A reliable podcast workflow moves in one direction: plan the episode and its metadata, prepare and test the recording setup, record, edit and protect the files, publish through a host or destination, then verify the release. You do not need a particular app or expensive gear to begin; you do need a repeatable sequence and a clear decision about who maintains your show’s RSS feed.

1. Plan the episode before you record

Write down the topic, intended listener, format, participants, recording date and release date. Draft the episode title and description before uploading so missing details do not hold up publishing. These are practical planning choices rather than requirements imposed by a particular platform.

Decide whether the episode is audio-only, video, or both. That choice affects how you record, edit and publish, as well as which destinations you need to check afterward.

2. Prepare your room and recording setup

Choose the microphone and connection

A USB microphone connects directly to a computer. An XLR microphone needs an audio interface to connect to one. A basic setup can be enough to start; an interface is relevant only if you choose an XLR microphone. Use headphones while recording so playback from speakers does not bleed back into the microphone.

Select the input and check the level

In Audacity, choose the microphone under Recording device and your headphones under Playback device. For a single voice recorded with one microphone, use a mono track. Audacity’s recording guidance recommends normal speech peaks between −18 dB and −6 dB, leaving room below clipping. Check the meter while speaking at your usual volume rather than whispering or shouting into the microphone.

Reduce room noise and echo

Choose a quiet room and, where practical, reduce reflective surfaces that make the voice sound echoey. Before the full take, record a short test and listen through headphones. Check for hum, background noise, echo, a missing input, and peaks that distort. A few seconds of room silence in a recording can be useful when applying noise reduction later, but prevention is safer: software cannot reliably undo clipped audio or poor acoustics.

3. Record, then check the take

  1. Start with a brief test recording at normal speaking volume.
  2. Listen to it on headphones. Confirm that the voice is clear, the right microphone is active, and there is no obvious clipping, feedback or distracting noise.
  3. Record the episode. If you make a mistake, pause and restart the sentence; the edit can remove the false start.
  4. Listen to the recording before moving on. Confirm that the beginning and ending are present and that no section is missing or unintelligible.

4. Edit while keeping a safe copy

Protect the recording first

Keep an editable project as well as a separate audio export. Audacity’s recording manual recommends making a safety export in WAV or AIFF immediately after recording and before editing. Save the project too; Audacity’s getting-started guidance covers saving a project and exporting audio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make a focused quality-control edit

Remove clear mistakes and long stretches of dead air, check transitions and levels, and listen for abrupt cuts. Then listen to the exported file from beginning to end—not only to the project timeline—to catch export problems and confirm that the publication copy is the one you intended. There is no single loudness target established here for every show, so do not treat one number as a universal requirement.

5. Choose who owns publishing and the RSS feed

RSS-hosted publishing

In an RSS workflow, you upload and manage episodes with your podcast hosting provider, which maintains the feed used by listening platforms. If a show is submitted to Apple Podcasts from an RSS feed, Apple says the episode cannot be updated in Apple Podcasts Connect; make changes through the third-party host instead. Apple requires an episode title and enclosure tags, and recommends tags for episode type, episode number and release date.

Apple also says: “All shows must pass technical validations and a review process before they’re made available on Apple Podcasts.” A new show therefore needs to pass validation and review before it appears there. Allow for that step when planning a first release.

Direct publishing to a destination

A direct-to-platform workflow is different from distributing an RSS feed. Riverside documents a route in which an edited export opens in Spotify for Creators as a draft; the creator enters the episode details and chooses whether to publish or schedule it. In this route, complete the destination’s episode details and release action rather than assuming the RSS host has handled them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Submit the show and verify each release

  1. Choose the listening platforms you want the show to reach and connect or submit the RSS feed wherever required.
  2. Check which destinations your host can distribute to and whether any require a separate submission or direct upload. Riverside documents hosting distribution to connected Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube platforms.
  3. For a scheduled episode, confirm the release time in the workflow you selected. Riverside documents publishing scheduled hosted episodes to its RSS feed at the scheduled time.
  4. After the first release—and after later scheduled releases—check the episode on each intended destination. Confirm that it appears, the title and description are correct, and the audio plays as expected.
  5. If an RSS episode needs an update on Apple Podcasts, make the change at the third-party host, not in Apple Podcasts Connect.

Decision What to check
Format Are you producing audio only, video, or both?
Recording Is the show a simple solo recording, or do you need to record remote guests and separate tracks?
Editing Will basic trimming and level checks be enough, or do you need a more involved multitrack edit?
Publishing ownership Do you want a host to maintain an RSS feed, or are you publishing directly to a specific platform?
Distribution Which platforms can be connected, and does each destination require automatic distribution, a separate submission or a direct upload?
Schedule and review Does the workflow support the release timing and any platform validation or review steps your show needs?

Common problems and fixes

  • The recording is distorted: Check the meter while speaking at normal volume and lower the input level if peaks clip. Preventing clipping is safer than trying to repair it afterward.
  • The microphone is missing or the recording is silent: Confirm the selected input. In Audacity, check Recording device, then make and play back another short test before recording the episode.
  • The voice sounds echoey or noisy: Try a quieter room and reduce reflective surfaces where practical. Record a test and listen before committing to a full take.
  • Speaker audio bleeds into the microphone: Monitor with headphones rather than speakers during recording.
  • An Apple RSS episode needs a correction: Update it through the third-party host; Apple Podcasts Connect cannot update an episode created from an RSS feed.
  • An episode is missing from a destination: Check whether the feed was connected or submitted there, whether the episode was actually published or scheduled in the selected workflow, and whether the destination’s validation or review step is complete.
  • The exported file has a problem the project does not: Re-export, then listen to the publication file from beginning to end before release.
