To disable geolocation, change your browser’s Location permission. In Chrome, set the default to block websites from using your location; in Edge, turn off Ask before accessing; in Firefox, enable Block new requests asking to access your location. Then check each browser’s saved site exceptions, because an individual website can have a permission different from the browser-wide default.

These controls stop browser-mediated precise location requests. They do not guarantee that a site cannot estimate a broad area from your IP address or other information. Your operating system can also control whether the browser is allowed to obtain device location.

What disabling geolocation changes

Websites can request a device’s precise location through the browser’s Geolocation API. The browser normally shows a permission prompt, and the site receives coordinates only after the request is allowed. A browser-wide Location setting changes the default behavior for future requests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Block new requests: websites cannot present a normal browser location prompt or receive precise browser-mediated coordinates through a new request.
  • Review existing exceptions: a site that was previously allowed or blocked may retain its own rule, so inspect the saved site list after changing the default.
  • Check the operating system: Windows, macOS, and Android can separately allow or deny location access for the browser application.
  • Understand the limit: blocking precise geolocation does not hide your IP address. A site may still infer an approximate region from IP data or other signals.

Mozilla describes Firefox’s behavior this way: it does not share your location without asking first, and you can change or remove location permissions later. Chrome likewise says that it asks by default when a site wants to use your location.

Quick comparison of the three desktop browsers

Browser Browser-wide control How to block new access Per-site control Additional layer
Chrome Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Location Choose the option that prevents websites from using location (the wording can vary by version; Chrome help also describes “Never allow”) Location settings list, or the site information icon > Site settings Windows or macOS location settings; administrators may enforce settings
Edge Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All permissions > Location Turn off Ask before accessing Site information icon > Permissions for this site > Location > Block Windows 10/11 location permissions; site permissions apply on other operating systems
Firefox Settings (Preferences in some contexts) > Privacy & Security > Permissions > Location > Settings Check Block new requests asking to access your location, then save Location permissions dialog’s site list Operating-system controls can still affect whether Firefox obtains device location

The goal is identical in each browser, but the control names differ. Chrome uses a default Location permission and may label the blocking choice “Never allow.” Edge uses a switch named Ask before accessing and separate per-site values of Ask, Allow, and Block. Firefox uses a checkbox for new requests and a permissions list for saved decisions. If you move between browsers, do not assume that changing one browser changes another; each maintains its own site-permission database.

How to turn off location in Chrome on a computer

Block location requests by default

  1. Open Chrome and select the three-dot More menu.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Open Privacy and security, then select Site settings.
  4. Choose Location.
  5. Select the option that blocks websites from using your location. Depending on the Chrome version, the control may be phrased as preventing sites from seeing your location or as Never allow sites to use your location.

After this change, a site that has never been granted location access should not be able to obtain precise coordinates through a new browser request. Chrome’s labels can change between releases, so use the Location page reached through Site settings if the wording is not identical to these examples.

Remove or change one Chrome site exception

A browser-wide default is not the same as a saved rule for an individual website. To inspect exceptions, stay on the Location settings page and review the sections for sites that are allowed or not allowed to use location. Remove a grant if you want the site to fall back to the new default, or change the site’s rule to block.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can also edit the permission while visiting a site:

  1. Open the website.
  2. Select the information icon to the left of the address bar.
  3. Choose Site settings.
  4. Find Location and select the blocking option.
  5. Reload the page if it had already attempted to use location.

Changing a site rule is useful when you want most sites blocked but need to preserve a different decision for a particular service. If your goal is a complete browser-level block, check both the default and the allowed-sites list.

When Chrome says location is off in Windows or macOS

Chrome can report that location is disabled in the computer’s system preferences. In that case, the browser permission is only one layer. Open your operating system’s privacy or location settings and confirm whether Chrome is permitted to access device location. If the system denies access, Chrome cannot obtain the device-level location even if a website permission is allowed.

On a work or school computer, an administrator can manage Chrome policies. A setting that is greyed out, keeps returning after you change it, or displays a managed-device notice may be enforced centrally. Contact the organization’s administrator rather than repeatedly changing the local setting.

How to block location in Microsoft Edge

Turn off location prompts for all websites

  1. Open Edge and select the three-dot Settings and more menu.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Select Privacy, search, and services.
  4. Open Site permissions.
  5. Select All permissions, then choose Location.
  6. Turn off Ask before accessing.

