The most reliable approach is layered: configure the child’s phone and account first, then restrict the browsers and services they actually use, and finally add mobile-network or home-broadband controls where available. Test every layer on the child’s device. No single filter covers every browser, app, account, network or type of content, so combine technical limits with an age-appropriate conversation about what to do when something upsetting appears.

Start with the right level of restriction

Choose settings according to the child’s age, maturity, the apps they use and how much independence you want them to have. A filter that is too loose may miss material; one that is too strict can block homework, health information or ordinary websites and create a constant approval workload.

Approach What it does Best fit Main trade-off
Limit adult or explicit websites Uses a filter to block or reduce access to sites identified as unsuitable. Older children who need normal web access with a basic safety layer. Filtering is imperfect and can miss content or block legitimate pages.
Approved-sites-only browsing Allows only websites a parent has explicitly approved. Younger children or a tightly managed first phone. Parents must approve school, services and new everyday sites.
Multiple layers Combines phone/account controls with browser, app, carrier and home-network settings. Families that need broader coverage across devices and networks. More settings to maintain and test; layers can have different scopes.

Start with the child’s own account rather than relying on a parent’s account with a password. A child using an unsupervised account, a private browsing session or a different browser may bypass a control that was configured elsewhere.

Block websites on an iPhone

Apple’s current UK support instructions place website restrictions in the family controls. On the parent’s iPhone, use this route where the current iOS and family setup expose it:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Family, then select the child’s name.
  3. Open Apps & Websites.
  4. Tap Restrictions.
  5. Under Filtering for websites, choose Limit Adult Websites or Ask to Browse.

Apple also describes Screen Time web-content choices as Unrestricted, Limit Adult Websites and Only Approved Websites. Depending on the iOS version, the child’s age and whether Family Sharing is configured, labels or menu locations can differ. Follow the labels shown on the current device rather than an older screenshot.

Choose between filtering and an allowlist

Limit Adult Websites is the more convenient option for a child who needs to reach many ordinary sites. It relies on Apple’s classification and can miss material, so it should not be treated as a complete block.

Ask to Browse corresponds to an approved-sites-only approach. The child requests access when a site is not already allowed, and a parent decides whether to permit it. This is a more restrictive starting point for a younger child, but you will need to add legitimate school, transport, library, health and everyday sites as they arise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the same restrictions area to review allowed and blocked apps and websites. If a child can install a different browser, social app or video app, a Safari-only rule will not address the content reached through that app. Restrict installation or require approval for new apps when that is appropriate for your family.

Check the child’s device, not only the parent’s

After saving the setting, switch to the child’s phone and try a site that should be blocked. Check Safari and any other browser installed. Confirm that the child is using the managed family account and that the restriction is not being applied only to a different profile. Menu names and available options can change after an iOS update, so repeat this check after major software or account changes.

Block websites on Android with Family Link

Family Link’s web controls apply when the child has a supervised Google account on a supported Android device or Chromebook. In the parent’s Family Link app:

  1. Select the child.
  2. Tap Controls.
  3. Open Google Chrome and Web.
  4. Choose the browsing mode that matches the child’s needs.
  5. Add individual sites or domains to the approved or blocked lists as required.

Google documents three broad modes:

Family Link mode Behaviour Practical use
Allow all sites except blocked Normal browsing is available unless a parent has blocked a site or domain. Older children who need broad access and have specific sites that must be restricted.
Try to block explicit sites Chrome attempts to identify and block explicit material. A general filter when an allowlist would be impractical.
Only allow approved sites Browsing is limited to sites a parent has approved. Younger children or a phone used for a small set of known activities.

Google explicitly says the explicit-site filter is not perfect. Treat it as a reduction in risk, not a promise that every inappropriate page, image, video or link will be stopped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add rules at the correct level

When you block a domain, the rule can cover variants such as subdomains. An individual website rule may not cover every related address. If a service uses several domains, test the addresses your child actually visits and add each necessary rule rather than assuming one page represents the whole service.

Family Link can show requests for sites that the child wants to visit. Review those requests in context: a blocked page may be unsuitable, or it may be a legitimate school or public-service page that needs approval.

Understand Family Link’s device limits

Family Link device supervision is intended for supported Android devices and Chromebooks. Google states that iPhones, iPads and computers other than Chromebooks cannot be supervised as devices by Family Link.

On an iPhone or iPad, Google’s separate guidance says most supervision settings, including Chrome website restrictions, do not work when the child is signed in to Google apps. Chrome controls also do not become an iPhone-wide web filter. A child may sign out of Chrome or use another browser, so use Apple’s Screen Time controls for the iPhone itself and treat any Google setting as limited to the supported account, app or device context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cover browsers, apps and services individually

Phone-level controls do not automatically govern every place where content appears. Make an inventory of what the child uses:

  • Browsers such as Safari, Chrome or another installed browser.
  • Search services, including image and video search.
  • Video, livestreaming and social services.
  • Messaging apps where links, images or videos can be sent.
  • App stores and game platforms.
  • Cloud drives, forums or web views opened inside another app.

