Build the CI environment as a disposable Docker Compose project: define your application, test runner, database and other dependencies in Compose; assign each build a unique project name; wait for dependencies with health checks; run the suite; collect logs and reports; and tear the project down in cleanup. This gives every job a repeatable environment without requiring a permanently managed test database.

Docker describes Compose as suitable for development, staging, production, testing and CI workflows. Its value in CI is not merely starting containers: the Compose file becomes a versioned description of the services and network that your tests expect.

What a Compose-based CI environment contains

A useful test project normally has three layers:

  • System under test: the application image or source tree being tested.
  • Test runner: a service or one-off command that runs unit, integration or end-to-end tests.
  • Dependencies: stateful or networked services such as a database, queue, cache or third-party API substitute.

Compose creates a private network for the project. Services address one another by their Compose service names, so application code should connect to a database at a hostname such as db, not at localhost. Keep those service names stable; changing them between local development and CI creates avoidable configuration differences.

Docker characterizes this pattern as a way to create and destroy isolated testing environments. The isolation is effective only when the project name, data volumes and cleanup policy are handled deliberately.

Choose one Compose configuration strategy

There are two supported ways to keep CI settings close to development settings. Select the simpler one that matches the differences you actually have.

Profiles in one file

Profiles let one Compose file contain services or settings grouped for environments such as dev, test and staging. A test runner can be placed in a test profile while the database remains available to any profile that needs it.

      context: .
      target: test
    profiles: [test]
    depends_on:
      db:
        condition: service_healthy

Invoke the selected profile explicitly in CI, for example docker compose --profile test up -d. Profiles avoid duplicating a complete service definition, but they can become difficult to reason about if many environment-specific variables, mounts and commands are mixed into one large file.

A CI override file

Use a second file when CI needs materially different ports, volumes, environment variables, build targets or restart behavior. Compose merges files in the order supplied:

docker compose -f compose.yaml -f compose.ci.yaml up -d

The base file can describe normal development, while compose.ci.yaml changes only what CI needs. Docker documents this additive -f pattern for environment-specific settings. Review the merged result before running it; a later file can replace or extend values in ways that are easy to miss in a code review.

How to decide

Need Usually the better fit Reason
Only a few optional services or commands Profiles One definition keeps service names and common settings together.
Different ports, mounts, restart policies or build targets CI override file Environment-specific changes remain visibly separated.
Both optional services and substantial CI differences Profiles plus an override Profiles select the topology; the override changes CI-specific values.

Create the base Compose file

Start with a checked-in compose.yaml. The exact image names and commands depend on your application, but the relationships should be explicit.

    file: ./secrets/db_password.txt

This example illustrates the important structure rather than prescribing a particular database or password arrangement. In CI, provide the secret file through the runner’s secret store or a temporary file and remove it during cleanup; do not commit it.

If your test image is already built by the CI system, replace build with the image reference produced by that job. If the image must be rebuilt from the current commit, use --build with up.

Make dependency readiness explicit

depends_on controls startup order. It does not, by itself, prove that a database has completed recovery, accepted connections or finished initialization. Tests that start as soon as a container process exists will intermittently fail when the service is still becoming ready.

Add a health check to each stateful dependency

A health check should exercise the service’s real readiness signal: a database connection, a queue’s health endpoint or an HTTP request that returns a successful status. Set an interval, timeout, retry count and, where necessary, a start period long enough for first-run initialization.

Gate consumers on health

Use a long-form dependency condition such as condition: service_healthy for services that must wait for the dependency. Use service_started only when process start is genuinely sufficient, such as an application that can retry its own connection while the dependency initializes.

Handle migrations deliberately

If schema migrations must complete before tests, make them an explicit step or a dedicated one-shot service. A database health check can report that the server accepts connections while the schema is still absent. Run migrations after the database is healthy and before the test command, then fail the job if migration exits unsuccessfully.

Remove the accidental leading space before the second command when copying it into a shell. Alternatively, put migration and test execution in a script that stops on the first failure.

