Use each platform’s own safety controls: turn on Restricted Mode on YouTube and TikTok, and use the strictest Sensitive Content Control with an Instagram Teen Account. Parents can add Family Link on YouTube, Family Pairing on TikTok, and Instagram supervision where the account and country support them. These settings lower the chance of seeing graphic violence or sexual material; none guarantees that every item will be removed.
You must configure the apps separately. A setting enabled on one service does not protect the other two, and menus can differ by app version, account age, country and device.
What these controls can—and cannot—do
Recommendation systems, search results, comments and live features do not all use the same filters. Restricted Mode and Sensitive Content Control are designed to reduce exposure to material that may be unsuitable, not to create an absolute blocklist.
- They reduce exposure: Platforms use signals such as metadata, moderation reviews, age restrictions and account settings to limit material shown in feeds or search.
- They are not perfect: A violent or sexual clip can be misclassified, uploaded after a review, embedded in a compilation or described in a way that avoids detection.
- They are separate controls: YouTube, TikTok and Instagram each need their own setting. Browser, device and account rules can also differ.
- Family features are conditional: Parent enforcement generally requires an eligible child or teen account, a linked family service and, in some cases, a supported country or age range.
For a younger child, combine the platform setting with device-level supervision, a private account where available, direct reporting and regular conversations about what to do when an unwanted clip appears.

How to block violent or sexual videos on YouTube
Turn on Restricted Mode
- Sign in to YouTube.
- Open your profile menu.
- Select Restricted Mode.
- Activate the setting.
YouTube describes Restricted Mode as “an optional setting that you can use to help screen out potentially mature content that you or others using your devices may prefer not to view.” It works at the browser and device level, so repeat these steps anywhere the account is used: every browser profile, phone, tablet, smart-TV app, games console or shared computer that needs the restriction.
Prevent a child from switching it off
For an eligible child account, a parent can use Google Family Link to enforce YouTube Restricted Mode. Enforcement depends on the child’s account type and current Family Link eligibility. When it is enforced, the child cannot simply disable Restricted Mode in YouTube’s menu.
What YouTube filters
Restricted Mode is not the same as an age restriction. YouTube says its filtering can use a video’s title, description, metadata, Community Guidelines reviews and age restrictions. It may remove or reduce access to material that appears mature, but it is not a promise that every violent or sexual video will disappear. Restricted Mode can also hide comments while active, which changes what appears beneath videos as well as the videos themselves.

If an unwanted video still appears
- Confirm Restricted Mode is enabled in the same browser, device and account where the video appeared.
- Check whether another browser profile, guest session or signed-out viewing session is being used.
- Use YouTube’s reporting controls on the video if it violates the platform’s rules.
- For a child, review Family Link enforcement rather than relying only on the child’s local toggle.
- Remember that age-restricted videos and Restricted Mode are different systems; one does not replace the other.
How to stop sexual or violent content on TikTok
Enable Restricted Mode in the app
- Open TikTok and tap Profile.
- Tap the Menu button.
- Choose Settings and privacy.
- Open Content preferences.
- Tap Restricted Mode.
- Follow the prompts to create or enter the passcode and enable the mode.
TikTok says Restricted Mode limits exposure to content that may not be comfortable for everyone, including material with mature or complex themes. It is a reduction in exposure, not a guarantee that every graphic or sexual post will be blocked.
Use Family Pairing for a teen
A parent or guardian can manage a teen’s Restricted Mode through Family Pairing. The parent and teen accounts are linked in TikTok’s family controls, after which the adult can manage the available safety settings from the parent account. Exact options depend on the teen’s age, account status and the current rollout in the relevant country.
Know the feature trade-off
Some TikTok features are unavailable while Restricted Mode is enabled. TikTok specifically lists the Following feed, LIVE and gifting on LIVE among the features that can be disabled. Explain this before enabling the mode so a teen understands why parts of the app have changed.

Improve results when the feed is unsuitable
- Turn on Restricted Mode and keep the passcode private when the setting is managed by an adult.
- Use TikTok’s in-app controls to report an individual post that appears to violate its rules.
- Unfollow, block or mark accounts and posts that repeatedly expose the viewer to unwanted material.
- Check the account’s age and Family Pairing connection if a teen can change settings that should be managed by a parent.
- Update the app and recheck the current menu labels if the path above is different on your device.
How to make Instagram safer for a child or teen
Start with Instagram Teen Accounts
Instagram Teen Accounts place teens in the strictest available Sensitive Content Control setting. This reduces the likelihood that sensitive material will be recommended and, in many cases, hides it even when it is shared by someone the teen follows. Meta gives depictions of physical fights as an example of material that can be limited.
Teen Account protections are tied to the teen account and its eligibility. Rollout, age rules and available controls can vary by country, so check the account’s current settings rather than assuming every profile has the same options.
Add parental supervision
Parents can add Instagram supervision features when the account and region support them. Supervision can provide visibility into selected account activity and settings, while the teen still uses their own account. The exact screens and permissions can change as Instagram updates the product.

