Lovable can generate a portfolio website from a plain-language prompt, but a polished result still depends on the work you bring to it: clear project examples, accurate copy, strong images, and careful testing. Lovable’s official materials describe a prompt-and-refine workflow with code editing, publishing, custom domains, and GitHub sync. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not a guarantee that a generated portfolio will be ready to publish without review.

Decide what the portfolio needs to accomplish

Before opening the builder, identify who should visit the site and what you want them to do next. A designer seeking client inquiries, a developer seeking a role, and an illustrator showing a body of work need different project details and calls to action.

  • Choose a primary audience: for example, hiring managers, prospective clients, or collaborators.
  • Pick a primary action: viewing a case study, contacting you, or following a link to more work.
  • Keep the scope lean: a home page, a small set of project pages or sections, a short bio, and a contact route are enough for many portfolios.

This is planning advice, not a feature Lovable performs automatically. The builder can create pages and sections, but you need to decide which work belongs on the site and what each page should communicate.

Prepare the content and visual direction

Gather the material you want the site to present before prompting. This makes it easier to judge whether the generated structure supports the work rather than merely looking complete.

HTML and CSS: Design and Build Websites
  • HTML CSS Design and Build Web Sites
  • Comes with secure packaging
  • It can be a gift option
  • Project names, concise descriptions, your role, and the outcome or contribution you can substantiate.
  • Images that you have permission to use, in suitable dimensions and quality.
  • A brief biography, preferred contact method, and links you intend to publish.
  • References for the visual tone you want, such as restrained editorial layouts, a light palette, or a dark portfolio with large project imagery.

Lovable’s website-builder page lists portfolio creation, plain-language descriptions, generated layouts and styling, templates, and refinement through chat. It names a “Dark Creative Portfolio” template featuring hover-reveal imagery and a parallax hero. Treat these as options the vendor describes, not proof that any generated design will suit your content or audience. See Lovable’s website-builder details.

Prompt for a useful first structure

Describe the audience, purpose, pages, content, and visual direction in one clear request. For example:

Create a responsive portfolio for [your profession] aimed at [your audience]. Include a home page with a concise introduction, selected projects with individual case-study sections, a short bio, and a contact route. Use [visual direction] and make project images prominent. Keep the navigation simple. Use only the project information and links I provide; do not invent client names, results, or credentials.

Replace the bracketed text with your real details before using the prompt. Ask for a structure that matches the material you have, rather than requesting decorative features that could distract from it. Lovable says its builder can create layouts from plain-language descriptions and refine them in chat; it also supports direct code editing when more precise changes are needed. Lovable’s builder page explains its editing options.

Inspect the generated site, then refine it

Review the working pages before adding more detail. Check whether the navigation makes sense, project links lead to the right places, and each project gives a visitor enough context to understand your contribution. Correct invented or inaccurate copy rather than polishing it.

  1. Check the page hierarchy and navigation against the scope you planned.
  2. Replace generic text with verified biography and project information.
  3. Adjust layout, typography, color, spacing, and image presentation in chat or through code editing.
  4. Preview the revised pages at narrow and wide screen sizes, and check that important content remains legible and reachable.

Lovable describes a workflow of prompting, inspecting pages and navigation, refining the design, and publishing. Its Academy also recommends using version reversion and logs when recovering from problems; an automatic “Try to fix” action may help with build errors, but it is not a guarantee of a fix or of preserving every change. Read Lovable Academy’s guidance.

Test the details that a generated preview cannot verify for you

Do not assume that a visually complete page is operational. Test it as a visitor would, including on a phone and with the actual links and contact setup you plan to publish.

  • Links: open each project, social, and contact link; check for mistakes and unintended destinations.
  • Images: confirm they load, crop sensibly, and are yours to use. Check how they appear on smaller screens.
  • Contact route: submit a test message if you use a form, and verify where the submission goes. Lovable says websites support forms, but that does not establish that a particular form is configured or delivering messages correctly.
  • Mobile and accessibility basics: check text size, contrast, keyboard navigation, and whether meaningful images have useful text alternatives.
  • Page metadata: review titles, descriptions, and social-sharing previews for accuracy.

Lovable says its websites support editable metadata and forms. Its use-case page also describes automatic page titles, meta descriptions, Open Graph tags, sitemaps, robots.txt, and server-side rendered HTML. These are technical search-readiness features, not a promise of rankings, traffic, or employment results. See Lovable’s website use-case details.

Publish on a subdomain or connect a custom domain

Lovable says a site can be published to a Lovable subdomain or a custom domain, with hosting and SSL handled by the platform. A custom domain can make a portfolio easier to share, but verify the published address, page behavior, and contact route after setup rather than relying only on the editor preview. Lovable describes its publishing and domain options. Its Academy also covers custom-domain setup. See the Academy guidance.

Decide whether GitHub sync and code access matter

For a straightforward showcase, you may not need backend features. Lovable’s use-case page identifies TanStack Start as the website product’s foundation and Supabase for database, authentication, storage, and real-time features. Those capabilities can support more complex projects, but they are not automatically necessary for a portfolio with static project information and a contact route.

Lovable says projects can sync with GitHub and that developers can continue working with the code. Its pricing page says users own the websites, code, customer data, and AI output, subject to third-party rights in underlying AI models. That provides a route to retain and hand off code; it does not establish effortless migration or independence from platform services. Lovable’s use-case page discusses GitHub and its technology; its pricing FAQ states the ownership terms.

Account for credits and possible usage costs

Lovable’s pricing terms are changeable. As checked on October 7, 2026, its pricing FAQ said the free plan included a daily grant of five build credits, up to 30 per month, along with monthly grants of 20 Cloud credits and four credits for AI features in apps. Paid subscriptions also included plan credits and described daily build and monthly Cloud grants; some regional plans capped daily grants at 30 per month. Check the current terms for your region before relying on those amounts. View the current pricing FAQ.

Lovable says hosting for smaller or new apps is often covered by included grants, while significant traffic or app size can lead to additional usage costs. That distinction matters if a portfolio later grows into a feature-heavy site or attracts substantial traffic; the listed grants are not a guarantee that every hosting or cloud workload will remain free.
