Turn on Safari’s “Prevent cross-site tracking” control first. On a Mac, open Safari > Settings > Privacy and select Prevent cross-site tracking. On an iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Safari and turn on Prevent Cross-Site Tracking. This limits third-party tracking without treating every cookie as unwanted. Clear website data separately when a site is stale, you need a privacy reset, or you want to remove a specific site’s stored information. Do not confuse either action with Block All Cookies: Apple warns that blocking all cookies can prevent sign-ins and make some website features fail.
Safari’s controls address different problems. Cross-site tracking prevention is an ongoing privacy setting; deleting cookies and website data is cleanup; blocking all cookies is a much stricter compatibility trade-off. The steps below cover both Mac and iPhone, including how to clear cookies without deleting your iPhone history and how to see the trackers Safari prevented.
How do I block cross-site tracking in Safari on a Mac?
Safari’s Mac setting is designed to stop third-party content providers from following your activity across unrelated websites. Apple describes the purpose as stopping “third-party content providers from tracking you across websites to advertise products and services.” A provider can appear inside many otherwise unrelated pages, so a single visit to that provider does not have to be the same as deliberately using its own website. The setting addresses that cross-site relationship while leaving ordinary first-party browsing available in most cases.

Once enabled, Safari periodically deletes cookies and website data belonging to third-party providers, except for providers you visit and interact with as a first-party website. That exception matters: a service you intentionally use on its own site can retain the data needed for that first-party visit, while its ability to recognize you when embedded elsewhere is reduced. This is not the same as deleting every cookie after every page view.
What does Safari do with third-party providers?
Safari’s Mac guidance distinguishes a provider acting inside another site from a provider you visit directly. For example, an embedded provider may supply an element to several pages. With cross-site tracking prevention enabled, Safari blocks the provider’s tracking relationship across those sites and periodically removes the provider’s stored data. If you later visit and interact with that provider as a first-party site, Safari can treat that deliberate interaction differently. The result is a balance between reducing cross-site recognition and allowing a site you actually use to function.
What happens to embedded social-media buttons?
Buttons such as an embedded share control can identify browsing activity when they are supplied by a social-media provider. Safari blocks that cross-site tracking. If you choose to use the button, Safari asks for permission before allowing the provider’s interaction, as described in Apple’s Mac guidance. A permission prompt is therefore not evidence that the setting failed; it is the point at which Safari asks whether you want to engage with the embedded provider. If you only want to read the page, leave the control blocked. If you intentionally want to share, approve the interaction for that action.

- Choose Safari > Settings, then click Privacy.
- Click Manage Website Data.
- Select one or more sites and click Remove, or click Remove All for a complete website-data reset.
The list can include cookies, cache and other data retained by websites. Removing data can sign you out and can change how a site behaves. Use the selected-site option when one domain is having trouble or when you want to remove one provider’s stored information without resetting every site. Use Remove All only when you are prepared to sign in again and recheck site preferences. Deleting data here is a one-time cleanup; it does not turn off or replace Prevent cross-site tracking.
How do I block cross-site tracking on an iPhone?
On current iPhone software, Apple places the control in the Safari section of the Settings app. Apple describes the result as: “Safari limits third-party cookies and data by default.” This is the iPhone counterpart to the Mac privacy control, although capitalization and the surrounding menu labels differ.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Safari.
- Turn on Prevent Cross-Site Tracking.
The purpose is to limit third-party cookies and website data used to recognize you across sites. It is an ongoing setting, so it remains useful even after you clear stored data. The exact arrangement can vary with iOS version or localization; Apple’s iPhone Safari guide shows the current path. If you do not see the option where expected, use the Settings search field for “Safari” and open the Safari settings page directly.
See which trackers Safari encountered
Safari’s Privacy Report gives you a page-level view rather than a population-wide statistic. While viewing a webpage:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open the page in Safari.
- Tap the page menu in the address bar.
