A balanced loadout in Final Fantasy VII Remake is a flexible baseline, not one permanent list: keep healing and Assess available, distribute Fire, Blizzard, Thunder and Wind instead of duplicating one spell everywhere, and reserve linked slots for Elemental combinations that match the current enemy. Then fit each character’s materia to the weapon, armor, role and encounter.
What a balanced materia loadout actually does
Materia fitted to weapons and armor supplies spells, abilities, summons and passive effects. Linked slots let one materia alter the way another works. The most important example is Elemental: linked to an elemental spell on a weapon, it can add that element to attacks; linked on armor, it can provide resistance to that element. The same pair therefore has an offensive or defensive job depending on where you install it. Square Enix’s system overview explains these interactions.

- At least one reliable way to restore HP, with Healing on two characters early so a single knockout does not remove all recovery.
- Access to Assess so you can identify an enemy’s characteristics, resistances and weaknesses before committing to an element.
- Enough elemental coverage that the party is not locked into one spell type.
- At least one character who can exploit the party’s linked slots for an offensive Elemental setup, while another can use armor resistance when the matchup calls for it.
- Materia that suits the character you actually control and the weapon abilities you are trying to learn.
These priorities come before maximizing one character’s damage. A loadout that looks powerful on a target dummy can become a liability if its weapon element heals or is resisted by the next boss.

Check your equipment before assigning materia
- Choose the weapon and armor first. Open the equipment menu, select the item, and inspect its total slots and which slots are linked. Weapon upgrades can increase slot capacity, so revisit assignments after upgrading. PlayStation Blog’s gameplay overview notes that weapon upgrades can add materia slots.
- Mark the linked pairs. A connected pair is the place for combinations such as Elemental plus Fire, Blizzard, Thunder or Wind, or Magnify plus Healing. Unlinked slots still hold useful standalone materia, but they cannot create those paired effects.
- Keep a recovery carrier in the active party. Healing should remain available even when you are experimenting with offensive builds. Early on, give it to at least two members rather than putting every recovery option on one person.
- Equip Assess before exploring an unfamiliar area. Use it on new enemy types, read the result, then decide whether an element belongs on a weapon, armor or neither.
- Review growth goals. Materia levels through use, and weapon abilities gain proficiency when you use them. If a weapon ability is important to your plan, use it regularly instead of leaving the weapon equipped only for its statistics.
Do not fill every linked pair automatically. A linked slot is valuable only when the effect helps the fight you are about to enter.
A repeatable loadout process for any chapter
1. Identify the encounter
Before a boss, side quest or Shinra facility, ask what you know about the enemies and which characters will be present. If you have no information, leave the weapon neutral and plan to Assess the first unfamiliar target rather than guessing.
2. Establish the non-negotiables
Place Healing on two party members when possible and keep Assess on someone who will reliably enter combat. If the party is short on slots, remove a luxury offensive materia before removing both recovery and identification tools.
Recommended Free Tools
3. Spread the four basic elements
Distribute Fire, Blizzard, Thunder and Wind across the party instead of putting the same spell on everyone by default. This gives the group more ways to exploit weaknesses and leaves linked slots available for a deliberate Elemental setup. The early-game recommendation to spread these four spells comes from GameSpot’s April 28, 2020 loadout guide.
4. Decide whether Elemental belongs on a weapon or armor
When Assess identifies a weakness, link Elemental to that spell on a weapon for an offensive benefit. If the enemy’s element is dangerous, link the pair on armor for resistance instead. Never leave an unsuitable weapon element in place merely because the pair is leveled; an enemy that resists or benefits from that element can turn the setup against you.
5. Match the package to the character you control
A close-range fighter benefits from effects that reward staying in melee, a ranged fighter can carry coverage without standing beside the target, and a magic-focused character can make better use of spell and Magnify slots. These are role tendencies, not permanent restrictions.
6. Equip summons only when the fight supports them
In qualifying battles, the summon gauge fills and the summon acts automatically after being called; you can issue commands that cost ATB. Equip summon materia when that timing and extra damage will help, rather than consuming a precious slot in a fight where a different utility effect matters more. Square Enix describes the summon gauge and command system.

The following are adaptable starting points. They are not a universal best-in-slot list: your available slots, current weapon upgrades, enemy information and preferred control style should decide the final arrangement.

