To run a renewable sheep farm, bring two adult sheep together and feed each one wheat, use shears on adult sheep to collect one to three wool blocks without killing them, and apply a dye directly to change a sheep’s color. Keep grass in the enclosure so a shorn sheep can eat and regrow its wool, then shear it again. Dyed sheep keep their color when shorn and can pass color combinations to their offspring.
What you need before handling sheep
A small, prepared pen makes every sheep task easier. Gather the items below before moving animals into it:

- Wheat: the breeding item for sheep. You need enough to feed both adults each time you start a breeding attempt.
- Shears: the tool used on an adult sheep to harvest wool while leaving the animal alive.
- Dye: the color item you want to apply to a sheep. Keep separate supplies if you plan to maintain several wool colors.
- Grass: leave a grass-covered area inside the enclosure. A sheep must eat grass before it can regrow wool for another shearing.
Make the pen large enough for animals to move and for you to reach each sheep. A grass floor is more useful than a completely sealed, non-grass enclosure because regrowth depends on eating grass. If you are managing several colors, use separate pens or clearly separated sections so you can identify breeding pairs and collect the intended color efficiently.
Keep wheat, shears and the selected dye in accessible hotbar slots. This lets you switch from breeding to shearing or dyeing without repeatedly opening your inventory. Do not shear a sheep before you have confirmed that the pen still contains grass; an enclosure that produces wool once but cannot support regrowth is not a renewable setup.

How to breed sheep
1. Bring together two adult sheep
Breeding requires two sheep and both must be adults. Lead them into the same pen, or work inside an enclosure where they cannot wander away while you switch items. Baby sheep cannot be used as one of the two breeding adults, so wait until both animals have matured.
2. Feed each sheep wheat
Hold wheat and use it on the first adult sheep, then use wheat on the second adult. Microsoft’s Bedrock sheep behavior reference identifies wheat as the value in the sheep breed_items setting, and defines sheep as the compatible breeding partner. If the attempt does not start, check that you used wheat on both animals, that they are adults, and that they are close enough to remain together.
Once breeding succeeds, a baby sheep appears with its parents. Leave room for the newborn rather than packing animals into a space where you cannot reach them. You can repeat the same procedure whenever you have another pair of eligible adults and sufficient wheat.
3. Use color deliberately when breeding
Sheep retain applied dye colors, so colored adults are useful breeding stock rather than merely decorative animals. Breeding two compatible colors can produce a baby with a mixed color. The ranching mechanics reference gives blue plus white producing light blue as an example. Minecraft’s dye guide also suggests breeding yellow and red sheep to make orange.
Color breeding is not a substitute for direct dyeing when you need a guaranteed color on a particular adult. Use direct dyeing to establish the first animals in a color line, then breed those colored sheep when you want to explore or maintain inherited combinations. Record which parent colors produced a useful result and keep those parents in a labeled section of the pen.

How to shear sheep without killing them
Use shears on an adult sheep
Hold shears and use them on an adult sheep. Mojang’s Block of the Week: Wool explains that shearing yields one to three wool blocks. The sheep remains alive, but its coat is removed and it cannot provide another wool harvest until it has eaten grass.

Killing a sheep ends that animal’s future harvest, while shearing preserves the breeder, the color you invested in and the ability to produce more wool after regrowth.
Keep grass available for regrowth
After shearing, leave the animal in a pen where grass is accessible. Mojang states that sheep regrow wool after eating grass. A sheep that has not eaten cannot be shorn again, so an empty or unsuitable floor is the most common reason a wool farm stops producing.
Give the sheep time and access to the grass rather than repeatedly attempting to shear it immediately. When several animals share one enclosure, make sure the grass area is not blocked by cramped placement or inaccessible corners. If you are operating multiple color pens, each pen needs its own dependable grass supply; moving a shorn sheep to a bare holding cell will not restore its wool.
Plan collection around the one-to-three range
Each shearing produces a variable one to three wool blocks, not a guaranteed fixed amount. Treat the range as a per-shearing result when planning beds, banners, carpets or paintings. A large flock gives more frequent opportunities to collect wool, while a small flock takes less space and is easier to sort by color.
How to dye a sheep
Apply dye directly to the animal
Hold the dye you want and use it directly on the sheep. Mojang’s dye guide confirms that sheep can be dyed. This changes the animal’s wool color, which then becomes the color represented by wool harvested from that sheep.

