Use TikTok’s built-in controls: open a profile and choose Block to stop an account from contacting or interacting with you, or choose Report to send an account or post to TikTok for policy review. For videos, press and hold the video and tap Report. For direct messages, report an individual message or the entire chat from Inbox; TikTok also offers Report and block in that flow. Menu names can differ by region and app version, so use the closest equivalent labels shown in your app.
Block, report, or do both?
Blocking and reporting solve different problems. A block is an immediate boundary between your account and another account. A report asks TikTok to examine an account, video, message, or conversation under its Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. Reporting does not automatically remove content or ban anyone; TikTok decides what action, if any, is appropriate after review.

Choose Block when your priority is stopping contact or interaction now. Choose Report when you believe the behavior or content violates TikTok policy and should be reviewed. If a message is both unwanted and potentially abusive, the direct-message flow lets you report it and block the sender together.
Before you start
- Use the current TikTok app when possible. TikTok says safety and content-control settings can vary by region and app version.
- Have the relevant account, video, or chat open before starting. The available report reason depends on which item you report.
- Save any information you may need for your own records, such as the account name or the time a message arrived. Do not continue an unsafe conversation merely to collect evidence.
- If you feel in immediate danger, use appropriate local emergency or safeguarding services as well as TikTok’s controls. A platform report is not an emergency response.
The labels below follow TikTok’s documented routes. If your screen uses slightly different wording, look for the equivalent Report, Block, or More options control rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.

How to block a TikTok account
- Open TikTok and go to the person’s profile.
- Tap the menu in the top-right corner of the profile.
- Tap Block.
- Confirm the block when TikTok asks.
Blocking is the fastest way to establish a personal boundary. TikTok’s older official harassment guidance says a blocked user cannot contact you, view your content, or interact with it. That description comes from a 2019 guide, so treat it as TikTok’s documented effect rather than a promise that every current screen will use the same wording. The confirmation dialog and menu position can change as the app is updated.
A block by itself is not a policy report. If the account is impersonating someone, sending threats, posting prohibited material, or otherwise violating TikTok’s rules, complete the report flow as well. Blocking protects your interaction with the account; reporting gives TikTok an item to evaluate.
Blocking is account-specific: start from the profile you want to stop. If the same person uses another account, each profile has to be handled through the controls that appear for that profile. If your concern is a particular post rather than the account generally, report the video too, because that sends the specific item for review.
How to report a TikTok account
Report from the TikTok app
- Open the account’s profile.
- Tap Share on the profile.
- Tap Report.
- Choose Report account.
- Select the reason that best describes the problem.
- Follow the remaining prompts and submit the report.
Use the most specific reason available. The reason tells TikTok what type of behavior or account activity it should examine; it does not guarantee a particular enforcement result. If the issue affects the account’s identity or repeated conduct, report the account rather than relying only on a report attached to one post.
Report from a browser
TikTok also documents a browser route. Open the profile, choose More options, select Report, then choose Report account, select a reason, and submit. The browser and app routes may not look identical, especially when TikTok is testing a new interface or serving a different regional version.
If the profile menu shows Report directly instead of under Share, use the visible report control and continue to the account-report option. The important distinction is to report the account rather than one individual post when the concern applies to the person’s overall behavior or identity.
Do not confuse reporting with sending feedback about a missing button. The account route is for the profile you want TikTok to review. If the available category does not exactly describe the conduct, choose the closest accurate option and complete the prompts instead of selecting an unrelated category merely to finish.

How to report a TikTok video
- Open the video that you believe violates TikTok’s Terms of Service or Community Guidelines.
- Press and hold the video.
- Tap Report.
- Choose the reason that matches the content.
- Complete the prompts and submit.
TikTok’s documented video route starts with a long press on the video itself. If controls appear over the video, keep holding until the action menu opens. Report the specific video when the problem is tied to that post; report the account separately if the concern covers the creator’s broader conduct.

A report sends the video for review. TikTok says it reviews reported material against its policies and may remove content or ban an account when it finds a violation. It does not promise that every report will result in removal, and it does not publish a guaranteed response time for an individual report.
Use the video report while that video is open so the submission points to the relevant post. If several posts raise the same account-level concern, the profile-report route is the better match, and you can still report an especially serious video separately.
How to report a TikTok direct message
Report one message
- Tap Inbox in the TikTok app.
- Open the chat containing the message.
- Press and hold the specific message you want TikTok to examine.
- Tap Report.
- Select a reason and follow the prompts.
- Choose Report and block if you want to submit the report and block the user together. Choose Report if you only want to submit the report, then finish the prompts.
Reporting an individual message focuses the submission on that message. This is useful when a conversation contains one clearly problematic item and you want to identify it precisely. Holding a message is different from opening the chat-level menu, so make sure you are acting on the message you intend to identify.

