There is no universal “hide all live streams” switch shared by YouTube, Facebook, and Twitch. YouTube lets you send Not interested feedback, suppress recommendations from a channel with Don’t recommend channel, and change history settings that influence Home. Twitch offers shelf-level Not Interested, channel blocking, and Content Classification Label filters. Facebook’s current video experience includes Live recommendations, but Meta’s published announcements do not document a current viewer control specifically for hiding recommended live videos. The controls are therefore platform- and surface-specific rather than a single format-wide ban.

How recommendation controls actually work

A live stream can appear in several places on the same service: a home feed, a recommendation shelf, an Up Next queue, a browse directory, search results, a subscription list, or a staff-curated carousel. Each surface can use different signals and rules. Removing one card from one shelf is not the same as blocking a channel, filtering a content category, or changing the history used to personalize an entire home page.

That distinction explains why a stream can disappear after you dismiss it and then appear elsewhere. Logged-in status, app version, device, language, region, followed accounts, watch history, and the type of surface all affect what is shown. Treat the following actions as controls for the scope described, not as guaranteed service-wide live-stream switches.

YouTube: reduce live-stream suggestions without disabling discovery

Dismiss an individual recommendation

  1. On an eligible recommendation surface, locate the live-stream card you do not want.
  2. Open the More menu beside the video.
  3. Select Not interested.

YouTube says that “Your ‘Not Interested’ and ‘Don’t recommend channel’ feedback may be used to tune your recommendations.” This is a feedback signal, not a permanent ban on live video as a format. It can change later suggestions, but YouTube does not describe it as removing every live stream from every surface.

Stop recommendations from a particular channel

When the option is offered for a recommendation, open the same More menu and choose Don’t recommend channel. This is a channel-level recommendation control. It is different from blocking a YouTube account and does not prevent you from searching for the channel or visiting it directly. The option may not appear on every card or in every app view.

Understand what changing history does

YouTube’s recommendation documentation identifies different signals for different surfaces. Home recommendations rely primarily on watch history, while suggestions associated with the video currently playing rely heavily on that video. You can manage or delete YouTube watch and search history through the history controls associated with your Google/YouTube account. If watch history is turned off and deleted and the account has no significant prior watch history, YouTube says video recommendations on Home can be removed.

This is a broad intervention. It can affect other history-dependent recommendations and does not function as a live-only filter. It also does not guarantee that a live stream will be absent from Up Next, search, subscriptions, or other areas whose signals differ from Home. Review the scope before deleting history merely to remove a few unwanted live cards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why a live stream can still appear

  • Different surface: Home, Up Next, search, and other recommendation areas do not necessarily use the same signals.
  • Fresh signals: A recent viewing action or the video currently playing can influence related suggestions even after you dismiss another card.
  • Followed channels: A channel you follow can still be encountered through subscriptions or direct visits, regardless of recommendation feedback.
  • Incomplete coverage: Not interested tunes future recommendations; it is not documented as a global block on the live format.

Use the narrowest control that matches your goal: dismiss individual cards when only a few are irrelevant, use Don’t recommend channel for a recurring source, and reserve history changes for situations where you accept their wider effect on Home personalization.

Twitch: hide shelves, block channels, or filter labeled content

Remove a recommendation from a shelf or collection

  1. On a recommended shelf or collection, find the stream, category, or section you do not want.
  2. Open its three-dot menu.
  3. Choose Not Interested.

Twitch describes this as removing the selected category, streamer, or section from that shelf or collection. Its legal recommendations explanation also says that logged-in users can remove recommended channels, categories, and other items with Not Interested. Because the action is tied to a shelf or collection, it should not be read as a permanent, service-wide ban on all live content of that type.

Block a channel for a stronger channel-level result

When a particular streamer is the problem, block the channel using Twitch’s channel controls. Twitch Help states: “Block a channel to remove it from your recommendations permanently.” The statement concerns Twitch recommendations; it does not promise that every possible reference to the channel disappears across the service. A direct search, a link someone sends you, or another surface can still provide a route to the channel.

Blocking is stronger than dismissing one shelf item, but it is still different from filtering an entire content classification. Use it when one channel repeatedly appears, rather than when you simply want fewer streams in a broad category.

Hide or blur streams by Content Classification Label

  1. Open your Twitch profile settings.
  2. Go to Content Preferences.
  3. Open Content Display Preferences.
  4. Choose the Content Classification Labels you want to hide or blur.

