To build a custom Android home screen, use three separate pieces: your launcher controls pages, icons, the grid, and widget placement; KWGT creates and edits the widget itself; and an optional preset pack supplies ready-made designs. You can keep the phone’s stock launcher, build a widget from a blank canvas, and add it to the home screen without installing anything else. You need the separate KWGT Pro Key when a design pack requires importing external presets or skins.
This guide takes you from an empty home-screen area to a usable layout, explains when a custom launcher is worthwhile, and shows how to resize a KWGT design for your particular phone rather than assuming one grid fits every device.
Understand the three parts before you install anything
The most common setup mistake is treating the launcher, KWGT, and a preset pack as interchangeable. They solve different problems.

Android’s launcher is the app that draws your home-screen pages and manages app icons, folders, the grid, and widget positions. Your phone already has one installed, so you can start there. A replacement launcher is useful only when the stock launcher cannot provide the layout control you want.

Nova Launcher is one example of a customizable replacement. Its listing describes subgrid positioning, icon controls, themes, folders, and backup and restore. Those features can make it easier to align a KWGT widget with icons, but they do not make Nova mandatory: a stock launcher or another replacement can work if it offers the widget size and placement controls you need.
KWGT is the widget editor
KWGT Kustom Widget Maker creates the visual and functional widget that sits on the launcher. Its editor lets you start with a blank canvas or a starter skin, then add and style text, fonts, colors, shapes, images, layers, and touch actions. Typical projects include clocks, weather panels, battery and system monitors, and music information.
KWGT is not a home-screen replacement. It does not decide how many pages you have or where your app icons go; the launcher does that.

A preset pack is an add-on, not a widget editor
A pack such as Gift KWGT supplies predesigned layouts that you load and customize in KWGT. The pack itself is not a standalone widget-building app. Its listing requires KWGT Pro, so install the editor and check the pack’s dependency before spending time choosing a design.
Decide whether you need a custom launcher
Begin with the launcher already on your phone. This avoids an unnecessary migration and lets you learn KWGT in the environment you will actually use.

Switch launchers only when you can name the limitation you are solving. For example, a launcher that cannot place a wide widget beside a narrow icon column is a reason to change; simply having KWGT installed is not.
Plan a home-screen layout that remains usable
Decide what the screen must show before selecting a style. A visually impressive preset can become frustrating if the clock is tiny, touch targets overlap, or the information you need is buried on another page.

Choose the information hierarchy
- Primary information: put the item you check most often, such as time, date, or the next calendar event, in the largest and highest-contrast area.
- Secondary information: use smaller sections for weather, battery state, music, or system details.
- Actions: reserve clear touch areas for shortcuts. KWGT supports touch actions, but a decorative element should not sit over an important launcher icon.
- Empty space: leave margins around the widget and icons so the wallpaper does not become a dense sheet of controls.
Plan for more than one wallpaper
Check the design against both light and dark wallpapers, or against the light/dark variant you intend to use. A color that reads well on a dark background may disappear on a bright one. This is a visual design check, not a guarantee that every preset has a matching theme.
Install KWGT and choose a starting method
- Install KWGT Kustom Widget Maker from Google Play.
- Open KWGT and choose whether to start with a blank canvas or a starter skin.
- For a blank project, add only the elements your layout needs: text, shapes, images, layers, and touch actions. Use the editor’s font and color controls to establish hierarchy before adding decoration.
- For a preset workflow, keep KWGT installed and continue with the pack and Pro Key requirements below.
The current KWGT listing says that importing presets from SD and external skins is a Pro feature. That means you can learn the editor and build your own widget without importing a pack, but an external design may require the paid key.
Know when KWGT Pro is required
The KWGT Kustom Widget Pro Key is a separate app listing and requires the KWGT app. Its listing states that it unlocks importing from SD and external skins; the current KWGT listing also identifies preset and external-skin importing as Pro features.
If you are building entirely from a blank canvas, you can begin in the editor without importing a third-party pack. If you intend to use Gift KWGT or another pack that states a Pro dependency, install the Pro Key before troubleshooting why the pack is not available.
The Pro Key listing displayed a US price of $6.99 when accessed on October 9, 2026. That is a country-specific price observed on that date, not a worldwide or permanent price; Google Play pricing and availability can change.
Build a widget from a blank canvas
This route gives you the most control and avoids committing to a pack’s style or dependency.
1. Start with the canvas
Open KWGT, create a new widget, and select a blank canvas or starter skin. Think of the canvas as the content area that will later be placed inside a launcher widget slot.

