Mega Sableye needs different teammates depending on the battle. It is generally excluded from the GO Battle League, with exceptions for special event cups; in raids, it is better understood as a support Mega for allied Dark- and Ghost-type attackers than as a top raid damage dealer. If you are fighting Mega Sableye as a raid boss, bring strong Fairy attackers instead. Start by deciding which of those jobs you need your team to do: supporting a raid party, countering a boss, or entering a cup that specifically allows Mega Pokémon.
First, choose the battle mode
There is no single Mega Sableye lineup that works for every format. Before choosing teammates, decide whether you want to use Mega Sableye in a raid, fight it as a raid boss, or try it in a permitted event cup. Those are different jobs with different team-building priorities. In the first case, the question is whether its support benefit helps the group more than another attacker would. In the second, you are choosing counters to its Dark/Ghost typing. In the third, you must first check whether the cup allows Mega-Evolved Pokémon at all.
| Goal | Team-building priority | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Use Mega Sableye in a raid | Build around its support for allied Dark- and Ghost-type attackers, then weigh that benefit against bringing a stronger direct attacker. | The database does not rank Mega Sableye as a raid attacker. |
| Defeat Mega Sableye as a raid boss | Prioritize strong Fairy-type damage; Mega Gardevoir is one Mega option named by the counter guide. | The number of trainers needed depends on roster strength and execution. |
| Use Mega Sableye in PvP | Check the active event cup’s eligibility, CP limit, and species rules in game before planning a lineup. | Mega-Evolved Pokémon are not allowed in the GO Battle League except in special event cups. |
The general restriction and event-cup exception are described in the Pokémon GO Help Center’s Mega battle-use rules. Cup eligibility is time-sensitive, so do not assume Mega Sableye is usable in a cup simply because it has appeared in an earlier one.
It also helps to separate an individual Pokémon’s value from the value it brings to a party. A raid team is not automatically improved just because it contains a Mega; the relevant question is whether that Mega’s particular support role lines up with the other players’ attackers. Conversely, a counter team against Mega Sableye should be selected for the boss’s weakness, not for its ability to receive a boost from Sableye. Those distinctions prevent a common team-building mistake: treating one lineup as suitable both for using Mega Sableye and for defeating it.

What Pokémon are good with Mega Sableye in raids?
Mega Sableye’s raid value is primarily a team-support decision. The Mega Sableye database describes its Mega boost as useful for allied Dark- and Ghost-type Pokémon, two types that are often brought against Psychic raid bosses. That makes it a possible choice when your group is already relying on those attackers and the shared boost is worth more than the damage you could contribute with a direct attacker.
In practical terms, begin with the raid boss rather than with Sableye. Identify whether Dark- or Ghost-type attackers are already a sensible choice for that boss, then consider whether Sableye’s support will benefit enough of the party to justify using your Mega slot. If your teammates are mostly using other types, the described support niche may contribute less. If your own priority is maximizing your personal damage rather than helping the group’s Dark- and Ghost-type attackers, a stronger direct attacker may be the better fit. There is no universal answer without knowing the boss, the group’s roster, and what other players plan to bring.
Build around the boss and your group
- Check the raid boss’s weaknesses and your group’s planned attackers. Mega Sableye’s support niche is most relevant when teammates are using Dark- or Ghost-type damage against a Psychic boss. Do not assume those types are the right choice for every raid; the boss determines which attackers make sense.
- Compare support with direct damage. Ask whether boosting the team’s Dark and Ghost attackers helps more than using a stronger attacker yourself. The database does not rank Mega Sableye as a raid attacker, so do not treat its Mega status as proof that it is the best damage choice.
- Choose teammates for the raid, not just for type synergy with Sableye. Prioritize suitable high-damage attackers for the boss. The available information establishes the Dark/Ghost support role, but does not provide a simulation-backed lineup or a universal best party.
- Coordinate Mega use. Only one Mega-Evolved Pokémon can be active for a Trainer at a time. Coordinate with the group if another player’s Mega would better support the party. This is a per-Trainer limit, not a reason to assume everyone’s Mega slot has the same best use.
- Confirm your moves before the battle. The recommended Mega Sableye moveset in the database is Shadow Claw as the Fast Attack and Foul Play as the Charged Attack. Check that these are the attacks you intend to use rather than expecting Mega Evolution itself to change them.
The recommended Mega Sableye moveset in the database is Shadow Claw as the Fast Attack and Foul Play as the Charged Attack. These are its listed recommended moves, not a guarantee that it will outperform a direct attacker in a particular raid. The distinction matters: a recommended moveset tells you which attacks the database favors for Mega Sableye, while the raid decision still depends on whether bringing Sableye is more useful to the party than bringing another Pokémon.
Mega Evolution does not give a Pokémon a new Fast or Charged Attack. The Pokémon GO Help Center states: “Also, a Pokémon’s Fast and Charged Attacks don’t change when they’re Mega-Evolved.” Read the official Mega Evolution rules before changing a moveset or spending resources in expectation of a new attack. This keeps the planning sequence straightforward: choose the battle role, select the attacks you want for that role, and treat Mega Evolution as a form change with support implications rather than as a move replacement.
When Mega Sableye is the wrong raid choice
There are two reasons not to select it automatically. First, the database does not rank it as a raid attacker, so its value is not established as leading direct damage. Second, the support niche depends on what your party is actually using. If the raid plan does not center on Dark- and Ghost-type attackers, or another player is already providing a more useful Mega option, weigh that opportunity cost carefully. The sources do not establish a numeric damage threshold at which Sableye becomes preferable, so avoid treating this as a fixed rule or promising it will improve every raid.

