Keep your browser’s phishing and dangerous-site protections enabled, and treat any wallet prompt you did not trigger as suspicious. Do not connect a wallet, sign a transaction, or enter a Secret Recovery Phrase in response to an unexpected pop-up. Browser and wallet warnings can help identify threats, but neither guarantees that every scam will be caught.
The safest response is simple: stop, close an unexpected prompt, and verify the site or download through a source you already trust. A browser’s ordinary pop-up blocker may reduce nuisance windows, but it cannot take the place of phishing protection or careful decisions about what you connect and sign.
What to do when a crypto-wallet pop-up appears unexpectedly
- Do not interact with it. Don’t connect your wallet, approve a request, sign a transaction, or enter account information. A prompt you did not expect is a reason to pause, not a reason to hurry through a request.
- Close the page or prompt. MetaMask says its genuine extension responds to a transaction initiated by the user; a prompt that appears just because you entered a site, or appears randomly, is likely a scam. If you cannot tell what triggered the prompt, treat it as untrusted.
- Do not enter your Secret Recovery Phrase. MetaMask says legitimate MetaMask sites and non-malicious decentralized applications will not ask for it. A website, support form, or unsolicited pop-up asking for the phrase is not a legitimate way to connect a wallet or review an ordinary transaction.
- Check the site using a route you already trust. Verify the exact domain and, before installing a wallet, use the project’s official download page or an official browser extension store. Avoid using the suspicious pop-up itself to find the “real” download or support page.
- Take browser and wallet warnings seriously. If MetaMask labels a site “Malicious,” don’t connect or sign; close the site. A warning is a stop signal even if the page looks familiar or claims the warning is a mistake.
A familiar logo or convincing wallet design is not proof that a page is genuine. Scams can imitate wallet interfaces and prompts, so judge the request and the source—not just the appearance. A prompt can also be unsafe even if it appears inside an otherwise legitimate-looking website. When something unexpected happens, close it and start again from a known official address rather than clicking through.

Chrome and Firefox include protections for phishing, deceptive sites, and other unsafe content. Their controls are separate from the ordinary pop-up blocker: a pop-up setting may reduce unsolicited windows, but it is not a complete defense against a fake wallet panel, deceptive web page, or malicious extension. In practice, check the browser’s unsafe-site controls first, then keep using the same caution with wallet prompts and links.

These instructions refer to desktop Chrome and Firefox. Settings names and locations can change between browser releases, and mobile menus may differ. On a work or school computer, an administrator may manage some browser security settings, so a control could be unavailable or locked.
Google Chrome on desktop
- Open Chrome Settings → Privacy and security → Security.
- Confirm that Safe Browsing is enabled. Google says phishing and malware detection is on by default and advises, “We do not recommend turning off Safe Browsing.”
- If you want real-time warnings about known and new unsafe sites, consider enabling Enhanced Safe Browsing.
Chrome’s Safe Browsing protections cover risks including phishing, malware, abusive extensions, malicious and intrusive ads, and social engineering. A red “Dangerous site” warning means you should leave the site, not treat bypassing the warning as routine troubleshooting. Chrome’s unsafe-site warnings can concern phishing, social engineering, malware, unwanted software, or deceptive look-alike URLs.
Google describes Enhanced Safe Browsing as providing real-time warnings about known and new unsafe sites. It is an option for people who want that additional warning layer; it is not a guarantee that Chrome will identify every scam or every newly created link. Google recommends keeping Safe Browsing on. If you use a managed device and cannot change the setting, ask the device administrator rather than trying to work around a security policy. Menu labels can vary by release.

Mozilla Firefox on desktop
- Open Firefox Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Find the Security or Connection and software security area; exact section names may vary by version.
- Confirm that Block dangerous and deceptive content is checked, along with the relevant controls for dangerous downloads and warnings about unwanted or uncommon software.
Mozilla says these protections are on by default unless settings have been changed. Its explanation says Firefox checks visited sites against lists of reported phishing, unwanted-software, and malware sites, and that the lists are updated about every 30 minutes while protection is enabled. That describes how the feature works; it does not mean every new or changed link will be identified immediately. Firefox can warn about a suspicious site and block a detected harmful download.
Check both site protection and download warnings rather than assuming one control covers every risk. A suspicious page and a file offered by that page are different possible problems: Firefox may warn about the site, and it may block a harmful download it detects. A clean-looking download page is not a reason to install a wallet from an unofficial source.

These layers are not interchangeable. Browser protections evaluate sites or downloads; a wallet alert evaluates wallet-related risk signals. MetaMask says transaction simulations can improve alerts, but they do not detect every threat, and a warning does not technically prevent someone from proceeding. Google and Mozilla describe browser protections for unsafe sites and downloads; neither says that an ordinary pop-up blocker will stop every fake wallet panel or malicious extension.
There is no basis here for ranking Chrome and Firefox as more effective than one another. Both describe built-in phishing or unsafe-site protections, but Google Chrome Help and Mozilla’s Firefox support information do not provide a head-to-head effectiveness test. The practical comparison is what each browser’s controls cover, whether they are enabled, and how the browser presents warnings—not a claim that one will catch every crypto scam.

