To block unwanted texts on a Samsung phone, open the conversation in the messaging app that handles your SMS and block that sender there. The steps differ between Samsung Messages and Google Messages. This blocks the selected number—not every number that is missing from your contacts. Samsung’s current U.S. guidance also says Samsung Messages support changes for newer Galaxy software, so check which app is active before following the steps.
First, check which messaging app you use
Open your phone’s messaging app and locate the unwanted conversation. The app displaying your SMS threads is the one whose blocking steps you should follow; having a Samsung phone does not necessarily mean you are using Samsung Messages.
Samsung’s U.S. app and support pages say Samsung Messages is being discontinued and direct users to Google Messages. Samsung says Samsung Messages is no longer supported on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or higher starting July 2026, while devices on Android 11 or lower are described as unaffected. Samsung also says the app may become removable on One UI 9.0 or higher in fall 2026. These are separate support and removability changes, not a claim that the app disappears from every phone at once. Block a number in Samsung Messages
- Open Samsung Messages and open the conversation from the number you want to block.
- Open the number or conversation menu and choose Block number or Block. Confirm if prompted. Depending on the version, you can also touch and hold the conversation, tap More, then tap Block.
- To review or change blocked numbers, open the Messages menu and go to Settings > Block numbers and spam, if that option is available on your phone.
The wording and placement of the block option can differ. Samsung documents blocking a specific number through Samsung Messages, but the steps are not identical on every device or carrier configuration. Samsung support

Block a number in Google Messages
- On the Google Messages conversation list, touch and hold the unwanted conversation.
- Tap Block and confirm.
- To find a blocked thread or reverse the action, open your profile or options menu, go to Spam & blocked, select the conversation, and choose Unblock.
Google Messages treats blocking and spam reporting as related but distinct choices. Reporting a conversation as spam also blocks the sender and moves the thread to Spam & blocked; you can block without reporting. Google Messages Help
What “unknown number” blocking does—and does not—mean
In this context, “unknown” might mean a number you do not recognize, a number not saved in Contacts, or a hidden caller ID. The documented message-blocking steps target a particular conversation or number. They do not establish a universal Samsung Messages switch that blocks every text from every unsaved number.

Samsung’s Block calls from unknown numbers setting is in the Phone app’s settings and applies to calls. It is not a text-message filter. Samsung also documents blocking a particular number from Contacts, Phone, and Samsung Messages, where the installed software supports those controls. Samsung support
Should you report the text as spam?
Block a sender when you want to stop that conversation in your messaging app. Reporting is an additional option for suspected spam, but it can share information beyond your phone. Google says a spam report sends the sender’s number to Google; reporting a conversation may also send the last 10 incoming messages to help improve spam detection. For group conversations, the report may include other participants’ identifiers and message details. A separate spam-reporting conversation may send the sender’s number and most recent text to your carrier. Google Messages Help

For a suspicious message, do not reply to the sender. If a business text is clearly legitimate and you recognize the sender, use its official unsubscribe option; do not treat that as the default response to an unexpected or suspicious message.

In the United States, you can forward an unwanted text to 7726 (SPAM) to report it to your wireless provider. The FCC says providers use consumer reports to calibrate spam filters and blocking tools. The FTC’s 2024 consumer guidance also points to 7726 and in-app reporting. This is a reporting route, not a guarantee that the sender will be blocked across every network, and the short code should not be assumed to work outside the United States.
