A UPI transfer cannot be stopped after it has been initiated. If a debit is unauthorised, contact the account-holding bank immediately through an official channel and ask it to restrict further UPI transactions or access. Then report the incident to India’s 1930 cyber-fraud helpline, complete the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal process, and use your UPI app or NPCI’s complaint route to record and track the transaction grievance.
What “block UPI payments” can mean
People usually mean one of two different things when they ask how to block UPI payments:
- Stop a transfer that has already been sent. NPCI’s UPI FAQ states: “No, once the payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped.” A bank or app cannot promise to recall a completed UPI transfer.
- Prevent another unauthorised transaction. This is the action to take immediately after discovering fraud. Notify the bank that holds the affected account and request restriction or blocking of further UPI activity. RBI directions require banks, after receiving a report of an unauthorised transaction, to take immediate steps to prevent further unauthorised transactions in the account.
The second action does not reverse the first payment. It is an account-security measure intended to stop additional debits while the bank investigates.

Do this immediately after an unauthorised UPI debit
- Contact the bank that holds the debited account. Use the fraud or unauthorised-transaction number published on the bank’s official website, printed on your card, or shown inside its official app. Do not rely on a telephone number supplied by an unknown caller, text message, social-media account, or search advertisement.
- Describe the transaction as unauthorised and request restrictions. Ask the bank to secure the account and restrict further UPI transactions or UPI access connected with it. Ask what other controls are appropriate, such as a debit restriction or temporary account hold. The exact controls and menu names differ between banks.
- Obtain a complaint reference. Ask for the complaint or fraud-reporting reference number, the time your report was logged, and the channel used. RBI directions require an acknowledgement with a complaint number through the bank’s fraud-reporting system.
- Call 1930. Report suspected online financial fraud to India’s cyber-fraud helpline as soon as possible. Keep the acknowledgement generated by the call and follow the current instructions for submitting the related report through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
- Raise or track the UPI transaction grievance. Where supported, use the UPI app supplied by your participating bank to register or check a transaction complaint. NPCI’s complaint interface can route a complaint to the relevant member and show its status, but the member bank or institution is responsible for resolving the customer’s case.
- Preserve every record. Save the bank statement, debit SMS, UPI transaction ID or RRN, date and amount, the bank and app names, screenshots, call details, complaint numbers, portal acknowledgements, and any messages from the suspected fraudster.
How to ask your bank to block further UPI activity
Use a verified contact channel
Open the bank’s official mobile app or type the bank’s web address yourself. You can also call the number printed on the back of the debit card or another number published by the bank. If a caller claims to be a bank employee, end the call and contact the bank independently before taking any action.

Use precise wording
Tell the bank: “I am reporting an unauthorised UPI debit. Please register a fraud complaint, secure the account, and restrict further UPI transactions or access. Please give me the complaint number and explain the next evidence and liability steps.” Include the transaction amount, date, time, UPI transaction ID or RRN, the account or card involved, and the UPI app used.
Do not ask the bank to treat an already initiated transfer as cancellable. Ask it to investigate the debit and prevent additional activity. A bank may disable UPI, place a temporary restriction, or apply another control according to its systems and risk procedures. There is no single bank-wide app button or universal sequence that applies to every Indian account.
What the bank must do after notification
The Reserve Bank of India’s 6 July 2017 customer-protection notification says: “On receipt of report of an unauthorised transaction from the customer, banks must take immediate steps to prevent further unauthorized transactions in the account.” This duty concerns prevention after the report; it is not a guarantee that the disputed debit will be reversed.

