The reliable way to block malvertising is layered protection: update your operating system, browser and security software automatically; enable the browser’s dangerous-site and download warnings; keep pop-up and redirect blocking on; install a reputable content blocker from the official extension store; and use protective DNS or web filtering on managed networks. Never use an advertisement as the path to a download or login—type the official address or use a bookmark instead.
What malvertising is and why an ad blocker is not enough
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) defines malvertising as “the use of malicious or hijacked website advertisements to spread malware.” Criminals can insert an ad into a legitimate advertising network, compromise an ad-serving account or use an ad to start a redirect chain. The page you visit may be reputable while the advertising supply behind it is not.
A malicious ad can open a new tab, send the browser through several redirects, present a fake update message or load an exploit or malware payload. CISA warns that a compromise can occur even when you do not click an ad, because advertising code can execute or redirect in the background. Carefully tailored ads can also target a particular person, organization or location.
Malvertising is therefore different from an ordinary unwanted banner. A normal ad may be annoying or track activity; a malicious ad is intended to mislead, redirect, install unwanted software or expose credentials. You cannot identify every dangerous ad by its appearance, brand logo or placement on a familiar website.
That is why blocking visible banners alone is insufficient. Use controls at several layers:
- Device layer: automatic updates, security software and malware scans.
- Browser layer: Safe Browsing, SmartScreen or equivalent deceptive-content and dangerous-download protection.
- Page layer: pop-up, redirect and unwanted-content blocking.
- Network layer: protective DNS, web proxies, filtering, firewalls or browser isolation where an organization manages the connection.
- Behavior layer: reaching software and accounts through typed addresses or bookmarks rather than ads.
Each layer addresses a different failure. A content blocker can reduce how many advertising scripts load, while a browser warning can stop a known phishing page or dangerous download. Protective DNS can block a known malicious domain before the browser connects. None of these controls is a guarantee by itself.

Set up the essential protections first
1. Turn on automatic updates
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends automatic updates for security software, the operating system, the web browser and phones. Updates close browser and operating-system flaws that malicious advertising can exploit. Do not postpone a browser restart indefinitely after an update, and do not install an update offered by a pop-up; use the browser’s normal update screen instead.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Enable automatic operating-system updates and automatic browser updates.
- Allow your security software to update its detection data automatically.
- Restart when the operating system or browser requests it, especially after a security update.
- On phones and tablets, keep both the operating system and the browser current rather than relying only on an app’s own update notice.
An update prompt inside an advertisement is not the same as a browser update. Close the page and check the browser’s About or update screen, or the operating system’s normal update mechanism. This distinction prevents a fake “critical update” from becoming the malware installation path.
2. Enable the browser’s dangerous-site and download warnings
These protections are the browser’s first check against phishing pages, deceptive content and unsafe files. Keep them at their strongest normal setting unless a security administrator has given you a specific reason to change them.
| Browser | Relevant protection | What it can warn about |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome | Safe Browsing | Suspicious downloads, dangerous sites, HTTPS exceptions, encrypted archives and fake update pop-ups. |
| Firefox | Protection against deceptive content and dangerous downloads | Deceptive sites and harmful files, with a warning before a dangerous file is blocked. |
| Edge | Microsoft Defender SmartScreen | Known phishing and malware sites and suspicious downloads; keep automatic browser updates enabled. |
Menu wording changes between desktop and mobile releases, but the settings are normally under a browser’s privacy, security or site-settings area. If a warning page appears, stop and verify the destination through a known bookmark or a typed official address rather than overriding the warning.
These warnings are particularly valuable after a redirect. A page that claims your browser, video player or security software is out of date may be trying to make you bypass the browser’s normal protections. Treat the warning as a reason to leave the page, not as an invitation to download a replacement from the advertisement.

3. Keep pop-up and redirect blocking enabled
Pop-up controls prevent a malicious ad from opening extra windows or tabs. Redirect controls reduce forced navigation to a scam, fake support page or malware-hosting site. They cannot make every destination safe, but they remove common ways an ad attempts to take control of the browsing flow.
