A reliable OCR regression suite combines a versioned image corpus, human-verified ground truth, pinned recognition settings, exact assertions for business-critical fields, and CER/WER thresholds for broader text quality. A release passes only when every contractual field is correct and both aggregate and per-class metric gates stay within configured limits.

What a pass/fail OCR regression suite must prove

OCR failures are often silent: a parser still returns a plausible invoice number, date, or total after a model, preprocessing step, language file, or page-segmentation change. A useful suite makes that drift visible and assigns an unambiguous result to every build.

Each test case must pair an immutable source image with trusted expected output. The test runner must execute the same parser configuration that production uses, record the raw OCR text and normalized text, and evaluate two different kinds of evidence:

  • Contract assertions check exact values for fields where one character changes the business meaning, such as totals, dates, account numbers, SKUs, and required labels.
  • Corpus metrics measure character-level and word-level drift against frozen expected text using character error rate (CER) and word error rate (WER).

The release gate should be conjunctive: every contract assertion passes, aggregate thresholds pass, and each document class remains within its own limits. An attractive overall average must not hide a class of receipts, rotated scans, or numeric-heavy pages becoming unusable.

Define the test contract before collecting images

Specify what is exact

Write a field contract for each parser output. State whether comparison is exact, numeric, date-aware, or set-based, and identify fields that tolerate no substitution. For example, an invoice total of 104.08 must not be accepted as 104.80; an account identifier must retain every digit and required leading zero. Required labels can also be exact when downstream routing depends on them.

Specify what is measured statistically

Use CER and WER for free-form text, descriptions, addresses, and other regions where a single exact string assertion is too brittle. Store absolute limits and a maximum permitted regression from the current baseline in configuration. A build must fail if either limit is exceeded, even when the other metric improves.

Record the decision inputs

Every report should identify the parser version, OCR engine version, model or trained-data checksum, language, page-segmentation mode, preprocessing recipe, normalization policy, corpus revision, and test-run date. Without these inputs, a pass cannot be reproduced and a failure cannot be attributed.

Build a versioned corpus with trusted ground truth

Use stable case directories

Give every case a permanent ID and keep all artifacts under version control or an equivalent immutable store. A practical directory contains the original image, expected text or structured fields, and metadata:

Artifact Purpose
image.* Untouched source scan or photograph used as the test input.
expected.txt Human-verified transcription for CER/WER comparison.
expected.json Exact or typed fields used by contract assertions.
case.yaml Language, layout class, preprocessing recipe, OCR engine version, model checksum, parser version, and normalization policy.
Derived images Optional crops, masks, deskewed images, or other preprocessing outputs, stored with a versioned or content-addressed name.

Never replace the source image with a preprocessed copy. Keeping the raw input lets a reviewer determine whether a failure originated in the image, the preprocessing pipeline, or recognition itself. Keep raw OCR output and normalized output as separate artifacts; normalization should never erase the evidence needed to diagnose a change.

Verify ground truth in two passes

  1. Transcribe the text or fields from the source image without consulting the parser output.
  2. Have a second reviewer check ambiguous characters, punctuation, decimal separators, line breaks that matter to the parser, and leading or trailing zeros.
  3. Record any genuinely unreadable region as an explicit policy decision rather than silently guessing. Cases with uncertain truth should be excluded from hard gates until resolved.
  4. Freeze the approved expected files and review any later edit as a test change, with the reason documented.

Partition by production variation

Organize cases into classes that reflect the risks users actually encounter. Useful dimensions include scan quality, rotation, font, language or script, single-column versus table layout, dense versus sparse text, supported handwriting, and fields containing punctuation or digits. Keep the class label in metadata so reports can show per-class results.

Reserve a held-out evaluation partition that is never used for tuning. Tesseract training documentation demonstrates that error can become very low on training images while rising sharply on another font or an independent set. A held-out set is therefore necessary to detect overfitting to the images used during development.

