Choose your destination first: aircraft engine maintenance is a regulated, hands-on path centered on inspection, repair and return-to-service authority, while engine manufacturing covers production, assembly, machining, testing, quality and process engineering. In the United States, the FAA Powerplant rating (often combined with Airframe as an A&P certificate) is the key maintenance credential; it is not a universal requirement for factory production jobs.

The strongest plan is to match training to the job you want, document every qualifying task, and compare school, apprenticeship and employer-led routes by the experience and credentials they actually provide.

Start by choosing maintenance or manufacturing

Aircraft engines are supported by two overlapping but distinct career systems. Maintenance professionals keep engines and components airworthy in airline, repair-station, military or other aviation settings. Manufacturing professionals build, inspect, test and improve engines and their parts in factories and engineering centers.

Engine manufacturing

Factory roles include production assembly, precision machining, nondestructive testing, metrology, inspection, materials and processes, tooling, robotics, quality assurance, test operations and manufacturing engineering. Some jobs are entry level and train employees after hiring; others expect technical certificates, an associate degree, an engineering degree or prior industrial experience.

Do not assume that an FAA mechanic certificate is required for every manufacturing position. Read the employer’s posting: a production assembler may need mechanical aptitude and safety discipline, while a manufacturing engineer may need a relevant degree and process-control knowledge.

What the U.S. FAA mechanic certificate covers

The FAA Aviation Mechanic certificate has two ratings: Airframe and Powerplant. The Powerplant rating is the rating directly aligned with engine work. Holding both ratings is commonly called an A&P certificate and can broaden the maintenance duties for which an employer can use you.

Experience thresholds

For one rating, FAA guidance requires at least 18 months of appropriate practical experience. To qualify for both Airframe and Powerplant through experience, the requirement is 30 months of concurrent experience performing duties appropriate to both ratings. These are experience thresholds, not simply time employed or time sitting in a classroom.

Review the FAA’s Experience Requirements to Become an Aircraft Mechanic before relying on a job, internship or military specialty to satisfy the requirement.

School route

An FAA-certificated Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS) is a structured way to become eligible for testing. FAA career guidance says most AMTS programs take about 18 to 24 months, depending on the ratings and program design. Graduation does not itself issue the mechanic certificate: you still need to meet the other eligibility conditions and pass the applicable tests. The FAA overview is How to Become an Aviation Maintenance or Avionics Technician.

Documented practical experience or OJT

Applicants who qualify through work must prove that they performed actual qualifying maintenance. Training time by itself does not count, and military service alone is not enough; the FAA evaluates the relevant specialty and the work actually completed.

FAA guidance states: “You will need to consistently document your OJT activities.” A useful record identifies each task, the date or period, time spent and the certificated mechanic who observed or validated it. A purchased AMT logbook is one option, but you may create your own log or use a sample format. The record matters more than the brand or format of the notebook.

  1. Agree with your supervisor which tasks are within the rating you are pursuing.
  2. Record the specific component, maintenance action, reference data and time spent soon after the work.
  3. Have a certificated mechanic validate the entry while the details are still verifiable.
  4. Keep copies of work orders, task cards or employer letters that support the log.
  5. Ask the local FAA office or designated representative to review whether your evidence is sufficient before scheduling examinations.

Military experience

Eligible military training or experience can provide another route, but the FAA looks at the specialty and documented duties. A general statement that you served, or a record that shows only classroom training, does not automatically establish the required practical experience.

Repairman certificates

The FAA Repairman Certificate is narrower than an A&P. It is tied to specific work and an employer or organization recommendation. It can fit a specialized hands-on role, but it is not a general replacement for an A&P across employers. Read the privileges and limits at Become an FAA-Certificated Repairman and confirm that the prospective employer’s work actually falls within them.

Build the practical skill set employers describe

GE Aerospace’s U.S. Manufacturing and Productions Careers page describes entry-level U.S. manufacturing jobs with paid training. It identifies mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, safety and quality habits as broadly useful. Depending on the posting, CNC, metrology, blueprint reading and robotics experience can strengthen an application.

