To avoid accidental sector concentration, measure the combined exposure of your direct shares and every fund you own—not just the number of holdings. List the underlying positions, assign sectors consistently, total each sector’s share of the portfolio, then decide whether the result fits your goals, time horizon and risk tolerance. There is no universal sector cap in the cited investor guidance, and diversification cannot prevent losses when the broader market falls.
What sector diversification does—and does not—do
A portfolio is sector-diversified when its overall value is not unduly dependent on the fortunes of one industry or on several industries exposed to the same economic forces. The word “overall” matters: owning many stocks does not necessarily mean owning a broad range of businesses. Ten shares in one industry are still concentrated, and a fund can add exposure to a sector you already hold directly.
Diversification is a way to manage certain risks, not a promise of returns or protection against every decline. SEBI Investor explains that some risks, including market-wide price volatility, cannot be diversified away. A broad fall in Indian equities can affect a portfolio even when its holdings span industries. SEBI’s investor education on investment risk also distinguishes diversification across asset classes from diversification within an asset class.
For an equity portfolio, the practical aim is to avoid having one company, industry or shared economic driver dominate the outcome. This does not mean every sector must have the same weight, nor that a portfolio must include every sector. The appropriate mix depends on the investor’s circumstances; the sources do not establish a universally safe number of sectors, a maximum sector percentage, or a model stock list.

Start with goals, time horizon and risk tolerance
Before changing holdings, identify what the money is for and when it may be needed. Equity prices can be volatile, so money required soon should not be treated as though it can remain invested through any downturn. SEBI’s risk guidance advises avoiding risky equity investments for short-term needs and taking account of time horizon and risk tolerance when choosing investments. It also cautions against volatile or illiquid investments when funds are needed soon. Read the guidance at SEBI Investor: How to Manage Investment Risks.
Keep near-term cash requirements separate from the equity-allocation decision. A sector review cannot make an unsuitable time horizon suitable. If a goal is close, consider whether equity exposure itself—not just sector balance—matches the amount of risk you can bear. This is general education, not a personal allocation recommendation.
Audit your actual sector exposure
Use a repeatable inventory rather than relying on the labels in your account or on the number of tickers. Include direct shares and the underlying holdings of funds, including diversified funds. A fund’s name or category alone does not reveal every overlap with your own shares or with other funds.

1. Make one inventory of all equity holdings
For each directly held share and each fund, record its current value and its share of the total portfolio. For each fund, obtain its latest available portfolio disclosure and record the underlying positions and their weights. Use current disclosures where available: fund holdings change, so an old factsheet can give a misleading picture of present exposure. The sources here do not specify a particular disclosure date, reporting schedule or platform; check the fund’s official documents for the information and date applicable to that scheme.

Your working sheet can use columns such as:
- Holding: the direct share or fund.
- Value: its current value in the portfolio.
- Underlying company: for a fund, each disclosed holding and its fund-level weight.
- Sector or industry: the classification you choose to use consistently.
- Market-cap segment: where the disclosure provides enough information to classify it.
- Source and date: where the holding information came from and when it applied.
This is an audit, not a recommendation to trade. If holdings are difficult to identify or classification differs among documents, note the uncertainty rather than treating a fund label as a precise sector breakdown.
2. Look through each fund instead of counting it as one holding
For a fund position, multiply the value of your fund investment by each underlying holding’s disclosed weight to estimate the portfolio value attributable to that company. Then combine that amount with any shares you own directly in the same company. For example, if your account holds a company directly and also owns a fund that holds the same company, both exposures belong in the same total.
Apply the same principle at sector level: add the attributable values of the underlying companies classified in each sector, along with the value of directly held shares in that sector. If a fund holds cash or an asset outside your sector categories, record it separately rather than forcing it into an industry. Because weights and holdings may be reported at different dates, keep the dates visible and avoid presenting an estimate as an exact real-time exposure.
3. Choose and apply one classification consistently
Sector and industry labels can differ between fund disclosures and other classification systems. Select a consistent basis for your comparison, record which basis you used, and investigate material inconsistencies instead of silently mixing categories. If one source groups several businesses together and another separates them, explain the treatment in your worksheet. The goal is a usable like-for-like estimate, not a false impression of precision.

4. Rank sector weights and inspect related exposures
Add the values attributed to each sector, then divide each sector total by the portfolio value you are auditing. Rank the results from largest to smallest. This reveals the largest sector exposure, but the ranking is only a starting point: businesses in different sectors can still respond to similar economic drivers, while companies within one sector can have different business models and risks.
Ask what could affect several large holdings at once. Consider whether their prospects depend on the same kind of demand, financing conditions, commodity input, regulation or other shared factor. Treat this as a qualitative stress check, not a claim that a particular set of industries always moves together. The official sources support the importance of managing concentration, but they do not define a single numerical threshold at which a portfolio becomes “overconcentrated.”
Choose a construction approach that you can maintain
A portfolio can be assembled from individual shares, diversified funds, or a combination. The decision is not simply “stocks versus funds”: a fund can overlap with direct shares, and a portfolio made up only of funds can still carry concentrated exposures. Compare the options by their combined holdings and by the effort needed to keep the portfolio aligned with your plan.
| Approach | What to inspect | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Direct shares | Sector and company weights, any overlap with funds, and market-cap exposure. | You can see and adjust each position directly, but you must select, monitor and rebalance the holdings yourself. The sources do not establish a required holding count or a universally suitable stock basket. |
| Diversified or index funds | Current underlying holdings, sector overlap with other funds and shares, market-cap exposure, and costs in the scheme documents. | A fund may provide exposure to many holdings, but its name does not prove that your combined portfolio is diversified. Check the scheme’s actual holdings and information before investing. |
| Sector-specific funds | The targeted sector, its weight in your total portfolio, and how it overlaps with direct holdings and other funds. | The concentration is intentional rather than broad diversification. AMFI says sector-specific funds limit diversification and are riskier; sector performance is cyclical, so timing matters. |
For scheme-level comparisons, read the relevant documents rather than inferring suitability from a category name or past performance. SEBI’s investor material on investments in mutual funds discusses diversification, scheme information and comparing risks and expected yields after tax. Costs, holdings and other scheme-specific details were not established here, so compare the current official information for the schemes you are considering. Also assess the monitoring burden: a structure is only useful if you can understand its exposures and keep track of changes.