With Ask before accessing disabled, Edge will not use its normal precise-location prompt flow for new website requests. The switch controls browser-mediated precise location; it does not prevent every possible method a site could use to estimate a region.

Block one website in Edge

  1. Open the website whose permission you want to change.
  2. Select the icon beside the address bar.
  3. Choose Permissions for this site.
  4. Set Location to Block.

Edge exposes Ask, Allow, and Block for an individual site. Choose Block when a site should never receive precise browser location, regardless of the general default. If you choose Ask, the site can request permission again later.

Windows location is a separate control

On Windows 10 and Windows 11, system location permissions provide another gate. Edge’s site permission can be blocked while Windows still allows the browser app, or Windows can deny location before a site-level permission has any effect. For the strongest restriction, review both the Edge Location page and Windows location privacy settings.

On other operating systems, Edge’s site permissions remain the browser-level control described above. Microsoft also notes that a website may estimate an imprecise location, such as from an IP address, without an Edge precise-location prompt.

How to disable location requests in Firefox

Block all new location requests

  1. Open Firefox and select the application menu.
  2. Choose Settings; some Firefox contexts call this Preferences.
  3. Search the settings for location, or open Privacy & Security and scroll to Permissions.
  4. Select Settings beside Location.
  5. Check Block new requests asking to access your location.
  6. Select Save Changes.

This checkbox prevents new sites from asking through Firefox’s location permission system. It does not automatically erase every existing entry in the permissions list, so inspect the list in the same dialog.

Review Firefox’s saved site list

The Location permissions dialog lists websites with an existing allow or deny decision. Select an entry to change its status, remove it, or clear the site’s saved rule so that the general policy applies. This is the place to check if one site continues behaving differently after you enable the block-new-requests option.

Firefox distinguishes temporary and persistent permissions. A temporary permission is removed after one hour or when the tab is closed. A permission saved for a site remains in the list until you change or remove it, so a persistent allow entry deserves particular attention when you are trying to stop location access.

Chrome on Android: disable location for websites

Chrome for Android has a browser setting and an Android app permission. Use both when you want the strictest device-level block.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Chrome and tap More.
  2. Open Settings, then Site settings.
  3. Tap Location and change the default to block website access.
  4. On the same screen, review sites already listed as allowed or blocked and change any exception.
  5. For the site currently open, tap the site information control, open Permissions, and change Location.

Android’s system settings separately control location access for the Chrome app. If Android denies Chrome’s location permission, Chrome cannot obtain device location even where a website rule permits it. Conversely, allowing Chrome at the Android level does not force a website to receive location; the website permission still applies.

How browser, site, and system permissions interact

Think of location access as a sequence of gates rather than one master switch. The browser-wide default determines what normally happens when a new site asks. A site-specific exception can replace that default for one origin. Finally, the operating system can allow or deny the browser application itself. All relevant gates must permit access before the browser can deliver device location to a page.

This explains why changing only one setting can produce confusing results. A browser-wide block normally stops a new request, but an old allow entry may still be visible in the site list. Conversely, a site may show an Allow value while the operating system denies the browser, producing an unavailable-location message. When troubleshooting, record which layer you changed and test again after reloading the page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Removing an exception is different from explicitly blocking it. Removing the entry makes the site inherit the browser-wide default; selecting Block creates a site-specific denial. Use removal when you want one consistent policy and use an explicit block when that site must remain denied even if you later relax the general default.

Check every layer when a website still appears to know your area

Confirm the browser-wide default

Return to the browser’s Location page and verify that the default is actually set to block or that new requests are blocked. A browser update can rename controls, and a managed profile can override a local choice.

Inspect the site-specific exception

Open the site’s information icon and its permissions panel, or use the browser’s central site-permission list. An earlier Allow decision can remain active even after you change the general default. Remove or block that entry, then reload the page.

Check operating-system permissions

Review the computer or phone’s location privacy settings for the browser application. System denial is an additional safeguard; system allowance does not override a browser-level block.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Distinguish precise location from an estimate

A page that displays your country, city, language, time zone, or a nearby service may be using IP-based or other inference rather than the browser’s precise geolocation API. Blocking the Location permission prevents the browser from handing over precise device coordinates through that channel, but it cannot make the public IP address disappear. A browser permission change therefore should not be presented as a guarantee of anonymity or exact location concealment.

