Build a landing page around one visitor, one clear promise and one primary action. Start by matching the page to what brought people there; then write and structure its content, make the action easy to complete, and check accessibility, performance and search readiness before launch.

Start with the visitor, entry point and goal

Before choosing a layout, identify who the page is for, what they expect to find and what you want them to do. A landing page might invite a visitor to request information, sign up or take another specific step. Give the page one primary action and make it easy to recognize.

If visitors arrive from an ad, align the page with the ad’s keywords, promise and call to action. Google Ads guidance recommends making important information easy to find, keeping mobile navigation simple and providing useful, unique content that helps visitors reach the action they came for: Google Ads landing page guidance.

Write the content before polishing the design

Make the offer clear

Use a descriptive headline that states what the page offers. Follow it with concise supporting copy explaining the details a visitor needs to decide whether the next step is relevant. Use familiar language and make the connection between the promise and the action explicit.

Organize details for scanning

Break longer content into sections with headings that describe what follows. Keep interface text direct, and write link text so readers can understand its purpose without relying on surrounding copy. These practices align with GOV.UK guidance on writing for interfaces.

Include the information necessary for this audience and offer; there is no universal content template. Avoid adding secondary material that distracts from the page’s main purpose.

Build a clear, mobile-friendly visual hierarchy

Arrange the headline, supporting information and primary action so visitors can locate them quickly. Keep navigation straightforward and avoid clutter that competes with the task. Design for both desktop and mobile rather than treating the mobile page as an afterthought.

Google’s page-experience guidance covers mobile display, secure delivery, intrusive interstitials and making main content easy to distinguish. For paid traffic, Google Ads also emphasizes quick mobile experiences, simple navigation and prominent information in its landing page guidance.

Make the primary action easy to complete

Keep the route from the page’s promise to its intended action apparent. The call to action should match what the visitor was told to expect, and secondary navigation or content should not obscure it. Choose form length and button treatment for the offer and audience: there is no established universal rule that a particular form length or button style will work best.

Make accessibility part of the build

Use meaningful headings and links, accessible styles and components, and test the page with assistive technology. Accessibility should be considered when creating, updating or managing a service; see GOV.UK accessibility guidance and its guidance on testing with assistive technologies.

Check performance before launch

Core Web Vitals measure loading performance, responsiveness and visual stability. Google’s current good-experience targets are:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): within 2.5 seconds.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): less than 200 milliseconds.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): less than 0.1.

These are recommended targets, not a guarantee of high rankings or a prediction of conversion results. See Google’s Core Web Vitals guidance and its page-experience overview.

Make the page ready for search

Use useful, specific content and metadata

Write for people first. Use the words your audience searches for in prominent, relevant places, such as the page title and main heading, without stuffing in keywords. Google’s Search Essentials describe practices for creating content and making a site accessible to search systems; following them does not guarantee that a page will be crawled, indexed or shown in results.

Give the page a unique, concise title that accurately describes it. Google can draw a search-result title link from several sources, so the HTML title guides its systems but does not control the displayed wording absolutely. Avoid boilerplate titles. See Google’s title-link guidance.

Write a succinct meta description that accurately summarizes the page, but keep the important promise in visible page content. Search snippets usually come from page content; Google may sometimes use the meta description instead. See Google’s snippet guidance.

Check crawlability and rendering

Use actual crawlable links to connect the page with relevant site content. Google can generally parse an <a> element with an href attribute and uses links to discover pages and understand relevance; see guidance on crawlable links.

If the page relies on JavaScript, check how the rendered page appears to search systems as well as to visitors. Google’s JavaScript SEO guidance describes rendering differences and limitations, alongside recommendations for secure, fast, accessible sites that work across devices.

Review the page after launch

Use the analytics and search data available to you to find friction and decide what to improve. Google points site owners to Search Console reports and Lighthouse for assessing page experience in its page-experience guidance. Treat results as evidence about your page and its audience, not as proof of a universal conversion formula: the official guidance does not establish a typical conversion rate or guaranteed lift from a particular layout, headline or call to action.
