You can build a custom AI character chatbot by storing the character’s identity and behavior separately from your app, assembling those instructions with relevant conversation context, and sending the result to a language model. You can connect to a hosted model API or run a model locally with a runtime such as Ollama. The model, prompt, and context handling all affect the result; a custom interface alone does not guarantee Character.AI-level quality or lasting memory.
What you need to build a character chatbot
A character chatbot is an application wrapped around a language model. The app keeps character details and conversation state, builds a request from that information, and presents the model’s response in a chat interface. The model generates the reply; the interface and your application decide what instructions and history it sees.
The basic request usually combines several pieces: general behavior instructions, the character definition, optional information about the user, selected previous turns or a summary, and the user’s newest message. The assembled request—not just the latest message—is what guides the model. If a character forgets a detail, that detail may be absent from the request, pushed out by a context limit, or contradicted by another instruction.
- Character data: The name, identity, personality, scenario, greetings, examples, and behavioral boundaries.
- Chat state: The current conversation, plus any summary or selected facts you choose to carry forward.
- Model connection: A hosted API or a locally running model.
- Interface: A place to select or edit a character, send messages, and read replies.
Start with a private, single-user prototype. A public chatbot introduces additional work around accounts, abuse controls, moderation, data retention, and age-appropriate use; the details depend on where and how you deploy it.

Choose hosted or local model generation
The first architectural decision is whether your app sends requests to a hosted model provider or runs inference on a computer you control. Neither route is universally better. A hosted API is generally the simpler integration path, while local inference gives you a way to generate replies without relying on a hosted inference service. Your actual privacy, cost, quality, and speed depend on the provider, model, hardware, and implementation.
| Consideration | Hosted model API | Local runtime |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Integrate the provider’s API and follow its current model and request documentation. | Install a compatible runtime and model, then connect your app to the local service. |
| Data path | Chat content is sent to the selected provider. Check its current privacy and retention terms. | Generation can run on your machine, but an app may still send telemetry or use cloud services, and local storage can still be exposed. |
| Costs | May involve usage-based or subscription charges. Current prices were not established here; check the provider’s terms. | May involve hardware and electricity costs. No universal hardware requirement or current cost applies to every model. |
| Quality and latency | Depend on the selected model, network, prompt, and provider configuration. | Depend on the selected model, computer, runtime, prompt, and local configuration. |
| Maintenance and control | The provider manages model serving; the provider’s available controls determine what you can change. | You manage the runtime and model updates and can choose among compatible local models. |
Option 1: Connect to a hosted API
Your application sends a request to a model provider and displays the response. This avoids having to serve the model on your own machine, but it introduces a third party into the data path. Before choosing a provider, check its current API format, model availability, pricing, rate limits, privacy terms, retention policy, and safety requirements.
Keep API credentials on a server you control rather than embedding secrets in browser code. A browser-delivered secret can be inspected and reused by someone else. For a small prototype, the server can simply accept a chat message, assemble the request, call the provider, and return the generated reply. Avoid treating an example integration or a project’s claim of API compatibility as proof that a particular provider’s current terms or behavior suit your use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOption 2: Run a model locally
A local runtime such as Ollama can provide chat generation on a compatible computer. Its documentation describes local chat requests, model listing and configuration, and carrying response context into a later request to continue a conversation. That makes local inference a practical route for experimenting without sending each generation request to a hosted inference service.
Local does not automatically mean private. Your app could still use cloud features or transmit telemetry, and chat logs saved on the computer may be accessible to other users or software. Local generation also requires a compatible setup, but there is no single hardware specification that can be responsibly recommended for every model. Check the runtime and model documentation for the particular model you intend to run.
A frontend is not the model
A character-chat interface stores fields, displays messages, and sends prompts. It does not generate responses by itself. A self-hosted interface can still send messages to a cloud model, just as a local model can be used behind a separately built interface. Decide which part you are hosting and which part processes the conversation before describing the system as self-hosted or local.

