A useful model-vs-model board is a controlled experiment, not just a leaderboard: both models need the same task, inputs, rules, and execution conditions, and the score must say exactly what it rewards. Report trial counts and uncertainty with the results; an early lead from a small sample is not a settled verdict.
Decide what the board is meant to measure
Before running a match, specify the decision the board should help someone make. A ranking can represent raw task performance, performance relative to operating cost, reliability, or some defined combination. Those are different questions, so do not collapse them into a single unlabeled score.
- Task outcome: Define the result that counts as success for this task, such as a win, a correct answer under a stated rubric, or a completed objective.
- Cost-adjusted performance: Include model or API costs when those affect the intended deployment decision. Make the cost source and calculation clear.
- Reliability: Report consistency across repeated trials when dependable behavior matters, not only the best result.
For example, the simulated trading board described by AI vs the MARKET ranked results after API-priced model costs rather than using raw simulated profit alone. Its June 13, 2026 article described two desks with the same simulated starting stake, market scan, live quotes, and shared deterministic risk engine. Those are the project’s reported conditions, not independent proof that every difference in outcome came only from model decision-making.
Match the conditions before comparing results
A fair comparison depends on keeping the relevant conditions alike. If one model receives different information, more attempts, different rules, or a different execution path, the board may measure those differences instead of model behavior.

- Give both models the same task and equivalent inputs.
- Use the same rules, success criteria, and scoring procedure.
- Match model access and execution conditions, including limits that affect how much work each model can do.
- Record any unavoidable differences so readers can see what the comparison does and does not isolate.
The trading example’s $10,000-per-desk figure was the simulated starting stake reported in that June 13, 2026 article; it is not real capital or evidence of real-market performance. The article also described an earlier $1,000 season, so those stakes belong to different periods and should not be blended into one comparison.
Make the task and scoring method explicit
Different tasks require different measures. A conversational answer, a game-playing agent, and a simulated trading decision do not share a meaningful universal score. State the task, the scoring definition, the number of trials, and any cost or runtime measure that matters to the reader’s use case.

For interactive agent play, TextArena is an example of a framework built around competitive text-based games. Its project description and 2025 paper summary describe environments with changing interactions rather than ordinary question-answering. The project-reported environment figures have different scopes: its overview says 57+ environments; its initial-release counts were 16 single-player, 47 two-player, and 11 multiplayer environments; and a footnote said the collection had grown to 74 games by publication. These figures should not be added together or treated as a single current count.
TextArena’s 2025 paper summary describes using TrueSkill, initialized at mu=25 and sigma=25/3, for relative ratings. The authors report faster convergence than Elo but do not provide a quantified result or a described protocol for that comparison. TrueSkill ratings and a cost-adjusted trading score answer different questions; choose a metric suited to the task and explain its meaning rather than treating either as a general-purpose measure.

Separate task skill from format and rule compliance
A low score can reflect several problems. An agent may choose a poor strategy, misunderstand the rules, or fail to produce the required output format. If the board combines these abilities, say so; if the goal is to assess strategic performance specifically, track rule and format failures separately where the task permits.
TextArena’s authors caution that preliminary rankings can mix game-playing skill with understanding the rules and output format. The framework is designed to exercise dynamic interaction, including negotiation, persuasion, deception, and theory of mind, but those are design targets rather than validated measurements of those abilities. Its soft-skill tags are assigned by the authors and are not validated measurements.

Show sample size and uncertainty alongside the ranking
A rank or win rate without its trial count can overstate how much the result establishes. The AI vs the MARKET article explicitly described its sample as small. For any board, display how many trials contributed to each result and avoid presenting a small early advantage as a conclusive ordering.

TextArena’s 2025 authors reported that the live system had evaluated 283 models, including 64 official models hosted by the platform, at the time of writing. This is a time-bound count from a continuously updated leaderboard; submissions could include repeated model variants. It is not an independent validation of ranking quality or a timeless measure of the platform’s coverage.

A practical minimum for a useful board
Before publishing a comparison, check that a reader can answer these questions from the board itself:
Quick Recap
- What task did the models perform, and what counted as success?
- Were inputs, rules, access, and execution conditions matched?
- How many trials produced each result?
- Does the score measure task outcome, cost-adjusted performance, reliability, or something else?
- What important abilities or failure modes may be mixed into the score?
- Are project-reported counts and simulated outcomes labeled with their source, date, and scope?