2. Add the structural layers
Create broad layers first: a background shape, a primary text area, and separate groups for secondary information. Layers make it easier to move or scale a whole section without rebuilding individual elements.
3. Add text and visual elements
Set the clock or other primary value first, then choose fonts, colors, and alignment. Add shapes or images only after the information is readable. KWGT’s editor also supports system-monitor, weather, and music information, so you can add those as separate, visually subordinate groups.
4. Add touch actions carefully
Assign touch actions to obvious controls and leave a comfortable buffer around them. Do not place a tiny action target directly beside another action or over a launcher icon; accidental taps are a layout problem, not a styling problem.
5. Save a working version
Save after the basic hierarchy works, before experimenting with colors or decorative layers. A saved baseline makes it easier to undo a change that harms readability.
Install a preset pack and place it on the home screen
The exact menu wording varies by Android version and launcher, but the sequence is consistent: install the dependencies, add a KWGT widget slot, then select the pack inside KWGT.

- Install KWGT. Confirm that the editor opens normally.
- Install the Pro Key if the pack requires it. The key requires the KWGT app; it does not replace it.
- Install the preset pack. A pack such as Gift KWGT provides designs for loading in KWGT rather than appearing as an independent widget type.
- Open an empty home-screen area. Long-press an open area, choose the widget option, and open the widget picker. Android and launcher labels can differ.
- Add a KWGT widget. Choose a KWGT size offered by your launcher and place it on the page. The initial size is only a starting container.
- Open the widget. Tap the newly placed KWGT widget to enter the editor.
- Select the installed pack. Choose the pack and then the design you want to use.
- Save or apply the preset. Return to the home screen and inspect the result at the actual size of the widget slot.
If the pack listing supplies a different sequence, follow that listing’s current instructions; launcher interfaces are not standardized.
Resize and align the design on your phone
No single grid or scale value fits every Android screen. Aspect ratio, launcher grid, icon size, font scaling, and the widget dimensions offered by the picker all affect the result.

Use KWGT’s Layer scaling
When a preset is too large or too small inside its widget container, open the preset’s Layer settings and adjust the scale. The Gift KWGT listing specifically recommends the Layer option when a design does not fit.
Scale the complete layer or main group before changing individual text sizes. This preserves the design’s internal proportions. If one label remains cramped afterward, edit that element separately.
Use the launcher’s resize handles
Long-press the placed widget and use the launcher’s resize handles when they are available. Expand or narrow the container until it has the intended relationship with the icon grid. Some launchers expose only coarse handles; others provide finer grid or subgrid positioning.
Align to the actual icon grid
Use the launcher’s grid settings and, where available, subgrid positioning to line up widget edges with icon columns. Nova Launcher lists subgrid positioning, but you should not assume another launcher offers identical controls.
Check readable and interactive states
- Read the primary text from your normal viewing distance.
- Check that secondary labels do not collide after scaling.
- Tap every assigned action and confirm that neighboring controls do not trigger accidentally.
- Inspect the result with the wallpaper and icon theme you actually use.
Build from scratch or use a preset?

Choose a blank canvas when the arrangement matters more than speed. Choose a preset when you already like its visual language and are willing to install the required Pro component and tune it on your device.

- Visual style: decide whether the typography, color contrast, and density suit your wallpaper.
- Widget types: check whether it includes the information you need, such as clocks, weather, battery, music, or system panels.
- Compatibility information: look for a current description, update date, and notes about Android or KWGT requirements.
- Developer support: note whether the publisher explains installation and sizing problems.
- Dependencies: confirm whether KWGT Pro is required before installing or purchasing the pack.
Store ratings, download counters, prices, and availability can vary by country and change over time. Treat them as current store details, not permanent performance measurements.

Troubleshoot the problems that occur most often
The preset does not fit the widget
Open the preset in KWGT and adjust the main Layer scale. Then use the launcher’s widget resize handles and grid controls. If the design still clips, reduce decorative elements or choose a larger widget slot. Do not copy a scale value from another phone; the available picker sizes and screen proportions differ.
The pack does not appear in KWGT
- Confirm that KWGT itself is installed and opens.
- Confirm that the pack installation completed.
- Check the pack listing for a Pro requirement and install the KWGT Pro Key if necessary.
- Close and reopen KWGT, then check the pack selector again.
A pack that requires external-skin importing cannot be made available by installing the pack alone when the required Pro component is missing.
Widget placement is imprecise
Open the launcher’s grid settings, inspect the widget’s resize handles, and look for a subgrid or fine-positioning option. Nova Launcher lists subgrid positioning; other launchers may use different names or provide no equivalent. If the stock launcher cannot achieve the alignment, that is a concrete reason to consider a replacement.
Text is clipped or unreadable
Reduce the number of elements, enlarge the primary text, increase contrast, or adjust the KWGT layer scale. Check Android’s display and font scaling settings as well, because system-level scaling can change how much room the home screen appears to provide.
Touch actions trigger the wrong control
Separate interactive layers, enlarge the intended target, and remove overlapping transparent shapes that may intercept taps. Test each action after every major resize rather than waiting until the end.
The design looks good only on one wallpaper
Change the widget’s colors or add a restrained background shape behind critical text. If the pack supplies a light/dark variant, test both before deciding which one to keep.