Understand why sector funds need a separate look
A sector-specific fund invests in a particular sector; it is not a substitute for broad exposure across industries. AMFI’s explanation of mutual fund scheme categories says sector funds limit diversification and are riskier, and notes that sector performance tends to be cyclical. SEBI Investor likewise explains that thematic and sectoral mutual funds focus on an area and do not provide the same diversification across industries.
That is a concentration-risk warning, not a blanket rule that every sector fund is unsuitable for every investor. If you hold one, include its underlying sector exposure in the same portfolio audit as your direct shares and other funds. Do not count it as diversified merely because the fund owns several companies: several holdings within one sector can still share a major source of risk.

After the audit, decide what action—if any—would keep your portfolio consistent with your plan. You might establish a personal maximum exposure, a review trigger, or a rule for how new contributions are directed. These are investor-chosen guardrails, not a universal sector cap or a number endorsed by SEBI or AMFI in the cited material. Do not borrow a percentage from another investor or treat a published market snapshot as a recommended target.

Review whether new purchases, fund contributions or changes in fund holdings have altered the combined exposure. Rebalancing can also create costs or tax consequences that depend on the investment and circumstances; the cited sources do not provide individual tax calculations. Check the applicable scheme and tax information before acting. Avoid making frequent changes solely because a sector has recently risen or fallen: AMFI’s warning about cyclical sector performance is a reason to consider the risks of timing, not a signal for a particular trade.
Use market data as context, not as a portfolio target
Regulatory reporting can show how equity-fund assets were distributed across sectors at a particular point, but a reported market allocation is not an ideal allocation for an individual. SEBI publishes a monthly equity-fund deployment report with sector data. Its returned page label includes “Deployment of Equity Funds Monthly Report for March – 2025-2026,” while the URL sits under a 2025 directory and contains “equityapr25.” That ambiguity means a figure from the table should not be presented as a current benchmark or a recommendation without verifying the underlying report and reporting period.
Even a clearly dated sector share in an aggregate fund report would describe those reported funds, not the right balance for your goals, time horizon or risk tolerance. Use such data, if relevant, as descriptive context only. Your audit should be based on your own holdings and current underlying disclosures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCommon mistakes and how to correct them
- Counting tickers instead of exposure: Many positions can all belong to one industry. Total their portfolio weights by sector.
- Ignoring fund overlap: A diversified fund may own companies you already hold directly or through another fund. Look through each fund and combine repeated exposures.
- Assuming a fund name guarantees diversification: Check underlying holdings and the scheme’s stated focus. Sector-specific funds are concentrated by design.
- Mixing classification systems without noticing: Sector totals may be misleading if disclosures classify businesses differently. Choose one basis and document exceptions.
- Treating diversification as a guarantee: A broader mix can address some company- or sector-specific risks, but not broad market-wide risk.
- Copying a universal percentage: The cited guidance does not prescribe a sector cap. If you set a limit or review trigger, make clear it is your own rule and tie it to your circumstances.
- Using dated aggregate data as a target: A regulator’s fund-deployment table is a dated description, not a personal allocation recommendation. Verify the reporting period and do not infer a target from it.
- Putting near-term money into volatile holdings: Separate money needed soon from the equity portfolio and consider whether the time horizon suits the risk.
A repeatable portfolio review checklist
- Write down the goal and time horizon. Identify when the money may be required and how much volatility you can tolerate.
- List every direct share and fund. Record current values and the date of the information used.
- Collect fund holdings. Use available official portfolio disclosures and note their dates.
- Look through funds. Attribute fund value to underlying positions and add repeated companies to direct holdings.
- Classify consistently. Choose one sector or industry basis and record how you handle mismatched classifications.
- Total and rank sector exposure. Include both direct and indirect exposure, then investigate major shared drivers across sectors.
- Compare the result with your own guardrails. Decide whether to leave the portfolio unchanged, direct future contributions differently, or review a position. Do not treat an external percentage as a regulator’s rule.
- Set a review trigger. Choose a practical point at which to repeat the audit, such as a change in goals or holdings; no universal review frequency is established by the cited guidance.
If you cannot confidently assess how your circumstances, time horizon and risk tolerance translate into an investment decision, SEBI’s mutual-fund investor material notes that investors may seek expert advice. Check an adviser’s registration and suitability independently; this article does not recommend a particular adviser or service.