A useful pre-lobby check is to ask: Is this a Psychic boss? Are Dark- or Ghost-type attackers part of the group’s plan? Would the party benefit from Sableye’s support more than from one more direct attacker? If you cannot answer those questions from the raid and the group, use the matchup and party composition to guide the choice instead of assuming Mega Sableye is always the best Mega to activate.
What counters Mega Sableye in raids?
If Mega Sableye is the raid boss, focus on Fairy-type attackers. The database lists Mega Sableye as Dark/Ghost and shows Fairy as its only listed weakness, dealing 160% damage. It also lists strong resistance to Normal and Psychic damage, so avoid building your counter plan around those types when stronger Fairy options are available. In other words, the clearest counter-building clue is the Fairy weakness; the resistance information is a useful warning against leaning on Normal or Psychic attacks.
Choose counters by damage and staying power
- Prioritize Fairy-type moves and attackers. Compare the Fairy options in your own roster by their move typing, level, and ability to stay in the fight. A counter recommendation is only useful if you have that Pokémon and can bring it at a level appropriate to your party.
- Consider a Mega option. The raid counter guide includes Mega Gardevoir among its recommended Mega choices. Whether it fits your party depends on your available Pokémon and the group’s plan. Treat it as an option named by the guide, not as a mandatory choice for every player.
- Account for the rest of the lobby. A teammate’s Mega may contribute a party boost, but each Trainer can have only one Mega-Evolved Pokémon active at a time. Coordinate rather than assuming every player can bring one.
- Do not rely on a fixed trainer count. Pokémon GO Hub’s guide, dated September 3, 2026, estimates that around two to five trainers with strong, high-level Pokémon can defeat Mega Sableye. Treat that as a guide estimate, not a guarantee: roster strength and execution affect the outcome.
- Compare your actual options. If you have several Fairy choices, consider their move typing, level, and survivability rather than copying an example lineup without checking your own roster. The guide’s estimate is specifically qualified by strong, high-level Pokémon; it does not mean every group of two will succeed.
For its specific counter recommendations and estimate, see the Mega Sableye raid counter guide. The estimate should not be read as a minimum for every group or as a promise that a lower-powered team will succeed. A group with weaker options or less reliable execution should not plan around the lowest trainer count in that range as if it were assured.
The counter task is different from using Sableye as a raid support Mega. Against the boss, build around Fairy damage because of the 160% weakness. When you are choosing Sableye for your own raid party, instead consider whether its boost helps allies using Dark- and Ghost-type attacks, often against Psychic bosses. Keep those two situations separate when preparing teams or coordinating a lobby.
Can you use Mega Sableye in the GO Battle League?
Usually, no. Mega-Evolved Pokémon are excluded from GO Battle League except during special event cups that allow them. The exception is cup-specific; verify that the current cup permits Mega-Evolved Pokémon, then check its CP cap and eligible species in game before investing in a team.

No current event cup or simulation-backed three-Pokémon lineup is established here. It would therefore be misleading to give a supposedly reliable team of three. If a cup does allow Mega Sableye, first confirm the exact rules, then assess its role against the eligible field and build the rest of the team to cover its vulnerabilities and matchups. The available matchup information lists Fairy as Mega Sableye’s weakness, but does not establish which partners perform best in a particular cup.

A sensible event-cup workflow is to check the cup name and rules in the game, verify that Mega-Evolved Pokémon are eligible, and then confirm the CP limit and species restrictions. Only after those checks should you decide whether Mega Sableye fits the format. A past cup’s rules are not proof that a later cup will admit it; event rules can differ, and participation should not be assumed from the Pokémon’s availability in other battles.
Do not confuse the GO Battle League restriction with every kind of Trainer Battle. The official rule identifies the GO Battle League limitation and special-cup exception; Mega Sableye can also be used in friend battles. Check the battle’s rules before assembling a team. That distinction matters if you are practicing with a friend: it does not mean Mega Sableye is generally legal in a ranked GO Battle League season.
What Mega Sableye’s typing means for team planning
Mega Sableye is Dark/Ghost. In the database matchup chart, Fairy is its only listed weakness, at 160% damage. The chart also identifies strong resistance to Normal and Psychic. These facts are useful in two distinct ways: they help explain what to send against Mega Sableye as a raid boss, and they inform matchup planning when the format permits Mega Sableye on your side.
Against Mega Sableye, the Fairy weakness is the actionable offensive point: give priority to Fairy attackers and their Fairy-type moves. The Normal and Psychic resistances are the corresponding caution. If a team has access to strong Fairy choices, building around Normal or Psychic damage ignores the clearest matchup advantage provided by the chart.