- Tap Privacy Report.
The report summarizes trackers encountered on the current webpage and the trackers that Intelligent Tracking Prevention prevented. It is a record of your browsing session, not a promise that every form of tracking has disappeared and not a published percentage reduction that can be applied to all users. A page can contain several tracker attempts, while another page may show none; the report describes what Safari observed for that page rather than predicting what every site will do.
Use the report as a diagnostic. If you are checking a page that contains embedded social or advertising content, the report can confirm that Safari encountered and prevented trackers. It cannot tell you that all advertising is harmless or that every first-party data practice has stopped. Keep the dedicated cross-site setting enabled instead of relying on occasional report checks.

How do I clear cookies in Safari without deleting my iPhone history?
Use Safari’s Advanced > Website Data screen. This removes cookies, cache and other stored website data while retaining your browsing history. It is the right path when you want to reset site storage but keep the list of pages you visited.
- Open Settings > Apps > Safari.
- Scroll down and tap Advanced.
- Tap Website Data.
- Tap Remove All Website Data, then confirm.
This is a broad reset of website storage. Expect some sites to forget your sign-in, shopping-cart state, consent choices or other preferences. If you need to preserve a particular site’s session, do not use the remove-all command; clear data only when you are ready to authenticate again. Because the command affects all stored website data, it is more disruptive than the selected-site removal available in Mac Safari.
Clearing data also does not permanently stop new storage. After the reset, sites can store new cookies and other website data according to your Safari settings. For that reason, pair cleanup with Prevent Cross-Site Tracking when your goal is continuing protection rather than a single reset.
Clear history and website data together on iPhone
For a wider cleanup, Apple provides Settings > Apps > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. That command removes your browsing history as well as website data. Choose it when you intentionally want both records removed; choose the Advanced path above when keeping history matters. Apple documents these consequences in its Safari history, cache and cookies instructions.
The two commands answer different needs. If your concern is a stale login or a site retaining old settings, removing website data while preserving history is usually the narrower action. If you are intentionally clearing the local record of browsing and the associated site storage, use Clear History and Website Data and expect both categories to disappear.
How do I remove cookies for one site on a Mac?
Mac Safari lets you target individual domains instead of deleting everything. This is useful when one website repeatedly shows an old state, a session appears corrupted, or you want to remove a particular provider’s stored information while leaving other sites alone.
- Open Safari and choose Safari > Settings.
- Click Privacy.
- Click Manage Website Data and wait for the site list to load.
- Select the site whose stored data you want to remove.
- Click Remove, then click Done.
To reset every listed site, use Remove All in the same panel. Apple notes that deleting website data can sign you out or alter website behavior. A site-specific removal is therefore the least disruptive choice when only one domain is stale. Record any settings you will need to recreate before removing its data, especially if the site depends on a saved session or preference.
Apple’s Mac Safari Privacy settings guide covers the Manage Website Data controls and the privacy setting that governs cross-site tracking. If your Mac shows slightly different wording, look for the Privacy pane and its website-data management button rather than assuming the feature is missing.
Should I block all cookies?
Usually, no. Prevent cross-site tracking is the appropriate baseline for someone who wants to reduce third-party tracking while keeping ordinary first-party site functions available. Block All Cookies is a separate, stronger control that prevents sites from storing cookies and website data. Apple warns that you may not be able to sign in and that some webpage features may stop working when all cookies are blocked.

Cookies are not synonymous with tracking. A site can use stored data for authentication or preferences, and blocking that storage can affect basic operation. If your aim is to limit third-party recognition, use Safari’s dedicated cross-site setting instead of imposing the broadest storage restriction on every site.

