Start with the goal, decide when you will need the money, and choose an asset mix you can stick with through losses—not one that simply performed well recently. Then spread investments across asset classes and within each class, check what your funds actually hold, and set a maintenance plan for rebalancing. There is no universally suitable stock-and-bond ratio: the right allocation depends on your time horizon, financial circumstances, and both your willingness and ability to bear risk.
What diversification does—and what it cannot do
Diversification means spreading investments so your portfolio does not depend too heavily on one holding or one source of risk. It has two layers: allocate among asset classes, such as stocks, bonds, and cash, and diversify within each class—for example, across companies and industry sectors. A diversified portfolio can still lose value; diversification does not guarantee a profit or prevent losses.
Asset allocation is the division of your investments among those broad categories. It influences how much the portfolio may fluctuate and how it is positioned to meet a goal. Diversification is how you avoid relying on only a few investments within that allocation. The two work together, but they are not interchangeable: owning many stocks, for example, does not by itself create exposure to bonds or cash.
The practical question is not simply, “How many investments do I own?” It is, “What risks am I relying on, and how much of the portfolio depends on each one?” A portfolio can contain many holdings yet remain concentrated if those holdings have similar exposures or overlap substantially. Conversely, adding another fund does not automatically improve diversification if it mostly repeats what you already own.

Diversification is a way to reduce dependence on a single holding or source of risk, not a way to know in advance which investment will perform best. It cannot ensure that different investments will move in opposite directions, and it cannot turn a loss-making investment into a gain. Use it as part of a deliberate allocation rather than as a promise of safety.
Set the goal and time horizon first
Write down what the money is for and when you expect to use it. A time horizon is the period available to invest before you need to draw on the money. A long-term goal can give an investor more time to ride out market declines, but it does not make losses harmless or remove the need to choose an allocation carefully. If a goal moves closer or changes, the portfolio may need to change too.
Risk tolerance has two parts. Your willingness to accept risk is how much volatility and loss you can endure without abandoning the plan. Your ability to accept risk reflects your financial capacity to absorb losses while still meeting obligations and goals. Someone may be emotionally comfortable with fluctuations but unable to risk money needed soon; another person may have financial capacity but find steep declines intolerable. Consider both rather than relying on age alone.
Before selecting investments, note the goal, expected withdrawal timing, relevant financial constraints, and how you might respond to a significant decline. These are inputs to a decision, not a formula that yields one correct allocation. General investing guidance cannot establish a personal mix without knowing your circumstances.
It can help to separate money intended for different goals rather than treating every account as if it serves the same purpose. A goal with a nearer expected withdrawal date presents a different planning question from one that is further away. The point is not to assign a fixed allocation based on a single date, but to make the timing and purpose visible before choosing how much risk to take.
Be candid about the practical consequences of a downturn. Would you be able to keep following the plan if the portfolio fell? Would you need to withdraw money during that period? These questions do not predict what markets will do. They help distinguish the risk you can financially bear from the risk you are likely to tolerate without abandoning your approach.
Choose an allocation you can maintain
Decide how much of the portfolio belongs in each asset class based on the goal’s horizon and your risk tolerance. Stocks, bonds, and cash are common building blocks, but the category labels alone do not tell you how much risk a particular holding carries. The SEC’s Investor.gov beginner guide discusses illustrative allocations; those examples are not universal recommendations. Avoid copying a ratio from an example or selecting one just because it recently outperformed.

Think through what each category is intended to do in your plan and whether you can live with the possibility that its value will fall. The chosen mix is a target, not a promise about returns. It may be appropriate to revise the target when the goal, horizon, financial situation, or risk tolerance changes. A market move by itself is not necessarily a reason to rewrite the plan.