  • Blueprints and tolerances: learn symbols, datum schemes, fits and geometric tolerancing.
  • Measurement: practice with calipers, micrometers, gauges and coordinate-measurement concepts.
  • Machining: understand cutting tools, feeds, speeds, CNC offsets and chip-control fundamentals before operating equipment.
  • Quality: learn traceability, nonconformance reporting, root-cause analysis and the difference between inspection and process control.
  • Safety: follow lockout/tagout, chemical-handling, lifting and machine-guarding rules without shortcuts.

Use apprenticeships and paid training strategically

Apprenticeships combine classroom instruction with supervised production work, so ask exactly which qualification and hands-on hours you will receive. Rolls-Royce describes Level 3 engineering apprenticeships with practical work such as fitting, welding and maintenance at Apprenticeships & School Leavers. Its Switch programme is a 4-to-4.5-year career-change route open to people from any background, training toward Aerospace Fitter or Machinist roles and a Level 3 apprenticeship qualification; details such as pay, locations and intake dates are employer-specific at Switch into Aerospace Engineering.

GE Aerospace’s UK Apprenticeships page illustrates manufacturing and engineering pathways connected with production, quality, design, materials and processes, tooling and nondestructive testing, including an engine-overhaul site in Wales. Those locations and qualification frameworks are UK-specific and can change with each vacancy.

Compare the main entry routes

Route Best fit Typical formal gate How experience is gained Important check
FAA-certificated AMTS U.S. engine or aircraft maintenance AMTS completion, FAA eligibility and written, oral and practical tests Structured laboratory and shop work; confirm what counts toward eligibility Most programs take about 18–24 months, but schedules and ratings vary
Supervised maintenance OJT People already working around aircraft maintenance 18 months for one rating or 30 concurrent months for both, plus tests Employer tasks documented and validated by certificated mechanics Training time alone is not qualifying experience
Eligible military pathway Veterans with relevant aircraft-maintenance specialties FAA review of specialty, duties and evidence, plus tests Military maintenance work and accepted records Service by itself does not guarantee eligibility
Manufacturing entry job Factory production, assembly, inspection or test Posting-specific; an FAA A&P is not universal Paid employer training and supervised production work may be available Check shift, site, training bond and progression terms
Technical apprenticeship School leavers or career changers entering skilled factory work Employer and country-specific qualification framework Paid work combined with formal instruction Verify the credential level, duration and recognized scope
Engineering degree route Manufacturing, process, materials or design engineering Usually a relevant technical degree; posting-specific experience Projects, internships, laboratory work and early-career roles Read the actual discipline and software requirements

A step-by-step plan for a maintenance career

  1. Choose the rating. If engines are your target, plan around Powerplant; decide whether the wider A&P will improve the jobs you want.
  2. Check your eligibility. Confirm age, English ability and whether an AMTS, civilian OJT or military record is the most realistic route.
  3. Select an FAA-certificated school or qualifying employer. Ask which ratings the program supports, how practical work is supervised and what graduates must do after completion.
  4. Create your evidence system on day one. Use a consistent log with task, date, time, aircraft or component, reference data and validator.
  5. Build fundamentals before test preparation. Study the FAA standards, electrical and mechanical principles, turbine-engine construction, inspection methods, regulations and human factors.
  6. Schedule testing only after an eligibility review. Passing a knowledge test does not replace the oral and practical examinations or the experience requirement.
  7. Target roles that expand your scope. Seek line or base maintenance, engine-shop, component-repair, inspection and overhaul work that lets you accumulate documented tasks.
  8. Keep records after certification. Employers and regulators still expect accurate maintenance records, recurrent training and work within your authorization.

