VRChat gives you separate controls for three different problems: Block User stops direct visibility and interaction with a person, avatar-display controls hide what someone is wearing, and Report sends a user, avatar, or world to VRChat for review. You can report without blocking first. Blocking is reversible, but it does not remove the person from the instance or stop their unseen interactions with the world.
The quickest choice is usually personal control first, moderation report second. Block or hide when you need immediate relief. Report when conduct or content may violate VRChat’s rules. Use the Help Desk when you need to attach screenshots or recordings, or when you are appealing a moderation decision.
Choose the control that matches the problem
Start by identifying whether you need an immediate personal filter or want VRChat to review conduct or content. The controls affect different targets and have different limits.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| What you need | Use this control | What it changes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop seeing or directly interacting with a person | Block User | Hides the blocked person from you and prevents direct interaction between you and that person. | The person remains in the instance and can still interact with the world and its objects. Those actions may be invisible to you. |
| Hide the avatar one person is currently wearing | Avatar display controls for the selected user | Changes how that user’s avatar is displayed to you. | It applies to that user, not necessarily to every wearer of the same avatar. |
| Hide one particular avatar regardless of who wears it | Hide Avatar Globally | Hides that avatar whenever VRChat identifies that same avatar as being worn. | Separately uploaded copies or versions are treated as different avatars. |
| Ask VRChat to review a person or content | In-app report | Creates a user, avatar, or world report for Trust & Safety review. | VRChat does not promise a direct response or disclose the action taken. |
| Send screenshots or recordings, or appeal a decision | Help Desk ticket | Provides a channel for attachments and appeals. | Use the in-app route for ordinary reports under the reporting guidance effective January 26, 2026. |
These controls can be combined. For example, you can block a person for immediate distance, report the person’s conduct, and separately report an avatar if the asset itself is also problematic. None of those actions automatically performs the others.

How to block a user in VRChat
Block someone in the same instance
- Select the person’s avatar in the instance, or open the Quick Menu and go to the Here tab.
- Open User Actions.
- Select Block User.
The block is a personal safety and visibility setting. VRChat says the blocked user remains in the instance, but is not visible to the blocker and cannot see or interact directly with the blocker. Other players may still see both of you. The blocked person can continue interacting with the world and its objects; you simply will not see those actions. Blocking therefore is not the same as kicking someone out, closing a portal, or making the entire instance safe for everyone.
A block also is not a report. It changes what your account sees and how the two accounts interact, but it does not ask Trust & Safety to investigate. If the behavior may violate the rules, submit a report as well.
Block someone who is not currently with you
- Find the person through VRChat user search, your friends list, or another in-app user list.
- Open the person’s profile.
- Select Moderate User, then choose Block User.
This route is useful when you remember the account but are no longer in the same world. It applies the same personal block as the in-instance route. If you cannot identify the exact account, do not guess; use the in-instance Here list or preserve the identifying details needed for a later report.
Recommended Free Tools
Unblock a user
- Open the Main Menu.
- Enter the Social area and select Blocked.
- Choose the person you want to restore and press Unblock.
Unblocking reverses your block. It does not erase a report you previously submitted, and it does not remove any separate avatar-hiding setting you made. If the person is still wearing an avatar you hid globally, toggle that avatar’s global setting separately.
What blocking does—and does not—change
Blocking is deliberately narrower than removing a user from a world. The blocked user can remain near other people, use world objects, and continue activities that the world permits. Other participants may still hear or see that person, depending on their own settings. A world’s scripts, objects, or portals are not automatically disabled for everyone when you block one account.
That limitation matters in busy public instances. If you are worried about an object being activated, a portal being opened, or an event being disrupted, blocking only prevents your direct interaction and hides the blocked user from your view. Leave the instance, use Safety controls, or report the relevant user or world when appropriate.
Hide an avatar without blocking its wearer
Hide the selected user’s current avatar
- Select the user wearing the avatar.
- Open the avatar display controls under User Actions.
- Choose the option to hide that user’s avatar. The same control also lets you show the avatar again or defer to your Safety Settings.
This is the right choice when a particular person’s visual effects, shader behavior, or avatar presentation is the problem, but you do not need to prevent direct contact with the account. It changes your display of that user; it is not a platform-wide takedown.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use this option when the concern is temporary or limited to one wearer. You can continue talking to the person while suppressing the visual presentation, and you can restore the avatar later through the same display controls.
Hide one avatar for every wearer
- View a user who is wearing the avatar you want to suppress.
- Open the avatar’s details or the avatar display controls.
- Select Hide Avatar Globally.
Global hiding follows that specific avatar rather than the person wearing it. To reverse it, view the same avatar and toggle Hide Avatar Globally again. A separately uploaded copy, edited version, or otherwise different avatar is handled separately, so hiding one entry does not automatically hide every visually similar upload.
Global hiding is still a personal display preference. It does not remove the avatar from VRChat, prevent its creator from uploading another version, or report the asset. If the avatar appears to violate the rules, use View Avatar Details and submit an avatar report.

