A fast WordPress deployment gives each layer one job: Nginx handles connections and static files, one page-cache layer (Nginx FastCGI cache or Varnish) serves safe anonymous HTML, and Memcached stores reusable WordPress objects below that page cache. Put a database and PHP-FPM behind the caches, bypass personalized or state-changing requests, purge pages whenever content changes, and measure hit rates and origin load. The result is usually faster and more consistent than letting every request execute PHP, but there is no universal speed multiplier for this exact combination.
What each component does
The stack is a hierarchy, not three interchangeable “speed switches.” A request should be answered at the cheapest safe layer. A browser or CDN may satisfy a request first, then a full-page cache, static-file handling, PHP opcode cache, Memcached, and finally PHP application code and the database.

| Layer | Primary job | What it stores | What it must not decide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nginx | Accepts connections, serves static assets, routes requests to PHP-FPM, and can provide FastCGI or proxy caching. | Files and, when enabled, complete FastCGI responses. | Whether personalized WordPress output is safe for another visitor without explicit rules. |
| Varnish | Reverse proxy in front of the application; VCL controls eligibility, headers, purges, and monitoring. | HTTP responses, commonly anonymous HTML pages. | WordPress object data or user-specific sessions unless VCL deliberately handles them. |
| Memcached | Distributed in-memory object cache that reduces repeated database and PHP work. | Expensive query results, options, transients, and other cacheable objects. | Whether a complete page can be shown to every visitor. |
| PHP-FPM and WordPress | Generates dynamic responses and runs plugins, themes, authentication, and writes. | Application state and uncached work. | Assuming a cache hit is always valid after content changes. |
| Database | Durable source of WordPress content and configuration. | Posts, users, options, metadata, and plugin data. | Serving high-volume anonymous HTML directly when a safe page cache exists. |
Memcached belongs below full-page caching because an object hit still requires PHP to assemble a response. A page-cache hit can avoid PHP and database work altogether. The WordPress Hosting Handbook describes caching as reusing previously computed results instead of calculating them for every page view; the practical benefit depends on storage medium, network distance, and I/O latency.
Choose a clear page-cache ownership model
Nginx FastCGI cache and Varnish can both cache complete pages. Running both without a defined owner creates ambiguous purges, stale content, and difficult diagnostics. Choose one of these models:

Model A: Nginx owns full-page caching
Nginx sends PHP requests to PHP-FPM and stores eligible responses with fastcgi_cache. This is the simpler topology when you already operate Nginx and do not need VCL’s programmable request and response handling. Memcached remains the object cache inside WordPress.
Model B: Varnish owns full-page caching
Varnish sits in front of Nginx. Varnish serves cache hits; misses pass to Nginx, which serves static files or forwards dynamic requests to PHP-FPM. Nginx does not also cache complete HTML unless you have a specific reason and a tested purge design. VCL becomes the authoritative place for cache eligibility, cookie treatment, headers, and invalidation.

Using Varnish and Nginx FastCGI cache together is possible, but each layer needs a distinct scope, key, and purge path. For example, one might cache only a narrowly defined internal response while the other owns public HTML. If you cannot explain which layer should answer a URL and how a publish event invalidates both, do not stack them.
Plan the request path before changing production
Draw the path for every important URL class. A typical arrangement is:
- Browser or optional CDN.
- Varnish, if selected as the page-cache owner.
- Nginx for TLS termination, static files, and routing.
- Static-file cache or filesystem.
- PHP opcode cache, where available in the host environment.
- PHP-FPM and WordPress.
- Memcached for object and transient lookups.
- Database and fragment work on a miss.
Write down which layer owns each cache key, how long it may serve stale content, and how a WordPress update triggers invalidation. The exact Linux distribution, package versions, PHP-FPM pool sizing, TLS arrangement, and database settings depend on your host; the patterns below are not copy-and-paste production defaults.
Prerequisites
- A working WordPress site with a repeatable deployment or staging environment.
- Nginx already routing PHP requests through PHP-FPM.
- Permission to configure the chosen cache service and inspect response headers and logs.
- A WordPress object-cache integration that supports Memcached and fails safely if Memcached is unavailable.
- A purge mechanism that can be called when posts, terms, menus, widgets, or settings change.
- A test account for an anonymous visitor and another for a logged-in user.
Configure Memcached as the object cache
Memcached should hold data that WordPress can recompute: query results, options, and transients are common examples. It should not be treated as durable storage. If the daemon restarts or evicts entries, WordPress must continue by querying the database.