Twitch says streams carrying a filtered label will not be recommended or shown in category browsing or search. There are two important exceptions: followed streamers are exempt, and visiting a channel directly can still show its stream. Label preferences therefore reduce discovery through recommendations, browsing, and search without creating an absolute block on a followed or deliberately visited channel.

Account for Twitch’s front-page carousel

The front-page carousel is a special case. Twitch says it is curated by staff and “is not populated through an automated system or your interactions.” Blocking a channel removes that channel from the carousel for you. Other shelf selection and ordering can vary with region, language, device, login state, engagement, and watch history, and Twitch notes that live channels are prioritized more frequently. A control that changes an ordinary recommendation shelf may therefore have a different visible effect on the carousel.

What to expect across devices and surfaces

Twitch does not present every recommendation control identically on mobile, desktop, browse pages, and the front page. If Not Interested is missing, the item may not be on a supported recommendation shelf, you may be signed out, or the app and site may expose different menus. Blocking and label preferences are account-level choices, but the resulting visibility still has the followed-channel and direct-visit exceptions described above.

Facebook: Live is part of recommendations, but a verified live-only switch is not documented here

What Meta confirms

In an April 2024 announcement, Meta described an updated Facebook full-screen video experience with a consistent design for Reels, longer videos, and Live videos. The announcement says viewers receive more relevant video recommendations based on their interests. Meta’s August 31, 2020 recommendation announcement likewise describes personalized recommendations across its apps, including Pages, Groups, and Events, based on interests and actions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those announcements establish that Live videos can be recommended and that personalization is part of the video experience. They do not provide current, viewer-facing instructions for hiding recommended live videos by creator, category, or placement.

What cannot be stated reliably

The official material cited here does not establish a current Facebook control equivalent to YouTube’s Don’t recommend channel, Twitch’s channel block for recommendations, or Twitch’s Content Classification Label filter specifically for recommended Live videos. Generic hide-post or unfollow advice should not be presented as a verified live-specific solution. Facebook app and desktop menus can change by version, region, and account, so an option visible to one person may not be available to another.

If your goal is specifically to reduce recommended Live streams, check the menu attached to the individual video or the current video-feed settings shown in your own signed-in Facebook interface, but treat any result as surface-specific unless Meta’s current Help Center documentation explicitly says otherwise. The cited Meta announcements support the existence of Live recommendations, not a guaranteed method for disabling them.

Choose the least disruptive control

Start by defining what you are trying to remove. If one irrelevant stream is cluttering a feed, use the single-card feedback option. If the same creator appears repeatedly, use the channel-level action where available. If the problem is a class of mature or otherwise labeled content on Twitch, use Content Classification Label preferences rather than blocking many individual channels. Broad history changes belong at the end of the process because they can reshape unrelated recommendations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider reversibility as well. A dismissal is a relatively narrow signal and can be followed by normal browsing. A channel block is a stronger account preference that you may later need to undo in settings. Turning off or deleting YouTube history can alter the character of Home recommendations beyond live streams; it may take additional activity before personalization becomes useful again. None of these choices is required to keep using search, subscriptions, or direct channel links.

Keep a simple surface checklist when testing a change: note whether the unwanted card was on Home, Up Next, a Twitch shelf, browse, search, or a carousel; apply the action there; then check the other surfaces you actually use. This avoids concluding that a control failed merely because the same channel appeared in a different part of the service.

Control comparison

Platform and action Scope Typical surface Strength Important exceptions or limits
YouTube: Not interested One recommendation and its future tuning signal Eligible recommendation cards, including Home or other feeds Feedback; not a global ban Different surfaces use different signals; availability varies by card
YouTube: Don’t recommend channel A channel’s recommendations Eligible recommendation cards Channel-level recommendation suppression Not the same as blocking an account; does not remove search or direct visits
YouTube: history controls Broad personalization inputs, especially Home Home and other history-dependent experiences Broadest change Can alter other recommendations; not live-only; Up Next uses different signals
Twitch: Not Interested A channel, category, or section on a shelf or collection Recommended shelves and collections Removes the selected item from that shelf or collection Controls are not identical across surfaces
Twitch: block channel A specific channel’s recommendations Recommendations and front-page carousel Stronger channel-specific removal Does not assert that every reference disappears; direct access can still exist
Twitch: Content Classification Labels Selected labeled content categories Recommendations, category browsing, and search Hide or blur filtered labels Followed streamers are exempt; direct channel visits can still show streams
Facebook Live recommendations Live videos within Facebook’s personalized video experience Full-screen video experience and related feeds Not stated by Meta in the cited announcements Current live-specific viewer steps are not established here