How bank, NPCI and the cybercrime system fit together
| Route | Purpose | Who handles resolution |
|---|---|---|
| Account-holding bank | Report the unauthorised debit, secure the account, restrict further UPI activity, investigate and assess liability. | The bank that holds the affected account, subject to applicable rules and its investigation. |
| UPI app or NPCI complaint route | Register a transaction grievance, route it to the relevant participating member and check status where the service supports those functions. | The relevant member bank or institution. NPCI’s portal is a routing and tracking channel, not a promise of direct reimbursement. |
| 1930 and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal | Report suspected online financial fraud to law-enforcement and financial-fraud response channels. | The cybercrime reporting system and investigating authorities, with the bank still handling the account transaction complaint. |
Use these routes in parallel for suspected fraud. NPCI’s Register a Complaint page directs complaints about fraudulent, unidentified or unauthorised transactions to the respective bank for redressal. Calling NPCI alone does not replace the bank report.
Report the incident through 1930 and the cybercrime portal
Call first, then follow the portal instructions
Call 1930 promptly and provide the transaction information requested by the operator. Keep the system acknowledgement, incident details and any reference number. Then submit or complete the corresponding report through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal using its current workflow.
Be careful with the 24-hour instruction
An official citizen-fraud instruction document says that a person who reports by helpline must complete portal registration within 24 hours after receiving the system acknowledgement. That document is expressly marked “For Delhi Only.” Treat the 24-hour requirement as a Delhi-specific instruction from that document, not as a universal national deadline. If you are elsewhere in India, follow the current instructions displayed by the national portal or given by the 1930 operator.

What to enter
Prepare the disputed transaction’s date, amount, bank, UPI application, transaction ID or RRN, the account details requested by the portal, and a concise description of how the fraud occurred. Upload or retain the supporting files requested by the system. Do not edit screenshots in a way that removes timestamps, reference numbers or recipient information.

When it is useful
Use the UPI app’s complaint option or NPCI’s complaint interface when you need to register a transaction grievance, obtain routing to the relevant member, or check an existing status. The available categories and screens depend on the participating bank or app.
What it cannot do
NPCI does not turn an initiated transfer into a cancellable transaction. Its complaint page says: “Complaints with respect to fraudulent/unidentified/unauthorised transactions to be raised with your respective bank for redressal.” The member bank or institution remains responsible for investigating and resolving that complaint. Keep the NPCI or app complaint number alongside the bank’s fraud reference rather than treating one as a substitute for the other.

Choose the correct type of complaint
- Unauthorised or fraudulent debit: report to the account-holding bank immediately, and also use 1930 and the cybercrime portal.
- Failed or pending payment: use the UPI app or bank’s transaction-dispute route and provide the transaction status. This is different from a fraud allegation.
- Unidentified debit: treat it as potentially unauthorised until the bank confirms what it is; report it through the bank’s fraud channel.
Can a wrong UPI PIN block payments?
NPCI says that repeated incorrect UPI PIN entries may cause the bank to temporarily block sending money through UPI, depending on the bank. That is an automated security response, not a recommended fraud remedy. It does not reverse a payment already initiated, and deliberately entering wrong PINs can create access problems while you are trying to report the incident. Contact the bank instead.
Never disclose your UPI PIN, one-time password, card PIN, password or remote-access code to a caller, support-chat account or supposed refund agent. A legitimate bank investigation does not require another person to enter your PIN on your behalf.

Refunds, liability and reporting time
RBI customer-protection directions distinguish between a third-party breach, customer negligence and the speed of notification. The outcome depends on the facts, the account type and any current amendments; reporting does not guarantee a refund.

| Situation and timing | General RBI treatment described in the cited directions |
|---|---|
| Third-party breach, neither bank nor customer at fault, reported within 3 working days of receiving the bank’s transaction communication | May qualify for zero customer liability. |
| Qualifying third-party breach reported in 4 to 7 working days | Customer liability may be limited to the transaction amount or the applicable RBI table amount, whichever is lower. |
| Customer negligence, such as sharing payment credentials | The customer bears losses until the transaction is reported. Losses occurring after the report are borne by the bank under the directions. |
| Eligible zero- or limited-liability case | The bank’s directions provide for a shadow reversal within 10 working days after notification, subject to the applicable conditions. |
| Investigation and liability determination | The bank’s resolution period under the cited directions may not exceed 90 days. |
These are conditional regulatory timelines, not guaranteed payment dates. Ask the bank to explain which category it is applying, what evidence it needs, and whether newer RBI instructions or account-specific terms change the assessment.

