Build around your financial goal and risk tolerance—not a preset percentage for AI stocks. First decide when you will need the money and how much volatility you can tolerate. Then identify direct and fund-based AI exposure across your whole portfolio, check whether those holdings represent genuinely different risks, and set a rule for reviewing and rebalancing them. There is no universal AI allocation that fits every investor.
1. Decide what the portfolio needs to do
Before choosing AI-related investments, define the job of the money: what it is for, when you expect to use it, and how much loss or volatility you could tolerate along the way. Those answers shape the portfolio’s overall mix; they matter more than whether a particular company or fund is associated with AI.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) explains that asset allocation is personal and depends on factors including investment timeframe and risk tolerance. A longer horizon may allow an investor to accept more volatility, while a shorter horizon may call for less-risky investments. These are considerations, not a formula or an individualized recommendation. See the SEC’s Asset Allocation and Diversification guidance.
- Write down the goal and likely withdrawal date. Money intended for a near-term expense has a different time constraint from money being invested for a distant goal.
- Assess your capacity for risk. Consider whether a sharp decline could force you to sell, derail the goal, or cause you to abandon the plan.
- Set the portfolio’s broad structure first. Decide how much of the portfolio belongs in different asset categories before deciding whether an AI-related investment belongs in it.
It can help to separate willingness to take risk from the practical ability to do so. An investor may feel comfortable with market swings but still need the money soon; another may have a long horizon but be uncomfortable watching a concentrated holding fluctuate. Both the intended use of the money and your response to volatility matter when you decide on the overall mix.

That process will not produce one correct AI-stock percentage for everyone. The available sources do not establish an optimal allocation, expected AI-stock return, or future AI-fund performance. Treat any proposed percentage as a personal planning choice, not a generally proven rule. A useful planning sequence is to decide the broad portfolio mix first, then determine whether an AI-related holding fits within that mix and what exposure it would add.
2. Find every source of AI exposure
AI exposure can come from individual stocks, but it can also be embedded in funds bought for other reasons. Review the holdings of each broad-market, growth, technology, semiconductor, and AI-themed fund in the portfolio. A fund’s name is a starting clue, not a complete account of what it owns.
Look through the portfolio, not just the account list
- List every holding. Include individual securities and funds across accounts you are considering as one portfolio.
- Open each fund’s current holdings information. Record the underlying companies and, where disclosed, their sector or industry exposures. Check the fund provider’s latest holdings and its current prospectus; a ticker or fund label alone cannot show overlap.
- Mark recurring companies and exposures. Note when the same company appears directly and inside one or more funds. Also note repeated exposure to the same sector or industry, even where the company names differ.
- Compare the resulting picture with your intended mix. Ask how much of the portfolio depends on a relatively small group of companies, a particular industry, or a shared growth-related risk.
Counting tickers is not the same as counting independent exposures. Several funds can hold many securities yet repeatedly own some of the same companies or concentrate on related industries. The SEC advises investors to review overlapping fund holdings and warns that a mutual fund or ETF does not necessarily provide diversification if it is narrowly focused, such as on one industry sector. See Asset Allocation and Diversification and the SEC’s ETF guidance.

Distinguish company count from risk drivers
Ask what would cause holdings to fall at the same time, not only how many positions appear on a statement. If several holdings share substantial exposure to one industry or to similar market conditions, adding another fund with those exposures may add complexity without changing the portfolio’s main risks. The relevant question is whether a new holding contributes a meaningfully different exposure relative to what you already own.
A simple working inventory can make this review easier: note the holding, whether it is a direct security or a fund, the recurring companies found in the fund, and any disclosed industry or sector concentration. This is not a forecast of how investments will move together. It is a way to see whether the portfolio’s apparent variety rests on repeated holdings or shared exposures. Review the information again when funds change their holdings or investment approach, rather than assuming an old list remains accurate.