- Chrome: pop-ups are blocked by default. In Settings, open Privacy and security, then Site settings, and review Pop-ups and redirects. Use per-site exceptions only when a trusted service genuinely requires a pop-up.
- Firefox: its pop-up blocker works with third-party redirect blocking. In Settings, open Privacy & Security and review the permissions and blocking options. Add exceptions only for specific trusted sites.
- Edge: review the Pop-ups and redirects permission in Settings under Cookies and site permissions. Leave blocking on and create narrow exceptions instead of disabling it globally.
Some legitimate banking, payment, scheduling and authentication features use pop-up windows. If one fails, add an exception for that exact site, complete the task, and remove the exception if it is no longer needed. Do not make a global exception merely because one page requests it.

A useful rule is to distinguish a site exception from a browser-wide change. An exception for the exact banking domain limits the exposure; turning off blocking for every site leaves unrelated pages free to open windows and redirect you. Review exceptions periodically because a permission granted for a one-time task can otherwise remain indefinitely.
4. Add a reputable content blocker
Mozilla identifies uBlock Origin and Adblock Plus as add-ons that block advertising and unwanted content. Install an extension only from your browser’s official extension store, check that the publisher is the expected one, and read the permissions before adding it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open the browser’s official extensions or add-ons store from the browser menu.
- Search for the blocker by its exact name and verify the publisher, ratings and update history.
- Review requested permissions. A blocker may need access to page content in order to filter it, but unexpected access to unrelated data deserves scrutiny.
- Install it, leave its default protection lists enabled, and update it when the store offers an update.
- If a trusted site breaks, use the blocker’s per-site allow-list for that site rather than turning the extension off everywhere.
Do not install a “special ad-free browser,” a cracked blocker or an extension offered by a pop-up. The official store provides a more accountable installation path and exposes the publisher and requested permissions. Remove extensions you no longer recognize or need; an abandoned or unfamiliar add-on is an unnecessary part of the attack surface.
Content blockers reduce the number of ads and ad scripts that reach your browser, but they are not antivirus software. The FTC states that blockers do not necessarily stop every advertisement or tracker and “don’t detect or block viruses or malware.” Keep the browser’s own warnings and your device security software enabled.
Understand what each control can and cannot do
| Control | Helps with | Does not replace |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic browser and operating-system updates | Closing known software weaknesses that malicious pages may exploit. | Safe browsing decisions or malware scanning. |
| Safe Browsing, SmartScreen or equivalent | Warnings for known deceptive sites, phishing destinations and dangerous downloads. | Protection from every newly created or undiscovered site. |
| Pop-up and redirect blocking | Reducing forced windows, tabs and navigation chains. | Verification that a page or download is legitimate. |
| Content-blocking extension | Filtering advertising and unwanted page content. | Antivirus detection or removal of malware. |
| Protective DNS and web filtering | Blocking known risky domains across managed devices. | Protection when a user bypasses policy or uses an unmanaged connection. |
This division explains why “I have an ad blocker” is not a complete security answer. A blocker may prevent a script or banner from appearing, yet a malicious link received elsewhere can still lead to a dangerous site. Conversely, browser warnings may identify a dangerous download that a content filter did not see. Keep the layers active together.
Use a safer route to downloads and logins
Do not click an ad to obtain software
The FTC’s advice is direct: “Don’t click on ads to download software.” An advertisement can imitate a legitimate vendor, rank above the real result or lead to a bundle containing unwanted software. If you want an application, type the vendor’s known address into the address bar or use a bookmark you created previously. Download through the vendor’s normal site or the operating system’s official app mechanism.
This applies even when the ad appears to use the correct logo, product name or spelling. Paid search placement is not authentication. If you are unsure of the address, find it through documentation you already trust or a bookmark created after independently verifying the site; do not let the advertisement choose the destination.