Keep Memcached private and bounded
Bind the service to a private interface or local socket as supported by your host, restrict access with the host firewall, and allocate a deliberate memory limit. Do not expose an unauthenticated Memcached listener to the public internet. Eviction is normal; an eviction means a miss, not data loss, provided the integration uses Memcached only as a cache.
Install the WordPress integration and verify behavior
- Install an object-cache drop-in or host-provided integration that explicitly supports Memcached.
- Enable it in the staging site first and confirm that normal page requests still work when the daemon is stopped.
- Exercise pages that query posts, taxonomies, and options, then inspect the integration’s hit and miss counters if available.
- Ensure cache keys include the site or environment namespace when multiple WordPress installations share one daemon.
- Set eviction and restart monitoring; a sudden miss spike should be visible without producing application errors.
Memcached does not make an unsafe page safe to cache. A logged-in response assembled from cached objects can still contain private data, so page-cache bypass rules remain mandatory.
Configure Nginx FastCGI caching (when Nginx is the owner)
The WordPress Nginx handbook documents a cache path, a key, stale behavior, and bypass conditions. Adapt those patterns to your filesystem, PHP socket, host limits, and URL scheme. The following is an illustrative shape rather than a universal production configuration:
fastcgi_cache_path /var/cache/nginx/wordpress levels=1:2 keys_zone=WORDPRESS:100m inactive=60m use_temp_path=off;
# In the server or location handling PHP:
fastcgi_cache WORDPRESS;
fastcgi_cache_key "$scheme$request_method$host$request_uri";
fastcgi_cache_valid 200 60m;
fastcgi_cache_use_stale error timeout updating http_500 http_503;
fastcgi_cache_bypass $skip_cache;
fastcgi_no_cache $skip_cache;
The illustrative fastcgi_cache_valid 200 60m value is an example policy documented by WordPress, not a recommendation for every site. A news site, store, membership site, and brochure site need different freshness windows. Test whether your key should include the host, scheme, query string, or another variation; changing a key without a matching purge strategy creates apparently “uncacheable” content.
Define bypass variables before the PHP location
Set a bypass variable from request method, URI, query string, and cookies. A conceptual pattern is:
set $skip_cache 0;
if ($request_method = POST) { set $skip_cache 1; }
if ($query_string != "") { set $skip_cache 1; }
if ($request_uri ~* "/wp-admin/|/wp-login.php|/wp-register.php|/xmlrpc.php") { set $skip_cache 1; }
if ($http_cookie ~* "wordpress_logged_in|comment_author|wp-postpass") { set $skip_cache 1; }
Use your own tested map or include files where possible; broad regular expressions can create false positives, and Nginx directive interactions vary by configuration. Query strings should bypass when the application changes output by parameter. If analytics parameters are ignored by the application, normalize them deliberately rather than caching every variant.

