Use the control that matches the problem: Block channel removes a channel from recommendations across Twitch, Not Interested tunes only the shelf where an item appeared, and Content Display Preferences hides or blurs selected Content Classification Labels. To silence audio, mute the player or browser tab. Blocking a person stops interaction and recommendation signals, but it does not stop that person from watching your stream.
Twitch labels and menus can differ by device, account, and region. Look for the documented options on the channel card, username card, whisper settings, or profile settings rather than assuming every screen has the same click path.
Choose the right Twitch control
These features solve different problems. Picking the wrong one can leave an unwanted channel in recommendations, hide less than expected, or block chat without preventing someone from viewing your broadcast.

Block a channel that keeps appearing
Choose channel blocking when the same streamer repeatedly appears in Home recommendations, navigation recommendations, the Following page, or other discovery surfaces. Twitch says blocking a channel removes it from recommendations across Twitch; it is broader than dismissing one card but narrower than preventing access to Twitch itself.
How to block the channel
- Find the unwanted channel in a recommendation, carousel, directory, or other discovery surface.
- Open the item’s available options menu, usually represented by three dots or a similar overflow control.
- Select the option labeled Block channel (wording can vary slightly by device).
- Confirm if Twitch asks you to confirm the change.
The channel can disappear from the Home carousel, recommendations in navigation or the Following page, and other recommendation locations described by Twitch. The setting targets discovery and interaction; it does not erase the channel from Twitch. If you deliberately search for the streamer or open the channel page from a direct link, you can still watch it.
When channel blocking is the better choice
- You do not want a particular streamer recommended anywhere, rather than only on one shelf.
- You want to keep watching other channels in the same category.
- You do not need to stop a person from contacting you in chat or whispers; use user blocking for that.
Blocking a channel and blocking a user are separate decisions. A channel recommendation may be suppressed while the individual’s chat or whisper activity remains possible unless you also block the user.

Use Not Interested for one recommendation shelf
Not Interested is recommendation feedback, not a platform-wide block. Twitch says it removes the channel, category, or section from the shelf or collection where you selected it and can improve recommendations on a later Home-page visit. It does not prevent you from watching the content.
Dismiss an item
- Locate the recommendation you do not want on its shelf or collection.
- Open that item’s three-dot options menu.
- Choose Not Interested.
The item should be removed from that particular shelf. Because the action is tied to the place where the recommendation appeared, the same channel or category could still appear elsewhere. Use Block channel when you want broader channel-level recommendation removal.
Undo the feedback
Twitch says recommendation feedback can be undone immediately or managed in settings. If you selected the wrong item, use the undo prompt that appears after dismissal when available. If that prompt has disappeared, open the relevant recommendation or content-preference settings and look for the control to review or reverse your feedback. The exact placement can change between web, mobile, and television apps.

Hide or blur types of content with Content Display Preferences
If the issue is a category of material rather than one streamer, use Twitch’s Content Display Preferences. These settings work with Content Classification Labels (CCLs), which identify types of content such as mature themes. You can choose to hide a label entirely or blur its presentation, depending on the option Twitch provides for that label.

Open the preferences
- Open your Twitch profile menu.
- Go to Settings or profile settings, then Content Preferences.
- Open Content Display Preferences.
- Review the available Content Classification Labels and choose whether each selected label is hidden or blurred.
- Save or apply the changes if Twitch presents a save button.
Twitch’s documented path is under profile settings and Content Preferences. Labels and controls may be adjusted for local legal requirements, so the list can differ by region.
What hiding a label does
When a CCL is hidden, Twitch says content carrying that label is excluded from recommendations and does not appear in category browsing or search. This is a discovery filter, not an absolute access restriction. A channel you follow remains an exception, and visiting a channel directly can still expose the labeled stream.
Blur is less aggressive: it obscures the presentation of labeled material while retaining the listing. Choose blur when you want a warning before opening the stream; choose hide when you do not want that label in discovery surfaces.
Sexual Themes thumbnails
Twitch says thumbnails carrying the Sexual Themes label are blurred by default for all users. Your content preferences can still affect how labeled material is surfaced, but the default thumbnail treatment is separate from muting audio or blocking a channel.
Block a person from chat and whispers
Use user blocking when the problem is an individual’s contact rather than their channel’s recommendations. Twitch says blocking prevents the person’s messages from appearing in chats, prevents them from whispering to you, and works in both directions. It also affects follows, subscriptions, and recommendation signals. Twitch says the blocked person is not notified.

