To make a Discord bot talk with AI, connect it to a voice channel, receive and send audio through Discord’s voice transport, and connect that audio to a speech AI workflow. The hard parts are receiving audio reliably, handling turn-taking, and ensuring your voice library supports DAVE end-to-end encryption (E2EE), which Discord requires for calls as of March 1, 2026.
How an AI voice bot works
A voice bot is not just a text bot that reads a reply aloud. It needs three connected systems:
- Discord voice connection: The bot joins a channel and maintains a separate voice connection for audio.
- Audio pipeline: The bot receives member audio if it needs to listen, and encodes and sends generated audio if it needs to speak.
- Speech AI: A service interprets incoming speech and generates a spoken response, either directly or through a sequence of transcription, text reasoning, and speech generation.
Discord uses Gateway signaling to establish voice sessions, then a separate voice WebSocket and UDP transport for media. That means voice requires protocol and network handling beyond the normal text-message flow.

Choose a speech architecture
Decide whether you want a direct audio conversation or a pipeline with separate speech and text stages. Neither approach is universally better; the right choice depends on how much control and visibility you need.

Before choosing a provider or model, check current pricing, quotas, regional availability, data handling, and uptime for the intended service. These details can change, and no general cost or latency figure establishes which design will work best for your bot.
Connect the bot to a Discord voice channel
The connection process uses both Discord’s main Gateway and its voice transport. At a high level, the bot requests a voice-state change, receives the events needed to establish the session, and then negotiates the media connection.
- Request to join. Have the bot request a voice-state update for the target channel.
- Wait for both voice events. Handle
VOICE_STATE_UPDATEandVOICE_SERVER_UPDATE. The server update supplies a session token and endpoint used to connect to the voice WebSocket; do not assume one event alone is enough to finish setup. - Negotiate the voice connection. Connect to the voice WebSocket, establish the UDP connection, and select a supported transport-encryption mode. Discord’s current voice documentation uses voice gateway version 8 for its documented opcodes.
- Keep connection state current. Handle disconnects and reconnections, and do not cache voice server endpoint results; a later session may require a new endpoint.
Use a maintained voice library where possible, but verify that its current release supports the features your design needs. The discord.js voice documentation describes audio sending and receiving in voice-based channels; receiving audio is a separate requirement from basic playback, so confirm that your chosen library and setup expose it.

Send and receive audio
To make the bot speak
Provide generated audio to the Discord voice connection in a format the library can process. Discord’s voice guide describes sending Opus audio in encrypted RTP packets. The bot also needs to enter the appropriate speaking state before sending audio. Let the selected library handle packetization and transport details unless your implementation specifically requires lower-level control.
To let the bot listen
Capture audio from the voice connection and pass it into the selected speech workflow. Confirm that the library supports receiving audio, that the bot can identify which member is speaking if your experience needs that, and that your pipeline can cope with the audio format it receives. Do not assume a library that plays audio also provides everything required for capture.
To manage turns
Define when the bot considers a member’s turn complete, what happens when someone speaks over its response, and whether it can process partial input. These behaviors affect the conversation flow: for example, a bot that waits for a complete utterance may feel different from one that begins responding while a member is still speaking. Test the behavior with the chosen AI workflow rather than assuming the service and Discord connection will coordinate turns automatically.

Make DAVE and privacy part of the design
As of March 1, 2026, Discord says clients and apps without DAVE support cannot participate in calls. For a bot being built or maintained now, DAVE compatibility is a launch requirement to verify, not a future consideration. Check that the library supports DAVE for the call type and runtime you use.

It uses MLS group key exchange, and media frames are protected using per-sender encryption keys. A bot’s ability to connect to voice is therefore not sufficient proof that its full audio path works with DAVE; confirm support through the implementation you actually deploy.
Tell server members when the bot is listening, what audio or transcripts are sent to an external AI service, and whether anything is retained. Discord’s protocol documentation explains connection and encryption mechanics, but it does not establish a complete consent, disclosure, or retention policy for your application. Set those policies for your own bot and service integrations.

Test the bot in its deployment environment
Voice behavior depends on the library, AI service, and network conditions together. Test in the environment where the bot will run, not only on a developer’s machine.
- Join and leave channels, including repeated joins after a disconnect.
- Check both directions: incoming audio reaches the AI workflow, and generated audio plays in the channel.
- Test silence, interrupted speech, overlapping speakers, and a member speaking while the bot is responding.
- Force reconnections and confirm that the bot establishes a fresh voice session rather than relying on stale endpoint information.
- Check UDP connectivity and firewall behavior in the deployment environment; Discord voice media uses UDP.
- Verify DAVE support for the library release, call type, and runtime you intend to use.
- Review the selected AI service’s current pricing, quotas, regional availability, and data-handling terms before launch.
A USB microphone is optional for local testing of microphone capture; it is not a Discord requirement and does not improve the bot’s AI performance.

Common implementation problems
The bot joins but does not speak
Check that audio is being supplied to the voice connection, that the selected library can process the chosen audio input, and that the speaking state is set before transmission. Also verify the connection is fully established rather than treating the join request as proof that media is ready.

The bot speaks but cannot understand members
Playback does not establish that audio reception is configured. Confirm that your voice library supports receiving audio, that incoming audio reaches the speech service, and that the AI session is configured to accept it.
The connection fails or stops working after a reconnect
Inspect the voice-state and voice-server event handling, UDP access, and reconnect path. Request and use the session details for the current connection rather than reusing a cached voice endpoint.
The bot cannot participate in a call
Check DAVE compatibility first, including support in the particular library release and deployment runtime. A bot can have otherwise working voice code and still fail if its implementation cannot participate in the call’s E2EE requirements.