Pass cache status for observability
Add a response header such as X-Cache-Status with values like HIT, MISS, BYPASS, or STALE in a non-public diagnostic environment, or expose equivalent information in logs. Never let a diagnostic header reveal cookies, authorization data, or internal topology.
Put Varnish in front when you need VCL control
Varnish is a reverse proxy whose VCL determines how requests are received, hashed, fetched, delivered, and purged. WordPress guidance highlights its ability to serve pre-built pages without executing the Apache, PHP, and WordPress stack. In an Nginx deployment, Varnish normally listens on the public HTTP port while Nginx listens on an internal address or alternate port.
VCL decisions to make
- Which methods are cacheable. Safe anonymous
GETandHEADrequests are the usual starting point; state-changing methods bypass. - Which paths bypass: administration, login and registration, XML-RPC, feeds, and any endpoint with user-specific output.
- Which cookies force a pass, including logged-in, recent-commenter, and password-protection cookies.
- How query strings affect the hash. Keep parameters that change content; remove only parameters proven irrelevant.
- How origin cache-control and
Set-Cookieheaders are honored or deliberately rewritten. - How purges are authenticated and restricted to trusted callers.
- Whether stale content may be delivered during an origin error or refresh, and for how long.
Do not strip Set-Cookie or ignore an origin’s private-cache instruction simply to increase the hit rate. A high hit rate that serves one visitor’s account page to another is a security incident.
Requests that must bypass page caching
Bypass rules are the safety boundary. Start with these classes, then add plugin-specific endpoints after inspecting their behavior:
| Request or condition | Reason to bypass | Typical handling |
|---|---|---|
POST, PUT, PATCH, or DELETE |
They submit data or change state. | Pass to WordPress; never store the response as a public page. |
| Logged-in or authenticated cookie | Output can include private account, role, cart, or membership data. | Pass, or use a separately designed private cache. |
/wp-admin/, login, and registration |
Administrative and authentication screens are personalized. | Pass and preserve cookies. |
| XML-RPC and API-like endpoints | They commonly perform writes or return caller-specific data. | Pass unless an endpoint’s contract has been explicitly reviewed. |
| Feeds and sitemaps | They have freshness and generation rules that may differ from page HTML. | Cache only with an intentional, tested freshness policy. |
| Query-string requests | Parameters may select products, searches, experiments, or user-specific output. | Bypass by default; normalize only known-safe parameters. |
| Recent-commenter or password-protection cookie | WordPress may vary the response for that visitor. | Pass or isolate the response from the public cache. |
Review plugin documentation and actual response headers for checkout, account, search, preview, and form endpoints. A URL that looks public can still set a cookie or embed a nonce. Test anonymously and while logged in before marking it cacheable.
Purge and invalidate on every content change
A page cache is useful only while its entries are valid. Publishing or editing a post can affect the post URL, home page, category and tag archives, author pages, feeds, navigation, related-post blocks, and XML sitemaps. Your invalidation design must cover those dependencies.

- Choose one purge authority: a WordPress hook, deployment job, or controlled API caller.
- Define the affected URL set for each content event instead of purging an arbitrary subset.
- Send the purge to the actual page-cache owner. If two layers cache HTML, invalidate both in a known order.
- Confirm the purge response and record failures for retry.
- After purging, request representative URLs and verify a MISS followed by a HIT with the new content.
Full-cache flushes are a recovery tool, not a routine publishing strategy. They create an origin stampede when many visitors refill the cache simultaneously. Use targeted invalidation where practical and consider stale-while-revalidate behavior only after verifying that stale content is acceptable for the site.
Compare Nginx FastCGI cache with Varnish
| Decision axis | Nginx FastCGI cache | Varnish |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | Inside the Nginx-to-PHP request path. | Reverse proxy in front of Nginx and the application. |
| Configuration language | Nginx directives, maps, and location rules. | VCL for receive, hash, fetch, deliver, and purge behavior. |
| Purge control | File or zone invalidation mechanisms plus WordPress integration. | Explicit purge and ban logic through VCL and a protected endpoint. |
| Observability | Nginx logs, cache-status headers, and upstream timings. | VCL-selected headers, proxy logs, and Varnish statistics. |
| Operational complexity | Usually lower when Nginx already fronts PHP-FPM. | Higher, but offers a dedicated programmable HTTP cache layer. |
| When both are needed | Not automatically. Use both only with separate scopes, keys, and synchronized invalidation. | |
Choose Nginx alone when a straightforward page cache meets the site’s rules. Choose Varnish when teams need rich VCL policies, dedicated proxy statistics, or an established Varnish workflow. Neither choice removes the need to classify cookies, methods, query strings, and content changes.
Compare Memcached with a page cache
| Characteristic | Memcached object cache | Full-page cache |
|---|---|---|
| Data type | Objects such as options, transients, and query results. | Complete HTTP responses, often HTML. |
| Execution avoided | Repeated database lookups and some PHP work. | Usually PHP, WordPress, and database work for a cache hit. |
| Personalization | Can support dynamic assembly but does not make output public-safe. | Must bypass or vary for personalized responses. |
| Invalidation scope | Individual keys, groups, or expirations. | URLs, tags, bans, or an entire cache zone. |
| Failure behavior | Eviction or restart produces misses; the database remains authoritative. | A stale or incorrect entry can show outdated or private content. |
| Memory use | Allocated slab memory for many small objects. | Memory or disk for complete responses, depending on configuration. |
Measure before and after
There is no independent, peer-reviewed or vendor-neutral end-to-end benchmark establishing a universal latency, requests-per-second, or percentage gain for this exact Nginx, Varnish, and Memcached combination. The WordPress Optimization handbook says static-file caching can improve performance “several hundred times over” for fairly static pages; that qualitative statement is not a benchmark for this three-component stack.
Measure your own workload with a repeatable test window and the same content:
- Page-cache hit, miss, bypass, and stale-serve counts.
- Memcached hits, misses, evictions, and memory saturation.
- PHP-FPM active workers, queueing, and response time.
- Database query time and connection pressure.
- Origin requests per second and error rate.
- Cold-cache and warm-cache response times for anonymous pages.
- Correctness tests for logged-in pages, comments, searches, forms, and query parameters.
Compare a baseline with one change at a time. A faster anonymous homepage is not an improvement if publishing leaves stale navigation, checkout breaks, or origin errors are hidden by an over-broad stale policy.
Troubleshoot common failures
Everything is a MISS
Check that the request method is cacheable, no bypass cookie is present, the query string is not forcing a bypass, the cache directory or zone is writable, and the upstream response is not sending private or Set-Cookie headers. Confirm that the cache key is identical between requests.

