Yes—you can read many public-library ebooks on a Kobo. On a supported model, link your library card, open Discover > OverDrive, borrow an eligible title, and sync. You can also borrow in Libby or on your library’s website and then sync the Kobo. The exact model, country, library and ebook all determine whether the loan will work; some titles require a manual Adobe Digital Editions transfer instead.

How Kobo library borrowing works

Kobo’s built-in OverDrive feature connects the eReader to a participating public library. The library still supplies the loan; Kobo is only the reading device. You need a valid library card and PIN/password, and the library must use Libby/OverDrive. Buying a new Kobo is not necessary if you already have a compatible eReader or prefer to read library loans in Libby on another supported device.

There are three practical routes:

Route Best for What you do Main limitation
Borrow on Kobo A supported model and participating library Open Discover > OverDrive, sign in, borrow, then sync Only eligible Kobo-compatible titles appear or download
Borrow in Libby or on the library website Readers who prefer phone/computer browsing Borrow with the same card linked to Kobo, then sync the eReader Not every Libby loan can be delivered to Kobo
Manual transfer An unlisted Kobo or a title unavailable through Kobo’s built-in service Follow Kobo’s library-website instructions and use Adobe Digital Editions when required More setup and computer-based file transfer

Loans have the library’s lending period. Kobo automatically returns borrowed items when that period ends, so you do not incur late fees for an ordinary digital loan. A title that is already checked out may offer a hold rather than an immediate loan.

Which Kobo models work with OverDrive?

Kobo’s current support list for built-in Libby by OverDrive includes the following models. Check Kobo’s live guide before relying on the list, because model support and regional availability can change: Borrow eBooks from the public library using your Kobo eReader.

If your exact model is not listed, do not assume that it has the same on-device menus. Use Kobo’s separate library-website and transfer instructions instead. An unlisted model may still read a library ebook through Adobe Digital Editions, but the process is different.

Where is built-in OverDrive available?

Kobo lists built-in availability in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand. Being in one of those countries does not guarantee access: your local library must participate, and its catalog must contain titles licensed for Kobo delivery. Kobo also warns that some library ebooks are not available through Kobo.

Before troubleshooting the eReader, confirm three separate conditions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Your country is supported for the built-in feature.
  • Your library uses Libby/OverDrive and has issued you a valid card and PIN/password.
  • The particular ebook is offered in a Kobo-compatible format and is not restricted to another reading method.

What you need before setup

  • A Kobo account and an internet connection.
  • A valid library card number and its PIN or password.
  • A library that supports Libby/OverDrive.
  • A Kobo model on Kobo’s current built-in support list if you want to borrow directly on the eReader.
  • The latest practical Kobo software. An update to version 6.0 or later can sign you out of the library service, so keep your card details available for re-authorization.

OverDrive removed email-and-password sign-in on July 14, 2025. Kobo eReaders now use the library card number and PIN flow. Kobo recommends the QR-code method: the eReader displays a code, you scan it with a phone or another device, and complete the sign-in page. If you cannot scan a code, enter the web address shown on the Kobo in a browser and type the displayed code. Kobo’s sign-in guidance is in About the Libby app and Does an OverDrive account replace my library card or account?.

How do I borrow library books on my Kobo?

Link your library card

  1. Turn on Wi-Fi and sign in to your Kobo account.
  2. Open the OverDrive or Libby setup shown during device setup, or open the account/library-card area from the Kobo’s library settings.
  3. Choose your country and library when prompted.
  4. Sign in with your library card number and PIN/password. Prefer the QR-code flow; otherwise use the displayed web address and code.
  5. Confirm that the card shown on the Kobo is the same card you use in Libby. Kobo’s account and library-card help is available at Does an OverDrive account replace my library card or account?.

Borrow directly from the eReader

  1. From the Kobo home screen, open Discover.
  2. Select OverDrive.
  3. Search for an author, title or subject, then open the book’s listing.
  4. Select Borrow with OverDrive/Libby App (the wording can vary slightly with software version).
  5. If the title is available, confirm the loan. If it is checked out, choose the hold option when Kobo offers one.
  6. Return to the home screen and tap the sync icon or choose the device’s sync command. The loan downloads when synchronization completes.

Kobo says it will email you when a held title becomes available, provided your library account has a usable email address. The loan remains controlled by the library’s lending period and is automatically returned at the end of that period.

Can I use Libby on a Kobo?

You can use Libby to discover and borrow books for a compatible Kobo, but the Libby mobile app itself is not installed as a general-purpose app on Kobo eReaders. The normal workflow is to borrow in Libby, then synchronize the Kobo. Libby’s instructions are at Reading Libby ebooks on a Kobo ereader.

Borrow in Libby, then sync

  1. Open Libby on your phone, tablet or supported computer and sign in to the library card you intend to use on Kobo.
  2. Find the ebook and tap Borrow (or place a hold).
  3. On the Kobo, open the OverDrive sign-in area and verify that the identical library card is linked.
  4. Connect the Kobo to Wi-Fi and sync.
  5. Look in the home screen or My Books for the loan.

You can also borrow through your library’s website. The same-card requirement still applies: a loan made with one card will not reliably appear on a Kobo signed in with another card. A successful Libby loan is not automatically a successful Kobo loan; Kobo and Libby both note that some library ebooks are not compatible with Kobo.

