The cheapest reliable way to build a usable MTG Arena deck is to finish the tutorial, play the starter decks, choose one format, and improve a deck built from cards you already own. Use the deck editor to identify missing cards, test a low-cost version, and spend wildcards only when a missing card fills a role your games have exposed. This approach avoids wasting scarce rare and mythic wildcards on an imported list you have not yet learned to play.
What “budget” means in MTG Arena
MTG Arena is a digital version of Magic: The Gathering available on desktop and mobile. Wizards of the Coast says you can start playing for free. Your Arena collection, decks and wildcards are digital; buying paper cards or tabletop products does not add those cards to your Arena account.
Because there is no physical card cost, the scarce resources for a new player are time, the cards already in the collection and especially wildcards. A wildcard can be exchanged for a card of the same rarity. Common and uncommon wildcards are usually easier to replace than rare and mythic rare wildcards, so a budget process should protect the higher-rarity ones until you know exactly what your deck needs.

“Budget” does not mean that every deck will have the same cost or that a low-wildcard deck will automatically be competitive. The cost depends on which starter cards you received, which sets you opened, the format you select and the specific cards your plan requires. The goal is a coherent, legal deck that teaches you something in every game while using as few irreversible crafts as practical.

Finish the tutorial and use the starter decks first
Complete Arena’s new-player tutorial and play the starter decks before crafting. The onboarding experience supplies decks and teaches the client’s basic actions, and the starter lists give you a pool of cards that can be used immediately.
Do not delete or disassemble starter decks while you are still learning. Instead, duplicate a list or create a new version in the deck editor. Keeping the originals gives you a known legal baseline and lets you compare changes without losing the starting point.
Make an inventory before spending anything
- Open the collection and note the colors, card types and themes represented by your starter decks.
- Look for cards you own in multiple copies; those are the easiest foundations for a first deck.
- Separate cards you understand from cards whose text or role is still unclear. Familiar cards make early testing easier.
- Keep every wildcard until a specific missing card has survived the testing process described below.
Choose a format before choosing cards
Format determines which cards the deck editor accepts, how long your cards remain legal and how large the surrounding card pool is. Select the format in the client first; Arena filters deck construction and legality for that selection.

Standard is often a practical first choice because starter and recently acquired cards are more likely to fit its current pool, but that is a starting recommendation rather than a universal cost guarantee. Historic may make sense if most of your useful cards are older and you want to keep using them. Compare the format’s current legality with your actual collection rather than choosing from a general reputation.
Do not treat format announcements as permanent rules
Format availability and legality can change. Wizards’ September 11, 2026 “State of the Formats” update announced that Alchemy is planned to retire with the next Standard rotation in early 2027. That is a dated announcement, not a reason to assume the client’s future format list. Verify the currently available formats, legal sets and bans in Arena when you build and whenever you return after a break.
Write the deck’s plan in one sentence
Before selecting individual cards, describe what the deck is trying to do in one sentence. For example: “Play inexpensive creatures and keep attacking,” or “Defend until I can win with a small number of powerful spells.” These are planning examples, not tested prescriptions or guaranteed winning strategies.
A one-sentence plan gives every card a job. When you consider a card, ask whether it advances the sentence, protects it or solves a problem the deck cannot otherwise handle. Cards that are individually interesting but do none of those things are common sources of an unfocused beginner list.

Use a starter deck as the shell
Start with the starter deck that already resembles your sentence. Keep the cards that perform the primary action and remove cards that pull the deck toward a different plan. If two starter themes appeal to you, build and test them separately rather than mixing every attractive card into one large pile.
For a first build, consistency is more valuable than novelty. A deck that repeatedly presents the same kind of decision will teach you how its cards work and make weaknesses easier to identify.
Build the first legal version in Arena’s deck editor
The editor shows whether a deck is legal for the selected format and highlights cards that are missing from your collection. Use that feedback before crafting.
- Select the format. Create a deck and choose Standard, Historic or the format you intend to play. Changing the format later can make cards illegal, so make this choice before finalizing the list.
- Copy or import only as a starting point. You can edit a starter list, assemble a list from your collection or import a list. Importing does not mean you should immediately craft every missing card.
- Read the missing-card indicators. The client marks cards you do not own. Record each missing card’s rarity and how many copies the proposed list requires.
- Replace unavailable cards temporarily. Use cards from your collection that perform a similar job, even if they are less efficient. The purpose is to make a playable test deck without spending a wildcard.
- Meet the size requirement. For Standard and Historic, keep at least 60 cards in the main deck. Add a sideboard only when the match mode and your experience call for one; best-of-one Historic has a seven-card sideboard limit.
- Save a version before changes. Name the deck with its plan and version, such as “Red attack test 1.” Keeping versions makes it possible to identify which change helped or hurt.
Why “import everything and craft all” is a poor default
An imported deck can contain many cards you do not own. Crafting every missing card before playing gives you no evidence that the list suits your collection, preferred format or play style. It can also consume rare and mythic wildcards on cards that later prove unnecessary when you discover that the deck’s real problem is its curve, mana or game plan.

