A minimal Android launcher is more than a sparse home screen: it must qualify to handle the Home action, discover launchable apps, keep usage totals aligned to local days, and—if it blocks apps outside its own interface—observe foreground changes carefully. ReClaim founder Tal Aizikov’s October 1, 2026 account describes how the team approached those platform details in Kotlin. It is a team-reviewed implementation report, not independent testing or a guarantee that every Android device behaves identically.
How does an app become the default Android launcher?
An activity can declare itself as a Home-screen candidate, but that does not silently replace the user’s existing launcher. In ReClaim’s reported setup, the activity handles ACTION_MAIN with CATEGORY_HOME; its manifest also includes DEFAULT and LAUNCHER. The user still needs to select it as the default Home app.
For Android API 29 and later, the account describes requesting the Home role through RoleManager. Its fallback opens the system’s Home settings picker. The practical verification is to resolve the Home intent as well as check role state: ReClaim reports a bug in which the role appeared held even though preferred-activity resolution was stale, and Home could show a chooser after reboot or process death. Reselecting the launcher in system Home settings repaired that reported condition. These are the team’s implementation observations, not a claim that all devices share the same failure.

How can a launcher list installed apps?
ReClaim uses Android’s LauncherApps API to query launchable activities for the current user. It registers a callback for package additions, removals, changes, and availability changes, so the app list can respond when installed apps change. To open an item, the team calls startMainActivity and keeps a package launch-intent fallback.
Android 11 and later restrict which installed packages an app can see. ReClaim’s account says the launcher declares QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES for its core app-discovery function; that permission is reviewed by Google Play, so developers should not assume declaring it ensures approval. The account does not establish a universal approval outcome.

Make the app list fit the product goal
ReClaim’s interface makes a deliberate distinction: selected favorites keep colorful icons, while the full app drawer is an alphabetical, text-only list with search and an A–Z index. The team describes its goal as giving access to every installed app “without making distracting apps visually appealing.” That is a design rationale, not evidence of a measured change in usage.

ReClaim uses UsageStatsManager to show per-app totals and suggest apps to block based on a seven-day usage window. Access to usage data requires the user to grant the special PACKAGE_USAGE_STATS access in Settings. The account says the app checks the associated app-op rather than treating this as an ordinary runtime permission.

Handle local midnight deliberately
The team reports that daily aggregate usage buckets can include part of the previous day until rollover. That can make a total queried at local midnight inaccurate if the app treats the aggregate bucket as a finished calendar-day record. ReClaim’s described solution replays raw records from queryEvents() and sums foreground intervals for the requested day.
To avoid double counting when an app briefly moves between its own activities, the implementation tracks nested foreground transitions. It also adds time measured with SystemClock.elapsedRealtime() for the currently open session, which may not yet be represented reliably in historical usage data. These are the team’s reported techniques and edge cases, not independently verified results across devices.

How can a launcher block apps opened outside its own interface?
A check immediately before launching an app only covers launches initiated through the launcher. ReClaim describes an optional accessibility service for observing app switches elsewhere: it watches window-state changes, ignores System UI and ReClaim itself, debounces repeated events, then opens a full-screen block activity. The article gives 1,000 ms as the debounce interval in its implementation example. Its in-memory blocked-package set is refreshed from temporary and scheduled blocks.
A third-party app cannot force-stop another app’s process through this approach. Instead, ReClaim redirects the user to a block screen or Home. The account also notes a narrowly handled picture-in-picture bounds exception used to dismiss video left playing after a block.

Accessibility disclosure and policy limits
Accessibility access is sensitive. ReClaim’s described flow presents a disclosure before opening Accessibility settings: it explains that the app is not an accessibility tool, checks only foreground app identity, and does not read or send screen content. Google Play treats non-accessibility uses as policy-reviewed; the implementation description is not legal advice or a guarantee of approval.
What are the limits of the smaller platform shortcuts?
The account says the approach has no public API for expanding the notification shade. ReClaim describes attempting a hidden StatusBarManager method through reflection and tolerating failure. Hidden APIs can change across Android releases, so that technique should not be treated as a stable foundation for a product feature.
For phone and gallery shortcuts, the team describes resolving system intents. For web search it tries ACTION_WEB_SEARCH and falls back to opening a browser URL. These are useful examples of graceful fallback, but the post does not establish that every device provides matching handlers.

Tal Aizikov’s October 1, 2026 post says it was drafted with AI assistance and reviewed by the ReClaim team, and that its code excerpts are trimmed versions of real app code. It offers concrete implementation decisions: verify the Home intent rather than relying only on role state, use LauncherApps for discoverable activities, account for day boundaries in usage totals, and keep any accessibility monitoring narrowly scoped.
The product’s current site describes an Android launcher with no icons, widgets, or clutter and displays a Google Play download link: ReClaim’s official site. That is a newer availability signal than the October post, which said the app was not yet on Google Play at the time it was written. The site’s product positioning does not independently verify every implementation detail in the post, and neither source establishes measured reductions in screen time or other behavior-change outcomes.