Cloud: melee pressure with a conditional Elemental weapon
Cloud’s close-range sword role makes him a natural carrier for a physical Elemental weapon when the matchup is confirmed. Link Elemental to the appropriate spell only after Assess or reliable encounter information identifies the target’s weakness. If the enemy resists that element or benefits from it, remove the pair or move the elemental plan to another character.
- Core: Assess or Healing, depending on who else is carrying each utility.
- Offense: Deadly Dodge is a useful fit for his aggressive movement and is specifically recommended for him by GameSpot.
- Linked option: Elemental plus the weakness-matching spell on the weapon.
- Swap rule: On an unknown or mixed encounter, keep the weapon neutral and use ordinary attacks while you identify targets.
Cloud does not need to monopolize Elemental. Barret can carry the pair when ranged pressure or a different slot layout makes that safer.
Barret: ranged coverage and dependable utility
Barret’s ranged combat role lets him contribute while other characters close the distance. Give him an elemental spell that the rest of the party lacks, or use him as the Elemental carrier when Cloud’s weapon slots are committed elsewhere. Square Enix describes Barret as effective at range; GameSpot identifies him as an alternative Elemental carrier.
- Core: Healing when he is one of the two recovery carriers; otherwise preserve a free slot for the element your current party lacks.
- Elemental option: Link Elemental to a weapon only for a favorable matchup. A neutral weapon is safer for a long sequence of unknown enemies.
- Utility: Keep Assess on Barret if he is the character you routinely open fights with and another member needs the damage slots.
- Swap rule: Move the element between Barret and Cloud according to linked-slot availability and who will spend ATB on spells.
Tifa: use the flexible slot without breaking party coverage
Tifa’s final package should fill the gap left by Cloud, Barret and Aerith rather than duplicate it. Start by checking whether the party already has two Healing materia, Assess and all four basic elements. If those requirements are covered, use Tifa’s available slots for the encounter’s missing damage or defensive effect; if they are not, make her the carrier of the missing utility.
- When recovery is thin: assign Healing so the party still has two independent healers after a knockout.
- When an element is missing: give her the unrepresented spell and move it when Assess reveals a different weakness.
- When the party is already covered: reserve linked slots for the element or armor resistance the next fight demands instead of copying another character’s spell.
- When learning weapon abilities: use the abilities you want to master; proficiency rises through use, so a materia plan should not prevent you from practicing them.
This makes Tifa a deliberate flex position: she can preserve redundancy, add missing coverage or carry the defensive half of an Elemental plan without forcing one fixed build onto every chapter.
Aerith: magic, party healing and Magnify
Aerith’s magic-oriented role makes her a strong home for offensive spells, Healing and Magnify. GameSpot recommends considering Magnify on her and notes that her Pray materia can provide a low-level party heal. Pray is useful when you need group recovery without spending MP, but it should not be treated as a replacement for keeping Healing available on the team.
- Core recovery: Healing for reliable spell-based restoration, with Pray as an additional low-level party-heal option when available.
- Party healing: Link Magnify to Healing when the encounter regularly damages several party members. This trades some single-target efficiency for broader coverage.
- Offense: Carry the elemental spell that the rest of the party lacks, or link Elemental to a weapon only when the matchup and her slot layout justify it.
- Swap rule: In a fight where group damage is low but a single target has a clear weakness, separate Magnify from Healing and use a focused spell instead.
Because Aerith is a powerful magic user, it is tempting to place every spell on her. Resist that habit: distributing elements lets another character act immediately when Aerith is pressured, interrupted or unavailable.

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE adds Episode INTERmission, whose main character is Yuffie. The core-party recommendations above should not be presented as a tested, Yuffie-specific build. Instead, apply the same decision sequence to her current weapon and armor: preserve Healing and Assess coverage across the active party, assign an unrepresented element, inspect linked slots, and use Elemental offensively or defensively only after checking the encounter.

