirm that OpenClaw can read and write ~/.openclaw/workspace, then create the private plan and history directories. Keep backups outside any shared chat export or public repository.

Stage 2: test direct logging

Enter several sessions manually before connecting other channels. Test a complete success, a missed repetition, an RPE at the hold threshold, an unavailable load, an ambiguous entry, and an exercise absent from the plan. Inspect both the saved log and the recommendation.

  • 45LB OLYMPIC WEIGHT PLATE - Single plate adds precise resistance for progressive strength training on compatible 2-inch Olympic bars and machines.
  • SOLID CAST IRON CONSTRUCTION - Durable cast iron core with a machined 2-inch center hole fits Olympic barbells and plate-loaded strength equipment.
  • DURABLE BLACK FINISH - Baked enamel coating helps resist chipping and wear while raised contrasting markings make weight identification easier.
  • SECURE GRIP DESIGN - Integrated grip openings improve control while carrying, loading, unloading and using plates for off-bar exercises.
  • VERSATILE STRENGTH TRAINING - Use for squats, deadlifts, presses, rows, powerlifting, bodybuilding, endurance work and full-body home gym training.

Stage 3: add a communication channel

Direct chat is the simplest input. A messaging channel such as Telegram or WhatsApp can make logging convenient, but it adds parsing and delivery failure modes. Keep the same structured fields regardless of channel. A message such as “Bench, 82.5 kg, 5/5/5, RPE 8” should produce the same stored record and target as an equivalent direct-chat entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stage 4: automate only after the loop is reliable

Add scheduled jobs for daily targets only after manual tests show that dates, exercise selection, rule application, and rounding are correct. A continuously running Gateway is useful for reminders and reports; a local installation can work when the machine and Gateway are available. Automation cannot repair a vague plan or incomplete log.

Add reminders, HEARTBEAT.md, and reports

Cron reminders

A cron job can send the day’s planned session or ask whether a scheduled workout was completed. Keep the reminder informational: it should quote the target generated from the latest verified entry and link the user back to the log workflow. Do not let a reminder create a workout record merely because it was sent.

HEARTBEAT.md checks

Use HEARTBEAT.md for periodic checks such as:

  • A scheduled session has no completed log.
  • A workout was logged with missing required fields.
  • An exercise has repeatedly missed its prescription.
  • A note or effort score meets a deload or hold trigger that you explicitly defined.

A check should identify the condition and ask for confirmation where your plan requires it. It should not silently rewrite loads or declare a deload without a rule in program.md.

Weekly progress reports

A weekly report can summarize completed sessions, top loads, repetition progress, holds, and unresolved questions. Mark derived values as summaries, not new source data. If a week contains missing logs, say so instead of interpreting the absence as rest, failure, or completion.

Compare implementation choices

Decision Option 1 Option 2 Practical trade-off
Persistence Local machine Managed always-on Gateway Local storage offers direct control; an always-on service is convenient for scheduled reminders and reports.
Input channel Direct chat Telegram or WhatsApp Direct chat is easiest to validate; messaging improves convenience but adds parsing and delivery dependencies.
Rule location Plain program.md Custom OpenClaw skill A plain file is easy to inspect and edit; a skill can formalize repeated workflows after the rules are stable.
Data review Text history Spreadsheet or generated report Text is the simplest source record; tables and reports help identify trends but must remain derived views.
Control boundary Explicit rules and confirmation prompts Unconstrained coaching behavior Explicit boundaries make decisions auditable; unconstrained behavior can invent exercises or override warnings.

Start with the least complex option in each row. Complexity is justified only when it removes a real problem you have already observed.

  1. Log a complete fixed-repetition exercise and verify the exact planned increase.
  2. Log one missed repetition and verify that the load is held.
  3. Log a final-set RPE at or above your cap and verify that the load is held.
  4. Log an RPE or RIR value that is missing and verify that OpenClaw asks instead of guessing.
  5. Request a target that cannot be loaded with your listed plates and verify downward rounding.
  6. Use an exercise not listed in program.md and verify that OpenClaw asks before adding it.
  7. Enter a note that flags a concern and verify that the recommendation pauses or holds according to your rule.
  8. Check a weekly report against the raw logs for dates, sets, repetitions, and loads.

Only after those checks pass should you add photo logging, spreadsheets, shared reports, or additional automation. Image-based logging can be useful later, but it introduces another opportunity to misread a plate, exercise, or repetition count.

Troubleshoot common failures

The agent increases weight after a failed set

Inspect the log format first. If the entry stores only “3 sets” without per-set repetitions, the agent cannot know that one set failed. Record each set and make the completion condition explicit in program.md: every prescribed set and repetition must be completed before an increase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The suggested load cannot be assembled

Check whether the plan lists the bar weight and the actual plates per side. Then state that suggestions must be rounded down to the nearest loadable weight. If an exact increase is impossible, the result should be a valid lower target, not a fractional or unavailable load.

The recommendation uses an old session

Use unambiguous dates and mark entries as completed only after the workout is finished. Ask OpenClaw to select the latest dated completed entry for the requested exercise, not the latest message mentioning it. Correct duplicate or backfilled entries before relying on automation.

An exercise is missing from the plan

Do not add it implicitly. Ask whether to add the exercise, then specify its sets, repetitions, progression method, effort cap, and equipment constraints in program.md before requesting a target.

A reminder is useful but the target is wrong

Disable the reminder temporarily and test the recommendation loop manually. Scheduled delivery can make an incorrect decision appear authoritative. Fix the source rule or log parsing first, then re-enable the schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand the limits

Available implementation documentation and worked examples do not establish a controlled study, accuracy benchmark, adherence percentage, or training-outcome statistic for an OpenClaw progressive-overload tracker. Treat the system as a personal record-and-rule tool. Its quality depends on complete logs, precise rules, correct equipment data, and your review of unusual situations.

The tracker also cannot determine whether a symptom is an injury, whether a missed session requires a deload, or whether a prescribed exercise is appropriate for you unless you have written a specific, safe rule—and even then, medical and coaching decisions belong with qualified professionals. Keep a human confirmation step for pain, major fatigue, repeated failures, and any change to the program.

Maintain the system as your program changes

  • Version or date major changes to program.md so an old workout can still be interpreted in context.
  • Keep units explicit, especially if equipment or logs may use both kilograms and pounds.
  • Record substitutions as substitutions; do not merge them into the original exercise history.
  • Review the plate inventory whenever you buy, remove, or relocate equipment.
  • Back up the workspace privately and test that a backup can be restored.
  • Audit a few recommendations each week against the written rule and raw log.

When the core loop is stable, a custom skill can package recurring actions such as parsing a message, saving a dated entry, or generating a report. Keep the underlying rules visible in program.md so you can inspect and edit them without reverse-engineering a prompt or skill.

Bottom line

Build the smallest trustworthy system first: a private workspace, a precise program.md, complete per-set logs, and a recommendation loop that reads the latest completed session, applies one explicit rule, respects effort and warning holds, and rounds to real equipment. Validate it manually for a week. Cron reminders, messaging channels, HEARTBEAT.md, reports, and custom skills are useful extensions—but they should automate a correct decision process, never replace it.
