There is no universal switch that removes every AI-generated image from every social network. TikTok has described a dedicated control that lets some users reduce AI-generated content in the For You recommendation mix. Instagram and Facebook offer broader recommendation controls, post-level feedback, and chronological views, but not an AI-image-only filter in the documented settings. YouTube’s controls are mainly creator disclosures and viewer labels; a label does not remove a video from recommendations.
The most effective approach is layered: turn down AI content where TikTok provides the option, use “Not interested” or “Show less” consistently on Meta platforms, spend more time in Following or Feeds views, and treat labels as clues rather than a complete detection system.
What you can and cannot block today
Social networks rank posts using signals such as accounts you follow, topics you watch, how long you pause, and the feedback you provide. Most of the controls documented by the platforms adjust those recommendations; they do not inspect every image and guarantee that an AI-made post will never appear.

Followed accounts, reposts, search results, and unlabelled synthetic images can still get through. No measured percentage shows how much any of these settings reduce exposure, so expect gradual improvement rather than a guaranteed or immediate change.

TikTok: turn down AI-generated content in For You
TikTok is the only platform in the documented guidance that describes a dedicated amount control for AI-generated content. It is intended to “dial things down” in the For You recommendation mix. TikTok also makes an important distinction: the setting tailors the range of recommendations instead of removing or replacing content entirely.
Check whether the control is available
- Open TikTok and go to the area for content or recommendation preferences.
- Open Manage Topics.
- Look for an option referring to AI-generated content or AIGC.
- If the slider is present, move it toward less AI-generated content and save the change.
- Return to For You and continue giving post-level feedback for anything that slips through.
TikTok described this feature using testing language. If you do not see it, that does not mean you missed a hidden setting; availability can depend on the account, app build, country, or the stage of the test. Update the app through your normal app store, reopen Manage Topics, and check again later. Do not assume that changing the slider will clean up your Following feed, search results, profile pages, or every other surface.
Use the other recommendation signals
- Use Not interested on an unwanted post instead of watching it through or opening its comments. The immediate feedback is more useful than silently scrolling past.
- Add recurring words or phrases to TikTok’s customizable keyword filters when the unwanted posts share a caption or topic. Filters are topic-based, not a reliable detector of synthetic imagery.
- Avoid replaying, sharing, or commenting on AI-image posts if you want fewer similar recommendations. Those actions can look like interest even when your intention is to criticize the image.
- Give positive engagement to the human-made subjects you actually want to see. Recommendation systems need both negative and positive signals.
These actions work on recommendation ranking, not on the existence of the post. A creator you follow can still publish an AI image, and a repost can reappear without the original context.
Instagram: reduce recommendations without an AI-only switch
The documented Instagram controls are general-purpose. Meta describes a Suggested Content Control Center, reachable from Settings or from the three-dot menu on a relevant recommendation. It also provides Not interested feedback. Neither is described as a switch that recognizes and blocks every AI-generated image.

Adjust suggested posts
- Open Instagram and enter Settings, then look for the area dedicated to suggested content or content preferences. On some posts, use the three-dot menu to reach the same controls.
- When a recommendation is unwanted, choose Not interested. If Instagram presents additional controls, use them to explain that you do not want similar recommendations.
- Review the Suggested Content controls and choose the least aggressive setting that still removes topics you do not want. The exact labels can change as Instagram updates its interface.
- For accounts whose work you value but whose recommendations you do not, use Following views or account-level mute and unfollow choices rather than repeatedly opening unwanted posts.
Spend more time in Following
Instagram’s Following view is a chronological-style way to see posts from accounts you follow, rather than relying exclusively on ranked suggestions. It is not an AI detector: a followed account can still post synthetic images. It does, however, reduce the number of recommendations from accounts and topics you never chose.
Open the feed selector when it appears at the top of the Instagram feed and choose the Following view. Because the selector and wording can move, use the current in-app label rather than relying on an old screenshot. Switch back to the default feed only when you want discovery recommendations.
Why repeated feedback matters
One Not interested tap is not a permanent block. Instagram may show a similar post from another account, especially when the image has no reliable AI marker. Apply the feedback to several examples, avoid interacting with the posts, and use Following when you want the most predictable feed. If a post violates a separate rule, such as impersonation or fraud, report that violation under the applicable reporting category; “AI-generated” by itself is not necessarily a policy violation.

Facebook’s documented options also operate at the recommendation level. Feed Preferences lets you manage what appears more often or less often, while post-level Show more and Show less feedback tells Facebook how to rank similar material. These settings are not presented as an AI-image filter.

