The best guest pawn is the one that repairs your party’s most important weakness. Check the Arisen’s vocation and your main pawn first, then hire a guest who adds the missing function: healing and support, a durable frontline, ranged reach, or protected spell damage. In most general-purpose parties, a Mage is the safest pick when nobody heals, while a Fighter or Warrior is the safest pick when nobody can hold enemy attention.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is built around a party of the Arisen and up to three Pawns. Your main Pawn is created alongside the Arisen, while two additional Pawns can be hired through in-game options or from other players over the internet. Because the guest-pawn slot is limited, hiring a second copy of your existing damage role often leaves a more serious gap untouched.

What “balanced” means in Dragon’s Dogma 2

There is no developer-published formula that declares one four-character composition to be the universal best party. A balanced group is one that can answer the problems your current area and vocation choices create. Think in terms of four functions rather than four labels:

  • Engagement and control: someone who can stand near dangerous enemies, draw pressure, stagger targets, and keep threats away from fragile allies.
  • Sustain and support: healing, weapon enchantments, defensive help, and other effects that keep the group effective over a long encounter.
  • Damage and reach: reliable ways to hit flying, elevated, distant, armored, or otherwise awkward targets.
  • Your own specialty: the role the Arisen is currently playing, which may be damage, control, support, mobility, or a hybrid.

The official PlayStation description emphasizes varying vocations and working together in the wild. It also describes Pawns as AI companions devoted to serving the Arisen. That means the practical question is not “Which vocation is strongest?” but “Which missing job is most likely to stop this party from succeeding?”

Start with the two roles you already have

Before entering the rift, write down the Arisen’s vocation and the main Pawn’s vocation. Then describe what those two characters actually do in one short phrase each. A vocation name alone can mislead: a damage-focused build may not provide the same protection or range as another build in the same broad category.

  1. Record the Arisen’s vocation. Note whether you are currently the party’s frontline, healer, ranged attacker, or caster.
  2. Record the main Pawn’s vocation. Identify its dependable contribution, such as shield work, bow damage, or support magic.
  3. Name the largest gap. Use a concrete phrase: “no healing,” “no durable frontline,” “no answer to high targets,” or “no protected burst magic.”
  4. Hire for that gap. Only consider a second damage vocation after the party can survive and control ordinary encounters.

This audit prevents a common mistake: adding another attractive damage dealer while the existing party has no way to recover health or keep enemies away from a spellcaster.

Guest-pawn vocations and the jobs they cover

Vocation What it contributes Hire it when… Watch for
Fighter Sword-and-shield melee, direct pressure, and protection through a shield. The party needs a straightforward frontline anchor that can stay close to enemies. It does not replace healing or long-range reach.
Warrior Durable two-handed melee, endurance against counterattacks, and powerful charged strikes. You need a tougher damage dealer to occupy the dangerous side of a fight. It is still a melee solution; elevated or distant targets may remain a problem.
Mage Healing, weapon enchantments, support effects, and magick attacks. No current Pawn reliably heals or supports the group. A Mage needs room and time to cast, so it benefits from a frontline that keeps enemies occupied.
Archer Long-range bow attacks that can target high positions and exploit weaknesses. Your party lacks reach or struggles against elevated and distant enemies. It does not provide the same sustain as a Mage or the same body-blocking presence as a Fighter.
Thief Rapid dagger attacks, mobility, climbing access, and item stealing. Frontline and healing are already covered and you want close-range pressure or mobility. It is a poor repair for a party that cannot survive sustained contact.
Sorcerer High-power magick with longer casting times. The group can protect a caster and you want burst magick rather than another melee character. Long casts are easier to interrupt when no one controls enemy attention.

Magick Archer, Mystic Spearhand, and Trickster are Arisen-only vocations in the official vocation descriptions. They are not guest-pawn options, so do not reserve a hired slot for one of them.

The fastest guest-pawn decision rule

Choose Mage when healing is missing

A Mage is the clearest corrective hire because its official description explicitly includes healing and enchantments that bolster party weapons. Pick one when neither the Arisen nor the main Pawn can reliably restore health or provide support. This is especially valuable for exploration, where repeated encounters can consume resources even if no single fight is overwhelming.

If you already have a dependable Mage, a second Mage may add redundant support. Consider whether the second Pawn supplies a different range or frontline presence before choosing it.