Importing is useful for examining a structure or learning how the editor handles a list. Treat the missing-card display as a shopping list to evaluate, not an instruction to buy the whole list.
Use wildcards deliberately
Wildcards redeem for cards of their matching rarity. Arena’s official guidance describes checking missing cards in an imported deck and crafting those cards from the editor. The practical sequence is:
- Build and save the deck without crafting.
- Play the low-cost version until you can describe a specific weakness.
- Identify the card that would address that weakness and confirm that it supports the one-sentence plan.
- Check the card’s rarity and the number of copies required.
- Craft the smallest number of copies that lets you test the role.
- Play again before crafting additional copies.
This is a decision process, not a universal optimal craft order. The official sources do not establish a fixed wildcard budget, a guaranteed win rate or one correct list for every collection.

Prioritize roles rather than card names
When several missing cards compete for a rare wildcard, rank them by role:

- Interaction: cards that answer the opposing permanent or spell that repeatedly stops your plan.
- Consistency tools: cards that help you find the right kind of card or make awkward draws less common.
- Upgrades: stronger versions of cards that already work in your test build.
Test the first three roles before spending on an upgrade. A powerful card that does not solve a problem you have actually observed is a lower-priority craft than a modest card that makes the deck function.
Play-test before you optimize
Use the low-cost list in actual games and take short notes after each match. You do not need a formal statistical study; you need repeatable observations about what happens when the deck follows or fails its plan.
Record these symptoms
- You regularly have cards you cannot cast because the deck does not produce the right resources.
- Your opening hand contains too many expensive cards or too few actions you can use early.
- You run out of useful plays while the opponent still has a full hand.
- You draw cards that are individually strong but unrelated to the plan.
- The same opposing effect stops you repeatedly.
- You lose while holding a missing card that would have solved a clearly identified role.
After several games, change one category at a time. First remove cards that do not advance the plan, then improve the most common functional problem, and only then consider higher-rarity upgrades. Changing many cards at once makes it impossible to tell which decision mattered.
Test in the match mode you intend to play
Best-of-one and best-of-three present different deck-building questions. Best-of-three uses a sideboard of up to 15 cards in Standard and Historic, while Historic best-of-one permits seven sideboard cards. If you mostly play best-of-one, focus your initial testing on the main deck and do not spend wildcards on sideboard cards you will not use. If you move to best-of-three, learn which opposing strategies cause problems before filling the sideboard.
Keep the mana and card roles coherent
Even without expensive cards, a deck must be able to cast its spells and take meaningful actions. Use the editor’s visual list and your game notes to find cards that compete for the same role or cannot be played together reliably.
Stay focused on a small number of colors
A starter-based budget deck is easier to assemble when it concentrates on the colors represented by your owned cards. Adding another color can create access to useful effects, but it also increases the chance that a hand contains spells you cannot cast on time. Make that trade only when the added color clearly supports the plan and you have enough appropriate resources in your collection.

Prefer cards that are useful in more than one situation
Early in your Arena collection, flexible cards reduce the number of specialized crafts you need. A card that can advance your plan in one game and answer a problem in another is often more useful for learning than a narrow card that is powerful only in a particular matchup. This is deck-building guidance, not a claim that flexibility always beats raw power.

Standard rotates, so a card that is legal today may leave the format later. Before crafting a rare or mythic for Standard, look at its current legality and consider how long you expect to play the deck. Do not assume that a card’s presence in a recent list means it will remain legal indefinitely.

When returning after a long break, do not immediately rebuild from memory. Confirm the format, inspect your collection, open the deck editor and let its legality display identify cards that need replacement.
Common budget mistakes and fixes
Crafting before choosing a format
Symptom: You spend wildcards on cards that are not legal in the queue you want to play.
Fix: Select the format first and use the editor’s legality indicator before crafting.
Building a 100-card pile because the deck feels incomplete
Symptom: The deck contains every card you own in the chosen colors, so the key cards appear infrequently.

Fix: Keep the main deck at the format minimum and remove cards that do not support the one-sentence plan. For Standard and Historic, that minimum is 60 cards.
Spending rare wildcards on sideboard cards for best-of-one
Symptom: Your collection loses rare cards that never appear in your games.
Fix: Match sideboard spending to your actual match mode. Historic best-of-one has a seven-card sideboard limit; best-of-three uses the larger sideboard allowance.
Copying a list without understanding its roles
Symptom: The imported deck looks impressive but produces hands you cannot explain or play.
Fix: Replace missing cards with owned cards, learn the deck’s plan, and craft only after a repeated problem points to a specific role.
Assuming “nonrotating” means “cheap”
Symptom: Historic appears attractive because cards remain legal, but the list requires many older rare and mythic cards.
Fix: Compare the proposed deck with your actual collection. Historic preserves access to older cards; it does not guarantee a lower wildcard cost.

- Learn: Finish the tutorial and play the starter decks.
- Choose: Select a format after checking its current legality and rotation status.
- Define: Write one sentence describing how the deck wins or creates advantage.
- Assemble: Start from a starter list or cards you own, keeping the main deck legal.
- Inspect: Use the editor to identify missing cards and their rarities.
- Substitute: Fill gaps with owned cards that perform similar jobs.
- Test: Play enough games to identify recurring functional problems.
- Craft: Spend a wildcard only on a missing card that addresses an observed problem.
- Re-test: Change one role at a time and keep the version that improves the deck’s consistency for your plan.
- Maintain: Recheck legality after rotations, bans, releases and format announcements.
This cycle turns each wildcard into an informed decision instead of a guess. It also gives you a deck you can explain, modify and continue learning with, even when the list is not built from the newest competitive cards.