3. Compare investment routes on the same terms
Individual stocks, broad-market funds, and thematic funds are different ways to obtain exposure; the label alone does not establish how diversified or suitable an investment is. Compare the actual holdings and documents rather than assuming that one route is automatically safer or broader. The SEC’s investor materials identify product features, risk, diversification, liquidity, and fees as relevant considerations.
| Route | What to inspect for exposure and overlap | What to verify before investing |
|---|---|---|
| Individual stocks | Each company’s weight in your overall portfolio, including any indirect holding through funds; whether several positions share the same industry exposure. | Company-specific risks, trading liquidity, transaction costs, and the effect of any purchase or sale on your intended allocation. The cited SEC sources do not state specific costs or liquidity for an individual security. |
| Broad-market funds | The current underlying holdings and whether companies you already own directly or through other funds appear again. | The fund’s stated investment approach, fees, liquidity, and risks in its current documents. “Broad-market” in a name is not a substitute for checking its holdings. |
| Growth or technology funds | The companies and sector exposures represented, plus overlap with individual stocks, broad-market funds, semiconductor funds, and AI-themed funds. | How the fund selects or weights holdings, its concentration and other disclosed risks, fees, and liquidity. |
| AI-themed funds | The current holdings, any industry concentration, and overlap with the rest of the portfolio; do not infer diversification from a multi-company portfolio alone. | Index methodology or active mandate, fees, liquidity, and risks in the current prospectus. A thematic fund may be used by some investors as a limited thematic allocation, but the appropriate size depends on the investor and goal. |
For any fund, read its current prospectus and holdings information. The SEC notes that products can differ in features and that fees, risks, diversification, and liquidity are among the factors to evaluate. Its materials on investment products, ETFs, and non-traditional index funds explain why a product’s construction and stated risks deserve attention.
Questions to ask about a fund
- Holdings and overlap: What does it own now, and how does that overlap with the other investments in the portfolio?
- Concentration: Are exposures concentrated in particular companies, industries, or sectors?
- Construction: If the fund tracks an index, how is that index built? If it is actively managed, what mandate and selection approach does the prospectus describe?
- Costs: What fees and other costs apply? Do not assume two funds with similar exposure have the same costs.
- Liquidity and time horizon: What does the fund disclose about liquidity, and is it compatible with when you may need the money?
- Risks: Which risks does the prospectus identify, and do they duplicate risks already present elsewhere in the portfolio?
Apply those questions consistently when comparing alternatives. For example, a thematic label does not tell you whether the fund is index-based or active, how its holdings are selected, what risks the prospectus emphasizes, or what it costs. An index fund’s methodology is worth reading because the index rules shape the exposure the fund seeks to track; an active fund’s stated mandate and approach describe how it makes its selections. Neither label, by itself, proves that the fund is diversified or will perform better.
Liquidity belongs in the comparison alongside holdings and fees, particularly when the money may be needed on a specific timetable. Check what the product documents disclose rather than assuming that similar-sounding funds have identical characteristics. Also consider the practical effect of buying or selling: an investment decision should be compared with what you already own and with the costs and tax consequences that may arise if you later rebalance.
4. Use prospectuses as evidence, not labels
A dated fund document can show why looking through to an index and its exposures matters, but it cannot establish what a fund owns today or what another fund owns. In its 2026 filing for the Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF, the summary prospectus says the fund seeks to track the Indxx Artificial Intelligence & Big Data Index before fees and expenses. It also states that, as of January 31, 2026, the underlying index was concentrated in semiconductors and semiconductor equipment and had significant exposure to the information technology sector. Read the SEC-filed summary prospectus for that dated description.

This example illustrates a concentration disclosed for one index at one date. It is not a live holdings report, a guarantee of current composition, or evidence that all AI-themed funds share the same exposures. For any investment you are considering, consult its current prospectus and holdings information rather than treating a past snapshot as a present-tense description.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe example also shows why a fund’s theme and its underlying exposures are not interchangeable descriptions. A fund may be marketed around AI while its index or portfolio has substantial exposure to particular industries. That does not make the example a verdict on the fund; it makes the prospectus and current holdings useful tools for understanding what role a product could play alongside other investments.
5. Turn the review into an allocation decision
After mapping exposures and comparing documents, decide whether an AI-related holding serves the portfolio’s goal and whether its risks fit the plan you set. You might conclude that an existing indirect exposure is sufficient, that a proposed holding adds a distinct exposure, or that it would deepen a concentration you do not want. The answer depends on the whole portfolio and your circumstances, not a generic target.
If you choose to include a thematic investment, assess it as one part of the full portfolio rather than assuming it can serve as a diversified core merely because it contains multiple companies. Check its actual breadth and concentration against your existing holdings. Do not use a fund label as a substitute for that analysis.
Before acting, revisit the original goal and ask whether the investment decision still fits it. If the proposed purchase increases an exposure already present through other funds, weigh that added concentration against the role you intended it to play. If it contributes a different exposure, consider whether that difference matters to the overall plan. These questions support a deliberate decision without implying that a particular route or allocation is right for every investor.