Privacy and administration settings can also matter when choosing a browser protection level. Google and Mozilla provide information about their own protection features and settings; check the current browser documentation for details about information handling and review managed-device policies if a setting is controlled by an organization. Do not assume that a warning mechanism or a pop-up setting shares no information, or that changing a setting will improve protection.
How to decide whether a wallet prompt is real
MetaMask’s Help Center guidance is: “MetaMask will never pop up without you initiating a transaction.” This is MetaMask’s guidance about its own wallet, not a guarantee that every prompt in every wallet or browser is safe. If a MetaMask prompt appears when you have not initiated a transaction, close the page or prompt instead of trying to determine its legitimacy by clicking through.
The important distinction is whether you intentionally started the action that should produce a wallet request. For example, if you deliberately choose an action in a decentralized application and then see a wallet request that corresponds to that action, review it carefully before deciding. If a prompt appears just after visiting a page, without any action from you, or seems unrelated to what you were doing, do not connect or sign. Close the site and verify it independently.
Before connecting or signing
- Confirm that you opened the intended project by checking its exact domain against an official source you reached independently. Do not rely on the page that produced the prompt to certify its own address.
- Review what the wallet request asks it to do. Don’t sign a request you can’t explain or that doesn’t match the action you intended.
- Verify a contract address through the project’s official channels when a warning is less definitive and the address matters to the action.
- Remember that a site’s visual design cannot establish that it is legitimate.
- Stop if the request appears unexpectedly or if a browser or wallet warning identifies a serious risk. Do not treat a polished interface as a reason to override the warning.
MetaMask describes its security alerts as enabled by default in Extension and Mobile, though availability and interface details can change. Its warning classifications may be updated as threat information changes. An alert is an additional signal, not a replacement for checking the site and the transaction. MetaMask also says transaction simulations can improve alerts but cannot detect every threat; the absence of an alert does not prove a request is safe.
How to avoid suspicious crypto links and fake wallet downloads
Check the destination before using a link
Don’t rely on a link just because it appeared in a search result, message, ad, or a page that looks familiar. Check the exact domain using a known official project source. Look-alike URLs can be deceptive, and a browser warning may not catch every new or altered link.
To verify a destination, navigate to the project through a source you already trust rather than following the questionable link. Compare the address carefully, including the domain spelling and any extra words or characters. A site can copy logos, colors, and page layouts, so appearance alone cannot verify the destination. If the URL is unclear or the action is important, stop and use an official project channel to confirm the correct address before connecting or signing.
Browser warnings are useful when they appear, but an unwarned page is not automatically legitimate. Chrome’s and Firefox’s protections use unsafe-site information and warnings; new or altered sites may not yet be identified. Treat a warning as a strong reason to leave, and use independent verification when no warning appears.

Install a wallet only through an official route
MetaMask directs users to install through its official download page or an official browser extension store. Verify the extension publisher and the destination before installing. A wallet look-alike offered elsewhere may be designed to imitate the genuine interface or collect sensitive information.

Do not install an extension because an unexpected page says it is required to view a site, recover a wallet, or claim a reward. Start at the official project download page or go directly to the official browser extension store listing. Check that the listing and publisher match the wallet’s official route. If you cannot verify the publisher or the source, do not install it.
The risk is not theoretical: MetaMask’s July 2025 security report described more than 40 malicious Firefox extensions identified by Koi Security that impersonated crypto wallets, including MetaMask. MetaMask described that campaign as active at the time of the report. The figure is a report about that campaign, not a count of extensions currently active in 2026 and not a measure of how well browser protections block attacks.
Never share the Secret Recovery Phrase
Do not type a Secret Recovery Phrase into a website, support form, or unexpected prompt. MetaMask says legitimate MetaMask sites and non-malicious decentralized applications do not need it. A request for the phrase is not a normal step for connecting a wallet or reviewing a transaction.
Keep this rule separate from decisions about whether to connect or sign: even a site that looks familiar should not receive your Secret Recovery Phrase. Do not share it with someone claiming to be support, and do not enter it to dismiss a warning or unlock a pop-up. If a prompt asks for it, close the page and verify the site through an official source.

Changing a browser setting cannot undo exposure of a Secret Recovery Phrase. MetaMask says that if the phrase has been exposed, the wallet is compromised and the user should migrate to a new recovery phrase. Treat the exposure as a wallet-security incident rather than assuming that closing the tab or removing a pop-up has secured the wallet.
Do not return to the suspicious page to follow its recovery instructions or enter the phrase again. Use MetaMask’s official guidance reached from its official site to understand the migration process. The key point is that protecting the browser after the fact does not make an exposed phrase secret again.

Why browser and wallet warnings can still miss a scam
Browser protections rely on unsafe-site and download signals; wallet alerts use their own trust and transaction-related signals. A newly created or changed threat may not yet be covered by a browser’s reported-site lists, and wallet simulations do not catch every threat. A warning can also be something a user chooses to proceed past. For that reason, use warnings as a reason to stop and verify—not as a promise that an unwarned page is safe.
Google says Chrome’s phishing and malware detection is on by default and recommends against turning Safe Browsing off. Mozilla says Firefox’s relevant protection controls are on by default unless settings have been changed. These defaults reduce the chance of browsing without the built-in warning layer, but neither browser says that every malicious site or download will be caught. Likewise, MetaMask’s alerts and transaction simulations add useful signals without guaranteeing detection or technically preventing a user from proceeding.

That is a report about a counterfeit-extension campaign active at that time, not a count of extensions currently active in 2026 or a measure of how often browser protections block attacks.
There is no single browser switch that blocks every scam. Keep unsafe-site protection on, use official sources for wallet installation and project addresses, and make a deliberate decision about every wallet request. A warning deserves attention; no warning is not a safety certificate.

- You are installing a wallet only through its official download page or official browser extension store, and you have checked the publisher.

Does my browser’s pop-up blocker stop crypto wallet scams?