Gather the following before calling, but do not delay the initial report while searching for every item:
- Bank statement or account ledger showing the debit.
- Transaction SMS, email or push notification.
- UPI transaction ID, RRN or other reference shown by the bank or app.
- Date, time and amount of each disputed transaction.
- Name of the bank, UPI app, account or card involved, and the recipient details shown on screen.
- Screenshots of the transaction, chat, call log, website or payment request connected with the incident.
- Bank complaint number, date and time of reporting, and the channel used.
- 1930 acknowledgement, cybercrime portal reference and NPCI or UPI-app complaint number.
- Any details of a phone number, UPI ID, QR code, account or link used by the suspected fraudster.
The cybercrime portal’s user guidance lists bank statements and transaction messages among supporting materials. Keep original files and make a separate backup; do not forward sensitive records to unverified “recovery” services.

| Your situation | First action | Additional action |
|---|---|---|
| You sent money and immediately changed your mind | There is no NPCI cancellation after initiation. | Contact the bank promptly and ask what dispute or beneficiary-contact process is available; do not describe a voluntary payment as fraud unless it was unauthorised. |
| You see a debit you did not authorise | Call the account-holding bank’s official fraud channel and request restrictions. | Call 1930, submit the cybercrime report, and record the UPI/NPCI grievance. |
| The transaction is pending or failed | Check the status in the UPI app and bank account. | Use the bank or UPI-app transaction-dispute route; a pending or failed status is not automatically evidence of fraud. |
| You shared a PIN, OTP or password with someone | Tell the bank immediately and request account and UPI restrictions. | Change exposed credentials through official channels, call 1930 and preserve the conversation as evidence. Liability may be affected by customer negligence. |
| You received a suspicious collect request or QR code | Decline it and do not enter a PIN to receive money. | If you authorised a debit by mistake or notice a resulting unauthorised transaction, use the bank and cybercrime steps above. |
Common mistakes that reduce the chance of a useful investigation
- Waiting for the recipient to return the money: delay can affect the applicable liability assessment and gives fraudsters more time to move funds.
- Calling a number supplied by the suspected fraudster: use only the bank’s verified channels.
- Assuming NPCI can cancel the transfer: NPCI can facilitate a complaint and status route; the relevant bank or institution resolves the case.
- Reporting only to the bank: for suspected online fraud, also use 1930 and the cybercrime portal.
- Trying wrong PINs as a blocking method: this may temporarily disable UPI sending but does not reverse a debit and is not a substitute for reporting.
- Sharing a screenshot publicly: redact account numbers, mobile numbers, QR codes and reference details when seeking general help online.
- Assuming a refund is automatic: RBI protections are conditional and depend on responsibility, reporting time, evidence and the applicable account rules.
What to expect after you report
The bank should give you a complaint reference and explain its investigation process. Keep checking the bank’s official channel for requests for documents and retain proof of each submission. Track the UPI or NPCI complaint separately when a status facility is provided. The cybercrime acknowledgement is another independent record; it does not replace the bank’s fraud complaint.
If the bank rejects or limits your claim, request the reason in writing and ask which RBI customer-protection provision or account term it applied. Escalate through the bank’s formal grievance process using the reference number. Continue to cooperate with any lawful request from the cybercrime authorities, while avoiding anyone who promises a guaranteed recovery in exchange for an upfront fee.
Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- A UPI transfer cannot be stopped once initiated.
- The fastest preventive step is to notify the account-holding bank and request restrictions on further UPI activity.
- NPCI’s route helps register or track a grievance, but the relevant member bank or institution resolves a fraudulent or unauthorised transaction complaint.
- Call 1930 and complete the cybercrime portal process using the current instructions; the documented 24-hour completion rule cited here is specifically marked for Delhi.
- RBI liability and reversal provisions depend on the facts and reporting time, so preserve evidence and do not assume a refund.