Turn on each service’s own child, restricted or safe-search setting where it provides one. Set age limits and approval requirements in the app store. A web filter may not inspect material delivered inside an app, and an app’s setting may not affect content opened in a separate browser.

For messaging and social apps, review privacy and contact settings as well as content filters. Limiting who can contact the child and who can add them to groups addresses risks that a website block cannot. Explain that links from friends can lead to material the app’s own filter did not classify.

Add mobile-provider and home-network controls

Mobile networks in the UK

Ofcom says UK mobile providers offer free parental-control services intended to limit internet content to material suitable for under-18s. Ofcom also warns that controls may not be switched on automatically. Check the provider account or contact the network and ask for confirmation that the child’s line has the intended restriction enabled.

This guidance is specific to the UK. Availability, activation steps, age categories and the content covered can differ by provider, account and country. A mobile-network setting is an additional layer, not a substitute for the phone and account controls above.

Home broadband and Wi-Fi

Many home broadband services provide a family or content-filter setting. Use the provider’s account controls to restrict inappropriate material for devices connected to the home Wi-Fi, then test the child’s phone while it is on that network.

A home-network rule normally applies only while the phone uses that network. It may not apply when the child switches to mobile data, a friend’s Wi-Fi, public Wi-Fi or a personal hotspot. Conversely, a mobile-provider filter may not govern a phone connected to another network. This is why network controls should be treated as separate layers with separate tests.

Test the complete setup before relying on it

Official UK guidance recommends checking that controls work before giving a device to a child. Use a repeatable test rather than assuming that a setting saved successfully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the intended rules. Write down which sites, apps, browsers and services should be restricted and which mode is active on the phone.
  2. Test a known blocked website. Use the child’s phone and account, not only the parent’s device. Confirm the expected block or approval prompt appears.
  3. Test every installed browser. Repeat the check in Safari, Chrome and any other browser. If a browser is not needed, remove it or require approval for its installation.
  4. Test apps that display web content. Check video, social, messaging, search and game apps separately. Look for their own restricted modes and age settings.
  5. Test both Wi-Fi and mobile data. A home-broadband rule can behave differently from a mobile-provider rule.
  6. Check sign-in state. Confirm the child is signed in to the supervised account and cannot simply sign out to reach a less restricted session.
  7. Check an approved site. Make sure school and everyday services still work. Add legitimate sites to the allowlist when necessary.
  8. Repeat after changes. Recheck after an operating-system update, a new browser, a new account, a device reset or a change to the home network.

What to do when a control does not work

Symptom Likely explanation Action
A blocked page opens in another browser. The rule is scoped to one browser, account or service. Apply the phone-level restriction, remove or restrict the alternate browser, and test again.
Family Link works on Android but not on an iPhone. Family Link does not supervise an iPhone as a device, and Chrome controls have documented iOS limitations. Use Apple’s Screen Time controls for the iPhone and configure service-level settings separately.
A site is blocked on Wi-Fi but opens on mobile data. The home-broadband filter does not cover the mobile network. Check the mobile-provider control and test the line while mobile data is enabled.
A school or health site is incorrectly blocked. An allowlist or automatic filter has classified a legitimate page as unsuitable. Verify the full address and add it to the approved list if it is appropriate.
The child receives no approval prompt. The phone may be using an unmanaged account, an unsupported device or a different app. Check the account, device compatibility, browser and app in which the request was made.
A rule stops working after an update. Menu locations, account links or installed apps may have changed. Review the current settings, reinstall the supervision link if needed, and run the complete test checklist again.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Match controls to age and independence

Use the least permissive setting that is practical for the child’s current needs, then loosen it deliberately as skills and judgment improve. An allowlist can be suitable for a first phone, while an older child may need broad access for school and hobbies with explicit-site filtering, app approvals and regular conversations.

Consider the child’s actual usage rather than the phone brand alone. A device used only for calls and school portals needs a different setup from one used for livestreams, group chats, games and social platforms. Review the list of installed apps periodically; every new app can introduce a new content source or browser-like web view.

Explain the controls and respond to upsetting content

Technical controls cannot prevent every harmful image, message or link. Tell the child what is restricted, why the family chose the setting and how to request access to a legitimate site. Make clear that reporting an upsetting item will not automatically result in punishment.

Agree on a simple response: stop viewing the material, do not forward it, save only the information needed for a report if safe to do so, and tell a trusted adult. Use the reporting and blocking tools provided by the relevant app, website or mobile provider. If the child is at immediate risk or the material involves threats, exploitation or illegal activity, seek help from the appropriate emergency or child-safety authority in your country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintain the setup

  • Review restrictions and installed apps at a regular family check-in.
  • Re-test after operating-system, browser, account or router changes.
  • Check mobile-provider settings after a SIM, contract or account change.
  • Ask whether the child is using another browser, device, hotspot or account.
  • Update approved sites as schoolwork and everyday needs change.
  • Keep the parent-control password separate from the child’s device passcode.
  • Revisit the level of restriction as the child’s age, maturity and online activities change.

A dependable setup is therefore a combination of supervised account settings, phone restrictions, app and service controls, and network checks. Testing those layers—and keeping communication open—does more to reduce exposure than relying on a single “adult-site” switch.
