There is no universally correct stock, bond and gold ratio for every Indian investor. Build the mix around the job of the money, the date it is needed, your ability and willingness to absorb losses, emergency-liquidity needs and other family commitments. Then diversify within each asset class, review the plan when circumstances change and rebalance when the holdings drift away from it.
This guide shows how to make those decisions without treating SEBI’s educational examples as recommendations or assuming that diversification eliminates losses.
Start with the money’s job, not a percentage
Before choosing an allocation, write down what each rupee is supposed to do. A retirement corpus needed decades from now can have a different risk capacity from a house down payment due next year. SEBI lists goals, risk tolerance and investment horizon as core allocation inputs in its investing factors guidance.

Define the goal and date
- Name the goal: emergency reserve, education, home purchase, retirement or another commitment.
- Estimate the amount required and the date or range of dates when withdrawals may begin.
- Separate money with a near-term deadline from money that can remain invested through market declines.
SEBI Investor states: “For short-term investments, you should avoid risky investments like equity markets.” Read that as a matching principle: money needed soon should not depend on a volatile asset recovering on your schedule. The statement appears in SEBI’s investment-risk guidance.

Check liquidity and commitments first
Account for an emergency reserve, insurance premiums, loan payments, planned large expenses and support for dependants before investing surplus money. An allocation that looks tolerable on paper can become dangerous if you must sell during a fall to pay an unavoidable bill.
Separate willingness from capacity to lose
Willingness is your emotional ability to remain invested during a fall. Capacity is whether your income, reserves, horizon and obligations allow you to wait. Use the lower of the two when setting risk. A high salary does not create high capacity if a large payment is due shortly; a long horizon does not make a loss tolerable when there is no cash buffer.
Understand what the three sleeves actually represent
“Stocks, bonds and gold” describes broad exposures, not interchangeable products. Their sources of return, risks, liquidity and operating costs differ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Sleeve | What it represents | Risks and practical checks |
|---|---|---|
| Indian stocks (equity) | Ownership claims on companies. Returns depend on company performance and market conditions. | Share-price volatility, company-specific risk, broad market risk and concentration. Check whether the horizon can tolerate declines and whether holdings are spread across companies and sectors. |
| Bonds and other fixed income | Lending to a government or company in exchange for interest and repayment of principal according to the instrument’s terms. | Issuer credit quality, interest-rate sensitivity, maturity, liquidity and access. A bond’s stated interest does not remove the risk of default, price movement before maturity or difficulty selling. |
| Gold | Exposure to a precious metal, held physically or through an exchange-traded fund, as described by SEBI. | Price changes driven by economic, geopolitical and supply-demand factors. Compare dealing liquidity, custody or storage, fees, tax treatment and the structure of the product. Gold is not guaranteed to rise when stocks fall or to hedge inflation in every period. |
SEBI’s overview of asset classes explains these distinctions at Understanding Investment Asset Classes.
Choose an allocation you can maintain
Use a written target for each sleeve rather than selecting a ratio because it is popular. The target should be the mix you could continue holding after a severe market decline while still meeting your obligations.

Use scenarios instead of a universal rule
Ask three questions for each proposed mix:
- What is the earliest date I might need this money?
- How much of a temporary fall could I accept without selling in panic?
- What event—job loss, medical cost, marriage, children or retirement—would force me to change the plan?
SEBI’s Asset Allocation Calculator uses a simplified educational thumb rule: a portfolio with 60% equity implies that an investor should be able to accept a fall of about 60% or more from a maximum. This is a stress illustration, not a forecast, probability of loss or recommended equity weight. It does not predict the timing, duration or recovery of a drawdown.
How to read SEBI’s sample diagrams
The SEBI Financial Education Booklet shows three equity/debt/gold combinations:

| Illustrative diagram | Equity | Debt | Gold | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example 1 | 70% | 15% | 15% | An illustration of one possible risk mix, not a model portfolio. |
| Example 2 | 40% | 50% | 10% | An illustration of a different balance, not advice for a particular age or goal. |
| Example 3 | 60% | 25% | 15% | An illustration only; the calculator’s 60% stress example should not be read as an endorsement of this ratio. |
The booklet is available from SEBI. Its publication year is not established in the material cited here. No authoritative source establishes one optimal allocation or an expected return for a general Indian retail investor, so do not turn these diagrams into a target without your own goal and risk analysis.
Diversify inside every sleeve
Owning all three labels does not automatically make a portfolio diversified. SEBI says diversification matters both across asset classes and within them; its explanation is in How to Manage Investment Risks.
Stocks: avoid a few-name portfolio
A portfolio of two or three shares can suffer a permanent company-specific setback even when the wider market is stable. Spread equity exposure across a sufficiently broad set of companies and, where appropriate, sectors rather than allowing one employer, industry or theme to dominate. Check overlap when you own more than one equity product: several products can hold many of the same companies.