Write down the target in plain language, including the categories you are using and the role each is meant to play. This gives you something concrete to compare with the actual portfolio later. Avoid treating the target as a prediction: it is a chosen structure for pursuing a goal under uncertainty. A target is useful only if it is understandable enough to maintain and still fits the investor’s circumstances.
Allocation decisions involve trade-offs. A mix that is more exposed to investments that fluctuate can be difficult to stay with during a decline; a mix that feels easier to tolerate may not match every long-term goal. The available facts do not establish one right balance for all investors. Instead, consider the horizon, financial capacity, willingness to accept losses, and need to access the money, then choose a plan you can maintain.
Do not confuse changing the portfolio’s target with rebalancing it. The target expresses the plan; rebalancing brings actual holdings back toward that plan after their relative values have changed. If your circumstances have changed, review whether the target still makes sense. If they have not, a temporary change in performance alone does not require a new target.

Once you have chosen broad categories, look at the exposures inside them. For stocks, that means checking whether exposure is spread across companies and sectors rather than concentrated in a narrow group. For other asset classes, inspect the holdings and mandate in the same way: a fund’s name is not enough to tell you what risks it contains.
Mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) pool investors’ money into underlying investments. A broad fund can make it easier to own many investments, but the structure and label do not prove that it is diversified. A focused fund may hold a limited set of companies, sectors, or other exposures. Several funds can also own many of the same underlying investments, leaving the combined portfolio more concentrated than the fund count suggests.
Review current fund documents and holdings before investing. Check the fund’s index or investment mandate, asset-class and geographic exposure, largest holdings, concentration, overlap with your other positions, and stated fees. Compare the portfolio as a whole—not each fund in isolation. A collection of funds is not automatically more diversified than a single broad fund.
When reviewing a fund, start by identifying what it is designed to hold. Its index or investment mandate can help explain its intended exposure, while the holdings show what is actually in the portfolio. Consider whether the fund is broad or focused, what asset class and geographic exposure it provides, and whether a small number of holdings account for a substantial share of it. Use current fund documents because holdings and fees can change.
Then compare the fund with what you already own. Two funds with different names may share many underlying investments. If you count each fund as a separate source of diversification without checking that overlap, you may overestimate how spread out the portfolio is. Look at the combined exposure and ask whether the additional fund introduces a distinct category or simply increases positions you already have.

Fees matter when comparing implementation choices, but there is no current fee ranking or named fund recommendation here. Check the stated fees in current fund documents and compare products only after understanding their mandates and holdings. A lower stated fee does not by itself establish that a fund fits the portfolio, just as a broad-sounding name does not establish diversification.
Choose an implementation approach
You can manage the allocation yourself using funds, or use a target-date fund that delegates allocation and rebalancing to fund managers. The decision is about control and ongoing responsibility, not a guarantee that one method will be more suitable or perform better.
| Approach | Who manages the mix? | What to examine | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-managed mix of funds | You choose the allocation, select investments, monitor drift, and decide when to rebalance. | Each fund’s mandate, holdings, asset and geographic exposures, overlap, concentration, and current fees. | Offers control over the mix, but requires monitoring and a consistent maintenance process. |
| Target-date fund | Fund managers handle allocation, diversification, and rebalancing. The mix generally becomes more conservative as the target date approaches. | The fund’s actual holdings and concentration, how its allocation changes over time, and current fund documents. | Can simplify ongoing management, but delegates allocation decisions to the fund managers. |
A target date is an implementation feature, not proof that a fund is right for a particular investor or goal. Review what the fund holds and how its allocation changes; compare that with your time horizon and ability and willingness to bear losses. For a self-managed portfolio, decide in advance how you will check and maintain the target mix.

