To boot a Steam Deck from Ventoy, install Ventoy on a USB drive, copy your supported boot image to Ventoy’s main partition, connect the drive to the Deck, open Boot Manager, and select EFI USB Device. Valve gives that exact USB-boot choice in its SteamOS Installation and Repair instructions.
Ventoy does not put one image on a specially written, single-purpose stick. Instead, it creates a bootable USB layout and lets you copy image files to the drive’s main data partition. At startup, Ventoy scans that partition and displays the images it finds. The procedure is convenient, but installing Ventoy erases the selected drive, Secure Boot behavior varies by firmware and installation settings, and an image that appears in Ventoy may still be incompatible with a particular boot method.
What you need before starting
Prepare these items before changing anything on the USB drive:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- A USB drive that you are willing to erase. Ventoy’s installer formats the selected device and removes its existing data.
- A computer on which you can run Ventoy’s official installation process.
- The bootable image file you intend to use, obtained from the image publisher and supported by that project’s instructions.
- A way to connect the drive to the Steam Deck. A USB-C drive plugs in directly. A USB-A drive needs a suitable USB-C adapter or hub.
- A backup of any files currently on the USB drive.
Ventoy’s documentation describes a main partition for image files and a separate EFI partition. You copy images to the main partition after installation; you do not normally need to recreate the partition layout yourself. Read the current Ventoy Get start documentation for the release you are installing.

Install Ventoy without erasing the wrong disk
Back up the USB drive
Copy anything you need from the target USB drive to another location. Ventoy warns that installation formats the selected drive and all data on it is lost. This is an irreversible step for the files on that device unless you have a separate backup.
Identify the target device
Disconnect other removable drives if possible. In Ventoy’s installer, carefully identify the USB device by its reported name and capacity. Do not select your computer’s internal storage. If two drives have similar capacities, compare the device details again before confirming.
Run the official installer
- Download the Ventoy package from the project’s official distribution and open the installer for your computer’s operating system.
- Select the intended USB device in the installer.
- Review the warning that the selected disk will be formatted.
- Confirm the installation only after checking the device identity and accepting the data loss.
- Wait for the installer to finish, then safely eject and reconnect the drive if your operating system does not immediately show its new partitions.
The completed drive has Ventoy’s boot components plus a main partition for image files. The exact partition presentation can differ by operating system, but the important distinction is that your image belongs on the main data partition, not in the separate EFI partition.

Copy an image to the Ventoy partition
Use the image file as downloaded
Obtain the recovery, installer, or operating-system image from its publisher and follow that publisher’s requirements. Ventoy’s normal workflow is to copy the image file to the main partition; it is not necessary to write the image to the USB with a separate single-image imaging utility.

- Open the USB volume that represents Ventoy’s main data partition.
- Copy the intended image file to that partition. You can place it in the root or in a directory; Ventoy searches directories on the partition.
- Wait for the copy to complete before ejecting the drive.
- Safely eject the USB drive from the computer.
Keep the original filename and extension unless the image publisher or Ventoy documentation says otherwise. If you copy several supported images, Ventoy can list them separately at startup, which is useful for keeping a recovery image and an installer on one drive. Remove obsolete or duplicate files if the menu becomes difficult to read.
Check the copy before connecting the Deck
- Confirm that the image file is visible on the main partition.
- Check that the copy finished without an operating-system error.
- Make sure you copied the complete image rather than a shortcut or partial download.
- Review the image publisher’s boot requirements and architecture notes.
Ventoy’s menu can show an image simply because the file is present. That does not certify that the image’s boot method is compatible with every Steam Deck firmware version.
Connect the USB drive to the Steam Deck
Choose the appropriate connection
| Drive connector | Deck connection | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C | Direct connection to the Deck’s USB-C port | No USB-A adapter is needed. Ensure the plug is fully seated before opening Boot Manager. |
| USB-A | USB-C adapter or USB-C hub | The adapter or hub is a physical connection accessory, not a guarantee that every drive or image will boot. |
| USB-A through a hub while docked | Hub or dock connected to the Deck | Power Delivery passthrough can be useful for powered docked use. Valve discusses hubs, USB peripherals, and Power Delivery in its Docking the Steam Deck guidance, but does not certify a particular hub for Ventoy. |
If the Deck does not detect the drive, first simplify the connection: reseat the adapter, try a different port on the hub, or connect the drive directly when possible. A hub is not required when the drive already has a USB-C connector.

- Shut down the Steam Deck completely rather than leaving it in sleep mode.
- Connect the prepared Ventoy USB drive. If it has a USB-A plug, connect it through the appropriate USB-C adapter or hub.
- Open the Steam Deck’s Boot Manager using the hardware-button procedure in Valve’s support instructions.
- In Boot Manager, select the entry for the attached USB device. Valve identifies the expected choice as EFI USB Device (“your USB key”).
- Confirm the selection and wait for Ventoy’s boot menu to appear.
- Highlight the image you copied to the main partition and start it using the menu’s selection command.
The exact text shown in Boot Manager can depend on the connected device and the Deck’s firmware state. Do not assume every USB drive will use the same label; look for the USB entry corresponding to the drive you connected. If Ventoy lists multiple image files, select the one you intend to run and follow that image publisher’s on-screen instructions.