Pin every variable that can change recognition

OCR output is a function of more than the engine binary. Pin and report all of the following:

  • OCR engine version and build.
  • Model or trained-data files, including a checksum.
  • Language and script selection.
  • Page-segmentation mode and layout settings.
  • Image preprocessing steps, order, and parameters.
  • Dictionaries, word lists, and character patterns.
  • Parser version and extraction rules.
  • Unicode, whitespace, case, punctuation, and line-ending normalization.

Tesseract’s quality guidance identifies preprocessing, page-segmentation mode, dictionaries, word lists, and character patterns as factors that can alter recognition. Put those settings in the case metadata and include them in failure reports. A test that merely records the engine name but allows an unpinned model file or segmentation mode is not deterministic enough for release gating.

Use two assertion layers instead of one score

Layer Best for Typical failure meaning Gate
Exact contract assertions Totals, dates, identifiers, SKUs, required labels, and other structured fields. A business value changed or a parser mapping is wrong. Zero tolerance for designated critical fields.
CER Character-level drift in transcribed text. Insertions, deletions, or substitutions affect individual characters. Absolute and baseline-delta limits, preferably per class.
WER Word-level readability and token boundaries. A word was lost, split, merged, or changed. Absolute and baseline-delta limits, preferably per class.

Exact assertions catch a one-character error that a favorable corpus average could dilute. CER reveals small substitutions and punctuation damage; WER shows whether readers or downstream token-based logic receive the wrong words. Neither metric replaces the other, and neither replaces field contracts.

Compute CER and WER against frozen text

For a reference string, calculate character error rate as (S + D + I) / N, where S is substitutions, D deletions, I insertions, and N the number of reference characters. Word error rate uses the same edit-distance terms over reference words. Report the alignment convention and whether spaces, punctuation, or line breaks are included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tesseract evaluation examples report both CER and WER, while its UNLV evaluation tools compare OCR output with matching ground-truth text and print accuracy summaries. Treat those outputs as measurement methods, not universal acceptance targets: an illustrative value from a tutorial corpus does not establish a threshold for your documents.

Report more than one average

  • Case-level CER, WER, and exact-field results.
  • Per-class aggregates for each layout, language, quality, or field-risk class.
  • Macro averages, giving each class equal weight.
  • Weighted corpus totals, reflecting the actual case count or expected production mix.
  • Maximum regression from the approved baseline for each metric.

Macro and weighted results answer different questions. A large class of easy pages can make the weighted total look healthy while a small but important class fails. Keep both in the report and gate the classes that have a defined service requirement.

Make normalization explicit and test it separately

Decide how comparisons handle line endings, repeated whitespace, Unicode normalization, case, punctuation, and known OCR substitutions. Apply the same documented rule to expected and actual text, but retain the untouched OCR output for review.

Normalization belongs in code and needs its own unit tests. Include cases proving that a permitted whitespace change is ignored, while a changed digit, decimal separator, or identifier character remains a failure. An undocumented normalization rule is an unreviewed way to hide a regression.

Implement data-driven tests

Use one test function for every case and let metadata drive the configuration. Pytest parametrization and fixture APIs support this pattern: the same logic can run across images, parser configurations, and document classes without copying test code.

def test_case(case):
    raw = run_ocr(
        image=case.image,
        engine_version=case.engine_version,
        model_checksum=case.model_checksum,
        language=case.language,
        segmentation=case.segmentation,
        preprocessing=case.preprocessing,
    )
    normalized = normalize(raw, case.normalization)
    fields = parse(normalized, case.parser_version)

    assert_contract_fields(fields, case.expected_fields)
    cer = character_error_rate(case.expected_text, normalized)
    wer = word_error_rate(case.expected_text, normalized)
    assert cer <= case.cer_limit
    assert wer <= case.wer_limit
    save_artifacts(case, raw, normalized, fields, cer, wer)

The example deliberately keeps the raw string, normalized string, parsed fields, and metrics as separate values. A failed assertion should still write all of them, along with the expected output and the active configuration, so a reviewer can reproduce the decision.

Choose thresholds from a measured baseline

Set hard rules for critical fields

For totals, identifiers, dates used for posting, and other high-risk outputs, require exact equality after the approved type conversion. Do not replace a hard rule with an average CER target. If a field legitimately allows multiple formats, encode the accepted forms explicitly and test the parser’s conversion separately.