That responsibility includes understanding each fund, looking for overlap, checking drift, and considering the effects of transactions before rebalancing. It offers control, but control is useful only if you are prepared to make decisions consistently instead of reacting to the latest market movement.
A target-date fund can reduce the number of allocation and maintenance decisions an investor has to make directly. Its managers handle diversification and rebalancing, and its mix generally becomes more conservative as the target date approaches. That convenience does not remove the need to examine the actual holdings and allocation path or to consider whether the fund’s approach fits your goal. Do not assume that the target date alone settles those questions.
Compare the approaches on the work you want to take on, the control you want, and the actual exposures involved. For either approach, examine current fund documents, concentrations, and fees. The choice is not a contest between a universally superior do-it-yourself portfolio and a universally superior managed fund; it is a choice about how to implement and maintain a plan.
Make a simple portfolio inventory
Before you can tell whether a portfolio is diversified or out of balance, you need a view of its combined exposures. Record each holding, its current value, and the asset classes and other exposures represented by it. For pooled funds, use the fund documents to look through to underlying holdings where available. Note overlaps rather than counting the same underlying company as separate diversification simply because it appears in more than one fund.
- List the goal and time horizon. Record when you expect to need the money and any financial constraints relevant to the plan.
- Write down the target asset mix. Keep the chosen target in one place so you can compare actual holdings with it later.
- Map holdings to exposures. Identify asset class, sector or other concentration, and overlap across funds using current fund information.
- Check what is missing or overrepresented. Ask whether the portfolio relies too heavily on a single holding, category, or source of risk, and whether that differs from the target.
- Set a review method. Choose calendar reviews, preset percentage thresholds, or another defined process rather than making allocation decisions based on recent winners and losers.
This inventory does not determine whether the target itself is appropriate. It makes the portfolio’s actual composition visible so you can assess whether it matches the plan.

For the inventory to be useful, use one consistent view of the portfolio. Record current values and identify the categories you are comparing, rather than mixing a fund’s name with an estimate of its exposure. Where a fund holds many underlying investments, its current documents can help you see what those holdings are. The aim is not to create a complicated accounting exercise; it is to avoid mistaking the number of account lines or fund names for the amount of diversification.
As you map holdings, note both the broad asset class and any notable concentration or overlap. A fund may provide exposure to a particular category while also having concentrated exposure within it. A second fund may add another category, or it may repeat holdings already represented. These distinctions help you see whether the actual portfolio reflects the target you chose.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Rebalance when the portfolio drifts
Holdings do not grow at identical rates. As a result, their weights can move away from the target allocation, changing the portfolio’s risk profile. Rebalancing means restoring the chosen mix. It is a maintenance task, not a forecast of which asset class will do best next.
There is no single rebalancing schedule required by SEC Investor.gov guidance. Two common methods are calendar reviews—such as checking every six or twelve months—and preset percentage thresholds that prompt action when an allocation drifts beyond a chosen band. These are approaches, not universal prescriptions. Vanguard’s educational material also describes calendar and threshold methods. SEC guidance says rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently; frequent adjustments can turn maintenance into a reaction to short-term market movement.
- Compare actual weights with the target. Use the same asset-class categories you used to set the allocation. Identify which categories are above or below target.
- Apply your predetermined rule. If it is a calendar review, decide whether the drift warrants action under your plan. If it is a threshold method, check whether the preset band has been crossed.
- Consider contributions first. Where suitable, direct new contributions toward underweight categories. This can help restore balance without selling other holdings.
- Check costs and tax consequences before selling. Transaction fees and taxes may affect whether and how to rebalance. Tax treatment depends on jurisdiction and account circumstances, so check the rules that apply to you.
- Make only the adjustments needed to restore the target. Avoid changing the allocation simply because a category has recently performed well or poorly.
When making a decision, distinguish a portfolio that has drifted from a plan that no longer fits. Rebalancing addresses the first; a change in the goal, time horizon, financial situation, or risk tolerance may call for reviewing the target itself.
A calendar approach means checking the portfolio on chosen review dates and deciding whether action is warranted under your plan. A threshold approach means checking whether an asset category has moved beyond a preset amount of drift. Either method can provide structure; the key is to decide how you will review the portfolio before market moves create pressure to act. The SEC’s beginner guide describes six- and twelve-month reviews as examples, not as a schedule every investor must follow.
Relatively infrequent rebalancing can help keep maintenance from becoming a response to every fluctuation. Reviewing a portfolio is not the same as trading every time you look at it. A review can conclude that no adjustment is needed. If you do act, compare the effect of directing new contributions toward underweight categories with the effect of selling holdings that have grown above target.