Define the character before writing the chat app
Keep character details in editable data rather than scattering them through application code. This lets you revise the character without changing the mechanics of message handling. Character-card formats documented by SillyTavern include identity and personality information, a scenario, example messages, a first greeting, alternate greetings, and prompt overrides. You can use the same categories as a starting point for your own character data.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Identity: Who the character is, what they know, and what they should not claim to know.
- Voice: Sentence length, diction, humor, emotional register, and any distinctive verbal habits.
- Scenario: Where the conversation begins, what is happening, and what the character wants in the scene.
- Boundaries: How the character should respond when a request falls outside its intended role.
- Opening: A greeting that sets up a playable situation and leaves the user room to respond.
- Examples: Short exchanges that demonstrate the desired voice and interaction style.
Keep stable character facts separate from the user’s self-description and from the changing conversation. This separation makes it easier to update one category without accidentally rewriting another. It also helps when debugging: you can check whether a fact is wrong in the character definition, the user profile, or the recent chat.
Write instructions that demonstrate behavior
Broad adjectives such as “interesting” or “realistic” give the model little guidance on what to do. Translate the desired effect into observable behavior. For example, rather than only saying that a character is “wry,” specify that they use dry humor sparingly and do not turn every reply into a joke. Rather than saying “immersive,” state whether the character should speak in first person, maintain the scenario, and avoid narrating the user’s thoughts or actions.
Keep instructions compatible with one another. “Never break character” can conflict with a requirement to explain a limitation or boundary clearly. Decide which instruction takes priority, then write it explicitly. Examples can show tone and pacing, but a few examples do not guarantee a particular response in every situation.
Build each model request from character instructions and chat context
Do not send only the newest user message if you expect the model to follow a character definition or remember earlier turns. Assemble the request from the instructions and relevant context your app has available. Prompting systems such as SillyTavern describe requests that can include character definitions, persona details, history, documents, and the current message; their prompt-inspection workflow is useful because it shows what is actually being sent.

- Load the stable instructions. Include the app’s general rules and the current character definition.
- Add optional user information. Include only profile details that are relevant to this chat and that the user expects the app to use.
- Select conversation context. Add recent turns, a summary, or both, depending on your design and the model’s available context.
- Append the current message. Make it clear which text is the user’s latest input rather than a character instruction.
- Inspect the final request. Provide a development view that shows the message array or assembled prompt sent to the model.
Conversation history only helps when your implementation sends it or retrieves a relevant summary. A model does not automatically have reliable access to every message a user has ever exchanged with your app. When an older detail disappears, inspect the final request to see whether it was omitted, whether it conflicts with newer information, or whether the implementation’s context limit excluded it.

Use summaries as a deliberate continuity feature
If a conversation grows beyond the amount of history you can send, a summary can preserve selected details. Treat it as application-managed context, not as proof that the model has perfect memory. Decide what matters for future replies—for example, established scene facts or an explicit user preference—and keep the summary concise enough to fit alongside the character instructions and current exchange.
Do not silently turn guesses into remembered facts. If a summary is generated automatically, review how your app handles uncertainty and corrections. A user’s correction should be able to replace a mistaken detail, rather than leaving both the original and corrected versions in the context and asking the model to reconcile them.
Implement a small, inspectable prototype
Keep the first version narrow: one character, one chat, and one model connection. The goal is to make the data flow understandable before adding character libraries, accounts, or elaborate memory features.
Recommended Free Tools
- Create editable character data. Store the identity, voice, scenario, boundaries, greeting, and example dialogue in a structure your app can load and edit.
- Create the message flow. When a user sends a message, combine it with the character instructions and the selected context.
- Send the request through one backend path. For a hosted service, keep credentials on the server. For local generation, connect to the local runtime using its documented interface.
- Display and retain the reply. Show the response in the chat and retain only the history your continuity design requires.
- Add prompt inspection before polishing the UI. Log or display the final request safely in development so you can diagnose missing or conflicting context.
Keep provider-specific request formatting separate from character data. That makes it easier to change models or runtimes without rewriting every character definition. It also prevents a character prompt from becoming tangled with credentials, network handling, and interface behavior.
When testing, avoid placing real or sensitive conversations into a prototype until you have decided where messages go, whether they are stored, who can access them, and how deletion works. If you later make the app public, revisit those decisions for the actual deployment rather than assuming the private prototype’s defaults are adequate.
Test character behavior and continuity systematically
Before polishing the interface, create a small set of conversations that exercise different parts of the design. Use the same test messages when comparing changes so you can tell whether a prompt edit, context change, or model change caused a difference. This is a practical evaluation workflow, not a benchmark or guarantee of quality.