Common problems and fixes

The location prompt still appears

  • Check that you changed the browser-wide default rather than only a different privacy setting.
  • Look for a site-specific rule that remains set to Ask or Allow.
  • Close and reopen the tab after changing the permission.
  • On a managed work or school device, ask the administrator whether a policy controls location.

A site says location is unavailable

This usually means the browser or operating system is denying access. That is expected when the goal is to disable geolocation. If you need the site to work again, restore permission at the same layer where it was blocked: the site entry, the browser default, or the operating-system app permission.

Only one site behaves differently

Use the site information icon and inspect its Location value. Site-specific permissions take precedence over the ordinary default for that site. Set the value to Block, or remove the exception so the site inherits the browser-wide rule.

The setting is unavailable or keeps changing

Look for a managed-browser indicator or a disabled control. Organization policies can set or lock permissions. Personal profiles can also be affected by switching between browser profiles, so verify that you are changing the profile used to visit the site.

What blocking geolocation does not do

Location permission controls the browser’s handoff of precise device coordinates. It does not act as a VPN, proxy, or general anonymity tool. A website can still see the public IP address associated with the connection and use it to estimate a country, region, or nearby service area. It may also use information that you voluntarily enter, account details, time-zone settings, or other browser signals.

That distinction matters when testing the change. If a map site stops placing a marker at your exact position but still selects your city, the permission may be working as intended. To test the browser control, look for a site feature that explicitly requests precise location and verify that the request is blocked or unavailable. Do not treat a city label alone as proof that the browser supplied GPS-like coordinates.

How to restore location access later

To re-enable geolocation, reverse the same setting in the browser’s Location page, then change the specific site’s permission to Allow or Ask as appropriate. If the operating system is blocking the browser app, restore its location permission there as well. A site may require a page reload before it can request location again.

Use the narrowest permission that meets your need. Allowing one trusted site while keeping the browser-wide default blocked limits exposure more than enabling location for every website.

Key takeaway

For Chrome, Edge, and Firefox on desktop, disable the browser’s Location permission, remove existing allowed-site exceptions, and check the operating system’s app permission. Those steps stop precise browser-mediated geolocation requests. They do not stop every broad location estimate, especially one based on an IP address, and administrator policies can control the final result on managed devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn off location in Chrome?

Open Chrome’s More menu, choose Settings, then Privacy and security > Site settings > Location. Select the option that prevents websites from using your location, often labeled “Never allow sites to use your location.” Review the allowed-sites list and block or remove exceptions.

How do I block websites from accessing my location?

Set the browser-wide Location permission to block new access, then inspect each browser’s saved site permissions. A site-specific Allow entry can differ from the general default. For the strongest restriction, also deny location for the browser app in Windows, macOS, or Android system settings.

Why can a website still show my city after I block location?

Blocking browser geolocation stops precise coordinates delivered through the browser’s Location permission. It does not hide your public IP address or other signals, which can provide an imprecise country, region, or city estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does blocking the browser permission erase previous approvals?

Not necessarily. Chrome, Edge, and Firefox keep site-specific decisions separately from the browser-wide default. Open the Location settings or the site’s information panel and remove an old Allow entry or change it to Block.

What is the difference between Ask, Allow, and Block in Edge?

Allow lets that site use precise browser-mediated location, Ask lets it request permission again, and Block denies the site. Edge’s browser-wide switch controls the normal prompt behavior for new requests, while the per-site value can override the general setting.

How long does a temporary Firefox location permission last?

Mozilla says a temporary permission is removed after one hour or when the tab is closed. A persistent permission saved for a site remains in Firefox’s Location permissions list until you change or remove it.

Can my employer or school control location settings?

Yes. Managed Chrome or other browser profiles can have permissions set or locked by an administrator. A greyed-out control, managed-device notice, or setting that repeatedly returns may indicate an organizational policy rather than a local browser problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will turning off location stop a site from working?

A site that requires precise location may report that location is unavailable or offer reduced functionality. Restore the browser, site, or operating-system permission later if you need that feature, and reload the page after changing the setting.

The Bottom Line

Block the browser’s Location permission, clear per-site Allow entries, and check operating-system access. This stops precise browser geolocation, but not broad estimates based on an IP address or other signals.