For a format in which Mega Sableye is on your side, the same typing information is a starting point for anticipating threats, not a complete team recipe. Fairy is the listed weakness; a team planner should account for that vulnerability, but the matchup chart alone does not identify the best partner species or guarantee a winning combination. Cup legality, CP limits, opposing Pokémon, and battle execution all remain relevant.
Do not treat those defensive matchups as a complete PvP strategy. Type effectiveness alone does not establish a winning lineup: cup eligibility, CP rules, opposing Pokémon, moves, and battle execution all matter. For raids, the clearest application supported by the matchup data is simpler: use Fairy attackers against Mega Sableye and consider Mega Sableye’s Dark/Ghost support niche when your group is fighting a Psychic boss.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where else Mega Sableye can be used
The official battle-use rules say Mega Pokémon can be used in Gym battles and receive attack boosts there. They cannot be left behind to defend a Gym. That makes Gym offense a separate use from raid support or event-cup PvP; do not plan on placing Mega Sableye in a Gym to hold it after your battle.
Mega Evolution also does not replace a Pokémon’s attacks, and only one Mega-Evolved Pokémon can be active for a Trainer at once. Those rules matter when coordinating a raid party or deciding whether your own Mega slot is better used for Sableye’s support role or another Mega option. The one-Mega limit is per Trainer, so a party can discuss who is using which Mega, but each individual should plan around their own active Mega choice.

A practical decision checklist
- Using Mega Sableye in a raid? Favor it when its boost benefits the group’s Dark- and Ghost-type attackers, especially against a Psychic raid boss; compare that support value with a direct attacker.
- Raiding against Mega Sableye? Make Fairy damage the priority, and evaluate your available counters by moves, level, and survivability.
- Considering PvP? Confirm that the current special event cup allows Mega Pokémon and check its rules in game before choosing a lineup.
- Planning a Gym battle? Mega Pokémon can be used in Gym battles, but cannot be assigned to defend the Gym afterward.
Use the checklist in order: identify the battle, verify what is allowed, then choose the role the Mega should play. For a raid with Sableye on your side, judge the benefit by the group’s Dark- and Ghost-type attackers and compare it with direct damage. For a raid against Sableye, build around Fairy-type damage. For PvP, do not settle on a team until the live cup rules confirm eligibility. This keeps the choice tied to the battle rather than to the word “Mega” alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Pokémon are good with Mega Sableye?
For raids, its support niche is most relevant alongside allied Dark- and Ghost-type attackers, often when the group is facing a Psychic raid boss. The Mega Sableye database recommends Shadow Claw and Foul Play. It does not rank Mega Sableye as a raid attacker, so weigh its party support against the direct damage another attacker could contribute.
What is Mega Sableye weak to in Pokémon GO?
The Mega Sableye matchup chart lists Fairy as its only weakness, dealing 160% damage. It also lists strong resistance to Normal and Psychic, so Fairy attackers are the clearest choice when building a raid counter team.
Can you use Mega Sableye in the GO Battle League?
Generally, no. Mega-Evolved Pokémon are excluded from GO Battle League except in special event cups that allow them. Check the current cup’s Mega eligibility, CP limit, and species rules in game. Mega Sableye can also be used in friend battles.

Prioritize strong Fairy attackers and compare your options by move typing, level, and survivability. The raid counter guide includes Mega Gardevoir among its recommended Mega choices. Its estimate of around two to five trainers assumes strong, high-level Pokémon and is not a guarantee.
Does Mega Evolution change Sableye’s moves?
No. The Pokémon GO Help Center says a Pokémon’s Fast and Charged Attacks do not change when it Mega-Evolves. The database’s recommended Mega Sableye moveset is Shadow Claw and Foul Play.
Can Mega Sableye defend a Gym?
No. Official battle-use rules allow Mega Pokémon in Gym battles and say they receive attack boosts, but Mega Pokémon cannot be left to defend a Gym.
The Bottom Line
Build around the battle, not around one all-purpose lineup. Mega Sableye is a conditional raid-support choice for groups using Dark- and Ghost-type attackers, rather than a top-ranked raid attacker; Mega Sableye as a raid boss calls for strong Fairy damage. In the GO Battle League, use it only if the current special event cup explicitly allows Mega Pokémon, and verify that cup’s rules before assembling a team.
