You can build a Matter device on an ESP32-C6 by installing a compatible ESP-IDF toolchain, adding ESP-Matter, selecting a Matter example, setting the target to esp32c6, building and flashing the firmware, and commissioning the board with a Matter controller. The ESP32-C6 is suitable for either Wi-Fi Matter or Thread Matter because it combines Wi-Fi with an IEEE 802.15.4 radio. The exact firmware behavior depends on the Matter device type and data model you choose.

What you are building

Matter is an application-layer standard for connected-home and building devices. A Matter device exposes a defined data model: endpoints contain clusters, and clusters contain the attributes and commands that describe functions such as lighting, switching, sensing, or another standard device type. ESP-Matter is Espressif’s Matter development framework for ESP32 devices, integrated with ESP-IDF.

This guide uses the ESP32-C6 because its radio hardware supports two Matter transport choices. Espressif states that the chip supports both Wi-Fi and IEEE 802.15.4, allowing Wi-Fi or Thread Matter examples to run on it. Wi-Fi and Thread are different network paths, not two names for the same configuration. Your choice affects commissioning, network infrastructure, power expectations, and the example you should select.

The tutorial does not assume a particular product such as a lamp or sensor. That is intentional: the product function determines the endpoints, clusters, commands, and hardware behavior. You will first prove the development workflow with a documented ESP-Matter example, then replace or extend that example with the data model for your product.

Hardware prerequisites

Choose a supported ESP32-C6 board

Espressif’s setup guidance names the ESP32-C6-DevKitC-1 and ESP32-C6-DevKitM-1 as development-board options. Select the exact board before ordering accessories or following pin-specific instructions. Different board connectors and revisions can change the cable and physical connection you need.

  • An ESP32-C6 development board, such as the ESP32-C6-DevKitC-1 or ESP32-C6-DevKitM-1.
  • A USB data cable that matches the connector on the selected board. Espressif specifically cautions that connector choice is board-dependent.
  • A host computer on which you can install the ESP-IDF toolchain and ESP-Matter environment, or run Espressif’s Docker image.
  • A Matter network and commissioner for the final onboarding test. Wi-Fi commissioning needs the intended Wi-Fi network; Thread commissioning needs a suitable Thread setup and operational dataset.

A charging-only cable will not provide the reliable serial and data connection required for development. Confirm that the cable supports data transfer and that the board appears as a serial device after it is connected. The exact serial-port name varies by operating system and board connection.

Prepare the ESP-IDF development environment

What ESP-IDF provides

ESP-IDF is the underlying Espressif development framework. Its setup includes the RISC-V toolchain used by the ESP32-C6, CMake and Ninja build utilities, and the ESP-IDF libraries and scripts. The normal project workflow separates installation from project development: install the tools first, then create or open a project, configure the target, build, flash, and monitor it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the ESP-IDF release and ESP-Matter release that the example documentation supports together. “Latest” documentation can change as Espressif publishes new releases, so pin a release when you need a repeatable build. Recheck the release notes, supported board revisions, setup instructions, and container tag before sharing a tutorial with a team or using it in production.

Supported host approaches

ESP-Matter documentation describes native host setup for Linux and macOS, and Windows development through WSL. It also offers an official Docker image. Choose one approach for a project rather than mixing pieces from several environments.

Approach What it provides When it fits
Native host installation Direct control of the ESP-IDF and ESP-Matter installation on Linux or macOS; Windows users can use WSL. Useful when you want normal host integration, local source editing, and direct management of tool versions.
Espressif Docker image A prebuilt environment containing ESP-IDF, ESP-Matter, and host tools including chip-tool and chip-cert. Useful when you want a packaged, repeatable environment and do not want to install every dependency directly on the host.

On Windows, WSL is the documented host route for the ESP-Matter development environment. USB and serial-device access still need to be configured so the Linux environment can reach the connected board. With Docker, pass through the board’s serial device and any network access required by your commissioning test; a container that cannot see the board cannot flash it.