Visitors see old content after publishing
Trace the purge event from WordPress to the page-cache owner. Verify that archive and home-page URLs are included, then inspect each layer for a stale copy. If Varnish and Nginx both cache HTML, purge both or remove the unintended layer.
Logged-in users see anonymous content
Inspect the authentication cookie and the cache decision at every proxy. Ensure the cookie is recognized before hashing and that both bypass and no-store controls are set. Clear existing public entries after correcting the rule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOrigin load spikes after a restart
Memcached and page caches may both be cold. Warm only critical URLs gradually, use request coalescing or stale serving where correctly supported, and watch PHP-FPM and database saturation. Do not respond by making every response permanently cacheable.
Cache works but forms or previews fail
Find the endpoint that handles the POST, nonce, preview, or AJAX request and bypass it explicitly. Keep the surrounding public page cacheable only if the dynamic component is designed to load separately and safely.
Self-managed versus managed infrastructure
| Factor | Self-managed Nginx, Varnish, and Memcached | Managed WordPress or infrastructure service |
|---|---|---|
| Operational effort | You own upgrades, firewalling, capacity, monitoring, purges, and incident recovery. | The provider may operate the daemons and standard cache integration. |
| Configuration access | Full control over Nginx rules, VCL, keys, and memory limits. | Access varies; custom bypass and purge behavior may be restricted. |
| Version and change control | You schedule compatibility testing and rollbacks. | The provider controls part of the stack and should document change windows. |
| Support | Internal expertise is required for cache correctness and security. | Support can reduce routine burden, but complex plugin behavior still needs validation. |
| Best fit | Teams that need topology control and can monitor every layer. | Sites that value predictable operations over low-level customization. |
Before choosing a managed service, verify that it actually provides server-side Nginx or Varnish page caching, Memcached object-cache support, custom bypass rules, purge hooks, log access, and a documented recovery process. Features, geography, pricing, and support boundaries change over time.
Quick Recap
A practical rollout checklist
- Record baseline origin timings, PHP-FPM load, database pressure, and error rates.
- Install and test Memcached as an optional object cache; confirm the site works when it is unavailable.
- Select Nginx FastCGI cache or Varnish as the single public HTML owner.
- Implement method, path, cookie, query-string, and private-response bypass rules.
- Expose cache status in logs or restricted diagnostic headers.
- Connect WordPress publishing events to targeted purge and verify failures are retried.
- Test anonymous, logged-in, comment, search, preview, form, feed, sitemap, and API behavior.
- Warm or refill caches gradually after deployment and monitor origin capacity.
- Document cache ownership, keys, TTL policy, stale policy, purge procedure, and rollback.
