To make a procedural fly swarm in Blender, build or obtain a fly model, add materials, animate the insect, then use Geometry Nodes to place and control instances. Artist ibotpl’s ready-made Fly Swarm generator offers a faster route: an 80 Level feature describes it as a package with a full scene and compositing settings, rather than a step-by-step node tutorial.
What ibotpl’s Blender fly swarm generator includes
80 Level’s October 6, 2026 feature describes ibotpl’s Gumroad generator as a tool for creating swarms of flies or other insects. The package is described as including the full scene, models, textures, camera, lighting, and compositing settings. The feature states: “The generator is compatible with Blender 4.5 and above, with the compositing settings optimized for Blender 5.2.” See the 80 Level feature for the artist’s presentation and listing link; check the current product listing for compatibility and availability, as these can change.
The feature does not publish a complete node-by-node walkthrough. It does not establish the generator’s precise Geometry Nodes graph, parameters, model construction, or animation settings, so those details should not be assumed from the package description.

How to build a fly swarm procedurally
A separate tutorial by Ryan King Art organizes a fly-swarm workflow into modeling, materials, animation, and Geometry Nodes. Its indexed description marks the stages as bug generator (0:16), modeling the fly (1:16), fly material (10:16), fly animation (17:30), and Geometry Nodes (23:27). These are useful workflow signposts, not evidence of ibotpl’s specific setup. The tutorial is titled “Create Swarms of Flies with Geometry Nodes (Blender Tutorial)” and was indexed as published May 10, 2026.

1. Create or choose the insect
Start with a fly model, either made for the project or obtained from another source. Keep the model’s scale and origin consistent so instances can be placed and oriented predictably. The indexed tutorial lists fly modeling as an early stage, but does not provide enough accessible detail to prescribe a particular mesh design.
2. Assign materials
Set up the insect’s materials before distributing it. This lets you judge how the model reads at the intended camera distance and under the scene lighting. Ryan King Art’s indexed segment list treats fly material as its own stage; it does not specify material settings for ibotpl’s generator.

3. Animate the insect
Give the fly an animation or motion treatment before using it as an instance. For a convincing swarm, the individual insects need visible motion as well as changing positions across the scene. The indexed tutorial separates fly animation from the later Geometry Nodes section; it does not identify the featured generator’s animation method or values.
4. Distribute and control instances
Geometry Nodes can distribute points or instances over a mesh surface. Blender 5.1’s manual documents Scatter on Surface, including density and distribution controls such as randomization and Poisson disk sampling. A surface can therefore act as a placement source, but the available information does not show that ibotpl uses this specific node.

For a swarm that moves over time, Blender’s Simulation Zones documentation explains how Geometry Nodes can create custom physics simulations. Baked simulation data is stored according to the project file’s save location, which matters when saving or sharing a project. This is general production guidance, not a description of the featured generator’s implementation.

Blender’s developer documentation discusses node-based particle-system work as a proposal for a more flexible system, including particle types, behaviors, event handling, and actions. Legacy boids are a separate concept from a Geometry Nodes workflow. The Blender 4.3 manual says boids try to reach goal objects and flee predators according to Boid Brain settings: Blender 4.3 boids documentation. That version-specific reference should not be taken as an explanation of ibotpl’s generator.