A step-by-step plan for a manufacturing career

  1. Pick a job family. Decide whether you prefer hands-on assembly, machining, inspection, testing, quality, nondestructive testing or process engineering.
  2. Map the posting’s requirements. Separate must-have credentials from preferred skills such as CNC, metrology, blueprint reading or robotics.
  3. Close the largest skills gap. Use a community-college certificate, technical course, maker project, prior industrial role or employer-paid training to gain measurable practice.
  4. Demonstrate controlled work. Bring examples of inspection records, a machining project, a process-improvement exercise or a safety qualification; protect confidential employer data.
  5. Apply to apprenticeships and entry-level roles together. Apprenticeships can provide a recognized qualification, while direct hiring may provide faster site access and paid training.
  6. Ask about progression. Find out how an assembler can move into senior technician, inspector, quality, tooling, maintenance or manufacturing-engineering support.
  7. Learn the site’s special processes. Aerospace factories may use tightly controlled heat treatment, coatings, welding, composites, nondestructive testing and traceability systems; training must be site-specific.

How to choose between routes

Credential versus immediate employment

An AMTS gives a defined route toward FAA testing but requires a substantial school commitment. OJT can let you earn while learning, yet weak records can leave you short of qualifying evidence. A manufacturing job may offer paid training without an aviation license, but advancement depends on the plant’s qualification system.

Location and work conditions

Maintenance jobs cluster around airports, airline bases and repair stations. Manufacturing jobs are tied to particular plants and may require relocation. Compare commute, shift premiums, overtime expectations, temperature, noise, protective equipment and the physical requirements of lifting or prolonged standing.

Long-term progression

  • Maintenance: Powerplant mechanic, A&P mechanic, engine-shop specialist, inspector, lead technician, quality auditor or maintenance supervisor.
  • Manufacturing: assembler or machinist, senior technician, inspector, nondestructive testing specialist, quality engineer, tooling or process technician, manufacturing engineer or production supervisor.
  • Cross-over: A maintenance mechanic with strong records and component knowledge can move toward overhaul, quality or manufacturing support; a factory technician can move toward field service or maintenance if the required credential and experience are obtained.

Pay and employment outlook: interpret the numbers correctly

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $79,870 for aircraft mechanics and service technicians in May 2025. It projects 5% employment growth from 2025 through 2035 for that occupation and about 13,100 openings per year during 2025–2035 for the broader combined group of aircraft and avionics equipment mechanics and technicians. The figures are U.S. occupation-level context: they do not isolate engine-only maintenance, factory production, apprenticeships, overtime, location premiums or individual employers. See Aircraft and Avionics Equipment Mechanics and Technicians for the definitions and current tables.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Confusing a Powerplant rating with an engineering degree: the FAA rating authorizes specified maintenance privileges; it does not qualify you for every design or manufacturing-engineering job.
  • Assuming A&P is mandatory in a factory: follow the posting and ask whether the role is production, maintenance, inspection or engineering.
  • Logging attendance instead of work: record actual qualifying tasks, time and validation, not just the months you were employed.
  • Buying a logbook and treating it as proof: a notebook format cannot substitute for credible task evidence and mechanic validation.
  • Counting classroom time as practical experience: confirm with FAA guidance what work is accepted before relying on it.
  • Ignoring geography: FAA rules are U.S.-specific, while apprenticeship qualifications and employer requirements differ by country and site.
  • Applying without safety and quality examples: aerospace employers need evidence that you follow procedures even when production pressure rises.
  • Failing to verify current vacancies: program locations, dates, pay and entry criteria change; read the live posting before relocating or resigning.

Questions to ask an employer or school

  • Which rating, certificate, degree or internal qualification is required on the first day?
  • Does the role provide supervised work that can count toward an FAA experience requirement?
  • Who validates maintenance tasks, and what records will I receive?
  • What are the normal shifts, noise controls, physical demands and overtime patterns?
  • Which tools, metrology equipment, software or special processes will I learn?
  • What is the next role after successful completion, and how is readiness assessed?
  • For an apprenticeship, what qualification is awarded, who accredits it and what happens if the intake or site changes?

Bottom line

For U.S. engine maintenance, build toward the FAA Powerplant rating—often A&P—through an AMTS, documented qualifying experience or an eligible military route, then pass all required tests. For manufacturing, target the specific factory job family and develop mechanical, measurement, blueprint, CNC, robotics, safety and quality skills that the posting values. In either track, choose a route that gives you verifiable hands-on work, keep precise records and confirm current, location-specific requirements before committing.