Choose Fighter or Warrior when the party cannot hold a line

A Fighter is the simple answer when you need a shield-bearing character to stay in the middle of a fight. A Warrior suits a party that wants greater durability combined with heavy charged strikes. Hire one when spellcasters are being interrupted, ranged characters are repeatedly surrounded, or the Arisen is spending every moment defending instead of performing their intended role.

Between the two, use Fighter for a more direct protective anchor and Warrior when you want the hired Pawn to add substantial two-handed pressure while enduring counterattacks. Neither choice supplies healing by itself, so check that another character can sustain the group.

Choose Archer when reach is the decisive gap

An Archer is the targeted fix for high ledges, flying enemies, and weak points that melee characters cannot reach consistently. This is a better hire than another close-range attacker when your party wins ground fights but loses time or health trying to force elevated targets down.

  • A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
  • Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Pawns create the feeling of a cooperative gameplay experience by offering unique characteristics, skills, and knowledge gained from their experiences with other Arisen.

Choose Thief after survival is already stable

Thief adds speed, mobility, climbing access, and item stealing. It is most useful when a Fighter or Warrior already controls the frontline and a Mage already covers sustain. Treat it as a pressure and utility choice, not as the default replacement for a missing healer or tank.

Choose Sorcerer when the party can buy casting time

Sorcerer provides high-power magick, but the official description also notes longer casting times. Hire one when another character can keep enemies occupied and the encounter rewards burst damage. If the party is constantly interrupted, a Sorcerer may look powerful on paper while contributing less than a role that can act immediately.

Four practical party templates

These are role-coverage patterns, not guaranteed optimal builds or official rankings. Adjust them for your equipment, skills, and the area you are entering.

Arisen Main Pawn Guest Pawn Why it works
Fighter or Warrior Damage dealer Mage The guest supplies healing and enchantment support while the Arisen anchors enemy attention.
Mage or Sorcerer Damage dealer Fighter or Warrior The guest creates frontline pressure and buys time for spellcasting.
Thief or Archer Mage Fighter or Warrior The guest closes the frontline gap while the Mage sustains the party.
Damage vocation Fighter or Warrior Mage The guest supplies sustain while the two damage-capable characters attack from different ranges or angles.

The templates are starting points. If your main Pawn already performs one of these jobs exceptionally well, replace that slot mentally and hire for whatever remains uncovered.

How to compare two otherwise viable guest Pawns

When two candidates fill the same broad role, compare them on the following five axes rather than choosing solely by level or appearance:

  1. Missing-role coverage: Does this Pawn solve the problem that caused you to open the rift?
  2. Range contrast: Does it attack from a range your current party lacks, or does it duplicate everyone else?
  3. Survivability: Can it remain active in the kind of encounter you are about to enter?
  4. Support value: Does it bring healing, enchantments, protection, or another effect that changes the party’s endurance?
  5. Command behavior: Is it likely to operate where you need it, rather than crowding the Arisen or standing in danger?

Inspect the Pawn’s visible equipment and skills for evidence that it actually supports the intended job. Then test the hire in one difficult encounter. If it repeatedly fails to survive, cannot operate at the required range, or duplicates an existing role, replace it rather than trying to force the composition to work.

A step-by-step hiring routine

  1. Check the current roster. Count the Arisen, main Pawn, and any existing guest Pawn. Remember that a full party contains the Arisen plus up to three Pawns, with two of those Pawns hired.
  2. State the failure condition. For example: “Our Mage is absent,” “our casters are being surrounded,” or “we cannot pressure enemies on high ground.”
  3. Search the rift for the matching vocation. Filter your choices mentally by the role, not by a generic idea of the strongest character.
  4. Inspect equipment and skills. Favor a build whose visible tools match the job you identified.
  5. Run a hard encounter. Observe whether the Pawn heals when needed, holds the intended area, reaches the target, or completes its casts safely.
  6. Replace it if the role is not delivered. A nominally correct vocation is not useful if the Pawn continually dies, refuses the relevant range, or duplicates a stronger existing contributor.

Use “Go!” to make the composition function

Party balance is not only about vocation selection. Capcom’s official manual says the Go! command tells Pawns to act independently. During combat it directs them to spread out; during exploration it prompts interaction with nearby chests, mechanisms, gathering spots, and similar objects in the indicated direction.

During exploration

Use Go! after a Pawn points out a lead or when you want it to investigate an indicated object. This can separate the group enough to prevent everyone from clustering around the Arisen and helps a guest perform its utility role instead of following passively.

