Build a B2B website for AI search by doing the SEO fundamentals well: make important pages crawlable, indexable, internally linked, and genuinely useful to buyers. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode have no additional technical requirements beyond its normal Search eligibility framework. That does not guarantee crawling, indexing, ranking, or citation.
“Answer engine optimization” (AEO) and “generative engine optimization” (GEO) are industry terms, not separate Google-certified disciplines. For a B2B team, the practical work is clear site structure, accessible content, credible evidence, and measurement—not a special AI file or guaranteed-citation trick.
How do I optimize my website for AI search?
Start with the pages and information a buyer needs, then make those pages understandable to people and accessible to search systems. Google’s guidance for generative AI features says established SEO fundamentals remain relevant. It also says there are no additional technical requirements for AI features beyond the normal Search eligibility framework. Google’s AI features guidance and its SEO Starter Guide describe the practical baseline.
Use this sequence when building or rebuilding:
- Plan the information architecture. Identify the audiences, their problems, your offer, and the evidence buyers need. Organize pages so their relationships are clear, and use descriptive URLs. For a large site, topical directories can help communicate page relationships and make changes easier to manage. Avoid disruptive restructuring without a clear reason.
- Make important pages accessible. Check that robots.txt and any CDN or hosting rules do not block crawling. Keep essential information available as text, link key pages from other relevant pages, and ensure Google can access the resources needed to render them. Use a sitemap to communicate important URLs if helpful; some content-management systems generate one automatically, and Google does not require sitemap submission.
- Publish useful, distinctive content. Answer questions buyers actually have with specific explanations, implementation details, comparisons, product specifications, and evidence your business can substantiate. Use meaningful headings and clear sections to help people navigate.
- Apply structured data where it fits. Use valid markup only when it accurately describes visible page content and supports an appropriate search feature. It is not a special AI citation mechanism.
- Check and improve. Verify the site in Search Console, monitor the Web performance report, inspect important URLs, and investigate crawl or indexing issues. Pair search visibility data with business metrics such as conversions, while keeping those measures distinct.
Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI features says there is no ideal page length and no need to break every page into tiny chunks or rewrite it in a special AI style. Let the subject and the buyer’s task determine what a page needs to cover.

What should a B2B website include for SEO?
There is no Google-mandated B2B page checklist. Plan around the company’s offer and the questions buyers need answered. A useful foundation commonly includes:
- A home page that explains what the business does and who it serves.
- Product or service pages with concrete capabilities, specifications, and requirements.
- Industry or use-case pages where each has genuinely distinct information.
- Customer proof, such as substantiated case studies and verifiable examples.
- Company information that helps readers understand the people and expertise behind the offer.
- Practical support or resource content that addresses buyer and customer questions.
When appropriate, add named authors or subject-matter experts, transparent methodology, implementation details, and clear dates. These choices help readers assess credibility; they are not guarantees of rankings or citations.
For a new or changing site, review platform and governance needs alongside content plans. Ask whether the team can control crawl access, indexing directives, canonical URLs, and redirects; render important content for crawlers; create internal links and clear URLs; publish updates without unsustainable engineering work; and maintain accessibility, performance, localization, and migration processes as the site grows.

How do I get my B2B website cited in AI Overviews?
No responsible checklist can guarantee a citation. Google says that pages must meet its usual Search eligibility requirements, but meeting them does not guarantee that a page will be crawled, indexed, or served. Its guidance points back to useful, reliable, people-first content with unique information and real expertise.
Make a page worth using as a source: answer the buyer’s question directly, explain claims, show evidence, and keep technical or product details accurate. Link related pages so both readers and search systems can discover them. These are sound publishing practices, not a way to command inclusion in an AI Overview.
Google’s statements apply to Google Search features. They do not establish how every other AI assistant or answer product finds, ranks, or cites material.

Do I need llms.txt or special schema for AI search?
No, not for visibility in Google’s generative AI search features, according to Google’s current guidance. Google says it does not use llms.txt or other special AI files to improve Google Search visibility, and that such files neither help nor harm that visibility. It does not require special schema for generative AI search, either.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStructured data can still be useful when it accurately represents visible page content and qualifies the page for another documented rich result. Keep it aligned with what users can see; do not treat markup as a shortcut to an AI citation.
The same guidance says Google does not require content chunking, a special AI writing style, or inauthentic mentions. Other services may handle files or content differently, so Google’s position should not be generalized to every answer engine.

How can I measure AI search visibility?
Use Google Search Console for Google Search performance monitoring. Google’s AI features guidance says appearances in AI features are included in overall Search traffic and reported within the Web search type. Google also points to a generative AI performance report in Search Console. Check the current reports available to your property, monitor overall trends, inspect important URLs, and investigate crawl or indexing problems.
Analytics can help connect visits with business outcomes such as conversions, but visibility metrics alone do not prove revenue impact. Attribution requires its own analysis. Third-party dashboards may be useful for operational tracking, but Google warns that external tools do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems. Treat claims of proprietary insight or guaranteed placement cautiously, and verify advice against Google’s SEO guidance and its AI features documentation.
How to evaluate AEO and GEO advice
AEO and GEO can describe efforts to make content useful and discoverable in answer experiences, but the labels do not establish a separate Google ranking system. Be skeptical when a vendor promises special access, guaranteed citations, or a ranking advantage from a proprietary AI tactic. Ask what was measured, on which platform, under what conditions, and whether the claim is opinion or documented experience. Then compare it with Google’s public guidance and the actual needs of your site.
Google Search Central published its guide to optimizing for generative AI features on May 15, 2026, emphasizing useful, unique, non-commodity content and the continued importance of SEO fundamentals. The guide is about Google Search; it is not a universal specification for every AI product.
