Build an Obsidian command center as a useful Home note that links to four destinations: an inbox for quick capture, today’s daily note, active projects, and reference indexes. It is a layout you create—not a separate built-in Obsidian feature. Start with core plugins and a small set of consistent note properties; add community plugins only when a specific limitation remains.
What an Obsidian command center is—and what it should do
Think of a command center as a small navigation and decision-making system for your vault. Its purpose is to make it easy to capture something, see what needs attention, open the work you are doing, and find durable reference material. Obsidian does not provide one official feature called a “command center”; you assemble the home note and linked views from features that suit your workflow.
A useful starter has four destinations:
- Inbox: a low-friction place for ideas, tasks, and notes you have not sorted yet.
- Today: the daily note where you can see priorities, appointments, and captures for the day.
- Projects: an index or filtered view of active work.
- Reference: indexes or area notes that lead to information you want to keep and reuse.
Keep the Home note focused on choosing where to go next. It does not need to display every note, task, calendar item, and reference on one screen. A simple set of links is easier to maintain than an elaborate dashboard whose usefulness depends on constantly updating many sections.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a dashboard design you can maintain
Before setting up plugins, decide how much structure you will actually keep current. More metadata and automation can make views more precise, but they also create upkeep. A dashboard should reflect your habits, not impose a second system you have to manage.

| Design | Setup and upkeep | Metadata needed | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Link-based Home note | Lowest; update links when destinations change | Little or none | Anyone who wants a reliable starting point without elaborate filtering |
| Home note with Bases views | Moderate; keep note properties consistent | Properties such as status, due, and area |
People who want sortable, filterable lists of projects or other notes |
| Visual overview with Canvas | Varies; the overview needs tending as relationships change | Not required for a spatial map | Work where seeing connections spatially is more useful than a list |
These are design choices, not required Obsidian configurations. You can combine them—for example, use a link-based Home note, a filtered project view, and a Canvas for one complex area—without turning the whole vault into a visual board.
Build the starter Home note
- Create a note named
Home. Put it somewhere that is easy to find, then add links to your Inbox, Projects index, and reference or area indexes. Use the actual note names in your vault so the links lead to real destinations. - Create or choose the destination notes. If you already have a daily-note setup, use that rather than creating a parallel system. If you do not, create an Inbox note and a Projects index, then add reference or area notes only for categories you expect to revisit.
- Organize the Home note around actions. Put quick capture and today’s note where they are easy to reach; keep active work and reference navigation distinct. A short link list is enough to begin.
- Open Home when you start a session. Use Obsidian’s Bookmarks feature to keep the note readily accessible. You can also bookmark important searches if you use them repeatedly. Bookmarks are among Obsidian’s core plugins; see the official core-plugin catalog.
Do not make the Home note the only place where important information exists. It is a launch point: the linked daily notes, project notes, and references remain the actual records. That separation makes it possible to simplify the dashboard without losing the underlying material.
Set up Daily notes and Templates for a repeatable routine
The core Daily notes and Templates plugins provide a built-in way to create a recurring capture and review structure. Daily notes creates or opens the note for a date; Templates can insert a prepared structure. Their settings let you choose a daily-note folder, date format, and template location. The available core building blocks are listed in Obsidian’s core-plugin documentation.

- Enable Daily notes and Templates. In Obsidian’s settings, enable the two core plugins if they are not already active.
- Choose a daily-note folder and date format. Set the folder where daily notes belong and the date format you want to use. Pick a format you can recognize and keep it consistent, especially if you already have notes in the vault.
- Choose a template location. Set the Templates plugin to use the folder where you keep templates, then select a template for daily notes in the Daily notes settings.
- Create a short daily template. Include only sections you expect to use: priorities, calendar or appointments, capture, and an end-of-day review. Leave room to write rather than filling the template with prompts that become routine clutter.
- Test the workflow. Open today’s daily note, confirm that it is created in the intended folder, and check that the expected template is applied. Adjust the folder, date format, or template selection if the note is missing or has the wrong structure.
A practical template can be as small as four headings: Priorities, Appointments, Capture, and Review. Treat the headings as prompts rather than obligations: if a section is consistently unused, remove it. The aim is a note you will open and write in, not a form you must complete perfectly.
Use properties and Bases for project views
If a plain Projects index is not enough, add a small, consistent set of properties to project notes. For example, a project might have a status, a due date when one is relevant, and an area that identifies its broader context. These names are recommendations for a workable scheme, not mandatory Obsidian fields. Choose properties you can reliably maintain, and avoid adding fields just because a dashboard could display them.
Bases is a core plugin for creating customizable views that edit, sort, and filter files using properties, according to Obsidian’s core-plugin catalog. That makes it a natural next step when you want a project view that can be organized by status or another property rather than maintained as a manually reordered list.