Choose how to add ESP-Matter

There are two documented ways to bring ESP-Matter into an application. The right choice depends on whether you need only the framework or the complete development and Matter-host tooling.

ESP-Matter option Characteristics Best fit
ESP-Matter component A lighter application dependency setup. An application team that already has an ESP-IDF project and wants to add Matter without taking the full repository workflow.
Full ESP-Matter repository Includes Matter examples and host tools used for broader development, commissioning, certification, and data-model work. Learning the framework, running the supplied examples, testing commissioning, or developing a product that needs the repository’s utilities.

The full repository is generally the clearer starting point for this first build because it supplies examples and the host-side tools used in development. The component route can be preferable when the application already has an established ESP-IDF structure and only needs the Matter component. Follow the installation instructions for the release you selected; paths and dependency details can change between releases.

Pick an example that matches your first test

ESP-Matter documentation includes examples such as Light and Light Switch. Select one whose device behavior you can verify with the controller you plan to use. A light example demonstrates an on/off-style product model; a switch example demonstrates control behavior. Do not infer a product’s exact cluster commands from the word “Matter” alone. Read the selected example’s data-model and hardware notes before changing code.

For a first build, keep the example close to its documented form. Change one variable at a time: first prove that the unmodified firmware builds and flashes, then confirm commissioning, and only then change endpoints, clusters, or application behavior. This isolates environment problems from product-code problems.

Set the ESP32-C6 target and build the firmware

1. Open the ESP-Matter example in the prepared environment

Start the shell or container in which ESP-IDF and ESP-Matter are installed. Change to the selected example directory using the repository’s documented path. Use the example’s own README for any release-specific prerequisites or configuration options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Select the chip target

Run the target-selection command from the ESP-Matter guide:

idf.py set-target esp32c6

This configures the project for the ESP32-C6 rather than another ESP32 family target. If the project was previously configured for a different target, selecting esp32c6 ensures that generated configuration and build outputs are aligned with the board you are holding.

3. Review project configuration

Use the example’s documented configuration method to check network, commissioning, logging, and application settings before compiling. The exact menu entries and defaults depend on the ESP-Matter release and the chosen example. Keep a record of any changes so you can reproduce a successful build.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

4. Compile the project

Build with the standard ESP-IDF command:

idf.py build

ESP-IDF compiles the application and its components and produces the bootloader, partition table, and application binaries. A successful build confirms that the selected ESP-IDF, ESP-Matter, target, and example are mutually usable; it does not yet prove that the board is connected or that commissioning will work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Flash the board

Connect the selected ESP32-C6 board with the verified USB data cable, identify its serial port, and run the flash action documented by the ESP-Matter example for your operating system and release. Use the correct port if more than one serial device is attached. Do not assume that a port name, board connector, or flash command is identical across operating systems.

Flashing writes the generated bootloader, partition table, and application to the board. If the flash operation cannot open the port, check cable data capability, board power, permissions, the selected port, and whether another terminal program has the port open. If flashing succeeds but the application does not start, erase or reconfigure the project only according to the example’s recovery instructions; indiscriminately changing partitions can hide the original problem.

6. Monitor startup output

Start the ESP-IDF monitor using the example’s documented command and serial settings. Look for boot output, Matter initialization, and the commissioning information printed by the application. Save this log when troubleshooting because it connects a controller-side error with the device state at the time of the attempt.

Commission the device into Matter

Flashing is only half of the test. Commissioning gives the device operational credentials and, for a networked transport, connects it to the fabric and network. ESP-Matter documents a host-based chip-tool commissioner as well as manual-code and QR-code onboarding. Espressif also identifies its RainMaker mobile applications as commissioning and control options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Host-based commissioning with chip-tool

The full ESP-Matter environment and the official Docker image include chip-tool. It is useful for repeatable development tests because the commissioner runs on the host rather than requiring a phone interface. Use the commands and arguments documented for the exact example and release. The device’s node identifier, endpoint, discriminator, setup code, and transport-specific options must match the values produced by that firmware.