Do not use search ads as your login shortcut
The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) similarly recommends typing a business or financial institution’s URL directly into the address bar and using bookmarks for login sites. Inspect the address before entering a password, payment number or one-time code. A familiar logo, lock icon or convincing page design is not proof that the destination is genuine.

Use the same habit for email, cloud storage, payroll and work portals. A login page reached through a malicious redirect can capture credentials even if it looks perfect. If a page unexpectedly asks you to sign in again after an ad click, close it and open the service from your saved bookmark instead.
Handle “urgent” update and support messages as hostile
Fake browser-update, codec, security-scan and technical-support messages are common malvertising outcomes. Close the tab rather than clicking its button. If the page resists closing, use the browser’s normal close command or quit the browser through the operating system; do not call a phone number or install a tool displayed in the ad.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not grant a suspicious page notification permission, install an extension to “continue,” or disable browser protection to make a video play. Return to the official application or vendor site through a typed address or bookmark and check for updates there.
Controls for offices, schools and managed networks
Individual browser settings help, but organizations should assume that a single endpoint control can fail. CISA recommends combining advertisement-blocking software with protective DNS, web proxies, centralized DNS sinkholing, web filtering, firewalls and browser isolation where appropriate.
- Protective DNS: block known malicious domains before a browser connects.
- Web proxies and filtering: inspect and restrict risky destinations across managed devices.
- Browser isolation: execute untrusted web content away from the user’s local device.
- Centralized policies: enforce browser updates, Safe Browsing or SmartScreen, extension allow-lists and pop-up settings.
- Firewalls and endpoint security: provide additional detection and containment if a page or download gets through.
These controls are most useful when centrally managed. A company should document who can approve a site exception, how long it lasts and how it is reviewed. Personal devices on an organization’s network should follow the same minimum browser and update requirements as managed endpoints.
Administrators should decide in advance which extensions are allowed, how browser updates are enforced and where users report a suspicious redirect. A narrow exception process is safer than asking employees to disable filtering whenever a site fails. Protective DNS, proxies and isolation complement endpoint controls; they are not reasons to stop patching browsers or training users to avoid ad-based downloads.

| Decision factor | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Dangerous-download and phishing protection | Is Safe Browsing, SmartScreen or equivalent enabled by default, and can an administrator enforce it? |
| Pop-up and redirect controls | Are pop-ups blocked by default? Can third-party redirects be restricted? Can exceptions be limited to named sites? |
| Extension trust model | Does the official store identify publishers, permissions and updates clearly? Can an organization allow-list extensions? |
| Update cadence and enforcement | Can the browser update automatically, and can a managed environment require a minimum version? |
| Exception handling | Can you permit one trusted site without weakening protection for every other site? |
The safest choice is the browser that you can keep current and configure consistently. A fully updated browser with its warnings enabled is safer than an otherwise capable browser running an old version with protections disabled. Menu labels differ, so compare the actual settings available on the desktop, mobile or managed release you plan to use rather than relying on a feature name alone.
What to do after a suspicious ad or redirect
One unexpected redirect does not prove that malware was installed, but persistent symptoms require a deliberate response. The FTC lists changed home pages, automatic redirects, new toolbars or add-ons and repeated unexpected pop-ups as possible malware symptoms.
- Stop sensitive activity. Do not enter passwords, payment details, recovery codes or other confidential information on the affected device.
- Close the suspicious page. Do not click buttons claiming to clean, update or call for help. If necessary, quit the browser through the operating system.
- Use a different, clean device to change passwords. Start with email, financial, work and password-manager accounts. Enable multifactor authentication where available.
- Update security software and the operating system. Use the normal settings or vendor application, not a link supplied by the suspicious page.
- Run a full security scan. Follow the security software’s remediation instructions and restart if requested.
- Review browser changes. Remove unfamiliar extensions, restore a known home page and check the default search engine and notification permissions.
- Escalate when cleanup fails. If redirects, pop-ups or other symptoms continue, disconnect the device from sensitive work and seek qualified professional help.