- Pick one note type to organize first. Start with project notes rather than trying to add metadata to the whole vault at once.
- Settle on a few property names and meanings. Decide what values such as project status mean in your own system. Consistency matters more than having a large number of properties.
- Add those properties to project notes. Apply the same names and conventions so a view can work across the notes you want it to show.
- Enable Bases and create a view for those notes. Configure a view around the properties you maintain—for example, a list of active projects that can be sorted or filtered by status.
- Link the view from Home or Projects. Keep the dashboard’s navigation clear; use the view when it helps answer what you should work on, and leave other project details in the project notes.
- Review whether the fields earn their upkeep. If you do not use a property to filter, sort, or make a decision, remove it from the workflow.
Bases depends on the quality of the properties you supply. A filtered view cannot compensate for inconsistent labels or stale statuses. If you are not ready to maintain properties, a manual Projects index is a sounder starting point.
Choose core plugins before community plugins
For this setup, the core plugin set can cover the main needs: Daily notes and Templates for a recurring routine; Bases for property-based views; Bookmarks and Search for navigation; Workspaces for a reusable pane layout; and Canvas for a spatial overview. Obsidian’s core-plugin catalog describes the available built-in options.
Workspaces are useful if you repeatedly arrange the same panes for a particular kind of work. Canvas is optional and best used when relationships are easier to understand visually than as a list. Neither is necessary for a functional command center. Search can also serve as a lightweight route to recurring groups of notes, while Bookmarks can keep Home and useful searches close at hand.

Only look for a community plugin after you can name the limitation you need to solve—for example, a specialized recurring-task workflow that your current setup does not handle. Evaluate a plugin for that job, rather than installing a large bundle in anticipation of needs you may never have. Obsidian says it automatically scans each version of a community plugin or theme in its official directory for security vulnerabilities, code quality issues, and malware. That is a screening measure, not a guarantee of zero risk; see Obsidian’s plugin-security guidance.
- Check whether the plugin is maintained and whether its purpose matches your specific need.
- Consider whether the access it requests makes sense for the feature it provides.
- Back up your vault before making an important workflow dependent on it.
- Keep the core-plugin version of your workflow usable where possible, so a plugin problem does not strand your notes.
Add optional launch automation with Obsidian URI
Obsidian URI is a scheme for asking the Obsidian application to perform supported actions; it is not an ordinary web URL. The official documentation describes actions that can open a vault or note, create a note, open or create a daily note, and open a search. The daily-note action requires the Daily notes plugin to be enabled. Consult Obsidian’s URI documentation for the supported forms and parameters.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
This can be useful if a launcher or another automation tool should open a particular note or search. URI values need to be encoded correctly, so use the documented format rather than improvising a link when note names or search text contain special characters. Behavior also depends on local application and operating-system setup; do not assume the scheme will be handled identically on every device.

- Identify one action worth automating. For example, decide whether you need to open Home, a specific note, or a daily note.
- Use the official URI syntax for that action. Check the required values and encoding in the URI documentation.
- Test it on the device where you will use it. Confirm that the link opens the intended vault and note, and that the required plugin is enabled for a daily-note action.
- Keep a normal route available. Retain an in-app bookmark or navigation path in case the launcher or URI handler is unavailable.
Plan for multiple devices, privacy, and recovery
Sync is a workflow decision, not a prerequisite for a command center. Choose an approach according to the devices you use, how you want conflicts handled, and your privacy and recovery requirements. Obsidian’s guide covers Obsidian Sync and other approaches, including platform-specific options; use its sync guidance to compare methods for your device combination rather than assuming one setup suits everyone.
If you use Obsidian Sync, review its security choices before relying on it. Obsidian’s security and privacy page describes end-to-end encryption as the default for a new remote vault, with standard encryption available as an alternative. With end-to-end encryption, you must retain the encryption password: the documentation warns that if it is lost, it cannot be recovered and the encrypted remote data becomes unusable. The same page states that Obsidian does not encrypt the local vault, so remote encryption should not be mistaken for encryption of files on your device.
The official security page lists note-version retention as one month on the Standard plan and twelve months on the Plus plan, with attachment versions retained for two weeks. Plan details can change; check the linked page for current terms before choosing a plan or relying on a particular retention period. Version history is also not a substitute for an independent backup of important notes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- List the devices on which you need access and confirm that the chosen approach supports them.
- Decide how you will recognize and resolve conflicts when the same material changes on more than one device.
- Choose the privacy model you need and understand what it protects locally and remotely.
- Keep a recovery path for important data, including any encryption password required to access a remote vault.
Review the system weekly and remove friction
A dashboard is only useful if its links, views, and statuses still reflect your work. Set aside a short weekly review to empty or sort the Inbox, update project status where it has changed, and check whether the Home note still points to the places you use. This is a maintenance recommendation, not an Obsidian requirement.
- Move captured items to a project, reference note, or other destination—or decide they are no longer needed.
- Update properties only when the change affects a view or a decision.
- Remove Home links, template sections, properties, or plugin features that have stopped helping.
- Check that the workflow still works on the devices you rely on, especially after changing sync or automation settings.
When something goes wrong, start with the simplest layer. If a project is absent from a Bases view, check its properties and whether they match the view’s filters. If a daily note opens in the wrong place or with the wrong structure, check the daily folder, date format, template location, and selected template. If an automated link fails, verify the URI format and local handling, then use the normal in-app route. These checks address the common points where this setup depends on matching configuration and note data.
Quick Recap
A sensible order for building your command center
- Create Home, Inbox, a daily-note destination, Projects, and only the reference indexes you need.
- Enable Daily notes and Templates and confirm that the daily routine works.
- Use the plain Home links for a while before adding metadata.
- Add a few consistent project properties, then use Bases if a filtered view would improve decisions.
- Add Bookmarks, Workspaces, Canvas, or a community plugin only for a demonstrated navigation or workflow need.
- Decide whether multi-device sync is necessary, and make privacy and recovery choices with the current official guidance in view.
- Review the setup weekly; simplify it whenever maintenance starts to outweigh the value of the view.