Give post-level feedback
- On an unwanted recommendation, open the post’s options menu.
- Choose Show less or the closest current wording. Use Show more on posts that represent the human-made content you want to reinforce.
- Open Feed Preferences from Facebook’s settings and review controls for favorites, unfollowing, snoozing, and reconnecting. Reduce sources that repeatedly publish unwanted synthetic material.
Use the Feeds view
Facebook’s Feeds view emphasizes posts from selected sources instead of the fully ranked Home feed. It cannot identify AI images, and a followed page or friend can still share one, but it reduces exposure to recommendations from accounts you do not follow. Use Home for discovery and Feeds when you want a more controlled list.
Facebook can also show material that was reposted, embedded, or edited outside its own systems. If the original marker was lost, Feed Preferences cannot restore it. Treat the view as a way to control where recommendations come from, not proof that every image in it is human-created.
YouTube: labels provide context, not removal
The reviewed YouTube guidance concerns videos, including videos that contain AI-generated or meaningfully altered material. Creators are expected to disclose realistic synthetic or altered content, and YouTube may add labels using creator disclosures, internal signals, or metadata. YouTube states that a disclosure label alone does not change how a video is recommended or whether it can earn money.
There is no documented viewer setting that filters all AI-generated videos or images from recommendations. If a video is unwanted, use the options menu’s “Not interested” or “Don’t recommend channel” controls when available. Those controls address the source or topic generally; they do not guarantee that another channel’s synthetic video will be excluded.

Shorts, thumbnails, community posts, and search results can follow different ranking paths. A label on one video should not be treated as a platform-wide declaration about every image from that creator.
Why labels cannot provide a complete block
Labels are useful when they are present, but absence of a label is not proof that an image was made by a person. Meta says it uses industry-standard indicators for some AI-generated images while acknowledging that not all AI content can be identified and that invisible markers can be stripped. TikTok describes a combination of creator labels, detection models, and C2PA Content Credentials, but notes that labels may be lost when content is edited or reuploaded elsewhere.
Common reasons a label disappears
- A creator does not disclose the generation or editing process.
- A platform cannot detect the file’s origin with enough confidence.
- A screenshot, crop, export, or format conversion removes embedded provenance data.
- A reposting service strips metadata or the image is edited after its original label was applied.
- The image is a hybrid: a camera photo with small synthetic elements that do not trigger the platform’s threshold.
Visual clues such as distorted text, impossible reflections, inconsistent hands, or repeated textures can help you decide whether to investigate, but they are not a dependable automated test. Do not accuse a specific person solely because an image looks unusual.

- Start with the platform’s current controls. On TikTok, check Manage Topics for the AI-generated-content amount slider. On Instagram and Facebook, locate Suggested Content or Feed Preferences and learn where Not interested, Show less, Following, or Feeds are placed in your app.
- Choose a controlled feed when you are browsing casually. Instagram’s Following and Facebook’s Feeds views reduce ranked discovery. On TikTok, the For You slider is the documented AI-specific option; it still tunes rather than blocks.
- Give immediate negative feedback. Use the post or video menu instead of watching, replaying, commenting, or sharing an unwanted item.
- Reinforce the content you want. Follow reliable creators, save human-made work, and interact with those posts. Recommendation models need a clear positive signal.
- Reduce repeat sources. Mute, unfollow, snooze, or use “Don’t recommend channel” where a particular account repeatedly posts unwanted material.
- Reassess after several sessions. Ranking systems learn from a pattern of actions. A single setting change may not alter the next few posts, and no official source establishes a fixed reduction rate.
If AI images keep appearing
The setting is missing
Confirm that the app is updated, sign out and back in if the interface is stuck, and search the current Settings or content-preferences screen for Manage Topics or suggested-content controls. TikTok’s AI-content slider was described as a test, so it may simply not be enabled for your account. Do not install an unofficial app or browser extension that claims to unlock it.
The feed changed briefly, then reverted
Check whether you returned to a ranked Home or For You surface after using Following or Feeds. Also review whether you recently searched for, shared, or watched AI-image posts; those actions can outweigh older feedback. Repeat Not interested or Show less on each unwanted example and avoid opening the post to inspect it.
You see images from accounts you follow
Recommendation controls cannot prevent a followed account from publishing an AI image. Unfollow, mute, or move that account out of your primary view if the posts are consistently unwanted. If you want to keep following it for other reasons, a chronological or Following view may make the trade-off easier to manage, but it will not remove the account’s own posts.

A post has no AI label
Handle it as uncertain. Labels can be missing, stripped, or lost during editing and reupload. Use platform feedback based on whether you want the post in your feed, not on an unverified claim about how it was made. Report it only when it also violates a genuine policy such as deception, impersonation, or fraud.

Keep expectations realistic
The platforms describe these features as recommendation tools, not content erasers. TikTok’s own explanation says its AIGC setting is intended to tailor the diverse range of content rather than remove or replace content in feeds. Meta’s controls similarly adjust suggestions and feed order. YouTube’s disclosure guidance explicitly says a label alone does not alter recommendation behavior.
That distinction matters when deciding whether a setting “worked.” Success means that unwanted AI material appears less often in the surfaces controlled by the setting. It does not mean every post is screened, every label is accurate, or every account is affected. Availability, menu names, and account eligibility can change, so check the current app interface whenever you troubleshoot.