Why isn’t my Libby book showing up on my Kobo?

Work through these checks in order:

1. Sync the eReader

Connect to Wi-Fi and run a manual sync. A loan made moments ago may not appear until the Kobo contacts the library service.

Kobo Libra Colour eReader, 7” Color E Ink, Waterproof, Black
  • BROWSE & READ EBOOKS IN FULL COLOR - Book covers, comics, graphic novels, illustrations, note-taking and more come to life. No glare in sunlight, no notifications - just you and your eBooks in full-color

2. Check the library card

Compare the card number in Libby with the card linked under Kobo’s OverDrive settings. If they differ, sign out and add the card used for the loan.

3. Confirm title compatibility

Some books in a library’s Libby catalog cannot be delivered to Kobo. Kobo’s Libby limitations on the Kobo Books app explains that availability in Libby does not mean availability on every Kobo route. Check the title’s format and the library’s delivery options before repeating setup.

4. Check the model and region

If the reader is not on Kobo’s supported-model list, or you are outside a listed country, the built-in menu may not be available. Use Libby on another device or follow the manual-transfer path.

5. Reauthorize after a software update

Kobo notes that an eReader update to version 6.0 or later may sign users out. Add the library card again using the QR-code or web-code process.

  • YOUR JOURNAL, DAILY PLANNER AND MORE - Dive into your stories with colorful markups. With Kobo Stylus 2* compatibility (*sold separately), annotate, highlight, and note take your eBooks in color
  • READ COMFORTABLY, ALWAYS - Ergonomically designed with page-turn buttons, left/right screen rotation, full font size and margin customization, and landscape mode
  • IPX8 WATERPROOF EREADER - Full waterproof protection and meets requirements of IPX8 rating - waterproof for up to 60 minutes in up to 2 meters of water
  • BETTER BY DESIGN - Thoughtfully made with recycled and ocean-bound plastic and repairability to waterproof protection

6. Reset the sign-in, not the whole device

Do not factory-reset the Kobo as a first response. Sign out of OverDrive, verify the card PIN with the library, and sign in again. Since email-and-password OverDrive sign-in ended on July 14, 2025, attempting an old email login will fail.

What if my Kobo model is not supported?

Kobo directs owners of unlisted readers to its library-website instructions. In that workflow, you borrow the ebook from the library site, download the authorized ebook file to a computer, open it with Adobe Digital Editions when required, and transfer it to the Kobo over USB. The exact file and authorization steps depend on the title’s digital-rights format and the library’s instructions.

Kobo specifically notes that some library titles not sold by Kobo require Adobe Digital Editions. Its official borrowing guide is the starting point: Borrow eBooks from the public library using your Kobo eReader. This fallback is more involved than a wireless sync and requires a computer, a USB cable and compatible Adobe Digital Editions authorization.

How holds, returns and renewals behave

Unavailable titles

If a title is checked out, Kobo may display a hold option. Place the hold through the Kobo or Libby workflow shown for your library. Kobo says it will notify you by email when the copy becomes available; you then borrow it during the library’s stated availability window.

Automatic returns

When the lending period expires, the ebook is automatically returned. You do not need to connect the Kobo at the deadline to avoid a late fee. The expired item may remain visible until the device synchronizes, but it will no longer be readable as an active loan.

Renewals

Renewal rules come from the library and depend on whether another reader is waiting. Look for the renewal control in Libby or the library website; if renewal is unavailable, return the title and borrow it again if the library makes it available.

Choosing the right borrowing route

Your situation Recommended route Reason
Supported Kobo, supported country, title marked compatible Borrow on Kobo or borrow in Libby and sync Wireless setup is quickest
Supported Kobo but you prefer phone searching Borrow in Libby, then sync Libby provides the discovery and borrowing interface
Title appears in Libby but not on Kobo Read it in Libby on a supported device, or follow the library’s alternate delivery method The title may not be Kobo-compatible
Unlisted Kobo model Library website plus Adobe Digital Editions where required Built-in OverDrive may not be available
Country or library is unsupported Use Libby on another supported device or ask the library about supported formats Kobo cannot enable a service the library or region does not provide

Do I need a library card to use OverDrive on Kobo?

Yes. Kobo’s current sign-in method uses a participating library card number and PIN/password. An OverDrive account does not replace the library card or the library’s own account. If you do not have a card, contact your local public library about eligibility, online registration and PIN recovery. Kobo’s explanation is at Does an OverDrive account replace my library card or account?.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical setup checklist

  • Identify the exact Kobo model, not merely the product family.
  • Check Kobo’s live supported-model and country information.
  • Confirm that your library participates in Libby/OverDrive.
  • Have the card number and PIN/password ready.
  • Use the QR-code or displayed web-code sign-in, not an old OverDrive email login.
  • Use the same card in Libby and on Kobo.
  • Sync after every new loan, hold notification or account change.
  • If a title still does not appear, verify Kobo compatibility before attempting a reset.
  • For an unlisted reader or unsupported title, use Kobo’s library-website and Adobe Digital Editions instructions.

Official help and compatibility references

The Bottom Line

A compatible Kobo, a participating library card and a Kobo-compatible title are the three conditions that make wireless borrowing work. Borrow in Discover > OverDrive or Libby, use the same card, sync the eReader, and switch to Adobe Digital Editions only when your model or title requires the manual route.