|---|---|---|
| Prevent cross-site tracking | Limits third-party tracking through Safari’s built-in control. | Recommended baseline; it generally preserves ordinary first-party functionality, although behavior depends on the site and Safari implementation. |
| Remove selected website data | Deletes stored data for sites you choose. | Useful for one site’s stale session or a targeted privacy cleanup; may sign you out or change that site’s behavior. |
| Remove all website data | Deletes cookies, cache and website data broadly. | Useful for a full website-data reset; expect to sign in again on some sites. |
| Block all cookies | Prevents sites from storing cookies and website data. | More disruptive than cross-site tracking prevention; sign-ins and site features can fail. Use only when that trade-off is acceptable. |
| Add a content blocker | A third-party app or Safari extension can block cookies and other content. | Optional extra. Check the current blocker’s features, permissions and privacy practices before installing it. |
Apple’s Mac cache and cookie guidance documents the all-cookie warning. Blocking all cookies is not an equivalent substitute for the cross-site tracking setting: it targets storage broadly, including storage that many sites need for authentication and essential functions.
When would a full cookie block be reasonable?
Only when you knowingly accept the compatibility cost and have a specific reason to prevent all cookie storage. Before enabling it, expect that sign-in forms may no longer work and that some page features may fail. If a site becomes unusable, turn the broad block off and retain Prevent cross-site tracking as the less disruptive privacy baseline.
What is the difference between tracking prevention, clearing data and Private Browsing?
Prevent cross-site tracking is an ongoing control
When enabled, Safari limits the ability of third-party providers to correlate your activity across websites. It is the setting to leave on for everyday browsing. It does not promise that every first-party analytics practice, advertising system or other tracking method is eliminated, and Apple’s documentation does not provide a universal percentage reduction. The exact behavior can depend on the site and Safari’s implementation.
Clearing website data is a cleanup action
Deleting cookies or website data removes information already stored by sites on your device. It does not replace the ongoing tracking-prevention control. After a reset, websites can store new data again according to your Safari settings, so use both controls for different purposes: leave cross-site prevention enabled and clear data when a specific problem or privacy need calls for it.
Private Browsing has a different purpose
Private Browsing changes local history and session behavior. It should not be presented as a guarantee that every tracker, website or network observer is blocked. For cross-site tracking protection in ordinary or private windows, keep Safari’s dedicated prevention setting enabled. Use Private Browsing when you want different local browsing behavior, not as a replacement for the privacy setting.
Can Safari hide my IP address as well?
IP-address protection is separate from cookie management. Apple documents iCloud Private Relay as an optional privacy feature. Hiding your IP address from both trackers and websites requires iCloud+; availability varies by country or region. Private Relay is therefore an additional control, not a replacement for Prevent cross-site tracking or for clearing website data when a site needs a reset.
Do not assume that enabling one control automatically enables the other. Cross-site tracking prevention concerns third-party cookies and website data; Private Relay concerns IP-address visibility. Check Apple’s current regional availability and account requirements before relying on Private Relay, particularly when traveling or using an account whose services differ by country.
Should I install a Safari content blocker?
No extra app is required to enable Safari’s built-in cross-site tracking prevention. Apple does document third-party content-blocker apps and Safari extensions as optional tools that can block cookies and other content. If you add one, evaluate its current compatibility, permissions, update status and privacy policy yourself; Apple’s support documentation does not endorse a particular blocker.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common Safari cookie problems
A site signed me out after I removed data
That is expected when the site stored its login session in the deleted data. Sign in again. If only one domain was affected, use Mac Safari’s selected-site removal next time or avoid the iPhone remove-all command until you are ready to authenticate again. Removing all data can also erase consent choices, shopping-cart state and other preferences, so plan to recreate them.
A webpage feature stopped working
First check whether Block All Cookies is enabled; Apple warns that this setting can break sign-in and other features. Turn it off and keep Prevent cross-site tracking enabled instead. If the problem began immediately after clearing data, reload the site and recreate any required preferences or session. If only one domain is affected on Mac, remove and rebuild that domain’s data rather than wiping every site.