- Ordinary exchange: Does the character respond in the intended voice without needing an unusually leading prompt?
- Stable fact: Ask about a detail in the character definition and check that the reply is consistent.
- Scene change: Introduce a change in the scenario and see whether the character handles it coherently.
- Long conversation: Continue beyond the length you expect to support and check whether important context remains available.
- User correction: Correct an established detail and see whether later replies follow the correction.
- Boundary case: Try a request that should trigger the behavior you specified in the character’s boundaries.
Assess whether replies keep the intended voice, respect the user’s agency, use scene facts consistently, and remain useful as the context grows. If a reply fails, inspect the request sent to the model before changing the interface. Change one variable at a time—such as a character field, example, instruction order, model, or amount of context—so you can see what actually helped.
Decide how conversation data is handled
A custom interface does not establish what happens to its chat data. The service that runs the model, the server that assembles requests, and the app’s own storage can all affect who processes or retains messages. Review each part of the data path instead of relying on a label such as “custom,” “self-hosted,” or “local.”
Character.AI’s published training-data documentation describes several kinds of data used by its systems, including publicly available data, user content and interactions, internal safety and testing data, synthetic data, and third-party commercial sources. The documentation says it began collecting and using data for model development in 2021 and describes post-training. Those statements describe that service’s disclosure; they do not establish what another model provider collects, retains, or uses.
- Read the current privacy and retention documents for the model API, hosting service, and any storage service you use.
- Determine whether chat history is stored, how long it remains, and who can access it.
- Check whether submitted conversations may be used for model improvement.
- Decide how a user can delete a conversation and whether deletion also removes stored summaries or backups.
- Minimize the data you collect; do not request sensitive details unless the app genuinely needs them.
Do not promise that conversations stay private unless you have verified the complete data flow and the relevant terms. Running generation locally can change where inference happens, but it does not answer how your application stores chats or whether other services are involved.
What to know about replacing Character.AI
Character.AI’s Help Center page titled “Is there an API?” is dated May 2, 2023, and says the service did not then offer an API. Because that statement is dated, check the live help page before relying on it as a description of current availability. Do not treat an unofficial or private interface as a supported API.

Common problems and how to diagnose them
The character keeps changing personality
Check whether the character definition is actually present in the final request and whether examples reinforce the intended voice. Look for conflicting directions—for example, a short character description asking for restrained replies alongside examples that are consistently elaborate. Revise one source of conflict at a time and retest with the same messages.
The character forgets earlier details
Inspect the request for the relevant earlier turn or a summary that contains the fact. If neither is present, improve context selection or summary handling; rewriting the character’s personality instructions will not restore missing chat history. If the fact is present, check for a later correction or conflicting statement.
The model ignores a boundary or instruction
Make the expected response concrete and unambiguous, then test the boundary with realistic wording. Check whether the instruction is included and whether another instruction or example points in the opposite direction. Prompt changes can guide behavior, but no particular prompt format guarantees consistent compliance.

A local setup does not work as expected
Confirm that the runtime is installed, the chosen model is available to it, and your application is using the runtime’s current documented chat interface. Compatibility and hardware needs are model-specific; consult the runtime and model documentation rather than assuming one machine specification fits all cases.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Choose a private prototype or a public service before deciding how much account, moderation, and retention work you need.
- Choose hosted inference or local generation based on your data path, setup, maintenance, and cost priorities—not on an assumption that one route is always more private or higher quality.
- Write the character’s stable facts, voice, scenario, opening, examples, and boundaries as editable data.
- Assemble instructions and relevant context with each new message, and make the final request inspectable during development.
- Test ordinary replies, stable facts, scene changes, long conversations, corrections, and boundaries using repeatable examples.
- Review current provider and hosting terms before sending real conversations, and define storage and deletion behavior for your own app.