Block Instagram during selected periods
Instagram’s parental tools can block the app during selected periods, such as overnight or school hours. Time blocking does not classify content, but it prevents browsing during the schedule you choose and complements Sensitive Content Control.
When an unwanted post appears
- Use Instagram’s controls on the post or account to report content that violates its rules.
- Block or restrict accounts that repeatedly share material you do not want the teen to see.
- Review the teen account’s Sensitive Content Control level and supervision connection.
- Check whether the account is actually recognized as a Teen Account; age, country and rollout status affect eligibility.

Can one setting block content across all three apps?
No. YouTube Restricted Mode, TikTok Restricted Mode and Instagram Sensitive Content Control are independent. Enabling one does not change another app’s recommendations, search results, comments or live features.

On phones and tablets, verify the setting inside each app rather than assuming a device-level switch covers it.

A practical setup for a child’s device
- Identify the accounts. List the YouTube, TikTok and Instagram accounts actually used, including any secondary or guest profiles.
- Apply platform controls. Enable YouTube Restricted Mode, TikTok Restricted Mode and the strictest Instagram Sensitive Content Control available to the account.
- Link family tools. Use Family Link for an eligible YouTube child account, Family Pairing for a TikTok teen and Instagram supervision where available.
- Secure the controls. Keep TikTok’s Restricted Mode passcode private and make sure the child cannot use an unmanaged account or browser to bypass the intended setting.
- Set time boundaries. Use Instagram’s selected-period blocking and any device screen-time schedule appropriate for the child.
- Test the result. Check feeds, search and comments from the child’s normal account and device. A setting that appears enabled in one profile may be absent elsewhere.
- Teach the response. Show the child how to stop playback, leave a live stream, report a post and tell a trusted adult without engaging with the uploader.
- Review after updates. Menus, eligibility and rollout can change. Recheck the controls after an app update, account-age change or device replacement.
Why graphic content can still get through
Filtering is based on signals, not perfect recognition
YouTube may rely on titles, descriptions, metadata, moderation reviews and age restrictions; other platforms also classify material based on their own systems. A new upload, coded language, edited compilation or misleading thumbnail can evade a filter temporarily.
Different surfaces have different rules
A recommendation filter may not behave like search, comments or a live stream. TikTok’s Restricted Mode explicitly changes feature availability, while YouTube’s mode can hide comments. Instagram’s Teen Account protections focus strongly on recommendations and sensitive material, but supervision and time blocking address different risks.
Account and geography matter
Family tools and Teen Account protections are eligibility-based. Age, country, account type and rollout status can determine whether a control appears or whether a parent can enforce it.

- The setting is missing: Update the app, confirm you are signed in to the intended account and look for the current menu labels under settings or content preferences.
- The child changed it: Use Family Link, Family Pairing or Instagram supervision instead of relying on a locally managed switch, where the account qualifies.
- Content appears on another device: Reconfigure YouTube Restricted Mode in that browser or device and inspect alternate profiles and guest sessions.
- A feature disappeared on TikTok: Check whether Restricted Mode is active; the Following feed, LIVE and gifting on LIVE may be unavailable by design.
- A post is clearly abusive or illegal: Report it through the platform’s safety flow. Filtering settings do not replace reporting.
- Filters feel too restrictive: Review the account’s age and mode, then decide whether the safety trade-off is appropriate; do not disable protections merely to restore a feature without discussing the risk.
How to explain these controls to children and teens
Describe the settings as exposure reduction, not a guarantee or a punishment. Tell them that recommendation systems can make mistakes and that they should stop watching material that feels unsafe, avoid sharing it, and report it. Agree in advance on when a parent will review settings and what information the child can keep private. A calm reporting route is more useful than expecting a filter to catch every post.
For older teens, explain TikTok’s feature trade-offs and Instagram’s supervision boundaries before linking accounts. For younger children, prioritize an eligible managed account, device supervision and a small number of trusted apps rather than relying on a child to maintain several independent settings.