Keep the host and board on the networks required by the chosen flow. A host tool can be installed correctly and still fail if the board is not advertising over the expected transport, the Bluetooth path is unavailable, or the Thread network data is missing.

BLE-to-Wi-Fi commissioning

For a Wi-Fi Matter example, the commissioner can use Bluetooth Low Energy to transfer onboarding information and Wi-Fi credentials to the device. The board must be running the Wi-Fi-capable example and be discoverable in its commissioning window. Supply the intended Wi-Fi network credentials through the documented commissioner flow, then verify that the device reaches the operational network.

BLE-to-Thread commissioning

For a Thread Matter example, BLE is used for onboarding while the device receives the Thread network information needed to become operational. The commissioning setup must include the appropriate Thread operational dataset. Without valid Thread network data and a Thread infrastructure capable of routing the device, pairing cannot complete even if the firmware and Bluetooth connection are functioning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manual setup codes and QR onboarding

Matter supports manual pairing codes and QR-code onboarding. Use the setup code printed or reported by the selected example, not a code copied from another board. A QR flow is convenient with a phone-based controller; manual codes are useful when testing from a terminal or when a camera-based flow is unavailable. The code must correspond to the device’s current commissioning state.

Verify the commissioned endpoint

After pairing, use the controller supported by your workflow to read or operate the endpoint exposed by the example. Verify the behavior the example actually implements: for a light, that the documented light control works; for a switch, that its control action reaches the intended endpoint. Capture both the controller result and the device monitor log. This confirms not only that onboarding succeeded but also that the application data model and hardware behavior are connected.

Wi-Fi or Thread: how to choose

Choice What the ESP32-C6 contributes Additional setup concern
Wi-Fi Matter Uses the ESP32-C6 Wi-Fi radio and a Wi-Fi Matter example. The commissioner must transfer valid Wi-Fi credentials, and the device must reach the intended Wi-Fi network.
Thread Matter Uses the ESP32-C6 IEEE 802.15.4 radio and a Thread Matter example. The commissioner needs the appropriate Thread operational dataset and a functioning Thread infrastructure.

Neither transport is universally better. Wi-Fi can fit products that already depend on a household or building Wi-Fi network. Thread can fit a low-power mesh design, but it requires Thread infrastructure and a commissioning path that supplies the operational dataset. Choose based on the product’s network and power requirements, then use the matching ESP-Matter example and commissioning instructions.

Define the Matter data model before product customization

Once the stock example works, define what your product is. Espressif recommends beginning product development by defining the Matter data model and notes that standard Matter device types are available. This decision determines the endpoint layout, clusters, attributes, commands, commissioning behavior, and controller expectations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with a standard device type

Identify the closest standard Matter device type for the physical product. Reusing a standard type gives controllers a known interpretation of the endpoint and its clusters. If the product combines several functions, determine whether it needs multiple endpoints or another documented composition rather than placing unrelated behavior into one endpoint.

Map clusters to hardware behavior

For every cluster you include, decide how its attributes and commands map to the board’s hardware and application state. A command that changes a logical on/off attribute must also update the output or actuator that the user expects. Conversely, a physical input must update the data model so a controller can observe the change. The selected example’s implementation is the reference for the behavior you are extending.

Keep commissioning separate from product logic

Do not treat a successful pairing as proof that the product model is correct. Commissioning verifies credentials and fabric membership; endpoint reads and commands verify the application model. Test both phases independently and record which endpoint and cluster each verification exercises.

Choose a development and commissioning workflow

Workflow choice Strength Trade-off
Native ESP-IDF and ESP-Matter host setup Direct integration with local files, serial devices, and build tools. You manage tool and release compatibility on the host.
Official Docker image Packages ESP-IDF, ESP-Matter, chip-tool, and chip-cert in one environment. You must configure serial-device and network access for the container.
ESP-Matter component Lighter dependency setup for an existing ESP-IDF application. It does not provide the full repository’s examples and broader host-tool workflow by itself.
Full ESP-Matter repository Examples plus utilities for development, commissioning, certification, and data-model work. The repository workflow is larger than adding only a component.
Host chip-tool Scriptable, repeatable commissioning and command testing. Requires correct host installation, transport access, and example-specific arguments.
Phone or RainMaker application Visual commissioning and control that resembles an end-user flow. Results depend on the supported mobile application and its network permissions.