Dragons Dogma 2 - PS5
  • The deep, explorable fantasy world of Dragon's Dogma... Dragon's Dogma is a narrative-driven, single-player action RPG that challenges players to shape their own experience—from the appearance of their Arisen, their vocation, and their party, to how they approach various situations and much more.

During combat

Use Go! when a guest Pawn is crowding the Arisen, standing in a dangerous area, or failing to approach an objective. The command’s documented spacing behavior is particularly useful when a Mage or Sorcerer needs room to cast, or when ranged characters need a clear line of fire.

Do not treat the command as a substitute for role coverage. Spreading out cannot create healing, and a well-positioned Archer still does not provide the frontline control of a Fighter or Warrior.

Pawn quests: useful bonus, poor reason to ignore a gap

Capcom’s manual says Pawn quests are assigned to the main Pawn at a riftstone. The owner can set an item or gold reward and can request an item from the Arisen who hires that Pawn. A guest Pawn’s quest objective can therefore add value to a hire you already want.

Do not let a tempting reward override a serious party weakness. Healing, frontline control, and adequate range determine whether the party can complete the current encounter; a quest reward is secondary. If two Pawns cover the same missing role equally well, the quest objective can be a sensible tie-breaker.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Hiring a third damage dealer by default

More damage does not compensate for a party that cannot recover health or keep enemies away from fragile characters. Replace the redundant attacker with a Mage or a frontline vocation until the group can survive ordinary fights consistently.

Taking two melee Pawns into a reach problem

If the party handles ground enemies but struggles with high or distant targets, add an Archer. A second close-range vocation will not solve the access problem.

Hiring Sorcerer without protection

Long casting times are a liability when enemies can interrupt the caster. Add or retain a Fighter or Warrior, use spacing, and reconsider Sorcerer only when the party can buy the necessary time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a Mage makes the entire party safe

Healing addresses sustain, not every threat. A Mage still benefits from someone who controls enemy attention, and the party may need a ranged answer for targets that melee characters cannot reach.

Keeping a guest who fails its assignment

Vocation labels do not guarantee useful behavior in every encounter. If the Pawn repeatedly dies, stays outside its effective range, or ignores the job you hired it for, dismiss it and test another candidate.

Ignoring the Arisen’s own vocation

The Arisen is not an empty slot. If you are already the party’s healer, a guest Mage may be less urgent than a frontline anchor or ranged attacker. Re-run the role audit whenever you change vocation.

Quick decisions for common party setups

  • Arisen Fighter, damage main Pawn: hire Mage unless another character already heals reliably; otherwise add a ranged specialist for the area’s threats.
  • Arisen Mage or Sorcerer, damage main Pawn: hire Fighter or Warrior so casting time is protected.
  • Arisen Thief or Archer, Mage main Pawn: hire Fighter or Warrior to keep pressure off the back line.
  • Arisen damage vocation, Fighter or Warrior main Pawn: hire Mage for sustain, then use the remaining damage roles to cover different ranges.
  • Arisen and main Pawn already cover frontline and healing: choose Archer for reach, Thief for mobility and close pressure, or Sorcerer for protected burst magick.

What to remember before you hire

The official PlayStation material establishes the party structure, vocation identities, and the value of diverse Pawns; it does not publish a universal best-party statistic. The reliable method is therefore functional: identify the Arisen’s and main Pawn’s jobs, name the largest missing function, and hire the guest Pawn that fills it. In a general-purpose party, Mage is the safest support correction, Fighter or Warrior the safest frontline correction, and Archer, Thief, or Sorcerer the specialist choices once survival and sustain are already covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hire a guest Magick Archer, Mystic Spearhand, or Trickster?

No. These vocations are described as available only to the Arisen, so guest-pawn selection should use the Pawn vocations such as Fighter, Warrior, Mage, Archer, Thief, or Sorcerer.

How many Pawns can be in the party at once?

The party can contain the Arisen and up to three Pawns. Your main Pawn is one of them, and two additional Pawns can be hired.

Should a Pawn quest ever decide which guest I hire?

Only as a tie-breaker between candidates that cover the same important role. Do not sacrifice healing, frontline control, or required range for a reward.

Is there an official best four-vocation party?

No universal ranking is established. Role coverage—engagement, sustain, reach, and your chosen Arisen role—is the defensible basis for building the group.