Direct dyeing is the most controllable way to establish a specific color. It avoids waiting for a naturally occurring sheep of the desired color and avoids relying on the result of a parent-color combination. Dye the adult before breeding if you want its color to be available to the next generation.
Keep dyed sheep as permanent color sources
A dyed sheep retains its color for both shearing and breeding. You can therefore shear it repeatedly as it regrows, or use it as one of the parents in a color-breeding plan. Keep one or more adults of every color you depend on; losing the only parent of a color means you must locate or create that color again.
Separate colors physically or label the pen entrances. This prevents an accidental dyeing or breeding interaction from mixing the animals you intended to keep distinct. A simple layout with one section for undyed adults, one for established colors and one for experimental combinations makes the outcome of each breeding attempt easier to track.
How color breeding works in practice
Single-color offspring
Breeding colored sheep can maintain a single color line. If you need a steady supply of one color, keep compatible adults of that color together and use wheat on both. Their offspring can continue the color line, while the adults remain available for wool production after regrowth.
Mixed-color offspring
Some parent colors can produce a new mixed color. Blue and white producing light blue is a documented example. Yellow and red are another suggested pairing, with orange as the potential result. These examples illustrate why it is useful to keep parent colors identifiable: the result depends on the colors you combine, and a mixed color is a breeding outcome rather than a separate dyeing action.

When an exact shade is essential for a build, dye the sheep directly instead of assuming a breeding attempt will deliver that shade. Use breeding for expanding a palette, maintaining a line or creating combinations you want to test, and use direct dyeing for predictable setup.

Natural sheep colors in Java Edition 1.21.5
Natural wool color is version-sensitive. Mojang’s Minecraft: Java Edition 1.21.5 – Spring to Life release notes, dated March 25, 2025, describe a biome-dependent rule for sheep wool color. In that Java version, common natural colors are associated with broad biome groups as follows:

This table describes Java Edition 1.21.5 specifically. Do not assume that the same biome distribution applies unchanged to Bedrock Edition or to an earlier or later Java release. If you are searching for a natural color, confirm the edition and game version first; direct dyeing remains the dependable way to establish a chosen color in an existing flock.
Shearing, dyeing and breeding compared
Each method solves a different ranching problem. Use this comparison to choose the shortest path to the wool you need:

The resource trade-off is straightforward: breeding consumes wheat, shearing requires shears, and direct color control consumes dye. Color breeding uses wheat as well, but it can create a new color from existing dyed parents. Shearing has the strongest sustainability advantage because the same adult can produce wool repeatedly after each grass-fed regrowth cycle.

A reliable workflow for a colored wool farm
- Prepare a grass pen. Build an enclosure you can enter easily and leave enough grass inside for every shorn sheep to eat.
- Bring in two adult sheep. Keep the initial pair together and verify that neither is a baby.
- Establish the first color. Apply a dye directly when you need a predictable starting color. If natural color is acceptable, keep the adults undyed.
- Breed the pair. Feed wheat to both adults. Keep the newborn in the same protected area until it grows into an adult.
- Shear the adults. Use shears on adult sheep and collect the one-to-three wool-block result from each successful shearing.
- Wait for grass-fed regrowth. Leave the shorn animals in the grass pen until they have eaten; only then is another shearing possible.
- Expand color lines separately. Move colored adults into labeled sections and breed selected parent colors when you want to maintain a shade or attempt a mixed result.
- Reserve breeding stock. Do not shear or move every adult from a color line at once. Keeping identifiable parents prevents an accidental loss of the color you rely on.
This workflow separates the three jobs that are often confused: wheat increases the number of sheep, shears collect wool, and dye controls color. Grass is the bridge that turns a one-time shearing into a repeating harvest.
Troubleshooting common failures
The sheep will not breed
- Confirm that there are two sheep, not one sheep and a different animal.
- Check that both animals are adults.
- Use wheat on each sheep rather than using dye or another crop.
- Bring the pair close together in the same pen so neither wanders away between interactions.
The sheep will not produce wool again
- Verify that you are trying to shear an adult.
- Check that the sheep has access to grass. A bare floor does not provide the required food.
- Allow the shorn sheep to eat before attempting another shearing.
- If several sheep share the enclosure, make sure the grass has not been removed from the entire area.
The wool is the wrong color
- Apply the intended dye directly to the sheep for immediate control.
- When breeding colors, identify both parent colors before starting the attempt; a mixed-color result is possible for compatible combinations.
- Keep experimental parents separate from a production line so an unexpected offspring color does not replace the adults you need.
Natural colors do not match expectations
- Check whether you are playing Java Edition 1.21.5, the version covered by the biome-color release note.
- Do not transfer the Java 1.21.5 distribution to Bedrock Edition or another version without checking that version’s behavior.
- Use direct dyeing when locating a naturally spawned color is taking longer than the build requires.
Why shearing is the sustainable choice
Shearing preserves the animal and returns one to three wool blocks, while grass-fed regrowth enables another harvest. That cycle is especially valuable for materials used in beds, banners, carpets and paintings, because the same color-coded flock can continue supplying those projects.
Breeding supports the cycle by replacing lost animals and increasing the number of adults available for harvesting. Dyeing adds control over the appearance of the material before it reaches a build. Used together, the three actions provide a renewable source of colored wool without repeatedly removing sheep from the world.