How to report a VRChat user
Report a person in your current instance
- Select the person, or open the Quick Menu’s Here tab.
- Choose Report.
- Complete the report form, selecting the category and supplying the requested context.
You do not have to block the person first. If you need immediate relief while deciding whether to report, block or mute them separately; those personal controls do not replace the report.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteReport a person outside the instance
- Open the person’s profile from search, a friends list, or another in-app list.
- Select Moderate User.
- Choose Report User and complete the form.
Describe what happened, where it happened, and any identifying details the form requests. Keep the description factual and specific rather than relying on a general statement such as “this user is bad.” Mention whether the issue was repeated, but avoid speculation about motives you cannot verify.
How to report an avatar
Report the avatar a person is wearing
- Select the person wearing the avatar.
- Open View Avatar Details.
- Select Report and complete the form.
This route reports the avatar content, not automatically every action by the wearer. If the wearer also engaged in harassment, threats, or another user-behavior violation, submit a separate user report through the user’s profile or the Here tab.
Report an avatar from a list
- Open the in-app list containing the avatar, such as Recently Used or Favorites.
- Open the avatar’s details page.
- Select Report and finish the form.
Use the avatar report when the concern is the asset itself—for example, content that appears to violate VRChat’s rules—rather than simply disliking its style or performance on your hardware.
How to report a VRChat world
Report the world you are currently visiting
- Open the Worlds menu.
- Select Current World.
- Choose Report and complete the form.
Report a world you visited earlier
- Open a relevant Worlds list, such as your history or another list where the world appears.
- Select the world to open its page.
- Choose Report and provide the requested details.
A world report concerns the world or its content. If a particular visitor is also violating the rules, report that user separately; reporting the world does not automatically identify every person involved.
If several problems occurred in one location, distinguish them in your description: identify the world issue, the user behavior, and any avatar issue as separate facts. This makes it clear which target each part of your complaint concerns.
When to use in-app reporting versus the Help Desk
VRChat’s Trust & Safety reporting guidance changed effective January 26, 2026. For ordinary reports, VRChat encourages users to use the relevant in-app report flow. That keeps the report attached to the correct user, avatar, or world record.
The Help Desk remains the appropriate route when you need to appeal a moderation decision or attach evidence such as screenshots or video. In a ticket, provide a clear description and the relevant context. Any image or recording should directly show the alleged violation, not merely the surrounding conversation or an unrelated part of the session.
VRChat cautions that not every report receives a direct response and that it does not share the specific moderation action taken. A lack of reply is therefore not confirmation that nothing happened. Avoid submitting duplicate tickets simply because you did not receive a status update.

What to include in a useful report
- Identify the target precisely: choose the user, avatar, or world route that matches the problem.
- Describe observable conduct or content: state what was shown or done, rather than guessing at a person’s intent.
- Add context: explain where it occurred and what led immediately to the incident when that information is relevant.
- Preserve evidence safely: if an attachment is necessary, use the Help Desk route and ensure the screenshot or recording clearly shows the alleged violation.
- Use one report for each distinct target: a user report and an avatar report answer different moderation questions.
Do not treat the report form as a substitute for an emergency service. If you face an immediate real-world danger, contact the appropriate local emergency authority.
A report is strongest when another reviewer can understand the event without knowing your personal history with the account. Include the approximate time, the world or instance context when relevant, and the specific words, images, effects, or actions that caused concern. Avoid insults, threats, or attempts to organize retaliation against the reported user.
Safety controls that can reduce unwanted effects
VRChat’s Getting Started guidance describes several controls that can help before or alongside a block or report. They are personal filters, not moderation submissions.
Safety Settings and presets
Safety presets and individual settings control which avatar features are shown. They can reduce disruptive effects from nearby avatars without requiring you to block every wearer. The exact features visible depend on the settings you allow. Presets are useful when the problem is a category of effects rather than one identifiable person.
Mute
Muting addresses unwanted voice communication. It does not by itself hide an avatar, prevent world interactions, or send a report. If visual effects and voice are both a problem, mute and hide or block as separate actions.
Safe Mode
Safe Mode is a shortcut for disabling features on nearby users. Use it when several nearby avatars are producing effects you need to stop quickly, then adjust individual Safety Settings when you have time.
Personal Space
Personal Space makes nearby users disappear from your view while they may still be heard. Because it changes what you see rather than removing people from the instance, it should not be described as a kick or a block.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
These controls can make an uncomfortable situation manageable, but they do not replace reporting conduct or content that you believe violates VRChat’s guidelines.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a block removes someone from the world
A block changes the relationship between your account and the other account. It does not eject the person, stop their interaction with world objects, or prevent other players from seeing them. If the world itself is the concern, use the world-report route; if the content is an avatar, report the avatar.
Reporting the wrong target
Use Report User for behavior by an account, avatar details for the asset being worn, and the world page for the environment or its content. Selecting the wrong route can omit information Trust & Safety needs to evaluate the issue.

