You can build a capable gaming setup around devices you already own: try games locally on a computer, stream supported games from a cloud service, or use Steam Remote Play if a gaming PC is already at home. First check that your chosen games, devices, and internet connection work with the option you want; buy only what is genuinely missing.
Choose the setup that fits your devices
Start by listing your computer, phone, tablet, TV, controllers, and internet options. Then match them to one of these three ways to play.
Play on your existing computer
An older or basic laptop may handle some lighter, older, or free-to-play games locally. Look up the system requirements for each specific game and compare them with your computer’s hardware and operating system. A general label such as “gaming laptop” is not a substitute for checking requirements, and performance varies by game and device.

With cloud gaming, a remote computer runs the game while your device handles the picture and your inputs. This can make a compatible phone, tablet, computer, or TV useful for games it could not run itself. The service must support both your device and the game, and a fast, stable connection matters.
#1 Best Overall
GeForce NOW requires you to own or purchase supported games from participating stores, though it also supports hundreds of free-to-play games. A subscription to a cloud service does not automatically give you a general license to every game in its catalog. Check the exact title and any required store account before signing up. Xbox Cloud Gaming offers selected free-to-play games, most titles in the Game Pass library, and selected cloud-playable games users own or buy. What is available depends on the game, region, plan, and platform; Xbox says availability and features can change over time. Check the current service details for your location and device. Stream from a gaming PC you already own
If there is a gaming PC in your home, Steam Remote Play or Steam Link can stream games from that host to another device or screen. This is useful when the PC can run the game but you want to play from a TV or another room. The host still has to be powerful enough to run the game and available while you play. Steam describes Steam Link as a way to stream games from your Steam Library on a PC to a TV in your home. Steam Link

Check the game, device, and connection before paying
Use this checklist for whichever route you are considering:
Rank #3
- Game access: Confirm the exact title is available through the service or can run locally. For cloud services, verify whether you must own the game, buy it separately, or have a particular subscription.
- Device support: Check the current supported-device list and feature details for your computer, phone, tablet, or TV. Support can differ by service and device.
- Region and plan: Confirm the service and the game are available where you live, and identify which plan or account is required.
- Controls: Check whether the game works well with a controller. Some games are better with a keyboard and mouse, and device-specific controller support can vary.
- Connection where you play: Test the network in the room where you plan to use the setup. A result beside the router may not reflect Wi-Fi quality elsewhere.
Compare cloud-gaming connection guidance
The figures below are providers’ published connection guidance, not guarantees of image quality or a substitute for low latency and a stable connection.
| Service | Published connection guidance | Additional advice |
|---|---|---|
| GeForce NOW | 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 FPS; 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 FPS; 35 Mbps for QHD or UW QHD at 120 FPS; 45 Mbps for 4K at 120 FPS; 55 Mbps for QHD or FHD at 240 or 360 FPS; and 65 Mbps for 5K at 120 FPS. NVIDIA system requirements, accessed in 2026. | NVIDIA recommends wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and latency below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center. GeForce NOW system requirements |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | 10 Mbps minimum; some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. Xbox service page, accessed in 2026. | Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Xbox Cloud Gaming |
Mbps describes connection bandwidth; latency measures how long inputs and data take to travel. Meeting a speed figure alone does not ensure responsive play. Wi-Fi interference, congestion, and the route to the service can still affect the experience.

Set up with what you have, then fill only real gaps
- Inventory your equipment. Note which screens and computers you have, whether a controller connects over USB or Bluetooth, and whether a gaming PC is available as a host.
- Pick a game and check its route. For local play, compare the game’s requirements with your computer. For cloud play, check the title, device, region, plan, and ownership requirements on the service’s current pages.
- Test the connection at your play location. Compare the result with the chosen service’s guidance. For GeForce NOW, its figures are tied to particular resolutions and frame rates; they are not a performance guarantee. Try a wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi if available.
- Try the setup before shopping. Launch a game with the controller or keyboard and mouse you already have. If using Steam Remote Play, make sure the host PC can run the title and is available during play.
- Buy only what the test shows you lack. If you need one accessory, a compatible controller may be useful. NVIDIA lists Xbox controllers and Sony PS5 DualSense and DualShock 4 controllers among supported gamepads on applicable devices; verify support for your specific client. Consider an Ethernet cable or router change only if the existing connection is inadequate.
Keep recurring costs and practical limits in view
A low-cost setup is not automatically a free one. Cloud gaming may involve a recurring subscription, separately purchased games, or both. A service’s catalog and supported devices can change, and the best option depends on the games you want and the equipment you already own. Compare those ongoing costs with using your current computer locally or streaming from a home gaming PC before committing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsController support and the experience of using a TV or phone are also device-specific. Confirm the exact model and service combination rather than assuming that an app or accessory works everywhere.