Set class-specific metric limits

Measure a stable baseline on the frozen corpus, then choose CER and WER limits for each class. A dense table and a clean single-column page have different difficulty; forcing one global number either blocks useful changes or permits unacceptable degradation in the harder class.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limit regressions as well as absolute error

Store the approved baseline beside the code. Require the new result to remain below both the absolute class limit and the configured increase from baseline. This prevents a generous absolute threshold from allowing a significant decline. Any threshold or expected-output change should require a reviewed change with the reason recorded.

Design the CI workflow around runtime and risk

Pull-request smoke set

Run a small, representative set on every pull request. Include clean text, a difficult layout, a numeric-heavy case, and at least one historical failure that previously escaped detection. The smoke job should finish quickly enough to block unsafe changes before merge.

Full-corpus jobs

Run the complete corpus on merge, nightly, or release jobs according to runtime and the frequency of OCR model or preprocessing changes. The cadence can differ by repository, but every production candidate must be evaluated on the full approved set before release.

Machine-readable artifacts

Emit a report containing engine, model, parser, and corpus versions; each case’s expected and actual output; CER; WER; exact-field results; class aggregates; and a concise diff excerpt. Store it as a CI artifact. A pass/fail status without the evidence behind it forces reviewers to rerun the job manually and makes historical comparison difficult.

  1. Image or preprocessing: contrast, cropping, deskewing, thresholding, or resolution changed the pixels presented to OCR.
  2. Segmentation: the page mode or layout assumptions split columns, merged regions, or omitted text.
  3. Language or model: the selected language, trained-data file, dictionary, or character pattern changed recognition.
  4. Parser logic: OCR text is acceptable, but extraction or field mapping changed.
  5. Normalization: comparison rules altered whitespace, Unicode, case, punctuation, or separators incorrectly.
  6. Expected data: the fixture is wrong, incomplete, or no longer represents the approved source.

Compare raw output first, then normalized output, then parsed fields. This order prevents a parser fix from masking a recognition regression and prevents a normalization change from hiding a genuine OCR error.

Prevent overfitting and grow the corpus safely

Keep tuning images separate from evaluation images. Do not promote a case merely because the current implementation passes it. When a production failure appears, place the image in a quarantine queue, obtain human-verified ground truth, and reproduce the failure with the old version. After the fix is reviewed, promote the case into the permanent corpus with a test that would have failed before the fix.

Track corpus revisions independently from parser releases. Adding a representative case should normally leave the existing baseline intact; if the distribution changes materially, create a new reviewed baseline and explain the changed production mix. Never overwrite historical reports, because trend data shows whether reliability is improving or shifting between classes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose implementation options deliberately

Decision Option A Option B Choose based on
Assertion target Exact text comparison Structured-field comparison Use fields for business-critical values; use text for broad transcription coverage.
Metric CER WER Use CER for character and punctuation sensitivity; WER for token readability and boundaries.
CI cadence Smoke set on every pull request Full corpus on merge, nightly, or release Balance feedback speed against corpus runtime and change frequency.
Threshold scope Global limit Per-class limits Use per-class gates when document types have materially different risk or difficulty.
Fixture storage Inline test data External versioned corpus Inline data suits tiny tests; an external corpus scales better, preserves images, and supports independent review.

Most production parsers need a combination rather than a single option: exact structured assertions for high-risk fields, CER and WER for text, smoke tests for fast feedback, full-corpus gates for release confidence, and an external versioned corpus for traceability.

What “pass” and “fail” should mean at release time

A release passes only when all designated exact fields match, every gated class meets its CER and WER limits, the aggregate metrics stay within the approved baseline delta, and the report contains enough metadata and artifacts to reproduce the result. It fails when any critical field differs, any required class exceeds a threshold, or the run cannot establish which engine, model, preprocessing, and normalization configuration produced the output.

Tesseract’s official testing documentation notes that automated regression testing has additional requirements and that the project has no built-in performance-test suite. That makes the repository’s corpus, assertions, thresholds, and CI artifacts the authoritative performance contract for an OCR parser rather than an informal visual spot-check.
