You can boot a Windows installer or recovery environment from USB media, but that is different from starting a fully installed, portable copy of Windows on an external SSD. Microsoft’s former Windows To Go feature supported the latter and was removed starting with Windows 10 version 2004. Choose the steps below based on which result you need.

Choose what you want to boot

Goal What starts Microsoft status
Install Windows Windows Setup, which installs Windows onto a selected drive Microsoft documents booting Windows 11 installation media; this is not a portable-workspace procedure. Microsoft’s installation guidance
Recover or troubleshoot a PC The Windows recovery environment Microsoft documents recovery media and startup troubleshooting. Windows Recovery Environment
Use a complete Windows workspace from an external SSD An installed Windows system intended to start from USB-connected storage Microsoft’s Windows To Go feature was removed in Windows 10 version 2004 and later. Windows To Go overview

For the first two goals, bootable USB media is a supported, documented route. For the third, the standard installation-media instructions do not establish a currently supported, general-purpose method for making Windows 10 or Windows 11 run as a portable system from an external SSD.

Boot Windows installation or recovery media

Prepare the media and protect your files

Create or obtain the official installation or recovery media for the task you intend to perform. Connect it to the PC before startup. If you are installing Windows, back up important files first: Microsoft warns that a fresh Windows 11 installation wipes the contents of the target hard drive, including files and apps. In Setup, verify the selected disk carefully; do not assume the external SSD or internal drive is the target based on its position in a list. Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation guidance was updated February 4, 2025.

Open the startup boot menu

  1. Shut down or restart the PC with the USB media connected.
  2. During startup, press the boot-menu key for that manufacturer and model. The key varies; consult the PC manual or manufacturer’s support site rather than relying on a key listed for another computer. Microsoft’s installation instructions
  3. Choose the USB device in the startup menu. If more than one USB entry appears, use the manufacturer’s guidance to identify the correct one.
  4. Follow Windows Setup if you are installing, or the recovery prompts if you are troubleshooting. Starting recovery media does not install a complete Windows system on the external drive.

If the computer skips the USB device

If Windows starts normally or Setup does not appear, the PC may not be configured to boot from that drive. Microsoft’s recovery guidance recommends checking the manufacturer’s instructions for changing boot order. Firmware options and their names vary by device, so use the documentation for the specific PC or motherboard. Windows Recovery Environment

Why an external SSD does not automatically become portable Windows

Windows To Go was Microsoft’s feature for creating a Windows workspace bootable from a USB-connected external drive; Microsoft describes it as a feature for Windows 10 Enterprise and Education. Its overview states, “Windows To Go is removed in Windows 10, version 2004 and later operating systems.” The feature also did not support feature updates. Microsoft Windows To Go overview

Consequently, booting ordinary installation media and selecting an external SSD is not equivalent to creating a supported portable Windows workspace. Microsoft’s current installation instructions describe installing Windows on a device, not a general workflow for taking that installed system between PCs. Whether a custom deployment can boot depends on the deployment method, the computer’s firmware, the storage connection and device-specific compatibility; the official guidance cited here does not establish a universal procedure or guarantee that an unspecified PC will start from an external system drive.

A portable external SSD is the relevant hardware category for an external-drive workspace, but purchasing one does not restore Windows To Go or establish that a particular drive will boot a particular PC. The cited Microsoft sources provide no comparative compatibility, speed or reliability measurements for current SSDs.

Check firmware and Secure Boot carefully

UEFI and Secure Boot settings are managed in the device’s firmware. Secure Boot helps prevent malicious software from loading during startup; it is not a routine setting to disable just to make USB boot work. If temporary troubleshooting requires changing it, follow the PC manufacturer’s instructions and re-enable Secure Boot afterward, as Microsoft recommends. Microsoft Secure Boot guidance

Windows 10 support ended in 2025

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance and security fixes ended on that date. If you are preparing installation or recovery media for a Windows 10 device, account for that support status rather than treating Windows 10 as a currently supported option.
