On iPhone, turn on Settings > Apps > Safari > Block Pop-ups. On Android, open Chrome’s More > Settings > Site Settings > Pop-ups and redirects and turn the control off. If interruptions continue, check whether the game site has permission to send notifications; those are separate from browser pop-up windows. To reduce cross-site tracking, Android Chrome can block third-party cookies, and Firefox for iOS offers Enhanced Tracking Protection. These controls can affect how a game works, and none guarantees that every advertisement inside a game will disappear.
The key is to match the setting to the interruption: a new window, an off-page notification, an in-page ad, and tracking across sites are different problems. Start with the narrowest relevant control, then test the game before changing anything else.
First identify what is interrupting you
“Pop-up” is often used for several different things, but the fix depends on what is actually appearing. A browser pop-up blocker controls certain new windows or redirects. A notification is a message a site has permission to send, which can appear even when the game page is not open. An advertisement displayed inside the game page is part of that page’s content and may remain visible when pop-ups are blocked.

Before changing settings, note where the interruption appears and what happens when you dismiss it:

- A new browser window or tab opens: check the browser’s pop-up and redirect control.
- An alert appears outside the game page, including when you are not actively playing: check whether the site can send notifications.
- An ad occupies space within the game or appears as part of the page: a pop-up setting may not affect it. A browser’s additional ad-blocking or tracking protections may help with some content, but do not assume they will remove every ad.
- The page jumps to another address or repeatedly opens unwanted pages: review the pop-up and redirect control, and do not follow unexpected prompts or grant permissions just to get back to the game.
Google Chrome Help cautions that “Not all pop-ups are ads or spam.” A trusted site may use a separate window for a feature you intentionally opened. Block unwanted behavior first; make a site-specific exception only if you trust the site and need that particular feature.
A quick way to distinguish the cases is to close or leave the game page and observe whether the interruption continues. A message that still arrives when the page is not open points toward a notification permission, while a new tab generally points toward a pop-up or redirect. An ad that remains in the game’s layout is likely page content. This simple check can prevent you from weakening a privacy setting that has nothing to do with the annoyance.
Block pop-ups in Safari on iPhone
- Open the iPhone’s Settings app.
- Tap Apps, then tap Safari.
- Turn on Block Pop-ups.
- Return to the game and check whether new browser windows or redirects have stopped.
This is Apple’s documented iPhone path for Safari’s pop-up control. It is not a promise that every ad embedded in a game page will be removed. If the game still displays advertising inside its own page, the pop-up setting may be working as intended.
If an interruption continues, avoid tapping an alert that claims you must install something, claim a prize, or change a security setting. First determine whether it is part of the Safari page or a notification. Safari’s other privacy options may also be worth reviewing, but the Apple instruction for this setting does not establish that enabling Block Pop-ups blocks all in-page advertising.
After changing the switch, return to the same game and repeat the action that triggered the interruption, if you can do so safely. Testing one setting at a time makes the result clearer: if the new window stops appearing but a banner remains inside the game, you have identified two different ad behaviors rather than a failed blocker. Do not use an unexpected prompt as a reason to install an app or disclose information.
Block pop-ups and redirects in Chrome on Android
- Open Chrome and tap More (the three-dot menu).
- Tap Settings, then Site Settings.
- Tap Pop-ups and redirects.
- Turn the setting off to block pop-ups and redirects.
- Return to the game page and see whether the unwanted window or redirect recurs.
When Chrome blocks a pop-up, Google says an indicator appears in the address bar. If a game feature you deliberately use stops working, check whether it requires a pop-up window. Chrome allows a site-specific exception; use one only for a site you trust and only when the feature is needed. Do not turn pop-ups on for every site to address one game’s problem.
A blocked-pop-up indicator is useful evidence that Chrome stopped a window, but it does not tell you that every interruption came from a pop-up. If the game’s ordinary play continues and only a separate feature fails, consider whether that feature is the reason the site tried to open another window. An exception should be limited to that site, not treated as a general fix for ads or tracking. If you do not recognize the site or did not ask for the window, keep blocking it.

Stop game-site notifications separately
A notification is not a newly opened browser window. If an alert appears outside the page, keeps returning after the pop-up blocker is enabled, or shows up when you are no longer playing, review the game site’s notification permission in Chrome. Google’s Android instructions cover managing site settings and permissions, including notifications, on a site-by-site basis.
- Open the site’s permission controls in Chrome’s site settings.
- Find the game site and review its notification permission.
- Turn off notifications for that site if you do not want its alerts.
- Revisit the game only if needed, and decline a notification request unless you have a clear reason to receive messages from that site.
The exact route to a site’s permissions can vary with how you reach the site and Chrome’s version. Use Chrome’s site-level settings rather than allowing notifications broadly. Removing notification permission addresses alerts; it does not necessarily remove ads shown while the game page is open.
Permission controls are separate because a site can be allowed to send notifications without opening browser windows. Conversely, a pop-up blocker can stop a new window while leaving a notification permission unchanged. If you previously tapped “Allow” on a notification request, revoking that site’s permission is the targeted remedy. Avoid accepting a permission request just because the game presents it as a way to continue; notifications are optional unless you actually want site alerts.
Reduce cross-site tracking without weakening protection everywhere
Android Chrome: block third-party cookies
Chrome for Android provides a third-party-cookie control at Settings > Site settings > Third-party cookies. Google explains that third-party cookies can be used by embedded sites to personalize ads and learn about activity across sites. Blocking them can reduce that form of cross-site tracking, but Google warns that some sites may not work as expected.