- Open Inbox and enter the chat.
- Tap More options at the top of the conversation.
- Tap Report.

Use the conversation route when the concern involves a pattern of messages or the chat itself rather than one isolated message. TikTok’s Help Center instructions distinguish reporting a held message from reporting the conversation through the top-level options.
If you only submit Report, the report and blocking remain separate decisions. If stopping further contact is important, use Report and block when it is offered. If you choose report without blocking, you can still use the profile’s block control afterward.
When to report and block together
The combined option is available in TikTok’s direct-message reporting flow. It is useful when you want TikTok to review the message or chat and you do not want further contact from that account while the review process runs. In practical terms, the report and the block serve separate purposes: the report goes to TikTok, while the block changes how that account can interact with you.
For an account or video, TikTok documents separate report and block controls rather than one universal combined button. You can report the account or video, then return to the profile and use Block if you also need an immediate boundary.
There is no need to wait for a report decision before blocking. Blocking is the protective action you control; reporting is the request for platform review. Conversely, blocking alone does not tell TikTok that the account, video, or message may violate its rules.

What happens after you submit a report
TikTok reviews the report
TikTok says it uses automated and human evaluation when reviewing reported content. It compares the reported material with its policies and may remove content or ban an account if it determines that a violation occurred. A submission is a request for review, not a finding that a violation has already been established.
Because TikTok does not promise a specific response time or outcome for an individual report, do not assume that silence means the report was ignored or that a report guarantees removal. Keep using the available safety controls if the unwanted contact continues. Do not submit repeated reports simply because you have not received an immediate decision; instead, make sure the original report identified the correct account, video, message, or conversation.
Your identity is not disclosed to the reported person
TikTok’s Safety Center, in a page updated December 2, 2025, states: “If you decide to report, you can feel safe knowing that TikTok will not disclose your identity to the person whose content or account you’re reporting.” This applies to the reporting context described by TikTok; it is not a general promise about every disclosure the service may make for other legal or safety reasons.

If TikTok restricts content or bans an account, it may notify the affected creator or account holder. TikTok says that notification does not reveal who submitted the report. The reported person may therefore know that TikTok took action, but not which user made the report.
Check your report history
TikTok provides an in-app record of submitted reports. Open Profile, tap the menu, choose Settings and privacy, open Support, tap Safety Center, and select Report records. The exact arrangement can change with regional and app-version differences, but these are TikTok’s documented labels for finding the history.
Report records are useful for confirming what you submitted and for checking any status information TikTok sends to your Inbox. They do not change the review outcome, and finding no familiar label in the same place does not necessarily mean reporting is unavailable; look for the closest current equivalent under support or safety settings.
Appeals are for the affected account or post
TikTok says users who believe their own account or post was incorrectly removed or banned can submit an appeal. That appeal process is separate from the original report: a reporter cannot use an appeal to force a particular enforcement decision on someone else’s account.

The menu is in a different place
TikTok explicitly cautions that settings may vary by region and app version. A profile may show Share, More options, or a three-dot menu in different locations. Open the profile-level menu and look for Report or Block; do not rely on an older screenshot.

You cannot find a report reason
Scroll through the available categories and choose the closest accurate reason. Avoid selecting an unrelated category simply to submit faster. If the issue concerns a video, report the video itself; if it concerns the account’s identity or repeated conduct, use the account-report route.
You want to stop contact immediately
Use Block on the profile, or select Report and block while reporting a direct message. Reporting alone asks TikTok to review the material but is not the same as applying a block.
You need to report from a computer
Use the documented browser profile route: open the profile, choose More options, select Report, choose Report account, select a reason, and submit. TikTok’s direct-message instructions in the cited Help Center material are app-based, so the message-report controls may not be identical in a desktop browser.

Match the control to the scope of the problem. A profile report is for account-level behavior or identity; a video report is for a particular post; a held-message report identifies one message; and the chat menu reports the conversation. Choosing the narrowest accurate target gives TikTok the clearest item to evaluate.
The person keeps contacting you
Do not rely on reporting alone when you need an immediate boundary. Block the account, or use Report and block from the direct-message flow. If the app’s labels differ, look for the same functions under the current profile or chat menu. Continue to use appropriate local support or emergency services if the situation presents an immediate safety risk.

Can I report only one direct message instead of the whole chat?
Yes. Open Inbox, enter the chat, press and hold the specific message, tap Report, choose a reason, and submit. To report the conversation, use More options at the top of the chat.