Elemental materia: weapon or armor?
| Placement | Link | Result | Use it when | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Elemental + Fire, Blizzard, Thunder or Wind | Attacks gain the linked element | Assess shows that the target is weak to that element | A resistant or element-absorbing enemy can reduce damage or make the effect harmful |
| Armor | Elemental + the incoming element | Resistance to that element | The fight repeatedly uses a known elemental attack | You spend a linked pair on defense when the encounter is not element-focused |
The choice is situational, not a permanent ranking. For a boss whose weakness is clear and whose attacks are mostly physical, a weapon link may produce more value. For a battle built around repeated elemental damage, armor resistance can prevent more danger than an offensive bonus would remove.
How to use Assess without wasting a slot
Assess reports an enemy’s characteristics, resistances and weaknesses, making it the most direct way to choose spells and Elemental assignments. The PlayStation Blog’s November 25, 2019 feature describes using Assess to see those weaknesses and resistances.
- Equip Assess before entering an area with unfamiliar enemies.
- Use it on the first version of each new enemy, preferably before spending ATB on expensive spells.
- Read whether the target is weak, resistant or otherwise affected by an element.
- Apply the result to the whole loadout: choose a weapon link for a weakness, armor resistance for a dangerous incoming element, or no Elemental link when neither helps.
- Recheck elite variants and bosses. A familiar enemy name does not guarantee an identical matchup.
Assess is information, not an instruction to cast immediately. If the target is resistant to every element you have equipped, save ATB for physical pressure, stagger-building abilities or healing.
Early-game elemental coverage and encounter examples
For early party coverage, GameSpot recommends distributing Fire, Blizzard, Thunder and Wind. Its examples call out Fire against human enemies and Thunder against many robots in early Shinra facilities. Treat those as early-play recommendations, not universal weakness rules: use Assess whenever the enemy or chapter changes.
| Situation | Practical assignment | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Early human opponents | Keep Fire available on one character and preserve a second character’s recovery role | Fire is specifically highlighted as useful against human enemies in the early-game recommendation |
| Robots in early Shinra facilities | Keep Thunder available, then confirm the target with Assess | Thunder is specifically called out for many of those robots |
| Mixed or unknown group | Spread the four elements and leave the weapon neutral until the first Assess result | It avoids locking the party into a harmful weapon element |
Healing, Magnify and party redundancy
Healing redundancy is more important than squeezing one extra offensive materia into every slot. With Healing on two characters early, a knockout or silence effect does not remove the party’s only recovery source. When Aerith is present, consider her Pray materia for a low-level party heal and Magnify linked with Healing when several allies need restoration at once.
Magnify should follow the fight, not remain permanently attached. Broad healing is valuable against repeated area damage; focused Healing is more efficient when only one character is hurt. If Magnify is consuming the only linked pair that could provide a needed Elemental interaction, move it before the encounter rather than accepting a weaker matchup.

Materia that never gets used is not helping the current party or building toward its next level. Prioritize effects you actually cast or trigger, then rotate less-used materia during safe encounters if you want to develop it. Weapon abilities work similarly: each weapon has unique abilities that increase in proficiency the more they are used. PlayStation Blog describes this proficiency system.

Comparing two candidate loadouts
When two arrangements both look viable, compare them on the same six axes:
- Elemental coverage: Does the party collectively retain Fire, Blizzard, Thunder and Wind where they are available?
- Linked-slot value: Are the connected pairs producing an effect you expect to use in this encounter?
- Healing redundancy: Can at least two characters still restore the party early in the game?
- Role fit: Does the package match who will be in range, who will cast and who you plan to control?
- Growth investment: Are the equipped materia and weapon abilities receiving enough use to justify their slots?
- Matchup safety: Is Elemental on the weapon because of a confirmed weakness, or on armor because of a known incoming element?
The stronger loadout is the one that answers the current encounter with fewer liabilities, not the one with the highest number of offensive icons.
Troubleshooting common loadout failures
“My elemental attacks are doing almost nothing.”
Use Assess and inspect whether the enemy resists or absorbs that element. Remove the weapon link, change the spell, or move Elemental to armor if defense is more useful.
“The party keeps running out of healing.”
Restore Healing to a second character, check whether Magnify is attached to the right fight, and consider Aerith’s Pray when available. Do not place every recovery option on one character.
“I cannot use the combination I planned.”
Inspect the equipment layout: the two materia must be in linked slots, not merely adjacent in the menu. If the weapon or armor lacks a connected pair, change equipment or use the effects separately.
“A new chapter invalidated my build.”
That is expected. Revisit slots after upgrades, Assess the new enemy types, redistribute the four elements and decide again whether the current Elemental link belongs on a weapon or armor.
“I am not learning a weapon ability.”
Use that weapon’s ability repeatedly in battles. Proficiency increases through use; leaving the weapon equipped while relying on another command does not advance the ability as quickly as practicing it.