I still see targeted advertising
Cross-site tracking prevention reduces one route for third-party correlation; it is not a guarantee that every advertisement will be untargeted. Safari’s Privacy Report can show which trackers were encountered and prevented on a particular iPhone webpage. Do not interpret that page report as a universal count or effectiveness percentage, and do not treat the continued appearance of an advertisement alone as proof that the setting is disabled.
A share button asks for permission
That prompt is part of Safari’s protection for embedded social-media content. Safari blocks the provider’s cross-site tracking until you choose to interact with the button. Decline it if you only want to read the page; allow it when you intentionally want to use the sharing feature. The prompt reflects the difference between an embedded third-party provider and a first-party interaction you requested.
I cannot find the setting
On Mac, look under Safari > Settings > Privacy. On iPhone, look under Settings > Apps > Safari. Apple changes labels and menu placement across operating-system versions and localizations, so search within the Settings app for “Safari” if the listed path does not match your device. On older interfaces, the same feature may appear in a differently organized Safari settings page.
Which cleanup command should I choose?
Use Mac’s Manage Website Data when you can identify the problematic or unwanted site. On iPhone, use Advanced > Website Data > Remove All Website Data when you want to keep history but reset site storage. Use Clear History and Website Data only when deleting history as well is intentional. These choices prevent a broad reset from becoming the default response to a single-site problem.
A practical Safari privacy routine
- Enable Prevent cross-site tracking on every Safari device you use.
- Leave Block All Cookies off unless you accept possible sign-in and feature failures.
- When one site behaves incorrectly, remove that site’s stored data on Mac instead of wiping every domain.
- On iPhone, use Advanced > Website Data when you want to remove website data while keeping history.
- Use Clear History and Website Data only when you intend to delete both categories.
- Open an iPhone page’s Privacy Report when you want to inspect trackers encountered and prevented on that page.
- Consider a content blocker or iCloud Private Relay only for the additional protection you specifically need, and verify compatibility and regional availability first.
This combination keeps Safari’s built-in third-party tracking defense active, uses targeted cleanup instead of unnecessary resets, and reserves the most disruptive cookie controls for situations where their costs are understood. Recheck the relevant settings after a major operating-system update because Apple can adjust labels or menu locations.

How can I clear cookies without deleting my iPhone history?
Open Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Website Data, tap Remove All Website Data, and confirm. This removes website data while retaining history. It can still sign you out and reset site preferences.
What happens if I block all cookies in Safari?
Apple warns that you may be unable to sign in and that some webpage features may fail. Blocking all cookies is broader and more disruptive than Prevent Cross-Site Tracking, so it is not the usual recommendation for reducing third-party tracking.
Can I remove data for only one website?
Yes on Mac: Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data, select the site, choose Remove, and click Done. Apple’s documented iPhone path is a broad Remove All Website Data command.
Recommended Free Tools
Where is Safari’s Privacy Report on iPhone?
While viewing a page in Safari, open the page menu in the address bar and tap Privacy Report. It summarizes trackers encountered on that page and trackers Intelligent Tracking Prevention prevented.
Does Private Browsing block every tracker?
No. Private Browsing changes local history and session behavior but is not a guarantee against every tracker, website or network observer. Keep Prevent Cross-Site Tracking enabled for cross-site protection.
Does Safari’s tracking setting hide my IP address?
No. IP-address hiding is separate. Apple documents iCloud Private Relay; hiding your IP from both trackers and websites requires iCloud+, and availability varies by country or region.
Do I need a content blocker to use Safari’s built-in protection?
No. Third-party content blockers and Safari extensions are optional additions. Check an app’s current compatibility, permissions and privacy policy before installing it.
The Bottom Line
Best default: enable Prevent cross-site tracking in Safari on Mac and iPhone, leave Block All Cookies off, and clear website data only when a targeted or complete reset is necessary. Use Mac’s site-specific removal when possible, the iPhone Advanced path when you want to keep history, and Privacy Report when you want to inspect trackers on a page.