Prevent concurrent CI jobs from colliding

Compose derives container, network and volume names from the project name. If every job uses the default directory-based name, two builds on the same runner can address or remove one another’s resources.

Set a unique name from the CI system’s build identifier:

docker compose -p ci-${BUILD_ID} up -d
# or
COMPOSE_PROJECT_NAME=ci-${BUILD_ID} docker compose up -d

The identifier must be unique among jobs that can run concurrently and safe for Compose naming rules. Use the same value for every command in that job, including logs, exec and down. Docker specifically recommends a unique build number on a CI server to prevent interference between builds.

Do not rely on random host ports to provide isolation. Prefer the internal Compose network and service names. Publish ports only when a browser test or an external CI step must reach the service, and make those host ports configurable in the CI override file.

Render and validate the effective configuration

Variables, profiles and multiple files can produce a different configuration from the one you see by reading a single YAML file. Run:

docker compose -f compose.yaml -f compose.ci.yaml --profile test config

config parses, resolves and renders the Compose definition in canonical form. Inspect the output in CI logs when diagnosing a job, but redact values that could contain credentials. This check catches missing variables, unexpected file merges, disabled profiles and malformed health-check commands before containers are started.

For a safer preflight, run the command as a validation step and fail the job if it exits nonzero. Keep image tags, Compose-related tooling and action versions pinned according to your organization’s update policy so that an otherwise identical commit does not silently receive a different dependency image.

Run the isolated test lifecycle

The fundamental lifecycle is start, test, destroy:

docker compose up -d
./run_tests
docker compose down

In CI, make the commands more explicit and ensure cleanup runs even when tests fail.

  1. Choose the project name and configuration. Export COMPOSE_PROJECT_NAME=ci-${BUILD_ID}, select the profile or override files, and run docker compose ... config.
  2. Build and start. Use docker compose ... up --build -d when the test image must be rebuilt. Omit --build only when a previously built, immutable image is intentionally being reused.
  3. Run one-off tests. Use docker compose ... run --rm test for a new container that executes the test command and is removed afterward. Use docker compose ... exec app ... when the command must run inside an already-running service.
  4. Collect diagnostics before teardown. Run docker compose ... logs --no-color and copy test reports, coverage files and screenshots to CI artifacts. Saving logs after containers are removed loses the most useful failure context.
  5. Always destroy the project. Run docker compose ... down from a job cleanup or “always” step. Add volume removal only when the volumes are disposable and no later job needs them.

For a test runner that is itself defined as a service, this pattern is often enough:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

docker compose -p ci-${BUILD_ID} -f compose.yaml -f compose.ci.yaml up --build -d
docker compose -p ci-${BUILD_ID} -f compose.yaml -f compose.ci.yaml run --rm test
status=$?
docker compose -p ci-${BUILD_ID} -f compose.yaml -f compose.ci.yaml logs --no-color || true
docker compose -p ci-${BUILD_ID} -f compose.yaml -f compose.ci.yaml down
exit $status

Use your CI platform’s cleanup syntax so the log and teardown commands execute after a failed test as well as after a successful one.

Integrate Compose into a CI provider

A CI job needs to check out the repository, install or enable Docker and Compose, then execute the same commands you use locally. Docker’s official GitHub Actions example separates building and exporting an image, testing it, and performing a later multi-platform build and push; it also notes that the initial build’s internal cache can be reused by the later build.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

For a Compose-based project, place the Compose build and test lifecycle in the test job:

  1. Set up Docker using the provider’s supported setup actions or runner configuration.
  2. Restore the CI platform’s build cache where available.
  3. Set a unique project name and any required profile or override files.
  4. Render the configuration with docker compose config.
  5. Build, start, migrate if required, and run the test service.
  6. Upload logs, test reports and coverage as artifacts regardless of test outcome.
  7. Run teardown in an unconditional cleanup step.

Keep publishing separate from testing when possible. A failed test should prevent a release image from being pushed, while a diagnostic artifact should remain available for debugging.