Troubleshoot the failure point

The project will not configure for ESP32-C6

  • Confirm that the project is an ESP-Matter example supported by the installed release.
  • Run idf.py set-target esp32c6 from the project directory.
  • Check that the ESP-IDF and ESP-Matter versions are a documented combination rather than mixing a newly installed framework with an older example.

The build fails

  • Verify that the RISC-V toolchain, CMake, Ninja, and ESP-IDF scripts are installed in the environment where the build is running.
  • Read the first dependency or configuration error, not only the final compiler message.
  • Return to the unmodified example and run idf.py build before debugging product changes.

The board cannot be flashed

  • Use a data-capable USB cable that matches the selected board’s connector.
  • Check board power, serial-port selection, operating-system permissions, and whether another application has opened the port.
  • Make sure the flash action is being run from the same example and target that produced the binaries.

Commissioning cannot discover the device

  • Confirm that the application is still in its commissioning window and that the monitor shows the expected startup state.
  • For BLE onboarding, check Bluetooth access on the host or phone and keep the board within reliable radio range.
  • For Wi-Fi, verify the network credentials and that the access point is reachable from the intended location.
  • For Thread, provide the correct operational dataset and verify that Thread infrastructure is available.

Commissioning succeeds but commands do not work

  • Confirm the endpoint identifier and cluster command against the selected example’s data model.
  • Check that the hardware output is connected to the GPIO or peripheral expected by that board and example.
  • Compare controller-side actions with the serial monitor to determine whether the command reached the device or failed in application logic.

Make the build reproducible

Record the ESP-IDF release, ESP-Matter release or repository revision, host method, selected board, target command, example name, configuration changes, and commissioner used. Pin the Docker image tag if you use Docker. Keep the exact setup-code source and Thread operational dataset handling documented for development devices; do not treat a temporary test credential as a production provisioning strategy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before distributing the instructions, retest them against the release and board revision you name. Espressif’s latest pages and release tags are mutable, and setup details can change. A reproducible guide is one that states the environment and does not silently rely on whichever “latest” dependency happens to be installed.

From example to product

  1. Select the physical ESP32-C6 board and matching USB data cable.
  2. Install ESP-IDF and its RISC-V, CMake, Ninja, library, and script dependencies, or use the official Docker image.
  3. Install ESP-Matter as a component or use the full repository, depending on whether you need the examples and host utilities.
  4. Choose a Light, Light Switch, or another example that matches the first behavior you want to prove.
  5. Run idf.py set-target esp32c6, review the example configuration, and run idf.py build.
  6. Flash the generated binaries using the example’s documented procedure and monitor startup output.
  7. Commission over Wi-Fi or Thread with chip-tool, a supported phone controller, or a RainMaker mobile application.
  8. Verify the endpoint behavior, then define the product’s standard Matter device type, endpoints, clusters, and hardware mapping.
  9. Repeat build, flash, commissioning, and endpoint tests after each product-model change.

This sequence keeps the variables separate: hardware connection, toolchain, target selection, firmware generation, radio onboarding, and application data model. That separation is what makes an ESP32-C6 Matter prototype diagnosable instead of a collection of unexplained build and pairing failures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an ESP32-C6 run Matter over Thread?

Yes. The ESP32-C6 includes an IEEE 802.15.4 radio, and Espressif documents Thread Matter examples for the chip. Thread commissioning also requires suitable Thread infrastructure and an operational dataset.

Do I need the full ESP-Matter repository?

Not always. The ESP-Matter component is the lighter route for an existing ESP-IDF application. Use the full repository when you need its examples and host tools such as chip-tool and chip-cert.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which USB cable should I buy?

Choose a USB data cable that matches the connector on the exact ESP32-C6 board you selected. Connector choice is board-dependent, so fix the board model and revision first.
