To control which Macs can newly enroll in Intune, configure a macOS device platform restriction, set whether personally owned devices are allowed, and assign the policy to the right users or groups. Intune treats Macs as personally owned by default; registering a serial number or enrolling through Apple Automated Device Enrollment (ADE) identifies a Mac as corporate-owned. These restrictions manage enrollment eligibility, not device security.

What Intune enrollment restrictions control

Intune uses two types of enrollment restrictions:

  • Device platform restrictions determine whether macOS enrollment is allowed and whether personally owned devices may enroll.
  • Device limit restrictions cap the number of devices a user can enroll.

This guide focuses on platform restrictions for Macs. A restriction change affects new enrollments; it does not remove or reclassify Macs already enrolled. Microsoft describes enrollment restrictions as a best-effort barrier for non-malicious users, not a security feature: a compromised device may misrepresent its attributes. Use restrictions alongside your organization’s broader security and compliance controls. Microsoft’s enrollment restrictions overview

Configure a macOS device platform restriction

  1. Open the restriction settings. In the Intune admin center, go to Devices > Device onboarding > Enrollment > Device platform restriction.
  2. Choose the macOS tab. Create a restriction or edit an existing one.
  3. Set enrollment eligibility. Set the MDM platform control to allow or block macOS enrollment. Set the Personally-owned control to match your BYOD policy. To prevent personal Macs from enrolling, disallow personally owned devices while ensuring the intended corporate enrollment path is available.
  4. Assign the policy. Assign the restriction to the users or groups it should govern. Check its priority: the default policy applies to user and userless enrollments until a higher-priority policy is assigned.
  5. Allow for assignment processing. Microsoft says processing between Microsoft Entra and Intune typically takes about 15 minutes. A new group or filter assignment may not apply immediately.
  6. Validate the intended enrollment path. Confirm the Mac is recognized as corporate-owned and that the assigned restriction permits its enrollment before applying the policy broadly.

The overview says restrictions apply to user-driven enrollments; for enrollment scenarios that are not user-driven, Intune enforces the default policy. Microsoft’s overview of enrollment restrictions

Who can manage restrictions?

An Intune Administrator can create, edit, delete, and reprioritize device platform restrictions. Other built-in Intune roles have read-only access. The restriction page also supports Apple device filters using manufacturer, model, OS version, ownership, and enrollment policy name. Microsoft’s platform restriction guidance

How Intune decides whether a Mac is corporate-owned

By default, Intune classifies macOS devices as personally owned. For Intune to classify a Mac as corporate-owned, register its serial number or enroll it through Apple ADE. Before disallowing personal enrollment, check that the organization’s serial-number records or ADE assignments are in place; otherwise, an intended corporate Mac may not match the policy. Microsoft’s enrollment restrictions overview

Choose an enrollment method for the Mac

Method Intended ownership Control and deployment
BYOD device enrollment Personal Macs Microsoft recommends this approach for personal Macs.
Apple Automated Device Enrollment (ADE) Organization-owned Macs purchased through Apple Business or Apple School Manager Supports supervised, over-the-air setup and zero-touch or bulk enrollment. ADE devices are supervised by default; an ADE policy can enable locked enrollment to prevent users from unenrolling.
Apple Configurator Organization-owned Macs Microsoft recommends it as an organization-owned enrollment approach. Direct enrollment requires physical access.

Microsoft’s macOS enrollment guidance and ADE enrollment guidance describe these options. Choose the path that matches how the Mac is owned and provisioned: ADE is suited to centrally managed deployment, while personal Macs should use BYOD enrollment.

ADE prerequisites

Microsoft lists these prerequisites for ADE setup:

  • Access to the Apple portal.
  • An active Apple token in .p7m format.
  • An Apple MDM push certificate in Intune.

ADE can deliver enrollment policies over the air during setup and install device configurations users may not be able to remove. Microsoft’s ADE setup guidance

Locked enrollment and local administrator management

An ADE enrollment policy can enable locked enrollment to prevent users from unenrolling their Macs. Microsoft says that once the device is enrolled, changing this setting requires wiping the device. For supported macOS ADE devices, local administrator account configuration can also enable Microsoft LAPS, which manages a randomized administrator password through Intune. Check these points before enforcing the restriction

  • Ownership records: Make sure the organization’s serial-number records are registered or the Mac is assigned through ADE if it should be recognized as corporate-owned.
  • Policy assignment and priority: Verify the intended users or groups receive the policy and that a higher-priority policy is not changing the result.
  • Processing time: Allow about 15 minutes for Microsoft Entra-to-Intune assignment processing before concluding a new assignment has failed.
  • Enrollment scenario: Confirm whether the enrollment is user-driven; non-user-driven scenarios use the default policy.
  • Existing devices: Do not expect a restriction edit to affect Macs that are already enrolled.
  • Security posture: Do not rely on an enrollment restriction to protect a device that is compromised or misrepresenting its attributes.