Blocking before reporting because you think it is required
VRChat explicitly says, “You do not need to block a user to report them.” Report first, block first, or do both according to your immediate needs; the actions are independent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsExpecting global avatar hiding to cover every copy
Hide Avatar Globally follows the particular avatar record you selected. A separately uploaded copy or version is separate, even if it looks nearly identical.
Using a report as a personal dislike button
A report is for content or conduct that may violate the platform’s rules. For an avatar you simply do not want to see, use the selected-user hide control, global avatar hiding, Safety Settings, or a block as appropriate.
Assuming silence means the report failed
VRChat does not promise a direct response to every report and does not disclose the moderation action. Keep using the personal controls available to you rather than repeatedly contacting or confronting the person for an update.
Confusing a visual problem with a conduct report
Performance-heavy effects, an unwanted style, or a bright shader may be reasons to hide an avatar or adjust Safety Settings, but they are not automatically rule violations. Report the asset when there is a genuine content concern, and report behavior when the issue is what a user did.
A practical decision sequence
- Need immediate distance from one person? Open the person’s actions and select Block User. Add mute or Personal Space if voice or proximity is the immediate problem.
- Only the visual presentation is a problem? Hide the selected user’s avatar, or choose Hide Avatar Globally if the same avatar should be hidden from every wearer.
- Does the conduct or content appear to violate VRChat’s rules? Submit the matching in-app report for the user, avatar, or world. Blocking is optional.
- Need attachments or an appeal? Use the Help Desk and include a concise description plus evidence that directly shows the issue.
- Need to reverse a personal setting? Unblock from Main Menu > Social > Blocked, or toggle the relevant avatar-hide control again.
If you are unsure which route fits, ask one simple question: “Am I trying to change what I experience, or am I asking VRChat to investigate?” The first calls for block, mute, hiding, Safe Mode, Personal Space, or Safety Settings. The second calls for a report.
What happens after you submit
Reports enter VRChat’s moderation process, but VRChat does not promise a personal response for every submission and does not disclose the action taken in a particular case. Keep your own notes if the issue is recurring, including the approximate time, world, and the account or content involved. Do not interpret silence as permission to continue confronting the other user; use the personal controls to disengage.
Menu labels and the placement of controls can change as VRChat updates its client. If a label has moved, look for the same target in the user profile, the Quick Menu’s Here tab, the avatar details page, or the world’s page rather than assuming that blocking, hiding, and reporting are the same action.
Quick answers to common situations
Can I report someone without blocking them?
Yes. VRChat states that blocking is not required before reporting. Submit the user, avatar, or world report that matches the issue, then use a block only if you also want personal distance.
Will a blocked user disappear for everyone?
No. Blocking affects your view and direct interaction with that account. The person remains in the instance, can interact with the world, and may remain visible to other players.

What if I only want to hide a disturbing avatar?
Use the selected user’s avatar display control, or use Hide Avatar Globally for that particular avatar regardless of wearer. Report it separately if you believe the content violates VRChat’s rules.
Should I report the avatar or the wearer?
Report the avatar when the asset is the concern. Report the user when the person’s conduct is the concern. Submit both when both the content and the behavior need review.
Can I attach a screenshot in the normal in-app report?
VRChat’s January 26, 2026 guidance directs ordinary reports to the in-app flow and retains the Help Desk for reports requiring attachments such as screenshots or recordings, as well as appeals.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I unblock someone in VRChat?
Open Main Menu, go to Social, select Blocked, choose the person, and press Unblock. Any separate avatar-hiding setting remains until you reverse it separately.
Does blocking stop a user from affecting the world?
No. The blocked user remains in the instance and can still interact with world objects and activities. Those interactions may simply be invisible to you.
What is the difference between hiding a user’s avatar and hiding an avatar globally?
The selected-user control changes how one person’s current avatar appears to you. Hide Avatar Globally follows that specific avatar whenever it is worn, regardless of wearer; separate uploads or versions are not included.
Where do I report a world I am currently visiting?
Open the Worlds menu, select Current World, choose Report, and complete the form. For a previous visit, open the world from a relevant Worlds list and report from its page.
When should I use the Help Desk instead of an in-app report?
Use the in-app route for ordinary user, avatar, and world reports. Use the Help Desk for an appeal or when you need to attach evidence such as screenshots or video, following VRChat’s guidance effective January 26, 2026.
Will VRChat tell me what action it took?
Not necessarily. VRChat says reports may not receive a direct response and that it does not share the specific moderation action taken.
The Bottom Line
Block for immediate personal distance, hide for unwanted avatar visuals, and report the exact user, avatar, or world that may violate the rules. Blocking is reversible and optional before reporting; use the Help Desk for appeals or reports with screenshots and recordings.
