For a first custom mechanical keyboard, a compatible hot-swap kit is usually the simplest route: match the PCB, case, plate, stabilizers, switches and keycaps to the exact layout, then assemble and test the board before closing it up. A soldered build is also possible, but takes more tools and care. The key rule is to check the specific parts together—matching “65%” or “TKL” labels alone does not guarantee they will fit.
Choose a build path and layout first
Decide how you want to assemble the board before buying parts. A hot-swap PCB has sockets that accept compatible switches without soldering, making it a practical beginner option and easier to revise later. A soldered PCB requires each switch to be soldered in place, so plan for the right equipment and a more involved assembly.
Next, choose a layout that suits your typing and desk needs. A smaller board takes less desk space, but may omit dedicated keys; some compact boards provide those functions on programmable layers. Check the exact key positions and sizes rather than relying on a form-factor name. ANSI and ISO layouts differ, and variations such as split backspace, a short right Shift, a split spacebar or a nonstandard bottom row can affect several other parts.
Check that every part is compatible
Treat the keyboard as a system. Choose the exact PCB, case and plate combination before purchasing add-ons, then verify the details below. Parts described with the same layout percentage are not necessarily interchangeable, as Mechalick’s first-build guide cautions.

- Layout and key positions: Confirm ANSI or ISO support, split or unusual keys, bottom-row arrangement and any split spacebar.
- PCB and case: Check mounting points and screw locations, the USB cutout and, if present, the daughterboard connection and clearance.
- PCB and plate: Confirm the plate supports the PCB’s specific layout and switch positions. Some designs may not use a plate.
- Switches and PCB: Check the switch footprint and whether the PCB uses hot-swap sockets or requires soldering. A switch being described as mechanical does not, by itself, establish that it will fit.
- Stabilizers: Match the mounting style and positions required by the PCB or plate.
- Keycaps: Make sure the set covers your layout and includes the correct modifier and spacebar sizes.
- Firmware: Confirm support for the exact PCB and revision, and check whether it needs a board definition or a particular firmware file.
Compatibility is specific to the parts and revisions in your kit. Start with the kit’s build guide and current board documentation rather than assuming a similarly named component will work.
Gather parts and tools
A typical build uses a case, PCB, compatible switches, keycaps and stabilizers for longer keys; include a plate if the design uses one. A hot-swap build generally needs a keycap puller, a switch puller and the drivers specified by the kit. For either route, have a known-good data-capable USB cable and a clean, stable work surface.

For a soldered build, also prepare a temperature-controlled soldering iron, suitable electronics solder, tip cleaner, fume extraction or good ventilation, eye protection, a heat-safe stand and flush cutters. Keep the kit’s own assembly instructions at hand: required tools and details can vary between boards. Parts and safety guidance are also covered in the KeebKit build guide and QMK’s hand-wiring documentation.
Test the PCB and confirm firmware before assembly
Connect and test the bare PCB before adding foam, switches or case parts that make access more difficult. Follow the board maker’s instructions to check the connection and confirm that the firmware recognizes key presses. If the PCB supports QMK, its official beginner tutorial covers setting up an environment, building firmware and flashing it; the exact process depends on the board.

QMK describes its role this way: “QMK Firmware fills the role of that software, detecting button presses and passing that information on to the host computer.” QMK support is not universal, however, and a PCB may use a different firmware or workflow. Verify support for the exact board rather than assuming that every PCB uses QMK or VIA.
Assemble the keyboard in a testable order
Use the kit’s instructions if they differ from this general sequence. The following order, adapted from Mechalick’s first-build guide, keeps troubleshooting access open while the board is being put together.

- Inspect the kit. Compare the parts with the build guide and check that you have the intended PCB, case, plate and hardware.
- Test the bare PCB. Connect it and verify the connection and firmware before installing parts over it.
- Prepare and install stabilizers. Use the mounting style and positions specified for the board.
- Join the plate and PCB using a few switches, if the design uses a plate. For a soldered assembly, follow the board’s instructions for positioning and soldering instead.
- Install the remaining switches. On a hot-swap PCB, check that each switch’s pins are straight and that it seats properly before pressing it into place. For soldering, use the board’s assembly instructions.
- Test every key before putting the PCB in the case. If a key does not register, inspect the switch and, as applicable, its socket or solder joint, then check firmware and configuration.
- Connect the USB assembly or daughterboard as directed. Place the PCB in the case and close it without overtightening.
- Fit the keycaps and check the finished board. Test each key, the stabilizers and the firmware behavior you intend to use.
Troubleshoot a key that does not register
Check a failure while the PCB is still accessible. On a hot-swap board, remove the affected switch carefully and check for bent pins, seating and socket contact. On a soldered board, inspect the switch’s solder points. Then check the relevant keymap, firmware configuration and flashing process. For a hand-wired keyboard, QMK’s hand-wiring guide identifies switch contacts, solder points, diodes, column wiring, firmware configuration and flashing as areas to investigate.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For soldered or hand-wired work, use a stable, ventilated workspace, appropriate protective equipment and a heat-safe stand; return the hot iron to its stand whenever it is not in use. Unplug the board before inspecting or correcting a joint. Avoid prolonged heat: QMK warns it can damage components such as switch housings and degrade the solder joint.

Choose switches, keycaps and firmware by fit and preference
Once compatibility is settled, choose switches based on the feel and sound you prefer; the sources do not establish a universally best switch, case material or sound profile. Likewise, choose keycaps for the exact layout coverage and sizes you need, not just their appearance. For firmware, make sure the exact PCB is supported and that its remapping workflow suits you. There is no single combination that is right for every builder.