What happens after Ventoy starts
The Ventoy menu lists your image
This indicates that the Deck reached Ventoy and Ventoy found an image file on its main partition. Select the intended file. Any installation, repair, or recovery screens that follow belong to that image, so use the image publisher’s documentation for their choices and warnings.
The menu is empty
An empty menu usually means Ventoy did not find a usable image file on the partition it scans. Power off the Deck, reconnect the drive to your computer, and verify that the file is on the main data partition. Check the filename, extension, and copy completion. If the file is inside an unexpected partition or was never copied, move or recopy it to the main partition and safely eject the drive again.
The image appears but fails when selected
Do not immediately reinstall Ventoy. A visible menu entry proves that Ventoy can see the file, not that the image’s boot method is supported on this Deck. Check the image publisher’s instructions and Ventoy’s compatibility notes. The available documentation does not certify every operating-system or recovery image for every Steam Deck firmware version.

Confirm the physical connection
- Reseat the USB-C plug, adapter, or hub.
- If you are using USB-A, verify that the adapter or hub supports data, not only charging.
- Try the drive without the hub when a direct connection is possible.
- If the hub is powered, check its power and cable connections.
Verify that Ventoy was installed on this drive
Reconnect the USB drive to your computer and confirm that Ventoy’s partitions are present and that the image is on the main partition. If the drive still looks like an ordinary empty or differently partitioned disk, the installer may have targeted another device or the installation may not have completed. Re-run the official installer only after backing up anything that remains and rechecking the selected disk.

Check the firmware choice
Return to Boot Manager and look for the USB device entry rather than the internal storage. The label may not be identical to the drive’s retail name. Valve’s documented path is to boot the EFI USB Device; if no corresponding entry appears, the Deck has not exposed the drive as a bootable device in its current connection or firmware state.
Consider Secure Boot before changing more settings
A failure before the Ventoy menu can involve Secure Boot, the installation options used for Ventoy, or firmware behavior. Ventoy documents enabling Secure Boot support during installation and a first-boot key-enrollment process, but also lists limitations and computers on which the approach may not work. Read the current Ventoy Secure Boot documentation for your Ventoy release instead of treating one enrollment sequence as universal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Secure Boot: what to expect
Why it can change the result
Secure Boot checks whether the boot components are trusted by the firmware. Ventoy’s Secure Boot support depends on how it was installed, whether its key was enrolled, and how the Deck’s firmware handles that process. Two otherwise identical USB drives can therefore behave differently if their installation settings or enrollment state differ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf Ventoy requests key enrollment
Follow the prompts and the release-specific instructions in Ventoy’s Secure Boot guide. The first-boot enrollment path is not guaranteed to be identical on every machine. If the Deck does not offer the expected enrollment screen, stop and consult the current Ventoy documentation rather than repeatedly selecting random firmware options.

If Secure Boot remains incompatible
Ventoy documents machines and configurations where its Secure Boot solution may not work. Treat that as a compatibility limitation, not proof that the USB was copied incorrectly. Check whether the image publisher provides a boot method compatible with the Deck’s current firmware policy, and avoid disabling security settings unless you understand the consequences and the image’s instructions explicitly require it.
Separate three kinds of failure
| Where it fails | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No USB entry in Boot Manager | Connection, adapter or hub, drive detection, or firmware state | Reseat or simplify the connection, verify the drive’s Ventoy partitions, then reopen Boot Manager. |
| USB entry appears but Ventoy menu does not | Secure Boot, Ventoy boot components, or firmware compatibility | Review Ventoy’s Secure Boot guidance and confirm the official installation completed on the selected drive. |
| Ventoy menu appears but image will not start | Image compatibility or boot method | Check the image publisher’s requirements and Ventoy compatibility notes; do not assume the USB preparation is at fault. |
| Image starts but its installer or recovery program fails | The selected image’s own requirements | Use that project’s instructions and recovery guidance. |
Safety checks before using a recovery image
- Confirm that you selected the intended image in Ventoy.
- Read the image publisher’s warning about internal storage, partitioning, and data deletion.
- Back up important Steam Deck data before running a recovery or installation program.
- Keep the Deck connected to reliable power for a lengthy installation or repair operation.
- Do not remove the USB drive while the image is reading or writing data.
Ventoy itself only provides the boot menu and chain-loading environment. The image you choose may make permanent changes to the Deck, so its documentation controls what happens after you launch it.
Managing several images on one drive
Ventoy’s main-partition workflow allows multiple image files to coexist. Create folders if you need to separate recovery, installation, and diagnostic images; Ventoy searches directories on that partition and presents found images in its menu. Use descriptive filenames so you can identify the correct release at a glance.
When replacing an image, eject the drive safely, delete the old file, and copy the new one to the same main partition. If an image publisher requires a specific filename or folder, follow that requirement. Keeping only the images you currently trust reduces the chance of launching the wrong tool during recovery.
When a USB-C hub is useful
A hub is conditional, not a mandatory part of the Ventoy procedure. You need one when the chosen drive has a USB-A connector and you do not have a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter. A hub can also let you keep power, a display, or other peripherals connected during docked use, with Power Delivery passthrough being relevant to that setup. Valve’s docking guidance addresses those general connection features, not Ventoy-specific compatibility or a particular hub model.
For the simplest diagnostic path, use a USB-C drive directly on the Deck whenever possible. Every additional adapter, hub, and cable introduces another connection to check if Boot Manager cannot see the drive.