Bonds: examine the issuer and the term
Do not label every fixed-income holding “safe.” Review who owes the money, the issuer’s credit quality, when principal is due, how the price may respond to interest-rate changes and whether you can sell before maturity. A single lower-quality corporate issue creates concentration risk even if stocks and gold are elsewhere in the portfolio. Government securities have their own maturity and price behavior; they are not a substitute for an emergency bank balance when immediate access matters.
RBI Retail Direct describes retail access to eligible Government of India securities. Current eligibility, available securities and platform facilities must be checked in the RBI Retail Direct FAQ; availability is not a promise that every security is continuously offered or suitable for your goal.
Gold: distinguish metal exposure from the wrapper
Physical gold adds custody, storage, purity and buy-sell considerations. An exchange-traded fund changes the custody and dealing arrangement but still has product fees, trading liquidity and tax implications. Compare the wrapper’s costs and access with the role gold is meant to play; do not assume that a gold holding has a fixed return or a guaranteed negative correlation with equities.
Compare instruments before buying
For each candidate holding, record the following facts in one table or worksheet:
- Market risk: how far the price could move and what drives that movement.
- Credit risk: whether repayment depends on a company or other issuer, and the quality of that issuer.
- Interest-rate risk: how a change in rates could alter a bond’s market value before maturity.
- Maturity and horizon: whether the instrument’s repayment date matches when you need the money.
- Liquidity: how readily you can sell at a reasonable price, including any dealing hours or market depth.
- Access: account, eligibility and platform requirements, including the facilities currently offered by the provider.
- Fees and friction: fund or platform charges, brokerage, spreads, storage or custody expenses and other transaction costs.
- Tax treatment: the applicable asset classification, holding period and transaction date.
This comparison prevents a high-level allocation from hiding a low-quality or illiquid instrument. Two holdings in the same sleeve can have very different outcomes because their issuers, maturities, wrappers and costs differ.

A practical build process
- List goals and dates. Create a separate line for each objective, the amount required and the earliest likely withdrawal date.
- Ring-fence liquidity. Keep emergency and near-term money in arrangements whose access and stability match those needs before assigning a long-term market allocation.
- Assess risk capacity and willingness. Include income reliability, debt, dependants, age, lifestyle, family commitments and the size of any unavoidable future payment. SEBI discusses these factors in its pre-investment considerations.
- Set a target range or target weights. Choose the stock, bond and gold proportions that fit the goal and that you could hold through the stress scenario you identified. Write down why each sleeve exists.
- Select diversified holdings within each sleeve. For stocks, check company and sector concentration. For bonds, check issuer, maturity, credit quality and sale conditions. For gold, check whether the physical or ETF structure, custody and fees fit the purpose.
- Document costs and taxes. Save the product documents, purchase dates, charges and the rule you will use to calculate gains. Do not rely on a headline return that ignores these deductions.
- Invest according to the plan. Make purchases in a way that preserves the intended weights and liquidity. Avoid allowing a recent price move to rewrite the allocation without a goal-based reason.
- Set a review date and triggers. Review on a practical schedule and also after a major life change, such as marriage, having children, retirement or a substantial change in income or obligations.
Test whether the mix is tolerable
Run a drawdown thought experiment
Imagine the equity portion falling sharply while bonds and gold move independently. Calculate the effect on the whole portfolio, not just the stock sleeve, and ask whether you would still meet near-term obligations. SEBI’s 60%-equity example is deliberately severe and simplified; use it to test your reaction, not to forecast an actual loss.
Test a liquidity shock
Ask what you would sell if income stopped for several months or an unexpected bill arrived. If the answer is a long-maturity bond, a thinly traded product or a depressed equity position, the portfolio may contain too little accessible reserve for your circumstances.
Test concentration
Look through each product to identify repeated companies, sectors, issuers or a single gold wrapper. Diversification lowers some company, issuer and asset-specific risks, but it cannot remove market-wide price volatility or guarantee a profit.

Market movements can make an allocation different from the one you selected. Rebalancing means bringing the portfolio back toward the written target rather than letting the best recent performer determine the next risk level.

Reassess after life changes
SEBI highlights milestones such as marriage, children and retirement as reasons to revisit an investment plan. Also reassess after a job change, new debt, a change in dependants, a different goal date or a major change in emergency reserves. A once-suitable allocation can become unsuitable without any market movement.
Tax and cost checks for Indian investors
Tax treatment is not uniform across equity, bonds and gold. It can vary with the instrument, holding period, transaction date and your individual circumstances. The Income Tax Department publishes current rules and computation guidance at Capital Gain and Computation of Tax for Individual. Verify the rule that applies when you transact and seek qualified tax advice for a personal situation.
Include taxes and dealing costs in the rebalancing decision. Selling an overweight holding may create a taxable gain and charges; using new contributions to correct part of the drift may be more practical, but only if it still meets the target and liquidity plan.

- Copying a percentage from a diagram: Treat SEBI’s 70/15/15, 40/50/10 and 60/25/15 examples as illustrations. Build from your own goal, horizon and risk capacity.
- Calling a three-asset portfolio “fully diversified”: Diversify companies, sectors, issuers, maturities and product structures within the sleeves.
- Using equity for a near-term bill: Match the investment’s risk and liquidity to the withdrawal date; SEBI advises avoiding risky equity markets for short-term investments.
- Ignoring bond risk: Review credit quality, interest-rate sensitivity, maturity and the ability to sell, not just the coupon.
- Assuming gold always hedges a crisis: Gold has its own economic, geopolitical and supply-demand drivers and can fall or lag for periods.
- Rebalancing by headlines: Follow a prewritten trigger and account for tax, costs and liquidity instead of chasing the recent winner.
- Forgetting life changes: Revisit the plan after major family, employment, debt or retirement changes.
- Confusing a calculator with a forecast: SEBI’s drawdown illustration is a stress tool, not a prediction of the size or timing of your next loss.
A compact decision checklist
Before implementing or changing the portfolio, confirm that you can answer “yes” to each applicable item:
- I know the goal, amount and earliest withdrawal date for this money.
- Emergency cash and unavoidable commitments are covered separately.
- The proposed risk is acceptable both emotionally and financially.
- Each stock, bond and gold holding has a stated role.
- I have checked concentration inside every sleeve.
- I understand issuer, maturity, liquidity, fees, custody and tax features.
- I have recorded the target allocation and a review or rebalancing rule.
- I know which life events will cause an earlier review.
A diversified portfolio is therefore a repeatable decision process, not a magic ratio: assign each rupee a job, select exposures that match the time and risk of that job, spread risks within and across sleeves, and keep the plan aligned as your life changes.