6. Choose a review and rebalancing rule
Investments will not necessarily perform alike, so weights can drift away from the allocation you chose. Establish a review rule in advance instead of changing the plan in response to every market move. The SEC describes both calendar-interval reviews and threshold-based rebalancing, and notes that investors may sell overweight holdings, buy underweight holdings, or direct new contributions toward underweights. It also advises considering fees and tax consequences. See SEC guidance on asset allocation and rebalancing.
- Write down your review method. Choose either a regular calendar review or a pre-set portfolio-drift threshold that will trigger a closer look. The cited guidance does not prescribe a single interval or threshold for every investor.
- Compare current weights with your plan. Include indirect exposure through fund holdings, not only the direct stock positions visible in the account list.
- Decide whether action is needed. If a category is above or below the allocation you selected, consider whether the change is meaningful under your rule and whether the underlying goal or circumstances have changed.
- Consider how to rebalance. Options described by the SEC include selling some overweight holdings, buying underweight holdings, or directing new contributions to underweight categories where appropriate.
- Check costs and taxes before trading. Fees and tax consequences can affect which approach makes sense for a particular account and investor.
- Record the decision. Note the allocation, the trigger for any action, and the reason. That gives the next review a consistent reference point.
Each approach has a different practical effect: selling an overweight holding reduces that position, buying an underweight one adds to it, and directing contributions changes where new money goes without necessarily selling an existing holding. The appropriate method depends on the account and circumstances. Compare the potential transaction fees and tax consequences before deciding; do not assume one method is always preferable or produces better returns.
During a review, distinguish a shift in market value from a change in the goal itself. If the intended use of the money or your time horizon has changed, the old allocation may no longer reflect the plan. If the goal remains the same and only the weights have drifted, your pre-set review rule provides a consistent way to decide whether to act. Rebalancing is a way to maintain a chosen risk level; it is not a promise of better returns.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Use a practical pre-investment checklist
- Can you state the goal, approximate time horizon, and level of volatility you can accept?
- Have you included both direct securities and underlying fund holdings in the exposure review?
- Have you checked for recurring companies and common industry or sector risks across holdings?
- Have you read the current fund prospectus and holdings rather than relying on a name or dated snapshot?
- Have you compared construction, fees, liquidity, and disclosed risks on the same terms for each option?
- Have you decided how and when to review drift, and considered transaction costs and tax consequences before rebalancing?
This is general educational information, not individualized investment advice. The SEC’s asset-allocation guidance emphasizes that allocation depends on personal circumstances; investors who need a decision tailored to their goals may wish to consult a qualified financial professional.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much of my portfolio should be in AI stocks?
There is no universal percentage supported by the SEC guidance cited here. Asset allocation depends on personal circumstances, including the investment timeframe and risk tolerance. Start with the portfolio’s goal and broad mix, then decide whether and how an AI-related holding fits.

Do several ETFs automatically make a portfolio diversified?
No. Funds can hold overlapping companies or concentrate on the same sector or industry. The SEC’s Investor.gov guidance says: “But a mutual fund or ETF won’t necessarily provide diversification, especially if it is narrowly focused (such as on one industry sector).” Review underlying holdings across the portfolio rather than counting fund names.
Can an AI-themed fund be the core of a diversified portfolio?
A fund’s label and number of holdings do not establish that it is a diversified core holding. Check the current holdings, concentration, index methodology or active mandate, fees, liquidity, and disclosed risks, then assess it against the portfolio as a whole.
What does the Global X AI and technology fund example show?
Its 2026 summary prospectus said the fund sought to track the Indxx Artificial Intelligence & Big Data Index before fees and expenses. As of January 31, 2026, the underlying index was concentrated in semiconductors and semiconductor equipment and had significant information-technology exposure. That is a dated snapshot for one index, not a claim about current holdings or every AI fund.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow often should I review or rebalance AI exposure?
The SEC describes calendar-interval reviews and threshold-based rebalancing but does not prescribe one interval or threshold for everyone. Choose a rule that fits your plan, include indirect exposure through funds, and consider transaction fees and tax consequences before making trades.
What are the ways to rebalance if my portfolio drifts?
Options described by the SEC include selling some overweight holdings, buying underweight holdings, or directing new contributions toward underweight categories where appropriate. Each approach can have different fee and tax effects, so consider those before acting.
The Bottom Line
Build around the goal, time horizon, and risk level—not a universal AI-stock target. Look through every fund for overlapping companies and industry exposures, compare holdings, construction, fees, liquidity, and risks, then use a pre-set review rule to decide whether to rebalance. A thematic label or extra ETF ticker is not proof of diversification.