A practical, least-disruptive workflow

  1. Identify where the stream appeared. Note whether it was a home feed, a recommendation shelf, Up Next, browse/search, or a front-page carousel. The correct control depends on that surface.
  2. Start with local feedback. Use Not interested on the individual card or shelf item where the platform provides it. This preserves ordinary discovery better than changing all history.
  3. Escalate only for a recurring source. On YouTube, choose Don’t recommend channel when available. On Twitch, block the channel if repeated recommendations from that streamer are the issue.
  4. Use category filtering for a classification problem. On Twitch, set Content Classification Label preferences when you want to reduce labeled categories across recommendation, browse, and search surfaces.
  5. Review broad history controls last. On YouTube, changing or deleting watch history can change Home recommendations more widely than live streams alone.
  6. Recheck the result on the surfaces you use. A change on Home may not alter Up Next; a Twitch shelf preference may not govern the staff-curated carousel; a followed channel can remain visible despite label filtering.

Troubleshooting when recommendations keep returning

The menu option is missing

Confirm that you are signed in and that you opened the menu attached to a recommendation rather than a player or comment menu. YouTube exposes its recommendation actions only on eligible surfaces. Twitch’s Not Interested action is associated with recommended shelves and collections, while the front-page carousel follows separate curation rules. App updates, device type, language, region, and account state can change which labels are shown.

The same channel appears after dismissal

A single dismissal is feedback, not a permanent channel block. On YouTube, use Don’t recommend channel when the option appears. On Twitch, block the channel for the stronger recommendation-level action. Neither action should be interpreted as deleting the channel from search, subscriptions, or a direct URL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Filtered Twitch content is still visible

Check whether you follow the streamer or opened the channel directly. Twitch’s label filtering exempts followed streamers, and a direct visit can still display the stream. Also distinguish a filtered label from a blocked channel: labels target classified content, whereas blocking targets a channel.

YouTube Home changed more than expected

Watch-history settings influence more than live-stream cards. YouTube says Home relies primarily on watch history, and turning off and deleting history can remove Home recommendations when there is no significant prior watch history. Other history-dependent experiences can change as well, so restore or adjust those settings if the broader effect is not acceptable.

Facebook still shows Live videos

That behavior is consistent with Meta’s description of a video experience that includes Live and personalized recommendations. Because a current official live-specific hiding procedure is not established here, do not assume that a generic feed action permanently suppresses Live. Check the exact menu and account settings currently presented by Facebook and verify their stated scope before relying on them.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I turn off every live-stream recommendation on YouTube?

YouTube does not document a universal live-only switch. Use Not interested for individual cards, Don’t recommend channel for recurring sources, and history controls only if you accept their broader effect on Home and other history-dependent features.

What is the difference between YouTube’s two recommendation options?

Not interested dismisses a recommendation and supplies a tuning signal. Don’t recommend channel targets recommendations from that channel. Neither is an account block, and neither removes the channel from search or direct visits.

Why does Twitch show a channel after I selected Not Interested?

Twitch ties Not Interested to a recommended shelf or collection. The same channel can appear on another surface, including a staff-curated front-page carousel, unless you use the stronger channel-blocking control.

Do Twitch Content Classification Labels block followed streamers?

No. Twitch says filtered-label streams will not be recommended or shown in category browsing or search, but followed streamers are exempt. A direct visit to a channel can also show its stream.

Does blocking a Twitch channel remove every trace of it?

Twitch Help says blocking removes a channel from your recommendations permanently. That statement concerns recommendations; it does not promise removal from every search result, link, or deliberate direct visit.

Can Facebook hide recommended Live videos by category or creator?

Meta’s April 2024 and August 31, 2020 announcements confirm personalized video recommendations that include Live, but they do not document current viewer steps for a live-specific creator or category filter. Check your current signed-in menus and treat any control as limited to the surface where it appears.

Will changing YouTube watch history affect subscriptions?

History controls primarily change personalization signals, especially for Home. They are not described as removing subscriptions, but they can alter other history-dependent recommendations. Up Next and other surfaces may continue using different signals.

Why are the menu labels different on my phone and computer?

Recommendation controls can depend on app version, device, language, region, login state, and the specific surface. Look for the menu attached to the recommendation card itself, and do not assume a control available on desktop must appear in the mobile app.

The Bottom Line

Use the narrowest control that solves the problem: dismiss a single card, suppress a recurring YouTube channel, block a Twitch channel, or filter Twitch labels. Treat YouTube history changes as broad personalization edits, not live-only filters. Facebook confirms that Live appears in personalized video recommendations, but a current official live-specific hiding procedure is not documented, so avoid promising a universal switch.