If you entered credentials into a suspected imitation site, treat those credentials as exposed even if the page later disappeared. Change them from a clean device and monitor the associated accounts for unauthorized activity. If the affected device belongs to an employer or school, report the event through its security process so administrators can check other endpoints and network logs.
Common mistakes that weaken protection
- Installing a blocker from a random download site: use only the official browser store.
- Disabling every warning to make a page load: create a narrow, temporary exception for a trusted site instead.
- Assuming an ad blocker replaces security software: it filters content; it does not detect or remove malware.
- Trusting the first search result: search placement, including paid placement, does not authenticate the destination.
- Clicking a “browser update” banner: update through the browser’s own menu or the operating system.
- Ignoring a changed homepage or new toolbar: those changes can indicate unwanted software and warrant a scan.
- Leaving broad site exceptions in place: review and remove exceptions after the legitimate task is complete.
- Assuming no click means no risk: CISA warns that malicious advertising can compromise a network without a user selecting the ad.
- Using a familiar logo as proof: inspect the address and reach the service through a bookmark or typed URL.
A short maintenance routine
Once the protections are configured, maintenance is simple:
- Confirm automatic updates are still enabled after major operating-system or browser changes.
- Review installed extensions periodically and remove anything you no longer recognize or need.
- Check the browser’s blocked-pop-up and notification exceptions for entries you did not create.
- Keep security software active and run a scan when the device shows unexplained redirects, toolbars or pop-ups.
- Use bookmarks or typed addresses for software downloads, account logins and financial services.
- Recheck managed-device policies when staff, browsers or network arrangements change.
Malvertising is an exposure problem, not a single-setting problem. Combining current software, browser warnings, redirect controls, content filtering, network defenses and cautious navigation sharply reduces the ways a malicious advertisement can reach you or turn a legitimate page into a dangerous one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can malvertising infect me if I never click the ad?
Yes. CISA warns that malicious advertising can compromise a network without a click because advertising code may execute or trigger a redirect in the background. Keep software patched and browser warnings, redirect blocking and security software enabled.
Does an ad blocker stop viruses and malware?
No. The FTC says ad blockers do not necessarily block every ad or tracker and do not detect or block viruses or malware. Use a reputable blocker to reduce exposure, but keep browser protections and security software active.

Which browser is safest against malicious ads?
Chrome, Firefox and Edge all document relevant protections. Compare dangerous-download and phishing warnings, pop-up and redirect controls, extension trust and update enforcement. The safest choice is the browser you can keep current and configure consistently.
Should I disable pop-up blocking when a site needs a pop-up?
Keep blocking enabled and create an exception only for the exact trusted site that requires one. Remove the exception when the task is finished; do not disable pop-up blocking globally.
How can I tell whether a browser-update pop-up is real?
Do not use the pop-up’s button. Close the page and check the browser’s normal update screen or the operating system’s update mechanism. A message inside an advertisement is not proof that an update is needed.
What should I do after an unexpected redirect?
Stop entering sensitive information, close the page, and use a clean device to change passwords if you entered credentials. Update security software, run a full scan, review extensions and browser settings, and seek professional help if redirects or pop-ups persist.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhere should I install a content blocker?
Use only the browser’s official extension or add-on store. Verify the exact publisher, permissions and update history, and use a per-site allow-list when a trusted site breaks instead of disabling the blocker everywhere.
Is typing a URL really safer than clicking a search ad?
It avoids letting a paid or malicious advertisement choose the destination. The FTC and FBI’s IC3 recommend typing the official address or using a bookmark for software downloads and account logins, then checking the address before entering information.
The Bottom Line
Layer your defenses: update automatically, keep Safe Browsing or SmartScreen and dangerous-download warnings on, block pop-ups and redirects, install content blockers only from official stores, and use protective DNS or filtering on managed networks. Treat every ad-based download or login path as untrusted—type the official URL or use a bookmark instead.
