To prove that a native HTML dialog traps and restores focus, open it with showModal() and test where keyboard focus actually goes: into the dialog, around its tab sequence, and back to the opener after it closes. Checking only that the dialog is open or has an ARIA attribute does not demonstrate those behaviors.

What the browser test needs to prove

This procedure applies to an HTML <dialog>, not JavaScript alert(), confirm(), or prompt() dialogs. A modal HTML dialog is opened with showModal(); show() opens it non-modally. W3C’s H102 technique uses showModal() and asks testers to verify focus behavior.

  • Entry: focus moves to the dialog or an appropriate focusable element inside it.
  • Containment: Tab and Shift+Tab stay within the modal dialog’s tab sequence, including wrapping at its ends.
  • Restoration: after closing, focus returns to the element that opened the dialog, provided that element remains available and no workflow-specific destination is more appropriate.

“Focus trap” here means containment in the page’s modal tab sequence, not confinement within the browser window. Browser chrome is outside the page’s dialog focus sequence. While a modal dialog is open, the outside page is treated as inert.

Choose a meaningful initial focus target

Focus should enter the dialog, but the best initial target depends on its content; it is not automatically the first button in every case. For a short confirmation, a control may be appropriate. For long or structurally complex content, initial focus may belong on a static heading or paragraph given tabindex="-1". If the dialog presents a potentially irreversible choice, focusing the least destructive action can help users avoid an accidental commitment.

The W3C H102 example uses a heading with tabindex="-1", connects the dialog to that heading with aria-labelledby, and places a close control inside a form method="dialog". The W3C modal dialog example illustrates context-sensitive initial focus and return behavior.

Set up the fixture

Use a page with an opener outside the dialog and at least two tabbable controls inside it. Include another page control outside the dialog so the test can detect a focus leak. Give the dialog an accessible name, preferably by referencing a visible title with aria-labelledby, or by using aria-label. Include a visible close button in the dialog’s tab sequence.

Open the dialog by keyboard-activating the opener, rather than calling showModal() directly from the test. This exercises the user-facing path and establishes the element whose focus should ordinarily be restored.

Run the focus-trap and restoration test

  1. Start from the opener. Focus the opener button and activate it with the keyboard. Confirm the dialog opens in modal mode through the application’s normal activation path.
  2. Check focus entry. Inspect the browser’s active element and assert it is the intended initial target inside the dialog. The target may be a control or a programmatically focusable static element.
  3. Check forward wrapping. Move focus to the last tabbable control in the dialog, send Tab, and assert that focus reaches the first tabbable control inside the dialog.
  4. Check reverse wrapping. Move focus to the first tabbable control, send Shift+Tab, and assert that focus reaches the last tabbable control inside the dialog.
  5. Check that focus does not escape. Continue tabbing through the dialog’s controls and verify that focus does not move to the outside page control while the modal remains open. W3C H102’s test procedure specifically asks testers to check that focus cannot move to elements of the primary document.
  6. Close the dialog. Exercise the visible close button or the supported Escape-key path.
  7. Check focus restoration. After the close completes, assert that the active element is the opener, if it remains in the page and is still the expected next destination.

These checks follow the keyboard model in W3C’s Dialog (Modal) Pattern: Tab advances through the dialog and wraps from last to first; Shift+Tab moves backward and wraps from first to last. The test should inspect the active element after the keyboard input, not infer success from the dialog’s open state, aria-modal, or visual styling alone.

Test focus restoration when the workflow changes

Returning focus to the opener is the normal expectation when that element still exists. If the dialog’s action removes the opener, or the workflow makes another destination the logical next step, test that destination instead. For example, after an item is deleted, the next relevant control may be a neighboring item or a page-level status target. Make the alternative explicit in the test so it verifies an intentional focus path rather than treating any post-close focus as success.

W3C H102 describes return to the invoking element assuming it remains on the page. The APG pattern likewise says focus returns to the invoker unless an exception applies. Neither rule means an application should try to focus a removed element.

Native and custom modal dialogs have different implementation burdens

Approach Focus containment and return Outside-page modality What the application must maintain
Native <dialog> opened with showModal() H102 describes browser-provided focus movement, containment, return, and Escape handling for the modal case. The outside page is inert while the modal dialog is open. Choose suitable initial focus, provide accessible naming and a usable close path, and test the behavior in supported browsers.
Custom ARIA dialog The implementation must deliver the dialog pattern’s expected keyboard and focus behavior; an ARIA role or attribute alone does not create it. Code must prevent outside interaction for all users before the dialog is honestly represented as modal. Implement and maintain the relevant behavior, including focus movement, containment, and return.

This is a behavioral distinction, not a quantified maintenance or compatibility comparison. The APG warns that aria-modal="true" should be used only when the code prevents outside interaction for all users and styling visually obscures outside content. Declaring modality without implementing it can mislead users. Native semantics also do not remove the need to choose sensible initial focus or test the resulting behavior.

Keep browser automation focused on the right dialog type

In Playwright, page.on('dialog') handles JavaScript browser dialogs such as alert(), confirm(), prompt(), and beforeunload; it is not the mechanism for an HTML <dialog>. Test the element through the page’s DOM and keyboard interaction. If a JavaScript dialog event handler is registered, it must accept or dismiss that dialog; otherwise the page can freeze. See the Playwright Page API.

Run the behavior test in the browser engines your application claims to support. One browser run does not establish behavior across every engine; the required browser matrix depends on the project, and no universal matrix is established by the cited guidance.