Before selling, weigh transaction fees and potential tax consequences. The appropriate treatment depends on the jurisdiction and account circumstances; the general guidance here cannot determine an individual tax outcome. Check applicable rules and current transaction costs before acting. Rebalancing is not an instruction to trade regardless of cost, and a preset method should still leave room to consider those consequences.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a fund label guarantees breadth. Inspect the mandate and underlying holdings rather than inferring diversification from the name.
- Counting funds instead of exposures. Multiple funds may overlap substantially. Look at combined holdings and concentrations.
- Choosing a mix from an example or age rule alone. An illustrative allocation is not a personal recommendation; consider the goal, horizon, and both dimensions of risk tolerance.
- Chasing recent performance. Moving into whichever asset class has recently risen most can undermine the target plan and make the portfolio’s risk less intentional.
- Rebalancing without checking consequences. Selling may involve transaction costs and tax consequences. Consider whether contributions can address underweights and check applicable tax treatment before trading.
- Leaving an outdated target untouched. A plan should be reviewed when the goal or your circumstances change, not only when market movements cause drift.
Another common error is to treat a target-date fund as automatically suitable because its date sounds close to a goal’s expected date. The date is only one feature. Check the fund’s actual holdings and how its mix changes over time, then consider whether that approach fits the goal and your capacity and willingness to bear losses.
It is also easy to confuse a scheduled review with an obligation to make a trade. A review is a chance to compare actual weights against the target and check whether circumstances have changed. If the portfolio remains within your chosen approach and the plan still fits, doing nothing may be consistent with the plan.
Keep the plan under review
A diversified portfolio is not a one-time selection. Maintain a written target, know what your funds hold, and follow a rebalancing method that fits your circumstances. Review the target when the goal, time horizon, financial situation, or risk tolerance changes; otherwise, maintain it according to the process you chose rather than reacting to recent performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose an asset allocation for long-term investing?
Start with the goal and when you expect to use the money. Consider both your willingness to tolerate losses and your financial ability to absorb them while meeting obligations and goals. Those factors inform an allocation, but they do not produce one universal stock-and-bond ratio. Review the target if the goal, time horizon, financial situation, or risk tolerance changes.
Does diversification prevent investment losses?
No. Diversification reduces dependence on a single holding or source of risk, but it does not guarantee a profit or prevent losses. A diversified portfolio can still decline in value.
Are mutual funds and ETFs automatically diversified?
No. They pool money into underlying investments, which can make broad ownership easier, but a focused fund may still be concentrated. Review its mandate, actual holdings, asset-class and geographic exposure, concentration, fees, and overlap with your other investments.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow often should I rebalance my portfolio?
There is no single required schedule in the SEC Investor.gov guidance. Calendar reviews, such as every six or twelve months, and preset percentage thresholds are approaches, not universal prescriptions. A review does not automatically mean you need to trade; account for drift, costs, and tax consequences.
Can I rebalance by directing new contributions instead of selling?
Where suitable, directing new contributions toward underweight categories can help restore the target mix without selling other holdings. Before selling, consider transaction fees and tax consequences, which depend on your jurisdiction and account circumstances.
What is the difference between a self-managed portfolio and a target-date fund?
With a self-managed mix, you choose the allocation and take responsibility for monitoring and rebalancing. A target-date fund delegates allocation, diversification, and rebalancing to fund managers and generally becomes more conservative as its target date approaches. In either case, review actual holdings, concentration, and current fund documents; a target date alone does not establish suitability.
The Bottom Line
Build around the goal, horizon, and your ability and willingness to accept losses—not a universal ratio or recent performance. Diversify across and within asset classes, inspect holdings and overlap, and maintain the chosen mix using a planned review method. Before selling to rebalance, consider transaction costs and tax consequences; revisit the target when your goal or circumstances change.