Block from a username card
- Open the person’s username card in chat or another Twitch surface that exposes the card.
- Select the three-dot options menu.
- Choose Block and confirm if prompted.
If the username card is unavailable, Twitch documents blocking through whisper settings. Open the conversation or whisper controls, select the user’s options menu, and choose the block command there.
Use a chat command
Twitch’s Chat Commands reference documents these commands:
/block usernameblocks the account represented byusername./unblock usernameremoves your block for that account.
Replace username with the exact Twitch name. If commands are disabled or unavailable in the surface you are using, return to the username card or whisper settings and use the menu control instead.
What a user block does not do
Blocking is a privacy and interaction control, not a channel ban and not a viewing ban. Twitch’s current blocking guidance states: “Blocking someone prevents chat and whisper interactions, but it does not prevent them from viewing your streams.” A blocked person can therefore still open and watch your livestream unless you apply the separate channel-level restrictions described below.
Understand blocking, banning, and suspension
These terms describe different authorities and outcomes:
User blocking
You apply a block to protect your own account from another user’s messages, whispers, follows, subscriptions, and recommendation interactions. The person is not notified, and the block does not stop them from viewing your stream.

Channel ban
A channel owner or moderator applies a ban to control participation in that channel. A ban stops the person from chatting there. By default, a banned viewer may still watch the livestream. Twitch identifies an additional channel setting that prevents banned users from viewing livestreams; enable that setting when viewing access, not only chat access, is the goal.

A suspension is Twitch’s own enforcement action across the service. It is not something a viewer can substitute for a block, and it should not be used as a synonym for a channel ban or personal block.
Use the narrowest control that matches the problem: block the user for account-level contact, ban the user for participation in your channel, and rely on Twitch enforcement only when the platform takes action under its rules.
Mute a stream without unfollowing or hiding it
Muting changes audio only. Select the speaker control in the Twitch player, or mute the browser tab using the browser’s tab audio control. Leave the video playing if you still want to watch the picture.
Muting does not remove the channel from Home recommendations, category pages, search, or shelves. It also does not block chat, whispers, follows, or subscriptions. If the stream is live and video continues to play, Twitch says the muted player or browser tab still counts as a view. The company explains this in Understanding Viewer Count vs. Viewer List.
Choose mute when
- You want to keep watching the video while silencing commentary or music.
- You are using another audio source and do not want to stop playback.
- You want a temporary audio change rather than a recommendation or interaction change.
Choose another control when
- Repeated recommendations are the annoyance: block the channel or choose Not Interested.
- A type of labeled content is unwanted: adjust Content Display Preferences.
- A person is harassing you in chat or whispers: block the user, then use channel moderation tools if you own or moderate the channel.
Common situations and the fastest fix

If a control appears not to work
The channel still appears after Not Interested
Not Interested is limited to the shelf or collection where it was used. Try the same control on another shelf, or block the channel for broader recommendation removal. A direct visit to the channel is not evidence that the block failed; Twitch allows direct viewing.

A hidden label appears in search or browsing
Reopen Content Display Preferences and confirm that the label is set to hide rather than blur. Check whether you are following the channel or visiting it directly, because Twitch lists both as exceptions to hidden-label discovery filtering. Regional requirements can also alter available settings.
The blocked person can still watch
That is expected for a user block. Blocking removes interaction and recommendation contact but does not prevent viewing. If you own or moderate the channel, use a channel ban and enable the channel option that prevents banned users from viewing livestreams.
The stream is muted but still counted as a view
Muting affects sound, not playback. Twitch counts a viewer when live video continues in the player or muted browser tab. Stop playback or leave the channel if you do not want the stream counted as an active view.
The menu labels differ
Twitch’s recommendation surfaces and settings labels can change, and mobile, desktop, console, and television apps do not always expose identical menus. Start from the item’s three-dot menu, the username card, whisper settings, or profile settings and look for the documented feature name. If a command is unavailable, use the corresponding menu.
Keep the distinctions clear
For discovery, use Block channel for broad recommendation removal and Not Interested for one shelf. For a class of material, configure Content Display Preferences. For sound, use Mute. For a person’s contact, use Block user; for preventing a participant from chatting in your channel, use a channel ban, with the viewing restriction enabled when necessary. None of these viewer controls is the same as a Twitch-wide suspension.