Speed up builds without sacrificing reproducibility

Container builds are often the longest part of a Compose test job. Improve speed in ways that preserve repeatability:

  • Order Dockerfile layers so stable dependency installation occurs before frequently changing source files.
  • Use the CI provider’s supported build cache and make cache misses visible in job output.
  • Build once for the test job and reuse that image for later stages instead of rebuilding from the same commit.
  • Pin base images and important service images to an explicit version rather than an unqualified latest tag.
  • Run only the services needed by the selected profile; an unused cache or worker still consumes startup time.

Do not trade away isolation by sharing a mutable database container between unrelated builds. A faster job that can read another branch’s data is not a reliable test environment.

Handle configuration and secrets safely

Use an environment file or explicit variables for non-sensitive settings such as a test database name, feature flag or service port. Keep the file in the CI workspace only when it contains no credentials.

Passwords, tokens, private keys and connection strings with embedded credentials require a secret mechanism. Docker explicitly advises against using ordinary environment variables as the secret store. Environment variables can appear in process inspection, diagnostic output or CI metadata. Compose secrets, mounted files and the CI provider’s protected secret facility reduce that exposure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Never commit a secret file or print its contents while debugging.
  • Use separate credentials for CI and production.
  • Grant the test job only the permissions its dependencies require.
  • Delete temporary secret files during unconditional cleanup.
  • Check rendered configuration and logs for accidental secret exposure before retaining them as artifacts.

Diagnose common failures

Symptom Likely cause Correction
Tests fail to connect immediately after startup The dependency process started but is not ready. Add a service health check and gate the consumer with service_healthy; increase retries for first-run initialization.
Two builds rename or remove each other’s containers Both jobs use the same Compose project name. Set a unique -p value or COMPOSE_PROJECT_NAME for every command.
The CI service uses local-development ports or volumes The base file was used without its profile or override. Run the intended profile, pass all -f files in order, and inspect docker compose config.
Tests pass locally but fail in CI because a hostname cannot resolve The code uses localhost instead of a Compose service name. Connect to the dependency by its stable service name, such as db, from containers.
Logs disappear after a failed job Teardown ran before diagnostics were collected. Capture docker compose logs in an unconditional step before down.
Schema-related tests fail on a fresh database The database is healthy but migrations did not run. Make migrations an explicit, fail-fast command between readiness and tests.
Credentials appear in job output Sensitive values were passed as ordinary variables or printed by a debug command. Use the CI secret mechanism or Compose secrets and redact diagnostic output.

Operational checklist

  • All required services, including the test runner, are defined in version-controlled Compose configuration.
  • Service names are stable and container-to-container connections do not use localhost.
  • Stateful dependencies have meaningful health checks.
  • Consumers use health-based dependency conditions where startup order is insufficient.
  • Migrations or other initialization work has an explicit, checked exit status.
  • Profiles or override files make CI differences intentional and reviewable.
  • docker compose config is run for the exact files and variables used by CI.
  • Every concurrent build has a unique project name.
  • Images and relevant tools are pinned and build caching is enabled where appropriate.
  • Logs and test reports are uploaded before teardown.
  • Cleanup runs unconditionally and removes disposable resources.
  • Secrets are supplied through a secret mechanism, not committed files or ordinary environment variables.

When Compose is the right CI choice

Compose is a strong fit when the test suite needs several cooperating services and you want the same topology on a developer workstation and in CI. It is especially useful for integration tests that must exercise a real database, queue, cache or HTTP dependency rather than a mock.

A different orchestration system may be more appropriate when the test requires a multi-node cluster, sophisticated scheduling, production-scale networking or long-lived shared environments. Even then, the Compose model remains a useful local and pull-request test harness when its service boundaries match the tests.

The reliable pattern is straightforward: define the complete dependency graph, select CI-specific configuration deliberately, render it, give each run a unique namespace, wait for actual readiness, execute tests, preserve evidence and clean up. Those controls turn Docker Compose from a local convenience into a repeatable CI testing environment.