Chrome supports site-specific cookie exceptions, so you can make a narrow exception for a game site you trust rather than weakening the setting for all sites. Only add an exception when the game’s functionality matters enough to justify it; then check whether the feature works and whether you can keep the broader protection in place.
Think of third-party-cookie blocking as a privacy trade-off, not an ad-removal switch. It may reduce a way embedded services use to recognize activity across sites, but the game may rely on an embedded component that expects those cookies. If a particular feature fails, first confirm that the problem began after changing the cookie setting; if you decide to make an exception, keep it specific and check whether the feature works again. You can then decide whether that convenience is worth the exception.

Firefox for iOS: Enhanced Tracking Protection
Firefox for iOS offers Enhanced Tracking Protection. Mozilla describes it as a way to reduce targeted ads and help stop advertisers from tracking browsing. Mozilla also warns that tracking protection can affect site functionality. If a game behaves differently with protection enabled, treat that as a compatibility issue to investigate rather than assuming the browser is broken.
Mozilla has also described an ad blocker for Firefox on iOS that works alongside its existing privacy protection. Mozilla explicitly says it will not block every ad, and described the feature as rolling out. Check the Firefox version and current settings on your device before relying on its availability. Even if the feature is available, do not expect it to eliminate all advertising in every browser game.

These are related but distinct protections: tracking protection is aimed at reducing advertiser tracking, while an ad-blocking feature addresses some ads. The feature’s availability can depend on the version currently installed, so look in the current Firefox settings rather than assuming every iPhone has it. If a game works differently after enabling protection, note which setting changed and test whether the affected function returns when that protection is adjusted; avoid disabling every privacy feature at once.
Do Not Track is not a substitute for blocking
Chrome’s Do Not Track option sends a request to websites; it does not technically prevent a site from tracking you. Google states that most websites and services do not change their behavior in response to the request. It may communicate a preference, but it is not equivalent to blocking third-party cookies, pop-ups, or trackers through browser protection.
That distinction matters when judging whether a setting is working. A preference request asks a site to honor a choice; a browser control such as blocking third-party cookies restricts a particular mechanism. Turning on Do Not Track alone should not be treated as confirmation that a game or its embedded services have stopped collecting cross-site activity.

These controls address different mechanisms, so they are not interchangeable. The official guidance cited here does not provide a comparable test of how successfully different mobile browsers block ads in games. There is no supported percentage or ranking to apply to your particular game.

For a practical comparison, ask four questions rather than looking for a universal “best” browser: does it offer a built-in pop-up and redirect control; what tracking protections are available; is any separate ad-blocking feature available in your current version; and does the game still function with stricter cookie or tracking settings? Also check whether you previously granted the site notifications. A browser can be strong on one of these axes and still leave another problem untouched.
There is no comparable benchmark here that can say one mobile browser blocks a particular share of game ads. Results also depend on whether the interruption is a page ad, a new window, a redirect, or a notification. Use the visible behavior and the controls available on your device as the guide instead of relying on a percentage or ranking.
Troubleshoot when the game still interrupts you
A new window still opens
- Confirm the browser-level pop-up setting is off or enabled as a blocker.
- Check that you changed the setting in the browser you are actually using to play; a setting in one browser does not control another.
- On Android Chrome, look for the blocked-pop-up indicator in the address bar. If a feature you trust needs a window, use a site-specific exception rather than allowing pop-ups for all sites.
An alert appears outside the page
- Review the game site’s notification permission separately from the pop-up setting.
- Disable notifications for the specific site if you do not want them.
- Do not grant a permission simply because an alert says it is required to continue playing.
An advertisement remains inside the game
- Check whether it is visibly part of the game page rather than a separate browser window.
- Keep expectations realistic: a pop-up blocker does not guarantee removal of in-page advertising.
- If using Firefox for iOS, verify the installed version and whether its ad-blocking feature is available in your settings. Mozilla says it does not block every ad.
The game breaks after tracking protection changes
- Identify the change that preceded the failure, such as blocking third-party cookies or enabling tracking protection.
- Use a site-specific exception only if the site is trusted and the broken feature is important.
- Avoid turning off protections globally as the first fix; a narrow exception limits the change to the site that needs it.
When troubleshooting, change one control at a time and repeat the same action in the game. If several settings are altered together, it becomes difficult to tell whether a new window, a permission prompt, or a missing game feature caused the result. Keep a note of the setting you changed and whether the specific symptom improved. If nothing changes, restore the setting you altered and investigate the correct category instead of continuing to loosen unrelated protections.

If your goal is to stop a browser window from opening, start with the browser’s pop-up and redirect control. If the interruption is an alert sent when the page is not in front, address notification permission. If the goal is to reduce cross-site ad personalization, use the available tracking or third-party-cookie protection and watch for site compatibility problems. If you are trying to remove an ad displayed directly in the game, understand that browser controls may not remove it.
For mobile games, a practical sequence is to leave broad protections enabled, revoke unwanted notification access, and add a site-specific exception only when a trusted game feature requires it. That approach distinguishes an actual compatibility need from an ad or alert that merely asks you to loosen settings.
There is no single switch that combines pop-up blocking, notification control, tracking protection, and removal of every in-page ad. Use the setting that corresponds to the behavior you see, keep exceptions narrow, and reassess if the game changes after a privacy setting is adjusted. If the only remaining interruption is advertising within the game page, recognize that the browser’s pop-up control may already be doing its job.

Will blocking pop-ups remove every ad in a mobile browser game?
